Spiderman 3 wasn't the best movie -- but I had no issues with it being so busy. I was so excited for Transformers 2 that I was even more hyperactive than usual (which is saying something, believe me). But once the movie started -- I actually found the beginning a tad slow, but then when it picked up, I could not look away. I even <i>tried</i> to make my mind wander, and it couldn't. I kept on going back to the movie, because it was that fast-paced. That is a definite plus in my book -- I absolutely adored Star Trek, but my mind was still able to wander all over the place during it. Transformers didn't let me.

I found this movie more blurry than usual, but I have a sinking suspicion that it is thanks to my eyes, not the movie itself. I just rewatched Transformers 1 so I was able to keep track of the robots better. Yes, there are a lot of them in this movie. Yes, it can get confusing. But after the first ten or so minutes, I was able to keep track of who is who. The bad guys are usually built differently than the good bots, so that helps too. What I didn't completely care for was the amount of violence/blood. There wasn't that much blood, per se, but there were a lot of deaths and a lot of pretty intense battles.

I found parts really funny, though, and I think there could be a third one. The ending wasn't as open as in the first one, with Prime's call to survivors, but there did seem to be enough material left open to possibly make a third.

All in all, Transformers was great, Star Trek was slightly better (despite the whole not-paying attention thing) and Spiderman 3 was okay.

Nope, it's the movie. ILM waaay overclocked the motion blur on this one.

Orci and Kurtzman also wrote Star Trek, so it disappoints me that they've found themselves back to their "The Island" quality of writing *shudder*, though I blame most of it on the fact that they mostly phoned it in in order to finish it before the writers strike. No one likes a scab, after all.

Had it been directed by someone else, I'm sure there would have been major revisions, sparing the audience the sight of robot testicles, starscream spitting, and tiny robots humping peoples' legs (THIS DOESN'T EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE! AAGH!). But no, we got Bay. Which is like handing the script to a twelve year old. I am philosophically at odds with his entire editing style, especially as it pertains to action sequences. Until he learns what a wide shot is, I will never be able to take him seriously. And was it me, or did the film become unusually preoccupied with jets and helicopters taking off from a military base about 2/3s of the way through? I got the feeling he actually wanted to direct GIJOE, and only begrudgingly settled for Transformers.

It's not the worst movie ever, but it's definitely the worst successful movie ever. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay money to see it.

A broken link is code with one character changed.

If I write:

Bold Face Text

you just see the text when what was actually posted was:

[ b ] Bold Face Text [ / b ]

I've added spaces where to show the b
old faced code.

If you send a PM with '[ ]' code characters in it, the person receiving it won't get the actual code, that will be used by the board. If you want to send a PM with code in it, so the person receiving it can re-post it with the code, you need to do something like 'break the code', like this:

{b]Bold Face Text[/b]

One square bracket has been changed, so the rest of the code shows in the PM, or the post, so someone else can see the code, fix it and repost the message using the codes.

Wow, from what I've heard Transformers 2 was plot-less confused I agree with Bay's inability to use wide shots though, having only just watched Transformers 1 for the first time last week, some establishing shots would have been helpful. I'll probably see it this weekend, and, no doubt, it'll be the usual Summer-movie-blockbuster-cheap-thrills-and-spills movie we're seeing more and more of these days. hypnotized + grin = money_eyes in the movie industry these days. While the action adventure sci-fi is always great, these movies are aimed at kids and young teens, but I think kids need to be seeing a serious movie once and a while and not just eye-candy after eye-candy.

Regardless of my opinion of the movie industry these days... I still love Bumblebee and Prime. grin

I definitely agree with the need for something more than eye-candy after eye-candy. Yes, I'm a fan of the Twilight books and by extension Cedric Diggory (I think Rob was hotter in HP4), but I am someone who sat through several hours of Gettysburg at 13, who loves classics like Wait Until Dark and Psycho, etc. There are too few films like House of Sand and Fog or The Reader. In short, it's like my bookshelf. I have Harry Potter, Twilight and LOTR, but they're wedged in there with my Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Steinbeck and Anouilh. There isn't enough well-rounding in Hollywood anymore.

What annoys me the most about Transformers 2 isn't the lack of plot or abundance of explosions/horrible humor/etc, but that it completely ignored the trend I hoped was catching on. The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Watchmen SHOWED everyone that you can live in both worlds. You can have a complex, meaningful movie with interesting characters who have developed arcs and that explores deep themes, and STILL have crazy gadgets, over the top villains, and awesome explosions. I also hoped the general audience would agree with me. Clearly, I was wrong on both counts.

And people just defend it. Even if they completely hate the movie, they still defend the sub-par quality as though there's no other choice: "Well, they're giant robots from outer space who turn into GM cars. What did you expect?" That's ridiculous. You could make that argument for ANY story whose concept is out of the ordinary. A New Hope is about a magician's apprentice with no military training blowing up a planet-sized space ship while being pursued by a cyborg with a glowing sword. But nobody makes excuses for A New Hope.

The Transformers are, in point of fiction, not robots anyway. They're lifeforms made of coherent energy they call "Sparks", and early in their evolution they found a way to fuse with/forge a metal shell. And because of their unlimited articulation - thanks to being immaterial - they can manipulate those shells to appear however they choose. There's a justification of their existence that fits somewhat with reality, and completely jives with the film. I just made it up a second ago. It's not even a very good backstory, but it's better than the 'zero backstory' given in the film. Good stories are not dependent upon their content! Any ridiculous idea, with a bit of thought, can become a good story! One day...one day, people will finally realize this.

...And one day, Sus Domestica will evolve wings and take to the sky.

Michael Bay has the sensibilities of a 13-year-old boy. And every time I hear his name, I think of the "Pearl Harbor Sucked" song.

I have heard that he starts rumours online just to throw the fans off. I don't know if it's true, but if it is, I can't help but like him a tiny bit for that. As a director, however... he really doesn't know what he's doing. He just knows how to push fanboy buttons, and somehow managed to get the best people to help him do it. My respect for Industrial Light and Magic is well-known, and it's one of my goals to work for them. I love the work they did on the first Transformers. Watching Optimus Prime hurtle down the highway while changing into a giant robot was a thing of beauty. However, the (lack of) plot made me want to bash my head against the wall. I probably have a rant about it stowed away somewhere, but nobody involved had any idea how computers or the FBI work.

Transformers is pretty much one ridiculously long demo reel. And it is a very, very shiny one. Those artists are going to be set for a while.

I liked both the 2007 TF movie and Revenge of the Fallen. And I also feel it's not contradictory to be able to turn off your brain and be entertained. Or to turn on your brain and be entertained. Both are possible and accomplishable-if an actual word. tongue

I saw Transformers 2 and it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't characterize it as my favorite movie. I mean I like to see robots who are vehicles. I went in with that idea and thought it was okay.

Isn't your post missing something Striker? Something like this:

Evening, everyone.

Everyone. "Jon!"

Allie. "Jonathan."

tongue

Anyway I haven't seen Transformers II but I've read enough to know not pay money to see it and wait until it comes out on dvd. Also I walked out of the movie theater before the end of Spiderman 3. I remember being really really angry . It was a lesson in setting my expectations low... I don't get as mad as I used too!

Surprised you remembered that, Rau. happy

*CLears throat*

Afternoon, everyone.

Everyone. "Jon!"

Allie. "Jonathan."

SM 3 sucked, yeah. The emo dance of doom doomed it. ROTF, though, was just... I dunno. It was over the top, lots of action... I just liked it. If for only two lines, both by Optimus...

"I'll take you all on!"

"GIVE ME YOUR FACE!"
