Jedi Eowyn;
and when those Characters all of a sudden get up and run off with your story it's a magical moment! Has happened to me once which is enough to keep me going back to get it to happen again.
Right now I'm agonizing over killing one of them off because he just won't shut up and need the others to be more central to the story.
Look forward to seeing what you've got down so far.

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
Killing a character? KILLING A CHARACTER? You're joking, right? Whatever you feel necessary. But, Killing A Character?
Poe once said great art is made by beauty, especially female, dying young. NOOOO...
Now I'm wondering which one has the stop watch ticking over his head. This is a whole new way to up the suspense quotient. I'm surprised I've never seen it in a novel: the author dropping in a direct address to talk about decisions later in the text as to how to treat characters...
The next chapter is the workshop chapter, I assume. I'm looking forward to it. It will be different reading it now that I know what's happened before.

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
6 - Healing
Durgan sat patiently waiting for Qui-gon to answer him. Thinking to himself that this was not going to be a pleasant discussion for either of them. Qui-gon was studying him, feeling Durgan's misgivings. Durgan was completely open to him. He held nothing back now, as if he still could. He let Qui-gon search his feelings.
Qui-gon finally spoke softly, "I am curious about this," he said looking down at his own hand. "But more so about your reluctance to tell me how I'm still here talking to you. When you said you could change the outcome I didn't think it would be like this. There's more here than healing going on."
Durgan smiled and nodded, "The Learner, Obi-wan, you called him, he had to slay the warrior. He had to learn that he could overcome his own pain. We couldn't stop things before that was done, believe me I wanted to. It certainly would have been easier that way for all of us", he said as he gestured with his chin towards Rhayna's sleeping form. "Rhayna has the gift of sight. She determines how the threads get pulled. But you're right, the wound was not healed in the sense that you understand. Rhayna moved flesh that would have been destroyed by the saber to the future where you were lying after Obi-wan destroyed the Khazak. It's called a Rahealian transfer. To move living flesh through time is not for the undisciplined and takes a great deal of energy. You understand what would have happened had she failed?"
He paused waiting for Qui-gon to acknowledge what he meant. Rhayna had taken the chance of being responsible for Qui-gon's death if she had failed. "It was a reasonable risk. But in order to keep you alive while Lohane could heal new flesh and old, Rhayna placed the Bond on you. It allows her to share her strength directly with you and you needed it then to survive."
His meaning was clearly understood by the grave look on Qui-gon's face. He had first hand knowledge of bonds and their strange qualities. But the transfer was something completely outside his scope of experience.
He needed to know more but not just now. He was too weak to think much on it. Durgan offered him more of the tea that Lohane had given him and helped him to sit up.
Qui-gon sipped the tea and held out his wounded hand again. Durgan sighed, "Hmm, back to that. Well, in time it will be a bonding scar," he said as he held his own hand out again. "It's caused by a pyranth crystal being pushed through the palm of your hand and the Cynnar's to create the bond between you. The crystals absorb energy from both, combine it and then it dissolves into the wound. That's why it's slow to heal. The absorption takes some time." Durgan looked down at his own scar and rubbed at it with his thumb, reflecting back to the time when he'd received it. Qui-gon instantly felt the strange mixture of remorse and gratitude twisting in Durgan's mind.
Durgan looked back at him and said, "She didn't tell me before she did it either and it saved me at the time too."
Qui-gon searched his face and asked, "And you regret it?"
Durgan traced the scar on his palm, "Not now, no, but at the time ... lets just say I had a hard time 'adjusting'."
Qui-gon gave him a questioning look, "Adjusting? Durgan, why can I read you so plainly now when before ... ",
Qui-gon's voice trailed off as he realized he'd answered his own question.
Durgan just looked at him with a knowing smirk, "I can't keep you out now. The roishul dampeners don't work on the bond. That means you can't keep me out either. Like it or not we're about to get to know one another very well. It'll take a little getting use to, adjusting. We try to be polite about it and not read one another directly unless invited to do so, but like shouting, sometimes we can't help but hear one another."
Qui-gon leaned back on the cushions turning this over in his mind. He looked to Rhayna again and saw Lohane looking back at him. There was no smile there this time. He could feel Lohane's compassion and echo of the remembered words Rhayna had put in his mind earlier. He was not just bonded to Rhayna it was to all of them. "Forgiveness" Rhayna had pleaded while he was drifting. He reached out to Rhayna with his mind. He wanted to understand her why she had said this to him but she was in a trance like sleep.
Durgan felt him reaching //Qui-gon, she did what she thought was right. Would you have done any less? She needs rest now, ask me your questions//
Qui-gon looked at him coldly, "You made a great issue of getting my consent and then you don't tell me about this. How am I supposed to give my consent to something I don't understand?"
Durgan sighed and looked down at the floor then back, "That was about your choosing to live, when you took that road nothing was certain again. Any number of things could have ended differently."
