Yes please, we need more women. Hehe.

But anyway, thanks for the link in the header, guys, it's great.

Well Katana requested that somebody help out with explaining how the Star Wars Fanon Wiki works.

How to format fan fiction

Basically, there is no format. To be blunt, we've never actually tried to develop a fan fiction formatting guide and therefore there is no guide, and I don't see one coming anytime soon. But there are recommendations. First, you must create the page about your novel that will work as the encyclopedic angle of your novel and that will act as a table of contents or glossary. For example, my own working novel is Star Wars: Knighthood. There, you can read about what the novel represents, its development, who appears in it, the plot summary and publisher's summary, and of course, it gives you access to the chapters written so far. That's basically the only encyclopedic article you have to make if you only plan on posting fan fiction.

So, once that is done, you may begin creating the chapters, parts, etc. of your novel/novella/fan fiction. However, make sure the title remains in line with the title of your novel. So, since my novel is titled Star Wars: Knighthood and that is the name of the article on the Wiki, all chapters should somehow represent that. So, for example, mine is as Star Wars: Knighthood: Chapter 1. There are other ways to do it, though; for example, I might exclude the "Star Wars" from the title of the chapters, so they appear as "Knighthood: Chapter 1" instead. Or, on the other hand, you might want to change it from colon to dash, such as "Star Wars: Knighthood - Chapter 1". It's a matter of preference, but jut make sure the chapter articles somehow are easily related to the novel's article.

So, how do you format the actual chapters? Well, first, you copy/paste the narrative into the chapter/part's article. Then, you format it as you wish. For example, you might want to make headers stand out, so you might want to bold "Dantooine, 32 BBY" or whatever the case may be or you might want to italicize it. Again, your preference is what counts. Once that is done, I recommend you do nothing more to the page other than categorizing it properly and pasting in some links to the rest of your novel, so others can navigate back and forth easily. For example, at the top of the pages of my own chapters, there are three links; always to the chapter before and after the chapter in question, and then a link to the novel itself. If you need help with that, I know HTML well, so I could easily help with that. Then, at the bottom of my chapters, there is (what's called) a template, which also has links to Knighthood and its chapters.

A template is more difficult to make especially for inexperienced users, so I can help easily with that as well. I like making templates, and it'd be for the good of your novel for navigation. As for categories, you should be putting at least one (as deemed by the policy) but I recommend two. The first one should be "Articles by (your user name)" such as "Articles by Katana Geldar". To do this, just place [[Category: Articles by Katana Geldar]] anywhere on the article (on any article), but I recommend putting it either at the very bottom or the very top of the article. Then, the second category you should be using is one that groups all of your chapters of that specific novel/novella in question together. So, I personally use simply a category titled [[Category:Star Wars: Knighthood]] after my novel. Within, all pages related to the novel will be in there, such as the novel's article and all chapters, and whatever else may fall within (which shouldn't be anything other than that, really).

However, others prefer to go about it in a different way. For example, fellow user Wayne Lipman (user name: CurrentBigThing) has a novel entitled Star Wars: The Alderaan Affair and for his chapters, he instead uses [[Category:Chapters of the Alderaan Affair]]. That is perfectly fine, as long as the category name you choose represents your novel and whatever is within. Whatever you choose, just be sure to categorize those categories as well. You're probably wondering how to do that...

How to create articles, categories, and links (for navigation)

So how do you even create a page or a category? Simple, really. There are multiple ways to create pages and the simplest one is going to the Main Page (simply click the link to "SW Fanon Wiki" in the header and you will be directed there) and then where it says "Create article" there is an empty space. Well, just write in the title of the page you wish to create in the space provided and hit "create page", which will take you to editing the page you titled. However, if there is already an article there with the exact title, you won't be able to do this. This shouldn't be a problem however since we're talking about fan fiction. If you were trying to create a page of Luke Skywalker, then you would have to go through a slightly (very slightly) different process, but that's for another day. Anyway, so you should now be editing the page you wish to create. You will see all the buttons available to you, such as the Wiki coding, as well as "save page" and "preview". I recommend you don't save the page you are making until you're absolutely done - hitting preview though helps big time, as its just like TheForce.Net's preview and shows you how things will turn out., helping you correct errors and such.

So, once you create that article for your novel, you have just placed two new categories: "[[Category: Articles by USERNAME]]" and "[[Category:TITLE OF NOVEL]]" (note, please don't write it in all caps, I just did that so you know what you have to put it). So, once you save, your article will be pretty much done. Now scroll down to the very bottom of the page (if needed) and you will see the little bar that says "Categories" and tells you which categories said page is in. Your new categories should appear as red links, rather than blue, meaning they are not created/empty/the like. So, to create them, click on it.

First, say you clicked on "Articles by USERNAME". So you should now be editing that category and simply place this: "This category is for articles by [[User:USERNAME|USERNAME]]". That creates a link to your username in case anyone wants to see who you are. Then, before saving, add a category to that category (yes, categories need love too). But, this one is already created, so you don't have to go beyond that. Simply put [[Category:Articles by author|USERNAME]], and you're done. Then save it, and voila! 'Tis done, your category is ready. You may now use that category on all the pages you create, which will "claim" them as yours, basically to group them together and so others know who is the author of said articles. It should now appear as a blue link on any pages the category is on, such as your novel's article in this case.

Now, to create the category about your novel. Say you titled it [[Category: TITLE OF NOVEL]]. So, click on the novel's page now and find that red link. Click on it as you did with the other category to create it. Now, place the following: "This category is for articles relating to [[TITLE OF NOVEL]]." This will link browsers back to the novel page in case they want to read about it, as well as so they know what the novel is about. Then, place it in one of the following categories: [[Category: Novels]] (if its a novel) or [[Category: Books]] (if its not a novel, such as a novella or short story), PLUS, also add [[Category: Fanwork segments]]. This will note that this category holds chapters of your articles and such. Once you've done that, you should be done! Now you may more easily navigate back and forth between your articles and categories.

Lastly, a quick note about how to link. To create a link simple put brackets around a name or something similar. For example, if I wanted to link to my flagship character within a forum post or an article or a talk page, I would put it like this: [[Narod Antrell]]. There are also other types of pages to link to though, such as categories, forums, user pages, etc. To link to those, it might get a bit more difficult. To link to a user page, simply put "User:" before your username, as so: [[User:Squishy Vic]]. To link to a category though, you must put a "colon" to make it a link, because otherwise it reacts as if you're placing whatever article in said category. So, say you want to tell others to check out your chapters, put "[[:Category: Star Wars: Knighthood]]" rather than just "[[Category:Star Wars: Knighthood]]". So simply put: Put a colon before category to make it a link, and leave out the colon to make it act as a category, as it should. Don't worry, normally you won't have to link to your category, when instead you could just link to your novel.

Well that's all for now. I hope this helps! (I only read through about the first fifteen posts, so I responded to what I saw users were unable to accomplish. Any more questions, just ask and I will be happy to answer them, or if these questions have already been answered, then I'm sorry for any inconvenience). Cheers!

*meanders in*

I actually do have an account over at the SWFanon wiki, and I have... most of a character page done. It's pretty close to standards, but needs more details, I think. I'd almost forgotten about it, actually. So thanks for reminding me it existed. tongue
