The last post was high fantasy at its best. Bravo.
Dark Luke's love for Mara anchored him against the Dark Side and helped him step away from the abyss. It all makes wonderful sense.
As you've employed a cast of thousands, Gandolf, you've better tell us what happened to EVERYBODY! Yes, I'll camp out in front of your home if you leave out the fate of Leia, Han, Thrawn, Fel, Pellaeon, Karrde, Bria and her son, Jagged...you get my drift.

ok i have time now..
Gandalf, the wealth of information in this story,
inside and outside of the SW universe is extraordinary...
All that information on an Avatar, along with having your own orig. characters is a great accomplishment...
This last part, pulling Dark Luke aweay through his love, is amazing..because its true...if you have one person who truly loves you an you love back..you aren't all bad...
Great GReat Post
i think i'll check out your two short stories

Do you honestly know how talented you are?
The battle was extrodinary, but my favorite part was that it hinged on something you'd been foreshadowing since post one--love, the silver thread. Emporer Luke's incredible love for his Emporess; a light amidst the darkness that kept the darkness from conquring completely.
Wow.

IMHO, the only way to salvage the NJO at this point is to recycle the paper it's printed on.

Absolutely. I'm still really hoping Gandolf will post this story in its entirity as a Doc file when he's done so it will be easier to send to others and re-read without weeding through the other posts.

A year and a day later, it's over. It's been fun...
[/hr]
Epilogue
He swam in the darkness below conscious thought. Not a hateful darkness, not an absence of light and hope. It was the darkness that shielded and brought sleep and peace. Above him was light, but he shied away. He didn’t want to go there, feared without knowing what he was fearing.
Raindrops. He felt raindrops falling on someone’s face. His own? With thought, memory began to stir. He flinched away. Memories hurt. He heard a woman crying. He knew that woman, and he didn’t want her to cry. He wanted to reassure her that he was all right, that everything was all right. But to tell her that he would have to swim up.
Mara.
That was the name. She meant something to him. She meant everything to him. For her, he had done something. Light swelled, and in a deep down, animal part of his brain he knew that if he touched memory he would awaken to a dangerous and painful world. He had never shied away from pain.
Luke opened his eyes and groaned, and Mara sobbed in relief, burying her head against his chest. He let her sob, murmuring meaningless words of comfort as he rubbed her back, allowing himself to relive in memory the last few instants of the battle. He shuddered, but Mara didn’t notice.
He had almost had it, almost had absolute power. It was within his grasp, and he hadn’t taken the last step. For a moment, he felt a surge of anger with himself, and then logic returned. What good would it have done him to destroy everything? He would be as nonexistent as everything else, not even having a void to rule. No, he had made the right choice. And, tightening his arms around Mara, he decided that he had made it for the right reason as well.
Finally, Mara stopped crying and simply lay her head across his chest. He could feel her breathing, hear her heartbeat. Their link had never felt this close. A cool breeze swept over them; he saw that they were on a grassy hilltop under a sky of stars. A pale moon shone overhead, giving everything a silver glow. As nearly as he could figure, it was springtime. Crops were planted in nearby fields, though he saw no sign of any droids. A small village was within sight, about five kilometers away across the fields.
“Where are we?” he finally asked, and Mara stirred.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I woke up here a few minutes ago, and you were lying next to me. I was hoping that you knew. I…” she swallowed hard, “I can’t use the Force. I can’t even touch it.”
Luke shook his head. That was impossible. The bond between them was stronger than ever. It felt somehow cleaner than it had ever felt. He reached for the Force, and found nothing. His jaw dropped open slightly. It was like the Force didn’t even exist. “I told you,” said Mara, her voice wavering.
Luke had a sudden sneaking suspicion. He reached for the Force again, but a different side of it. The Light Side. And found it. He touched it tentatively, as if expecting pain. But there was none. It flowed into him, bringing healing and insight.