Looking at his face again he continued, "Would knowing have changed your mind? If Rhayna had told you everything you could have refused and we wouldn't be having this conversation. She decided she would risk having your anger now then to not have it at all. Was that the right decision? It depends on your point of view, doesn't it? She's asked your forgiveness for this. The question now is what are you going to do about it."
Qui-gon struggled to further sit up. Durgan steadied him and helped him put his feet on the floor. He was light-headed still and weak but he only had pain now when he moved.
Durgan took a length of cloth from his belt and silently bound up the wound in his hand then stood and casting his thoughts to Rhayna took some water to Lohane who was still watching Qui-gon out of the corner of his eye. Lohane was trying to get a grasp on how Qui-gon was reacting to all of this as well as his physical condition. He wasn't too comfortable with what he was feeling. Qui-gon was fighting the whole idea of the bond.
Qui-gon took several deep breaths to steady his thoughts. He no longer trusted them. He remembered Obi-wan's pain when he fell, his own willingness to accept his death at that instant. But he had always chosen to live, given himself to whatever means the Force would show him to keep him alive and had done it without question. He should just accept this as another challenge. Why was he hesitating now? There must be something missing, something he wasn't seeing. He tried to envision what his acceptance of the situation would bring him. Further isolation from his order, he'd never concerned himself with that before so why dwell on it now. But these people were not Jedi, raised and trained in a value system that he was familiar with. How did they deal with discord, conflict and emotions? There would be cultural differences too. Who was this "Cynnar" that Durgan referred to? It was plain he meant Rhayna but what did the title mean? . Four individuals bonded.... It could only lead to disaster. Even Sith couldn't get beyond two without destroying one another. The Jedi themselves, had strict codes concerning bonding between Master and apprentice and this bond he could already sense would be hundreds of times stronger. How would they benefit should he accept them? It didn't make sense. He couldn't sense any discord among them, they would all accept whatever he decided. And they were waiting for that decision. He could feel it clearly from Lohane and Durgan at least. Rhayna was just a distant presence now.
Durgan finally said, "The decision is yours, we won't interfere, accept us or deny us. We can't remove the bond, but we can remove ourselves but you'd still feel it and us. I wish we could give you more time Qui-gon but Rhayna has spent that coin already." Durgan looked down at her and Qui-gon could feel through the bond the devotion Durgan had to her.
Durgan continued, "I wouldn't discuss our presence with your council or anyone else just yet. Some how there's information getting back to our Druuk about your movements, hence our black friend wouldn't have been

Qui Gon torture! This is good! OK. You gave me great comments on my story. I'm looking for something significant to say. I'll try again tomorrow. All that I think after reading it is that I liked it. I find I am "seeing" the room and the characters. I care about the three and Qui Gon. It doesn't slow down. And Qui Gon has real mysteries to figure out: what is this bond, who is the Jedi traitor, who are these people, who is their enemy. The whole idea of 4 adults trying to live peaceably while hearing mutual thoughts is fascinating. Is there a positive resolution? I'm looking forward to finding out.
As of now, we're off the TPM script. I wish that Qui Gon had survived in th movie to mentor Anakin. Now I get that very senario.
Don't kill Qui Gon! Don't kill Qui Gon! Please? JE

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
JE,
Don't worry, he's not the one giving me problems.
7 - Vergence
The two Jedi and friend went to the quarters that the queen had assigned to them and bid them rest. Easier said than done. Qui-gon was weak, Obi-wan was bruised and exhausted but Anakin was only getting started in exploring his new surroundings.
Food was brought to them and another healer was offered but Qui-gon refused politely stating that they would tend to themselves. They sat and tried to eat while Obi-wan related just what Anakin had accomplished with Anakin's added comments. It was clear that Obi-wan no longer doubted Anakin's uniqueness. Just as Qui-gon had said, the boy had surprised him. He now understood Qui-gon's stubbornness in the face of the council's decision. He could see that Qui-gon was fighting his exhaustion and he still wanted to talk to him about the Nafieri.
Qui-gon asked Anakin, "How did you come to know the Nafieri on Tatooine?"
Anakin replied casually, "They were there trading ionite for com parts for their transport. Watto didn't like them much. The young one liked to haggle too much. But they were always nice to me."
Qui-gon just looked down at his plate and sighed. It was becoming all too apparent that the Force was pushing him towards these Nafieri as much as it was towards Anakin. Why did he want to resist it? They said they needed him. He would have to tell Obi-wan and trust that he would understand why he couldn't walk away from this.
Qui-gon ruffled Anakin's hair and said "It's time you rested now, go clean up and let Obi-wan show you where you'll sleep. I'll come in and say good night when you're ready."
Qui-gon looked pleadingly at Obi-wan //I don't mean to keep pushing him on you, but I'm so tired.//
Obi-wan replied //It's all right, I don't mind, I'll see to him.//
Qui-gon thanked him and carefully got up and moved to the more comfortable couch and put his feet up. When Obi-wan returned, he found Qui-gon sleeping. He hated to wake him but he did promise to speak to Anakin. So he reluctantly shook his shoulder to wake him and felt the unusual warmth through his robes. Qui-gon slowly opened his eyes and blinked the sleep from them. He heavily got to his feet and just stood for a moment getting his balance. Obi-wan didn't like the way he looked. He hadn't been this weak earlier.
