Absolutely amazing! I see you are a fan of Susan Anthony as well happy

Your characterizations are done so well. You have an amazing gift to cut to the chase with so few words - but have each swimming with delicious details.

I loved the reference to the old shoulder wound and now am so thankful for Xan for making Obi work past that and not have it as a weakness.

I find myself popping over here more and more to see if you've posted. I'm so glad you are continuing with this. Thank you so much.

I love Lady Gossamer's works. She is a wonderful writer. I asked her a long time ago if I could use her character name in this story and she was nice enough to let me.

Thanks for the notes!

Nice to see Dex, and is that Artoo? grin Love all the descriptions, and Ben's fight with Maul was wonderfully written. I'm glad Ben got all that training and fixed that shoulder problem. Maul was really creepy, taunting Ben that way. plain Yay for Anakin, he's sure he wants to be a Jedi, even after being reunited with Shmi. happy I bet he'll help Ben heal. Great update!

I didn't know that you had returned!

Great posts! I am so glad that Anakin and Ben have met--it was destined, even though no one has figured out that Ben is Obi-Wan!

Can't wait for the next post.

Chapter 74:

The Room of a Thousand Fountains was not actually a room. Unless you defined ‘room’ as a space enclosed with walls and a ceiling. Then of course, all of Coruscant could be called rooms considering the Force-fields that were the only thing holding in any atmosphere at all. One of the most famous structures in the entire city planet, the fountains of the Jedi Temple resided in a space larger than most towns on other planets. It would more properly be termed a gardens or park. Vast fountains of water thundering spray hundreds of meters in the air; tiny still sheets sliding sleekly across crystalline or metal forms; lively water tumbling over rocks, over mossy logs; still waters in reflection ponds flowed gracefully over, under, and around sculptures from hundreds of worlds. Paths lined with rocks, grass, moss, bark, glass, bricks, wood, alloys and ceramic meandered through the garden. Plants of all kinds reached for the artificial suns that lit the room ranging from the eye searing brilliance of Tatooine’s double suns to the ultra red darkness of the Noghri moons. The one constant was water. Blue, green, yellow, red; every color imaginable flowed, tinkled, and sprayed. Every fountain added to the sound that surrounded the visitors.

Along one wall, mostly hidden by a huge fountain surrounded by tall trees, was a small wooded glade. Donated by Corellia, the low gnarled trees leaned over a small pond lined with pale ochre driftwood. Water poured out of hollow logs and along twisted iron wood channels of dark red brown in a hundred tiny rivulets. White sand lined the pond, and yellow, orange, and red flowers floated serenely across the surface. Large black and white fish lurked in the sun warmed water, while small brilliant yellow leaf creatures floated along the edges buoyed by the faint turbulence of the falling water. A low wooden bench carved from a huge piece of petrified wood so dark it was almost black, veined with streaks of fiery red and dark maroon sat in a patch of yellow flowers, the tri-petaled corellius. The thick sugary stems were a favorite treat for children to chew on; the pale white-yellow fruit fermented to make the brandy so infamous throughout the galaxy. The gnarly trees, named after the rock gnomes of Corellian legend, loomed over the graceful plants; long stems entwined with the bristled spiny leaves. It was the bluish berry of the tree that gave the brandy its bite.

Legend had it that during the fullest moon on midsummer night, the trees turned into small gnomes, and the corellius into beautiful winged fae. The tiny fae would run, the gnomes pursue, until they caught each other. Then they would dance until the suns rays turned them back into plants for another year. At least they danced in the children’s tales; the adult ones were a little different. Rumor said that if you sat still long enough, you could see the eyes of the plants watch each other and their branches entwine despite the lack of wind. Generations of Corellian Jedi, children and adults, had lurked on that bench or sprawled in the thick grass on midsummer night hoping to see the magical dance of the gnomes and the fae.