“We’ve been cut off from the Dark Side of the Force,” he said, knowing it to be true. He closed his eyes and let the Force tell him what had happened to him. “It’s a penance. We’ve been made immortal, until we’ve paid off our debts.”
“Debts?” Mara asked, suspicious.
”All the evil we’ve done in our lives. We have to make the scales balance; until then we’re doomed to wander the planes for eternity.” He could feel the grim weight of his crimes weighing down on his shoulders. He might not like his punishment, but he knew it was just.
Mara went pale enough for him to notice despite the poor light. “That’s a lot to make up for,” she said.
“Then we might as well get started,” said Luke, standing up. He adjusted his cloak and checked his lightsaber. Somewhere down in the village, someone needed a Jedi Knight or two. They’d have to do. Mara rose and stood next to him, and the wind ruffled their hair. After this village, there would be more. He knew that he would automatically find himself where he was needed most, teleported across space and time.
The road to the lights of the village down below was fairly long, but they went the distance together.
Mara awoke on a strange bed. She rolled off it instinctively, dropping to a combat crouch and scanning the room. No immediate threats in sight, she straightened up and looked around. She was in a plainly furnished room with adobe walls. The décor reminded her sharply of her own rooms at the Academy and the Imperial Palace. In fact, looking around, she could see small artifacts that belonged to herself and Luke. A pilots helmet, a left handed Sith lanvarok, a stack of books in the corner that she had been reading the last time she was on Coruscant, all were theirs.
She suspected that Luke had something to do with this. She touched their bond, and was slightly confused. He was all right, better than all right. But touching Luke though the bond was also like touching the Force rather than touching another human being, as if he was a manifestation of the Force itself. He sent reassurances through the bond, telling her everything was all right. She believed him.
She opened the door to the room – their room, she was guessing – and saw Artoo Deetoo, rolling about on some errand. He whistled cheerfully at her as he went past, and any last doubts Mara might have had vanished. If Artoo was cheerful, everything was all right.
She wandered though the house, and she got the feeling that it was underground. It simply felt that way. Eventually, she tracked Luke down in the kitchen, just finishing making one of her favorite meals. She smiled delightedly as he handed her a plate and gave her a quick kiss on the forehead, motioning for her to come sit down with him. She noticed that his eyes were their more normal shade of sky blue again.
“All right, what happened?” Mara asked between bites. Luke had definitely learned to cook somewhere since she’d seen him last. This was positively divine. “I presume that you won?” She noticed a window down at the end of a hall, but it was dark outside. No clue as to where she was.
“That depends on your point of view,” said Luke, with a slight smile. “It’s closer to the truth to say that I didn’t lose. It was the Emperor that won, but his victory was against himself.” He explained the Emperor’s actions, the events of the latter half of the battle, and the judgment he had laid upon the Emperor. It was not vengeance, it was not mercy, it was justice. They were doomed to wander the planes of existence until they had finally balanced the scales of their lives, until they had redeemed themselves. It was a task that would take thousands of years. Mara felt surprised to feel pity in her heart for their counterparts, but she found herself agreeing with Lukes judgment.
“So, what about you?” Mara asked.
Luke smiled. “I am.” His eyes flared silver white first, and then his whole being shimmered. Mara looked at him with awe. He was shinning brighter than all the suns in the galaxy and he was a being of pure energy and light. He was angelic, beyond angelic. He was the Light make human flesh. And then he was her Luke again, but Mara knew what lay beneath. She was not afraid.
“OK, next question: Where are we?”
“The place? Tatooine. The dimension? Not one that you’re familiar with. This isn’t the best of all possible worlds, but it’s the one that I think I like the most.” He glanced at the holo projector and it snapped on. Mara saw an old and gangly looking amphibian on a platform in front of a cheering crowd of millions. He was flanked by an old Jedi that looked vaguely like Luke.