"Master, perhaps I should ask the healer to come back, I think you have a fever." Obi-wan offered.
Qui-gon said, "I'll be fine with some rest, lets get Anakin settled and then I have to talk with you." He went and said good night to Anakin and with Obi-wan's help he went and sat on the couch but didn't put his feet up for fear of falling asleep again. He was beginning to think that Obi-wan was right. He did have a fever. He asked for some water.
Obi-wan was becoming increasingly concerned. He'd noticed the bandage on Qui-Gon's hand when they were eating but hadn't asked what it was. He now looked down at Qui-gon's hand and asked to see it. Qui-gon gave it to him with a smile and said, "That's just what we have to talk about. But first, did you get a message to Coruscant? They must know what's happened here and Anakin's role in it."
Obi-wan nodded to him and said, " Yes, Master Yoda is coming and bringing some of the council with him to investigate recent events." He unwrapped the bandage exposing the angry looking puncture wound that went through his hand.
Qui-gon continued, "Good. The Nafieri that you met today, I've met them before on Tatooine and on Coruscant. They aren't what they appear to be. They're from a dead world on the outer rim. They're Force sensitive, very skilled and very strong, so much so that I don't know what they can't do or who they truly serve. They told me what would happen here and offered to alter it for Anakin's sake and mine. They asked my consent to do this and I gave it. This" he said looking down at his hand, " is no doubt the cause of the fever. It's part of a bonding process that I don't fully understand yet, but the woman, Rhayna, has the same wound."
Qui-gon closed his eyes for moment searching out Rhayna's presense then continued, "And she has this same fever. They made it clear that this would be difficult to heal. Obi-wan, I'm bonded to them now, I can feel their thoughts and they mine. Do you understand?"
Obi-wan asked incredulously, "You mean to this woman Rhayna?"
Qui-gon shook his head, "No, I mean somehow to all of them! They can not or will not undo this. I'm not sure which but they're convinced that they needed to do it to heal the saber wound and that wound is indeed healed." He looked down at the hole in his tunic and continued. "I'll have to share this with the council eventually but they made a point of warning me to be careful in doing so. Whoever the dark warrior was, he knew we would be here and plainly he was not interested in the Queen."
Qui-gon put his head back and closed his eyes for a moment. "Could you get more water, Obi-wan?"
Obi-wan was now alarmed about Qui-gon's fever. The puncture was showing all the signs of being infected but Qui-gon should have been able to correct that with the Force. He got the water and watched as he drained the cup. Then Qui-gon carefully put his feet up on the couch and lay back. "Obi-wan I need sleep now." He closed his eyes and with a slightly shaking hand reached out to pull his cloak around him.
"Master, let me call the healers, you're not improving." Obi-wan waited, but Qui-gon didn't answer. He took Qui-gon's injured hand and tried using the healing techniques he had been taught by Qui-gon but nothing changed.
He replaced the bandage and he went to get some cold towels from the bath. When he returned there was a soft chime at door.
Obi-wan stopped and reached out with the Force to feel who was on the other side of the door.
It was the gray Nafieri healer, Lohane, and he was carrying a container of some sort of ... liquid, warm. Obi-wan looked at Qui-gon and realized he could do nothing more to help him. After what he had witnessed today he would take the risk and let the Nafieri in.
He could feel no threat from his presence but was not totally comfortable with the idea.
Lohane, could feel Obi-wan's distress though the door and brought the veil down from his face hoping that would help.
He said, "Obi-wan, I've brought something for Qui-gon Jinn's fever." He waited.
Obi-wan finally opened the door still holding the wet towel and stepped aside to let Lohane in.
Lohane bowed and smiled then went in and carefully waited for Obi-wan to show him to Qui-gon. Lohane could feel his apprehension over his presence and realized that Qui-gon must have told him about their new "relationship". He would have to careful here, be very polite, so as to not upset Obi-wan further.
Obi-wan returned with a shallow bow and hesitated for a moment while Lohane just stood there waiting. Then realizing that Lohane was waiting for him to lead him to Qui-gon who was on the other side of the room in plain view.
"Oh, this way', Obi-wan said, and then went ahead of Lohane to stand beside Qui-gon.
"Please, sit Obi-wan", Lohane offered trying to relieve some of the tension between them. He set the container of tea down on the table and pulled a chair up next to the couch that Qui-gon was sleeping on and sat down. He felt Qui-gon's forehead with the back of hand and closed his eyes for a moment. Then looked down at the floor said to Obi-wan, "He's very ill, but I know the cause and we can deal with it."
Obi-wan coolly replied, "You did this to him, he told me. He thinks you can undo it but won't."
Lohane just sighed. "We didn't deceive him Obi-wan, we couldn't now if we wanted to. He can see into us. We want his trust Obi-wan, what do we have to do to get it?"