Today the bench was occupied by a beautiful Jedi. Her boots discarded along one edge of the bench, her bare feet buried in the warm green of the thick feather grass, she leaned along one thick arm of the bench. She held a data pad and her musical voice blended with the gentle sounds of the fountain as she read. A young man leaned against her leg along the edge of the bench. His feet were bare; his boots neatly aligned with hers. His robe was folded and his head rested against it, her fingers stroking idly through russet locks worn loose and drooping into his closed eyes and along a sturdy neck. His tunic was open, allowing the gentle caress of the sun light across the golden tan of his skin. The only discordant note in the scene of peace was the small bandage protecting the fragile new growth of bone and skin across his temple. However, the healthy tone of his skin told of healing well under way.

It had been a long slow road of healing for the young Knight. The Sith’s, as the Council had reluctantly named his nemesis, light staff had gouged a wicked chunk from the side of his temple. Nerves had been damaged, almost beyond repair. If it were not for the perseverance and determination of a young Healer and her Master, Ben would have been crippled for the rest of his life. The healing trance that Master had taught him as a Padawan had saved his life. The Healers had saved his body.

Risking psychic shock through over stressing her Force gift, supported by a team of her Master, Adi, Yoda, and Yaddle, young Healer Bant had been able to repair the damage. Using the Force more than her slender web-fingered hands and wrist tentacles, she had laboriously merged the nerves back together, allowing her Master to reach in and heal them. It had been slow painstaking work, requiring both skilled and experienced Healers’ full abilities. However, days later, the young man opened his eyes as he was removed from the bacta tank and smiled gratefully at the anxiously watching Mon Calamari to her utter relief. He could not stress the healing nerves and new bone growth over the burned area, but his naturally strong constitution and frequent Force healing from his Master and the others of the team that had saved him rushed his health strongly on the road to recovery. Had he not learned self healing from Bant’s Master so long ago, he would have passed into the Force soon after he was injured.

The pounding staccato of small boots hurrying in a most unJedi-like manner lured out the faintest curve of lips that were often too serious. The crackling of brush against a tunic was a familiar sound to both Jedi. The newcomer paused for a moment, both to admire the serenity of the pair in front of him and to push aside a moment of uncertainty. ‘Should I interrupt them?’ Just a few cycles ago, that small question would never have occurred to him. He would have been focused on his desires, his wants. Now he was learning to think first, to consider his actions and their impact on others. It was not the endless droning of instructors or lessons, but rather the example of these two people that was influencing him. Somehow, they had become very important to him.

Without looking up, the young man shifted, creating a space between his body and her leg. Not a large space, but the perfect size for the small body that slipped in with growing familiarity. Anakin burrowed into Knight Ben’s discarded robe, pulling the edges around him, needing the comfort of a touch. A slave he might have been, but he had grown up with his mother’s unconditional love. Jedi tenets could only suppress his need, not remove it. Ben and Adi understood and were more than willing to provide what he needed. A hand ruffled his hair, a familiarity that the boy tolerated from only three people in the galaxy. And two of them were here with him now. He giggled and poked his head out to glare in mock indignation.

“Cold again, Ani?” Ben laughed softly.

“I don’t know how you can sit here without a robe and your tunic open. I’m freezing,” complained the boy in a familiar refrain, tucking himself more tightly into the Knight’s comforting warmth, enjoying the laughter that silently quivered beneath sturdy ribs.

“I thought Tatooine was going to melt me into a sandy puddle.”

“Yeah, I guess it’s a little warm sometimes. But it’s a dry heat.”

“Very dry and very very heated,” they finished together in a well known refrain.

The Knight laughed. Ani giggled. They had this conversation frequently to the enjoyment of both participants. The boy snuggled into his friend’s arms and sat as quietly as he could as the Master above them smiled down at her cubs. She picked up in her reading where she had left off. Both young men thoroughly enjoyed her rendition of the astrophysics text. Although it was far too advanced for one of them, he could feel the Knight beside him absorbing the information. Someday, he would be that smart too. When she reached the end of the section, she closed the pad. Anakin leaned back, looking closely into the clear eyes of his friend.

