LOL!

Can't say I've read the Steinbeck piece, but I'm very familiar with Phantom. (I used to really like Andrew Lloyd Webber until I realized that every song in his shows are based off one theme.) That's my favorite scene in the whole musical, though.

Metal. Lots of Metal. From the old Heavy Rock of Led Zeppelin's earlier efforts to Iron Maiden(Up the Irons, craigrr!) to the symphonic Death Metal bands like Therion and Theatre of Tragedy, who's sounds of opera and related symphony sounds remind you that SW is a Space Opera.

I like Wierd Al too, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon seems to help a lot.

Overall, I like sounds that feel natural, are heavy in certain aspects, and are just a blast to listen too, like classical music.

Awright Casper!!! Finish this quote- "We're not a British heavy metal band..."

Anyhoo, I tend to gravitate towards scores when I write, even though I do mix it up quite a bit. Here's a few of the scores that really get me going (I'm not going to list the obvious SW or Indy scores)-

Close Encounters of the Third Kind- Haunting, moody and at times, playful. Very inspirational.

Dances With Wolves- John Barry. Evokes a feeling of travelling and discovery which is one of the main themes in SW- travelling to parts unknown and discovering hidden potential.

The Crow- Graeme Revell (score only; don't care too much for the soundtrack even though I do own it). Another one for a haunting effect. There's also a lot of very intense parts. Moving, to say the least.

Gladiator (both volumes)- Hans Zimmer. I can't say enough about the music from the movie. Captivating.

Braveheart (both volumes)- James Horner. Majestic, moving and emotional.

Conan the Barbarian- Basil Palidorius (sp?). Energetic and moving. Gets the blood flowing, kind of like Duel of the Fates, especially the opening track, The Anvil of Crom.

Saving Private Ryan- John Williams. If you're writing a military themed story, you can't go wrong with this one. The track Hymn to the Fallen gives me a lump in my throat nearly every time I listen to it.

I don't listen to music. I try to concentrate as much as possible. I do sometimes listen to music before I write though.

My WinAmp has got all sorts on it, and while I'm writing this I'm listening to the end credits of Men in Black. It's true that music does really help to inspire you. I wonder if George Lucas still listens to classic music when he was writing The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones.

I listen to all sorts of stuff. I often listen to Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the SW soundtracks, and lots of other stuff, especially hard rock when it comes to battle scenes. However, since my trip to Israel, when I got a bunch of Israeli folk music, I probably will be listening to that more than anything else when I write -- it's really good for writing, as I've already found out. wink

Now, this is a topic I can get into!

I listen to music quite a bit when writing... But even more so for idea generation and brainstorming. I have a huge collection of music and I use songs that match whatever mood the particular scene I'm writing has...

I use a lot of soundtrack music as backgrounds. I love a lot of anime soundtracks or atmospheric, high-tech ambience. John Williams doesn't do much for me, but I like Hans Zimmer.
For action scenes I'll switch to something fast-paced or heavy sounding.

Actually, I've had whole stories or long sequences of stories base almost entirely upon listening to a single track of audio. For space conflicts, Christopher Franke's Babylon 5 soundtracks are second to none. wink

Hi, I don't hang around here quite as much, but...here goes. happy

I listen to very meditative stuff when I write, music that can fade into the background and just weave in and out of my brain. Nothing overly distracting, but you know it's there.

Pachlebel's Canon in D
Sandbox
Hayden
The Tragically Hip
Any choral music I can come across, preferably madrigals or older stuff.

Cris~

I usually listen to film soundtracks, of which I own a bunch. The Gladiator and Gattaca soundtracks are probably my favorite.

There was an evening back when I was writing Refuge that I just have to mention here. It was during a thunderstorm, and the power went out. I was upstairs in my room, writing as I do in bed around 10:30 at night. It was a Sunday, and Hearts of Space was on NPR, to which I am a faithful listener. That night was meditative music I guess, and they were playing Yo-Yo Ma's Appalachian Journey (a CD I'm desperate but unable to find). I had this battery-powered light deal that only illuminated the paper, the pen, and me, and it reminded me of floating in space somewhere with this beautiful tragic music all around me. This all translated rather well to paper, serving to support the most emotional scene in the story.

I enjoy Christian contemporary, really weird music like Celtic or Yanni, or hard rock. Depends on what kind of mood I'm in. Rebecca St. James and dcTalk work wonders for me. Some songs calm your head, and others send you into a frenzy. I'm also a HUGE fan a Creed, and I love the song "It's been awhile" by Staind. Older stuff rocks, like Aerosmith's old songs and Van Halen.
Often times, it's the songs that give me the inspiration. Oh yeah, my little siblings love Ed, Edd, and Eddy. I swear, that is the craziest show, but the insane antics provide odd yet creative ideas. PLEASE don't ask, LOL.