Lohane took Qui-gon's head in his hands and closed his eyes. Through Qui-gon's sleep he made him understand that he should not try to correct the fe

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
I don't want any of them to die. And the clock's ticking with Yoda et al about to arrive. What's Qui Gon going to tell them? This is very good!!
I want to know what the vision was. That's a great detail, and withholding it is beautiful.

JE, for you... noboby gets hurt yet!
8 - Visions
Rhayna, Lohane and Durgan sat on cushions on the floor in their quarters with the lights dimmed. The rest of palace was long asleep now but they were still discussing the meaning of Lohane's vision.
Lohane continued, "I saw all of us and Qui-Gon, we were in front of him, kneeling I think. I can't tell where we were, just that we were all together…"
Durgan bristled at the thought and looked askance at Rhayna and said, "I don't think that very likely." Rhayna silenced him with a stern look.
"Lohane, the towel, it seems to have triggered the vision, how does it fit? What did you see immediately after Obi-wan handed the towel to you?"
"I saw Durgan handing me a towel. No it wasn't a towel. It was a white cloth, fine enough to see through, it was wet and I took it and I said some words," Lohane was struggling to bring the images back now. He looked at Rhayna with astonishment. " I wiped Qui-Gon's face and gave the cloth to you…. "
Durgan suddenly stood and paced again. Waving his hand said, "No, this is too much, this can't be what it looks like, I'm there aren't I? Would I do what you're suggesting? I don't think so!"
Rhayna pleaded, "Durgan control yourself please" then to Lohane, "Can you remember any of the words, Lohane? Don't try to put them together just try to remember them."
Lohane closed his eyes and bowed his head trying to remember anything that would help. He shared what little of the memory he had with Rhayna but there was little the she could see that Lohane hadn't already told them. Lohane shook his head, "I see him sitting there, calmly, resigned to what's happening but I can't hear myself speak. I don't know what I said to him. I'm sorry Rhayna, if I hadn't panicked…if I had had the courage to look at it instead of running away…."
Rhayna sat back and sighed, "Well, maybe it will come to you in a dream. Sleep now, Durgan takes first watch, then me, then Lohane. Durgan be mindful of Qui-Gon, he's going to want an explanation for all this."
Durgan replied, "Let's hope he was too sick to see any of the vision, I don't want to have to explain any of this to him."
"Durgan you should know that what Lohane saw, I've seen something similar. I don't want to be quick to claim that I understand the complete meaning of it but if its what I think it is, well, it's very important for the Jedi and us. I can't afford to be wrong about this. If you hear from Qui-Gon, I need to know, don't try to explain this without me." Rhayna fixed him with a look that brooked no discussion of the issue.
That sent Durgan's thoughts off into clouded waters. Rhayna wouldn't have been so stern if she didn't believe that there could be truth in Lohane's vision. But how could there be? Qui-Gon didn't even like them, let alone trust them enough to be involved in what Lohane saw. He hadn't accepted the bond as yet although he hadn't denied it either and Rhayna was in no rush to push him into that decision, at least not yet.
*************
The next day the Jedi Council members arrived and the past events were recounted and discussed. The morning was mostly political formalities and serious discussions wouldn't take place until the afternoon. Qui-Gon took Anakin to a small ceremony with the queen where she presented him with symbols of her gratitude and the thanks of her people. Qui-Gon then excused himself to go and rest again due to his recent injuries and left Anakin with Obi-wan. He went to find Rhayna. He wanted to talk to her alone before the afternoon's formal meeting with the council. He was still trying to make up his mind about telling the council who the Nafieri really were.
As he approached the door to the Nafieri quarters it opened before he got there.
Qui-Gon slowed and then went in. Durgan was at a console with his back to him reading com logs.
"Jinn,". Durgan acknowledged without turning around. Qui-Gon stood looking at him as the door closed behind him. Qui-Gon didn't say anything he just stood there accessing Durgan's mood, which was less than congenial.
"Rhayna is in the solarium," showed him the way in his mind but never turned around. Qui-Gon got the hint and proceeded to the solarium where Rhayna was practicing forms. She acknowledged him with a nod but continued in her practice. Qui-Gon was not pleased with the cool reception he was getting. He noticed that Lohane was missing.
"Rhayna, is Lohane well?" he asked.
She stopped and looked at him, "You'd know if you'd use the bond."
Qui-Gon considered this. She was correct, perhaps he was unconsciously avoiding it. "He was very upset last night, I came to find out if I somehow caused it. I couldn’t read him very well in the state I was in", he said watching closely at how she received this. He did catch some small sign of relief from her but didn't let on that he'd noticed. So there was more to this than they were sharing with him. He decided he needed to get this settled before he made up his mind about what to tell the council.
"He's sleeping still. Are you well then? Is you hand better?" she replied ignoring Qui-Gon's question about the cause of Lohane's distress.