“Knight Ben? What did the healers say about your eyes?” he questioned curiously.

“The nerves are growing back well now, Ani. I’m just not allowed to read until the nerves finish regenerating. That should only take a half cycle or so. Meanwhile, my poor Master is learning more astrophysics than she ever wanted. By the time the healers allow me to read again, I should be ready to take my teaching certifications.”

“Are you really going to be our instructor for beginning hyperspace mechanics next session? That is going to be great.” The little blond bounced excitedly. He could not wait until he was allowed to take the ‘older’ initiate courses.

“You say that now, Ani. Just wait until you see the studying you will be doing,” the Knight teased gently. He was rather excited about getting his instructor’s certification and beginning to teach. He loved working with younger people. His patience and ability to get information across to them was amazing to those that thought of him as an ‘action’ Jedi, one of the ‘aggressive’ negotiators; not a diplomat, but someone that you send when there was a dangerous job to do and all other means of resolution had failed. But Yoda, and surprisingly enough Mace Windu, had supported him whole heartedly.

Both older Jedi laughed gently at the expression of disgust that crossed the boy’s expressive face at the mention of more studying. He had been cramming extra courses in since he arrived to catch up with the other initiates his age who had been educated for years in the thorough Jedi education system. He may not catch up until he was a knight in some of the more esoteric subjects, but give him anything to do with mechanics or flying, and Anakin was more than capable of holding his own. Talk turned to the boy’s other studies and to whether the Knight would be able to compete in this year’s Demonstrations. Ben did not think that he was going to compete; despite holding two titles that ordinarily he would be pressed to defend. It was not worth the risk to his still healing nerves.

With every encounter, the bond between the Knight and the initiate grew stronger. The Master knew that they both felt the call of the Force, although only the older recognized it for what it was. He had spoken to her, as Knight to Master, not Councilor; she knew he was only waiting until the last lingering effects of his head injury were healed to ask for the boy as his Padawan Learner. She hoped that the rest of the Council would not prove difficult. Unofficially, she knew that her Master, Yaddle, would approve, as would her friend Depa Billaba. But Mace Windu and Plo Koon were adamant that the boy was not to be a Jedi. Saesse Tiin thought that would be a waste of an excellent pilot and was trying to get the boy assigned to his pilot program. And Yoda was being his usual infuriating inscrutable self.

She could feel the Force tying Ben and the boy together, could see the darkness fading from the boy’s future, and could feel the terrible guilt and soul numbing loneliness disappearing from her beloved Padawan’s future. And the powerful Jedi Master would do whatever she had to in order to ensure that those dark futures never occurred. She just wondered why other Jedi Council members could not see this. What shadow blocked their view of the future so?

A stern voice broke into the stillness, startling the boy who had not felt the approach of the newcomers. Adi and Ben had hoped that the others were simply passing by and not coming to disturb a rare moment of peace in the Jedi’s busy lives. However, the Force had other things in mind just now.

“Initiate Skywalker, surely you have more productive things to do than lie around wasting study time. If you wish to become a Jedi, you must learn to utilize your time wisely.”

Qui-Gon stood frowning at the knight cuddling with his Master and ‘his’ boy, the Chosen One, a most unseemly display of affection for a Jedi. The Chosen One he had found and brought back to take his rightful place in the Jedi. Cuddling, in the gardens. Most improper behavior.

“Knight Chiyari-Gallia, I do not care what you do with your time, but I’ll thank you to stop interfering with Anakin’s training. It is important that he receive the best training and not be led astray by…” Qui-Gon trailed off, catching back the harsh words that formed in his mind. Nevertheless, everyone clearly heard the rest of his words echo through the Force, ‘A pitiful cripple of a slave boy who fought his way to his Knighthood. A thug who uses violence, not diplomacy to achieve his ends. A disgrace to the Order to allow him to wear the robes and call himself a Jedi. Sith killer? Indeed the second term is correct. His future lies in the darkness that seduced the one he calls his father.’