“The Gungun there is named Jar Jar Binks. He’s just been reelected Supreme Chancellor for the seventh straight term. The man next to him is Anakin Skywalker, my father. In this galaxy, Binks accidentally killed first Palpatine’s apprentice, and then Palpatine himself. Eventually, for various reasons, he was put in the senate. A bizarre malfunction in the voting systems computers that went undetected put him into power as the Supreme Chancellor for the first time, and the peace and prosperity that his rule has brought has served to keep him in office, even now that people know how he got there originally. In this galaxy, Anakin never fell to the Dark Side, and instead reformed the Jedi Order peacefully.”
Mara nodded, then frowned as the Gungun tripped and fell, neatly knocking down the official party and several hundred thousands credits of recording equipment on the dais he stood upon. “He’s a bit clumsy, isn’t he?” she asked.
Luke laughed. “You could say that.” Anakin Skywalker, who had kept his feet, went to try to help the Gungun to his feet, but Supreme Chancellor Binks was already standing up. His leg hooked a cable as he did, a cable that had also hooked Anakin Skywalkers leg. Anakin fell to the platform, and it was Binks that helped him up. Mara put a hand over her face and groaned.
Luke laughed again, at Mara’s reaction. She lowered her hand enough to glare at him over her fingers. He reached out and took her hand. “Come on, there’s something I want you to see.” With another glance, the holo turned itself off.
He led her outside, and Mara’s first impression was of sand and quiet. “Definitely Tatooine,” she said. “I suppose it’s appropriate.”
“More than you know yet, but I’ll teach you. I can’t affect things in the universe at large by myself anymore unless it’s under very special circumstances. I need other’s to.”
“Why not? You have the power, don’t you? Why can’t you just wipe out evil?” But as she spoke, Mara understood why Luke couldn’t act.
“The day will come when I do have to use my power again. That will be last day, when time ends as it was originally supposed to. Until then, I cannot interfere myself with destiny. I would like to; I wanted to help Jacen, but wasn’t permitted. I’m outside fate now, and cannot interfere. I can guide, but not act. But it would actually be an evil act to try to wipe out all evil everywhere, because in doing so I’d be taking away the freedom to choose.”
“Hmm. What were you saying about Jacen?” Mara asked, concerned. She nearly stumbled in the dark a moment later. In response, Luke started glowing brightly enough to make their path clear.
“Jacen embraced his destiny. As I said, I wanted to help him. I could not. He chose his path freely, and while it was the right path, it’s a very long dark road he walks on.” Luke’s face was twisted with regret for a moment, and then he sighed gently and peace returned to him.
They topped a rise and sat down together. “What are we waiting for?” Mara asked, sliding an arm around Luke and feeling him do the same. Luke’s glow slowly faded, and she looked at him directly. The innocence and idealism of the farm boy and the strength and maturity of the Jedi Master were evenly mixed on his face. He was still Luke Skywalker, and she loved him.
"Together, Mara, forver. No matter what." Luke said quietly. Light broke over the dark horizon and began to race towards them. The desert sands soon shone golden under the suns rays as the night was pushed back.
Together, they watched the binary sunrise.
T H E E N D
Whatever happened to…
The Empire was greatly weakened by the loss of its Emperor. The Steward was also missing, presumed deactivated. The crew of the Death Star all lost conciousness simultaneously within seconds of the shot being fired on Ithor and awoke hours later on Corellia. The Death Star itself disappeared. No trace it was ever found.
The only survivors of the Death Star assault were Danni Quee, Ebon Pitt, Imowyn Rasa, Myn Donos, Lara Donos, R2D2 and C3P0. They awoke on a beach on Corellia, with no idea how they arrived there. The bodies of all but one of the other members of the squad were there as well, seeming composed and peaceful and death.
The body of Jacen Solo was not present. It is commonly believed that Jacen had reached the level of enlightenment of a Jedi Master, and with his death he faded peacefully into the Force. However, it should be noted that Danni Quee did not subscribe to this belief. Until the time of her how death, she believed that he was still alive somewhere, somehow. She was convinced that fate was not finished with him, and that he would not be permitted to die until his destiny was fulfilled. What that destiny might be she had no idea.