Qui-Gon turned and walked to the windows with his hands behind his back and sent to her
//I'm fine now. Lohane knew exactly what I was trying to do and that it was causing my fever. I trust your fever was less severe. It's very helpful to have the appropriate knowledge when addressing a situation you've never been in before.//
He turned and faced her with a cold stare.
Rhayna could see this train of thought would only lead to somewhere very unpleasant. She stopped her practice and put her robe on and indicated a cushion for Qui-Gon to sit on. Qui-Gon accepted with a nod and went and sat next to her.
"I apologize for my abruptness Qui-Gon. Peace?" she paused to see if he accepted this.
He did but showed no sign of relenting. He wanted information and would not accept 'later' for an answer. "What upset Lohane?"
Rhayna understood his mood now and sighed,
"Lohane is starting to have visions. Something last night triggered one. Lohane doesn't want this gift. He's not comfortable with it. Your people have a sort of infrastructure for teaching the skills to cope with these things. Lohane only has only Durgan and I. Durgan has no experience with this sort of thing. Sometimes I forget what it's like, I've lived with it for so long now. I haven't been a very good teacher for him. "
"Is this why you consider me to be your future?" Qui-Gon asked "You want me to help you with his training?"
Rhayna looked at him with surprise, "If it were only that simple. We'd hoped you'd accept the bond and we then could more openly share our skills with you and yes you could help us in that capacity. Is that why you're our future? No. If what Lohane saw is correct and it's the same as what I've seen, it's has a much larger impact than you or I would wish to deal with."
Qui-Gon returned her look of surprise. Rhayna took his hand to inspect the wound, which was now closed but still angry looking. She trace the scar with her fingers and asked, "Does it still cause you pain?"
Qui-Gon said, "Yes, but I choose not to notice."
She took her scared hand and covered his with it and made him feel the bond. Qui-Gon was not comfortable with this but let her continue.
"Qui-Gon, how much of the prophecy have you studied? Anakin is only the beginning of it. What does the prophecy say about the future of the Jedi?" She paused letting him consider her question.
Qui-Gon reflected for a moment,"I know there is a dark time coming and the Jedi have a role to play in it. The Chosen One will restore balance to the Force and lead us into the light again. This is the most widely accepted interpretation of the prophecy. What the dark time means is anyone's guess at this point."
Rhayna nodded. "This is what we understand also, but the dark time yo

Rhui,
I'm about halfway through what you've got so far -- I'll send nitpicky text stuff bt e-mail when I'm done (you know, the silly stuff about moving a comma here or there that no one wants to be bothered with on the board).
You have an interesting story set up here, with a neat new alien species. I'm not sure what I make of your implication about Palpy's origins, but you're making it work so far. Looking human doesn't mean he is.

If you need to kill a character, of course you should. But I like them. You're the artist, you've got to make the call. But I'm happy that there aren't any dead leads yet!

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
9/1 - Allegiance
As Qui-Gon turned to leave the room where he and Obi-wan had met with the six members of the council, he felt that Ki-Adi Mundi, at least, sould call him back to give him direction in the investigation but he felt nothing from any of them, except Obi-wan. Qui-Gon was disappointed. Did they really want him to continue the investigation? It seems there was little real support for it and why had they given Anakin to Obi-wan? And the knighting, too many things were being done outside of Jedi tradition. That in and of it self was not too alarming, but that he was not being offered any explanation for it, that was not the way things had happened in the past. When Qui-Gon had blurred the lines of tradition before he was always strongly reminded of it and great effort made to explain why the traditions were important. They defined the Jedi. It was who they were. Here things were different and he was not being told why. In the past he had always been able to puzzle out the motives of the council. He could read between the lines and use his abilities to see what their real intentions were. But this was baffling. They were deliberatley keeping things from him. He did like it.
Again the questions were coming far faster than the answers. He needed time to put all this in perspective and there was never enough of that. He returned to the rooms he shared with Obi-wan and busied himself with organizing the few belongings that he had with him. He didn't know where he was going but felt he would not being staying here too long. He'd wait for Obi-wan to return and then contact Ki-Adi to tell him that he had some COM log indications of where events here were being directed from. Perhaps he would gain some insight into the situation from Ki-Adi's reaction to this information.
He also had to contact the Kadwyri. They'd be waiting. What would he tell them? Rhayna was wrong about him getting his answers from council. She may have more info then he did concerning what was happening. And if Durgan had really been posing as Nakai for all this time how could the council not know of it?
**********************
Obi-wan sadly watched Qui-Gon go. He wondered just what his last remark had meant, he was wondering about alot of things just now but he didn't have time to wonder for long. Yoda called his attention back to the moment. The ritual for taking a Padawan was completed right then and there in the room with all present.
"Obi-wan Kenobi, return to the temple with the council members you will. Speak of this later we will." Yoda said and dismissed them with a nod.
Obi-wan and Anakin headed off to their quarters to get ready to leave with the council. "Obi-wan sir, do I call you Master now?" asked Anakin.
