I've never successfully donated blood. For the longest time I didn't weigh enough (and even now I'm only just over the minimum weight), and after that when I tried my pulse was always too high because I haaaate needles.

Tonight I have to finish deconstructing a bunch of my furniture- I'm moving to a different apartment for a couple of months while I job hunt. I suppose if I'm going to completely turn my life upside-down I should do it all at once, right? tongue Three more weeks at this job, and hopefully I can find something new soon.

On a completely random note, I got to stick my very first femoral blood gas last night! It was pretty cool.
You wouldn't think it's so cool if you were on the other end of the needle! laugh Last month I had blood drawn from my wrist for a blood gas test, and man, that HURT! Plus they needed to pierce me 4 times to get it right rolling_eyes .

Oh, we don't stick femoral (the big artery that runs down your leg) ABGs on people who are conscious, those only get stuck in Codes or traumas. But yes, radial ABGs (in the wrist) can hurt quite a lot. There is a nerve that runs right along that artery and if you hit it, it is very painful. The problem is you can't see the nerve (or the artery for that matter) and everyone is a little different. sad But they are a very useful test.

I try and give blood pretty regularly but I need to go, it's been awhile.

I try to give blood as often as I can... even though I'm a nightmare for the nurses. I always warn them ahead of time that my veins are hard to find, that I take forever, and that I always get way light-headed at the end. And then they kind of freak out anyway, and I wind up breathing into a paper bag. Woo!

Last time the blood mobile came around, I was in the middle of a rabies vaccine and a tuberculosis test. They really didn't want that blood. Heh.

I can't say I like being stuck with needles and bleeding for fifteen to twenty minutes, but I do like giving blood.

SoA, I am also a nightmare for phlebotomists. My veins are very hard to find, my elbows are ticklish and I tend to not bleed fast enough or don't clot. Or I haven't been taking care of my anemia. But the last few times I've tried to donate, I've done it successfully. It's lots of weird fun.

mav, if it makes you feel better, my team and I spent probably the better part of a half hour discussing where we'd rather get a central line places if necessary. I still maintain a femoral one, at least for the placing, because I wouldn't do well with the sheet over my face. tongue

I get light-headed when I give blood too. After coming close to passing out every time, I've not done it again for a long time.

The needle hurts, and the bleeding thing is fine, until I see all those vials in that bowl, that's when I get dizzy.

Yes, I'm finally back! After a bad bout of flu, and looking after the house because of my mothers absence (she's home from the hospital now) I'm finally up to getting back on the internet!

Seems like we're having a shortage of entertainment pieces for the Awards, sorry to advertise, but if you're writing or have written anything for the Ceremonies, submission deadlines are coming up. wink

Sorry bout that guys. happy

I've got a viral infection and orders to get a lot of rest this weekend. I'll see what I can do.

Orders for me too, rest the whole week and this weekend and monday back to the hospital to visit the surgeon. That itching bandaid will be removed and after that its shower time for my itching hair dancing happy But resting for a whole week is having one advantage. Writing, drawing and sitting in the garden and catching up on reading.

I can't give blood -- or I could, I guess, but they wouldn't want it. And they can never find my veins, and I hate needles, so I stay away from blood drives. I think they're a good idea, though.

Ish, sorry you're sick.

Early, what happened to you?

Anyone seen Transformers 2 yet? I'm seeing it tomorrow afternoon and I cannot wait. I've heard that there's a lot of plot shoved in to it, so that it gets kind of cluttered at the end. But the same thing was said about Spiderman 3 and I thought that movie was brilliant. Fast-paced enough so that my mind didn't keep on wandering -- I had to pay attention to get what was going on, because it moved so fast.

Really? Spiderman 3 has the distinction of being one of maybe three movies in the world that I actively hate, and the cluttered plot was only one of the reasons. Add that to some story elements that would have been bad on their own, and some really simple VFX work that they should have done a lot better... yeah.

I will say, though, Sandman was a true achievement. Beautifully done. Maybe if they had made the film just about him, the rest of the effects would have been up to snuff.

I haven't seen Transformers 2 yet, and I don't know if I'm going to. I don't know about the story, but I heard that with the overabundance of robots, the screen gets really cluttered really fast and it's hard to tell what's going on- which, by the way, is criminal. I could spend hours watching the robots transforming with zero plot involved. hypnotized Not that this is terribly surprising, though- the first film got visually confusing with significantly fewer robots. Add that to the blatantly racist robots (that nobody on the film is willing to take responsibility for- good job, guys)... yeah. If I do see this one, it will be at a cheap showing, because the whole point of seeing a Transformers movie is to see it on as large a screen as possible.

Of course, since you won't spend the whole time picking apart the visual effects, you'll probably have more time to just sit back and enjoy the film. wink There are a few drawbacks to being a professional, but I think they're worth it. grin

Yeah, even my youngest son, a HUGE Spiderman fan, walked out of Spiderman 3 with this look of dazed disappointment on his face. For ME, it was almost like a parody of a real Spiderman film. sad

A couple of my friends here worked on Spiderman 3. Apparently when the scans for the emo dance scene came in, they gathered around the computer to watch, and the reaction was basically, "...this isn't in the movie. No, really. This can't possibly be in the film, can it?" Also, it's simultaneously amazing and ridiculous when you find out how much work the paint artists had to do- a certain lead actor might not have gotten in shape for his role, and the painters may have removed unsightly rolls frame by frame. plain I wasn't sure it was possible for my respect for the film to go down after hearing the behind the scenes stories, but it definitely did.

Yeah, Spidy 3 was a disappointment for me too. sad
I was going to go see Transformers tonight but I've got some major sinus/allergy thing going on and I figured I'd just be miserable at the theater. Unfortunately everyone I work with was going this weekend and I'll have to stick my fingers in my ears and say "La, la, la" all night. Not that I can really hear at the moment anyway! silly