The realization that they had heard his private thoughts shot through the beings listening with various emotions of shock, insult, dismay, and a strange calm dismissal. A gentle hand on Adi’s knee and a quick tap of one lean finger on Anakin’s mouth silenced the two before their responses aggravated an already unfortunate situation. Ben stood, calmly pulling his tunic together and knotting the simple cloth belt. He met the dismayed, but self righteous, gaze of the towering Jedi Master with a composure that his enraged Master was not sure she could have mustered in his place. Adi stood, drawing the tense shoulders of the initiate back against her body, sending Soothing across the touch into his unsettled and upset mind that she had difficulty embracing herself.

“A slave does not have the ability nor the right to become a Jedi, Master Jinn? You feel that I am somehow corrupting the child by my past? But am I not mistaken in that he was a slave as well?”

“I will choose what training he gets and from whom. He is not your concern, and I will thank you to stay away from my Padawan.” Qui-Gon glared down at the younger Knight, looming over him in an impressive attempt to physically intimidate the smaller man with his size.

It did not work. Ben had long ago learned to ignore such posturing. Ben raised his eyebrow in a manner reminiscent of Adi’s supercilious glare. “Your Padawan? Bruck has been Knighted? I must have missed my invitation to the ceremony. I shall have to send an apology immediately. We are closer friends than that. He had not mentioned being scheduled for his Trials.”

His calm assurance aggravated Master Jinn further. This boy was the same age as his Padawan and had been Knighted for several years now. How dare he insinuate that Bruck was so far behind him? Bruck was headstrong and impatient, but Qui-Gon was confident that he had taught him all that was necessary for a Knight to know. It was just the Council holding him back. Notice that their Padawans had been knighted.

“Padawan Chun is ready to be knighted,” Qui-Gon proclaimed, narrowing his eyes at the insolent upstart. This boy had spent entirely too much time with his ex-Padawan Xanatos. His sardonic manner of questioning his elders had rubbed off. He still could not believe this young Knight had defeated the creature from which he had barely escaped twice.

He winced suddenly at the sharp pain that bloomed in his shin.

“Ready Padawan Chun is not. One Padawan you have already. At one time one Padawan only can you have,” Yoda spoke gruffly; his ire visible in the narrowed eyes and flattened ears.

“You know that I intend to train the boy,” Qui-Gon stated, open defiance in his very stance and voice. “The boy must be trained. It is his destiny. I brought him back to the Temple to ensure his training.”

“Your Padawan he is not, Qui-Gon. Intended for another he is.”

“And just who has decided this?” Qui-Gon snapped, glaring down at Yoda, missing the wink the old Master gave to the Knight, sending the young Jedi’s spirits soaring.

“The Force has decided the pairing, Qui-Gon,” Adi said softly, suddenly feeling sympathy for the aging Master. She could feel the desperation in his Force signature. Not for glory, but to prevent the visions of darkness and destruction that were overwhelming in the Living Force, blinding him to all but the driving necessity of preventing the horror that he felt looming around him, centered around this child. “Look to the Unifying Force, Qui-Gon. Seek balance there as well as in the Living Force.”

Shaken by the sudden realization of his actions, Qui-Gon paused, his gaze turning inward. As he did so, he could suddenly feel the silvery cord connecting the two young Jedi. It was frail now, but visible when he looked with both sides of the Force. And he could see where it would strengthen with time, if allowed to grow without interference. He straightened, his dilemma resolved, and bowed to the young Knight.

“Knight Chiyari-Gallia, I apologize if my words and actions caused offense.” As with every thing Qui-Gon did, his sincerity and strong belief in the rightness of his actions shone through clearly, although some called it arrogance. He was not a bad man, could not really be one as a proven Jedi Master, but his intent focus on the moment to the exclusion of all else was notorious among the Jedi. It was the way his mind was made; he simply could not be otherwise.