"Yes Anakin, I guess you do. Although, I can't say I'm very comfortable with it. We'll both have to get used to it. " Obi-wan said reflecting back to his own first days with Qui-Gon.
"Obi- Master, why wouldn't they let Qui-Gon train me? Did I do something wrong? I mean, I thought he wanted to." Anakin asked not worried or hurt but just curious.
"I don't know Ani, I know he did want to train you, very badly. Maybe that's why they wouldn't let him. We can ask him about it, I'm sure he'll explain it." Obi-wan said speculating himself as they walked.
They went into their rooms to find Qui-Gon deep in thought gazing out the window. Obi-wan sadly realized he was not able to feel Qui-Gon's presence before he entered the room. Qui-Gon turned and smiled at him understanding his new isolation.
"Master, I didn't know. Why are they doing this?" Obi-wan blurted out.
"Just Qui-Gon now, Obi-wan. Why didn't you ask them? You're a knight now and have that right. You've certainly seen exactly how it's done often enough." Qui-Gon looked at him from the corner of his eye smiling.
"Something is happening and someone wants me plainly left out of it. I can't fathom why just yet but I'm it's not totally related to Anakin. I must talk with Ki-Adi and see if anything can be learned there. When will you be returning to the temple?" he asked resuming his gaze out the window.
"Tomorrow, the next day, I'm not really sure…. how did you know? Are you going back too?" Obi-wan asked.
"Obi-wan, it's obvious that they want Anakin and I separated, that’s why they gave him to you and have ordered you back to the temple with them. As for myself, I will wait and see what Ki-Adi has to say. That will determine where I go next." He sighed and frowned at Anakin watching him pack the few things that he called his own, mostly gifts from the queen.
Qui-Gon called Anakin over to him and kneeling said, "Ani, you will listen to your Master now, won't you? Treat him just as you would have me. I'm sure the council thought that my mission here was too dangerous for a new learner and that's why they wouldn't let me train you. You did nothing wrong. Obi-wan is wise and strong and he'll train you well. I'm sure of it. Now finish gathering your things and we'll all have something to eat when you're done."
Anakin smiled back at Qui-Gon and said "Yes Sir," and went off to finish.
Obi-wan looked pained at the exchange. He didn't see himself as wise or strong at all. He didn't even have the nerve to ask the council a question. Maybe that's what Qui-Gon meant by wise. "Qui-Gon, where will you go to search for the Sith?"
"I'm not sure, but I do know I'll find very little by staying here. Rhayna and Durgan have COM traces from Coruscant, of all places, indicating that there maybe some connection there. And the council apparently doesn't want me on Coruscant. It's possible that I'll go with the Kadwyri. But I must get Ki-Adi's approval first. I have to go and meet with him soon," he explained.
"Master, what did you mean by "always"? Obi-wan asked bluntly.
"Hmmm," Qui-Gon smiled to himself, "Well I meant just that Obi-wan, Always. No matter where I am or what I've become, I am your friend and will help you in anyway that I can. There's no great mystery to it. You'll understand better when you and Anakin have spent a little more time together, now lets have something to eat, we both will have little time for it later." he said smiling.
When the meal was finished Qui-Gon said to Obiwan, "I will speak with you later Obi-wan. Anakin, do your best for your new master, promise? "
Anakin furrowed his brow and said, "I always
do my best, Master" Qui-Gon just smiled and ruffled his hair.
Qui-Gon gathered his pack and set out to meet with Ki-Adi. Obi-wan watched him go once again feeling the new emptiness of not being able to sense his mind.
********************
Rhayna sat with a very shaken Lohane. The vision was back and this time he had stood his ground and faced it with Rhayna's help. It was clear now what the vision was about, but the use of this new information was still causing debate. Lohane was appalled at the concept of it all but elated at the same time. He just needed reassuring that he was interpreting things correctly.
Rhayna was more composed and reserved in her reaction considering this vision directly addressed her future more that Durgan's or Lohane's although they certainly would be greatly impacted by it and there was also the issue Qui-Gon's reaction to this. He hadn't even fully accepted them yet. What would he do with this knowledge in his present state of mind. He was questioning everyone and everything at this point, including his own motives .
How could this best be presented this to him. Rhayna had already labeled Qui-Gon as a man of action. She knew the signs well enough, having learned to handle Durgan's moods over time. But she didn't have a great deal of time to work out the best means. She would now have to bring matters to a conclusion quickly. She had thought about this in the past but had hoped she wouldn't have to force the issue of accetptance of the bond on Qui-Gon. He didn't like to be pushed. She knew tha

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
wooo whoooo!
opening: Qui Gon is blind because the council is keeping info from him, which contrasts to the previous chapter where the council is blind because the insist on acting blind!
Your Ani is coming off like a real child, btw.
Closing: how parallel are the 3 to the Jedi council? They are willing to bully Qui Gon? Can anyone bully Qui Gon?
I'm looking forward to it!