Ithor recovered in time, though the road was long. It was decades before the climate returned to normal, and over six hundred million persons died on a planet with a population of five billion. While Jacen Solo was considered a hero in most places around the galaxy, Ithorians remembered him far differently.
Without the Emperor’s central guiding will or the strict law and order provided by the Imperial fleet, the Empire fell into chaos. The Rebellion rose from its ashes and eventually triumphed. Danni Quee, Ebon Pitt, and Imowyn Rasa-Pitt were probably the most prominent and important of the leaders, and Ebon Pitt was to become the first President of the New Republic.
Danni Quee eventually took apprentices, and is credited for passing on the Jedi tradition to future generations.
The technology that made it possible to jump between galaxies no longer functioned. No scientific explanation was ever truly accepted as to why the jumps became impossible. The Jedi believe that the jumps were only possible in the first place because they were meant to happen, and the technology was largely irrelevant.
Jagged Fel was released from prison and reunited with his father. While he did not fully approve of what his father had done, he understood. He would have done the same for his father.
According to the terms of the peace agreement signed between the allied and invading forces, full control of all captured systems passed into Imperial hands, with the stipulation that after five years they hold democratic elections that would decide their future. To the surprise of both the Empire and Republic, nearly half of those systems remained with the Empire instead of returning to the Republic. The Jedi, led by Kam Solusar in the absence of Luke Skywalker, declared themselves independent of both sides.
Three months after his victory over Grand Admiral Thrawn, Gilad Pellaeon was crowned Emperor Pellaeon I by Kam Solusar. During the same ceremony, Miat Temm was declared Empress. During the ceremony, Jagged Fel and Jaina Solo met for the first time. They hit it off well, having similar interests and experiences. To the surprise of some, within a year Jaina left Rogue Squadron to marry him. They both disappeared into the Unknown Regions shortly thereafter on a long term scouting mission.
Han Solo surprised virtually everyone (including himself) by accepting a position as a Professor of Xenorelations at the prestigious Coruscant Galactic university. Leia Organa Solo found she couldn’t stand being idle for long, and took up the position as the Jedi ambassador to the Republic. However, their adventures were by no means over. While she mourned for Anakin the rest of her life, Leia refused to believe that Jacen was dead.
Baron Fel was soon to be the first elected Prime Minister of the Empire. Together with Emperor Pellaeon they brought Empire into the modern era. The power of the Emperor was balanced somewhat by the power of the new Imperial Parliament.
Borsk Fey’lya stepped down at the end of his first term in office. At about this time, Wedge Antilles entered politics. Bail Organa was elected President following Fey’lya’s departure. Organa died in office, of natural causes.
Hobbie Klivian married a younger Twi’lek technician and continued to serve in the New Republic armed forces for many years afterwards, eventually commanding the Third Fleet. Wes Janson disappeared shortly after the Peace Treaty was signed, and there are a multitude of different theories as to what exactly was his fate. It may be that Hobbie Klivian is the only person who knows the fate of the Rogue, but he has little to say on the matter.
Grand Admiral Thrawn spent four years being held in a top-secret Imperial prison complex. Afterwards, he spent the rest of his life under house arrest in a spacious mansion on Bastion. Having little else to do, he assembled a fine collection of art. At his death, the house given to him was transformed into a museum to showpiece what he had gathered and quickly became famous around the galaxy.
The Jedi endured and prospered.
The story of Luke Skywalker, the story of a young and naïve farm boy, the story of a wise and experienced Jedi Master, the story of the Avatar of Light, never completely faded from the memory of mankind. Though the far away galaxies that they fought over disappeared a long, long time ago, still some vestige of the tale has remained, imperishable. Over time it shifted and changed, but the core truth remained: that there is no power in any galaxy greater than Love.