Ben was not going to lose the concession Yoda had given him over a minor issue with a stubborn Master. He bowed shortly to the tall Master, then turned, pulling Anakin before him. He spoke facing Yoda and Qui-Gon, but his words were for the boy almost quivering with hope beneath his hands, leaning back against the solid support of his body.

Anakin closed his eyes. ‘Hoping. Please, Master Yoda, please please say yes. I want to be his more than anything. Please.’

“I, Jedi Knight Ben Chiyari-Gallia, take Anakin Skywalker as my Padawan Learner.”

‘YES!’ Anakin almost stumbled over his words in his haste. “I, Anakin Skywalker, accept Knight Ben Chi, Chi,” Adi whispered to him and he continued quickly, “Chiyari-Gallia as My Jedi Master.”

“I, Jedi Master and Councilor Adi Gallia, second this pairing as valid and necessary in the will of the Force.”

“Witnessed,” Qui-Gon intoned formally, bowing to the new Master and new Padawan. He then left, his business here concluded, no longer tormented by the writhing desperation that the Force had shouted at him since he first set eyes on the boy.

Adi wondered, not for the first time, how such a successful negotiator and diplomat could be so aggravating and difficult. She had often thought, quietly, to herself, that the people of the missions he was sent on decided to reach agreements just to make him go away again. More than once, as a Padawan, Xanatos had told her that he was tempted to turn to the Dark side just to escape his impossible Master.

“Approved,” Yoda said, snapping his gimmer stick sharply on the slate path he stood upon. He paused for a moment after Qui-Gon strode off. “Mind your Master you will, young Padawan. Much to teach you he has. Learn from your Padawan, you will as well, young Master. Finish your bond you will after meditations you do.”

“Yes Master Yoda,” the new pair said together.

The old Troll nodded, then tapped his way down the path, chuckling at something he heard in the Force. ‘Tell Yaddle first I will,’ he thought gleefully. “He he he.”

Adi turned and opened her arms to the boy who was almost vibrating in place. “Welcome, my Padawan’s Padawan,” she said as the boy launched himself into her arms with excitement. There would be plenty of time to teach him proper decorum. But for now, celebration was in order. She smiled quietly to herself. She would have to call her sister. She might not have the first grandchild, but now she had the oldest.

She nodded at Ben’s comm link. “Cub, there are people you two should call that will be most upset to get the news secondhand.”

Ben grinned. “Ani, we’ll call your Mom in just a minute,” he said to the boy’s utter happiness. The Knight tapped a code only used by a few select people into his link.

“Hello, Little One,” a dark smoky voice purred over the link. “What trouble are you in now and how much is the bail?”

“Hi Granddad,” Ben said brightly, his eyes gleaming in anticipation. He was not disappointed, getting a choked laugh out of his Master as well.

“What the Force?!” the voice snapped, shock evident in the formerly smooth tones. “Who?! When?! Young man, you better have a good explanation for this. I’m on my way there.”

Anakin watched in amazement as his usually some what solemn friend, and now Master, actually began to giggle. The little glade filled with the quiet satisfaction of the Force.

*delurks*

Wonderful chapter... I do remember being slightly annoyed with Ani as I watched the movies, or perhaps it was a side effect of reading too many Obi-centric fics (if such a thing even exists). There seemed something rushed about the moment when Obi-wan took on Anakin as his padawan in the movie, I think.

On the other hand, will Ben ever have his memories returned? It seems to be too much of a plot point to be ignored otherwise...

You also have my apologies for not dropping in sooner.

Love,
sayde

I don't think that Luke CAN grow a spine... I think spinelessness is hereditary. Just look at Anakin: he didn't have a spine until he became Darth Vader, and even then it was a mechanical spine.

It's a beautiful, balmy 68 degrees outside at almost 11pm, my UCLA Bruins beat Arizona (while USC lost last night) and there is a new chapter from Froggy. I don't think an evening can get any better than this!!