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
9/2
Qui-Gon went to the garden where he and Ki-Adi had agreed to meet. He quickly scanned the interior noting all possible exits and the life forms within. Ki-Adi was not here yet. Nothing threatening was present. He went in and went to a corner where he could observe the entrance and sat in the grass breathing in the fragrances around him.
It was a very pleasant place to be right now. He needed some peace. He let his mind wander just a little. He could feel the Kadwyri through the bond, planning, anxious, busy with preparations, most likely for their departure. He could no longer feel Obi-wan. The loss sadden him, but he had no time now to grieve. He could feel the garden, breathing, growing, content with itself. He shared in that contentment.
Ki-Adi finally appeared and seeing him turned walking toward him. Qui-Gon moved to get up and Ki-Adi motioned for him stay as he was. He came and just stood near Qui-Gon looking around, feeling the garden as well.
"Being here now," he said wearily, "who would believe the darkness to come. Yet we must. You were surprised by the council today?" Ki-Adi asked.
"Yes, they're shutting me out, not that that hasn't happened before, but this time I really don't understand why. Anakin has something to do with it, but there is more to it than that." Qui-Gon mused as he watched a snail moving slowly along a blade of grass in front of him.
"The return of the Sith is no small thing. The council is greatly concerned but divided as to what path of action to take." Ki-Adi moved to sit on a stone bench next to him. "The transport vehicle was tracked for some distance but lost. I have no other information other than the control board that you brought to us. It does indeed track force sensitives. This means that the owner of this technology can detect any Jedi. The council is curious as to how you came to be in possession of this, as am I."
"I told the council, It was taken from a strange probe droid on Tatooine. They know I can’t lie to them or you. What more do you want of me? Is the council questioning my loyalty now as well as my judgement?" Qui-Gon replied bristling at the idea.
"Peace, Qui-Gon Jinn, I have no doubts about your motives. But I feel I'm not hearing all that I may need to hear from you. You see, I too know the value of not revealing all before it is needed. I can keep my own counsel when it serves me to do so. Do you have anything else to share concerning the Sith that attacked you?" Ki-Adi asked casually gazing out over the garden, waiting for his reply.
Qui-Gon studied his face, hoping for a hint of where to go next in this strange conversation.
"Ki-Adi, what do you know of the prophecy of the arrival of Chosen One and the Dark time that follows? What does it say to you about the future after the restoration of balance?"
Qui-Gon went back to watching the snail again while he waited for an answer. Feeling a curious attraction to it and how it relentlessly moved along the grass.
"Ah…" he nodded as he paused to consider his words carefully, "After the Chosen One restores balance there will be a time of nothingness, preparing for the new beginning. And then a new cycle will start as it always does. That is what is says to me. Kir-Den Nakai and I have spoken of it often. What does it mean to you Qui-Gon Jinn?" he asked looking down at him.
Qui-Gon abruptly turned to look at him. "Nakai is alive then?"
"Perhaps, no one has heard from him in these many cycles now. I do not feel confident that this means he's dead. He could be doing his 'research' still," Ki-Adi tilted his head and smiled at him.
Ki-Adi Mundi knew about Durgan. Qui-Gon studied him again, then looked hard at the snail again to stall while he absorbed the full impact of this new information. He didn't like these subtle political conversations.
He decided to go right to the heart of it and look for hints of things that wanted to remain hidden. "There is evidence in the COM logs that orders were coming here from Coruscant during the communications black out. The Federation would be taking their orders from the Sith if the Sith are involved. What are the possibilities of a Sith presence existing on Coruscant without the council's knowledge?"
Qui-Gon turned to study Ki-Adi's face again while he waited for an answer.
Ki-Adi calmly put his fingertips together and bowed his head. "That prospect is disturbing indeed. I do not believe it would be possible for the Council to not know of it. It would seem that if they were aware of this premise of yours, they would not want you to be on Coruscant."
Qui-Gon looked back to the snail but it was gone. He felt a curious sensation. He missed the snail. How could he let himself be so distracted by such a creature? He felt the grass with his hand and it was alive. He suddenly needed to stand to clear his head.
He got up and remembered Ki-Adi sitting next to him. "And indeed it seems that the council doesn't want me to go back to Coruscant. What are your wishes regarding this investigation that I'm to conduct?"
"My wish is for you to follow your instincts in this. I have been asked by the Council to stay here and oversee the investigation even though, as you know, there is little here to oversee. You must tread lightly Qui-Gon Jinn. Your life is at risk in this, as is mine. Go with the Kadwyri if you wish. I will make excuses for your behavior. Stay in contact with me, but do so discreetly. Use Nakai when necessary." With that said Ki-Adi stood and bowed to him and left the garden but not the way that he had come in.
So there it was. Qui-Gon stood astonished at what Ki-Adi had told him. It would seem he would have to trust the Kadwyri now. He closed his eyes and inhaled the scents of the garden again.
He turned to go back to the corridor and as he left the garden noticed how aroused he was. He had to stop in the gateway and collect his thoughts before he could continue. He seldom if ever felt like this without provocation that he could recall. Was it the garden? How could he be so disturbed by a simple garden? He turned and looked back one last time and it seemed overflowing with life. It made him feel as if he were overflowing as well.
