Yes, I was writing like crazy. I am the K/J energizer bunny (HJ, you knew that was comin') Here's a long one! (well, long for me)
“You ready?” Wynnie asked, walking up next to Zeth and stopping at his side. “I think Alec’s wanting to go.” She gestured toward the leader of the group who was standing off to the side munching on some strange frog-like creature. “The speeder’s waiting.”
Nodding, Zeth turned from another hyperdrive he had been inspecting. “Yeah.”
“Great. It should only take us a few hours to get there.” She turned and started off in the direction of the rest of their group. He followed silently.
“So your wife,” she began, keeping her eyes on the dusty road, ignoring the unpleasant stares of a few other patrons walking near them. She was glad Zeth was with her. Women didn’t last long in this city when they were alone. “Is she pretty?”
A wistful smile crossed his features. “Beautiful.”
“Beautiful, huh?” Her own smile faded as she considered his situation. “I guess you really miss her.” He nodded and Wynnie got the impression that he was remaining silent to keep a torrent of emotions at bay. Sith, this guy’s family might be dead for all he or she knew. And she understood how that felt. She had watched her mother die. At a Jedi’s lightsaber blade no less. It was vengeance that empowered her. What kept this man going?
“So when we get to the Core worlds,” she went on, pushing her thoughts aside. “What are you going to do? Abandon us? Where will you go?”
“Wherever my search takes me. I have no plans.”
“Well they could be on Geonosis or some other Rim planet! For all you know you could be heading away from them!”
“I doubt it. My family is…” He considered the words ‘famous’ or ‘important’, then thought better of it, “not the type to stick to the outskirts. My wife likes to be in the middle of things. Besides, I’ve been all through the Rim, even to the Unknown Regions. Plus I think…from what you’ve told me, I believe I’m getting close.”
“From what I’ve told you?” she said incredulously. “What have I said that leads you to them?”
He smirked again. It grew more annoying every time he did it. “I have a feeling you’ll find out soon enough.”
Who is this guy? she wondered, shaking her head to clear it. Whether he liked it or not, she was planning to find out.
* * * * *
“Hey.” Kylee reached over to the co-pilot’s chair and gently attempted to nudge Seth awake. “Seth.” She shook his shoulder again. “Seth!”
Mumbling incoherently he turned away from her to the right. Sighing in frustration, she resorted to more effective tactics.
Seth! she sent loudly through their Force bond.
He jumped, startled and turned back around, rubbing his bleary eyes. “Stay out of my head, Durron,” he commanded playfully.
“Would you rather me slap you until you wake up?” she said sarcastically. He gave her a look. A ‘what the hell is this about?’ look. She rolled her eyes. “We’re pulling out of hyperspace soon.”
“Where are we landing?”
“Mos Eisley Space Port,” she told him, indicating the small holographic map she had already pulled up of the desert planet that was their destination. He pressed a few buttons and the map reverted back to the original star chart of the entire system. “I figure it’s the best place to start,” she explained. “It’s the largest settlement.”
“And if they’re not there?”
She shrugged. “We’ll rent a land speeder.”
“No. I mean, what if Daala was lying? I mean, not that the Rim’s not a fine place to start, but you know her, she’s always got ulterior motives. What if she’s trying to get you out of the way for a while for some reason?”
“Then we hunt her, find her, and kill her. Because if she was lying, then that woman has used up my last nerve.”
He sent her another look, but this one was far different than the first. It was concerned, scolding, and almost a little…afraid?
“Relax,” she instructed. “I was kidding.”
“Good.”
So why did she get the feeling that he didn’t believe her?
* * * * *
“Come on, let’s go!” Wynnie hissed, gesturing for Zeth to climb into the back of the transport. She held the tarp aside for him.
“Why are you in such a hurry?” he asked, stepping up into the vehicle and sitting down beside her.
“We don’t stay in one place too long,” she explained, glancing around anxiously and looking like she wished the driver would start up so they could begin their journey to Anchorhead. “There are a lot of people who would like to see us dead. What with the Jedi numbers growing…” She let out a low growl in the back of her throat, “I swear, they reproduce like womp rats.”
He chuckled softly, then slowly stopped. “You’re life…it’s no way to live,” he told her. “It’s not even a life. It’s an existence. How can you travel from place to place all the time?”
“The same way you can. You have a goal. Let’s just say I have my own.”
“Hunting Jedi.”
“Look, I have my reasons, okay?”
“You’re mother,” he observed, stretching out with the Force before he realized he was doing it. She turned to face him, the dark irises of her eyes wide.
“I never told you about my mother.”
“You told me you continue her work.”
She nodded, obviously still skeptical of him, then looked to the front of the speeder. “Hey, let’s go!” She banged on the partition between the Brigadiers and the driver.
“Hold on,” he called back. “There’s a freighter landing in the docking bay. Alec’s making sure we’re not being followed.”
Huffing a sigh, she flopped back on the bench. “Great. What’s a freighter gonna do?”
“Weapons!” Alec practically screamed, throwing aside the tarp and startling everyone inside. He began grabbing at the supply of the blasters they all carried.
“You were saying?” Zeth said sarcastically, grabbing one of the guns himself, then handing one over to Wynnie.
“What do we got?” she asked Alec, attaching an extra weapon to the holster at her hip.
“Jedi. Two of ‘em.” He disappeared around the side of the transport again. The rest began climbing back out of the back, Zeth the most hesitant.
“Come on!” Wynnie urged, shoving him out.
“I-” he was cut off by blasterfire rushing past his head, coming dangerously close to searing his ear.
“Those kriffing swords of theirs,” Wynnie said angrily, beginning to fire at them herself. Zeth squinted at the two Jedi, swinging their lightsabers in easy, graceful arcs to deflect the bolts coming their way. A man and woman, he maybe a little older, her rather young. Both dark haired.
Suddenly the young woman rushed forward, going on the offensive while her companion covered her. Watching her fight reminded him of his own style, yet it had been years since he had wielded a lightsaber. Too long for his taste.
Zeth raised his blaster, well aware that he was giving up any chances of a ride off this rock and fired at one of the Brigadiers, scorching his palm and causing him to drop his blaster. The older Jedi stared at him quizzically for a moment, obviously surprised, but quickly recovered, accepting the help silently. Zeth fired at a few more.
“Drop it,” a voice commanded. He felt the flash suppressor of a blaster pressed against the small of his back. He slowly let his own weapon fall to the ground, then turned. Wynnie raised her blaster toward his face. “I knew I couldn’t trust you. I forgot you were a Jedi supporter.”
“You might wanna put that away before you hurt yourself,” another female voice advised. He glanced over his shoulder. The female Jedi had stepped up behind him, lightsaber raised threateningly. When Wynnie turned the blaster toward her, she cleanly sliced the end off. The other male Jedi joined her. Zeth sensed some sort of telepathic understanding cross between them and she lowered her blade. “Go.” Wynnie crossed her arms defiantly. “Now!” the Jedi ordered. Her resolve fading Wynnie started off in the other direction. Sighing in relief, Zeth turned to thank them both, mainly the older for his intervention.
“Did I say to move?” the girl demanded, holding her saber just short of his throat. Once he saw her face, there was no way he could have replied, even if he had wanted to. She seemed to be having somewhat of a similar reaction and she stared back, studying him. The other Jedi glanced back and forth between them, completely confused until she spoke, her tone utterly incredulous.
“Daddy?”