He started down the corridor and realized whatever he was feeling was not coming from the garden at all. His arousal was becoming more urgent with every passing moment. He struggled to stay focused on his surroundings, especially in light of Ki-Adi's recent warning. The feelings were coming through the bond. The Kadwyri were doing this to him.
He cautiously made his way to the Nafieri's quarters. He had to stop several times and collect himself or become overwhelmed by feelings that were impossible to quell, passion and need washing over him in waves. He needed to get to somewhere safe and wait for this whatever it was to pass. It was taking all his will to not stop and just let these feelings inundate him.
He finally reached the Nafieri's door. It didn't open for him this time. He had to signal his presence to those within. The door opened and he went in and immediately closed it and leaned against it, once again trying to collect his thoughts.
Durgan was leaning back in the COM console chair but with his back to the console. He was bare chested, covered in a fine sheen of sweat and breathing heavily. "Welcome Qui-Gon, have a seat, Ulan tea?" he offered as he ran his hand back over his hair smoothing lose stands back off his fore head.
It only took Qui-Gon one look to know that Durgan was "afflicted" with the same condition that he was experiencing. Qui-Gon droppedt his pack, sat on the bench and stared toward the sleeping chamber in the back of the suite. Lohane and Rhayna.... through the bond.
"I thought Lohane was… young enough to… Will the tea help?" he asked taking a cup and draining it without taking his eyes from the door.
Durgan smiled at the pack landing on the floor and replied, "Lohane is yo

Re: "Legacy" TPM AU fanfic
10/1 - Hunted
Lohane went to bathe leaving Durgan, sitting gazing at the closed door that Rhayna and Qui-Gon had just passed through. Lohane was concerned by the distant look on Durgan's face. It wasn't like Durgan. He wasn't given to bouts of contemplation like he himself was. The situation was plainly weighing heavily on him. He'd made a note to talk Rhayna.
Lohane called to him from the bath, "Durgan, get some food out, we may as well eat before we leave. I'll even eat your rahsa if you make some."
Durgan sighed and brought his attention back to the present. He went to set the food out.
Lohane returned with his long, dark hair wet and started putting it into the customary braids that Nafieri wear under shabbas.
He looked over to Qui-Gon's pack and remarked, "Travels light, doesn't he."
Durgan just looked at the pack and grunted as he set the food on the table. As he went to take his turn in the bath he said to Lohane, "See that you leave some this time. Rhayna hasn't eaten and I don't know if Qui-Gon cares for rahsa- mine or anyone else's. Mind the dampeners."
He took the rest of his clothes off slowly and noticed he was very tired, not from anything physical that he'd done, it was the strain of the circumstances wearing on him. He was still trying to grasp what the new arrangement would mean. Children, the concept was not foreign to him, but what would they do with them? How could they do their work and raise children? It was Rhayna's problem. She would have to find a way, she always did.
And what of Qui-Gon? Once he had played his part would he continue to stay with them? He made it clear he was still bound to the Jedi. But had been said before Qui-Gon understood just what the outcome of accepting the bond meant. Did Jedi have children? There were always at the temple but it was not clear to whom they belonged. Ki-Adi had never mentioned it. Of course, it hadn't really come up in conversation before either. He would put the questions before him in future.
He went to the table to eat. He was embarrassed to find himself looking at the closed door again. Qui-Gon was inadvertly broadcasting. Rhayna was attempting to suppress it but Qui-Gon was strong and she was occupied with maintaining her own controls. He and Lohane would be disturbed by the proceedings unless steps were taken, from inside the room, at least. Durgan was beginning to realize he was already disturbed without this added burden and he shouldn't have been. He finished his food and continued to dress while trying to put his feelings in order.
"I'm tired Lohane, braid for me?" Durgan asked as finished putting his boots on. Lohane had been making crystals and stopped to study Durgan. It was unusual for him to admit to fatigue even if he was about to fall over from it.
"Durgan?" he asked, "You're concerned for Rhayna. It'll be fine. I'm in a position to know. But he could be quieter about it. I suppose I've got it coming."
"It's not concern for Rhayna that's your area. It's him. If he'd tried to leave I didn't want to stop him. Must be the bond; I'm not used to it yet. I don't like to feel that hesitation." Durgan said reflecting.
Durgan had learned long ago to never hesitate, it would get you killed. To feel it now was very disturbing. Was he getting soft? Did they no longer see enough combat for him to retains his edge? He would test himself with Qui-Gon on the upcoming journey. There would be time then.
"Maybe it's what he wants, had you thought about that?" Lohane said quietly glancing back to the closed door.
Durgan had thought this too and Lohane knew it at once from the look on his face.
*************************
The room was close and warm. The curtains were drawn to keep the daylight soft.
Qui-Gon and Rhayna studied one another, each wanting answers to questions that time would not allow. Rhayna wanted to dispense with formalities and just do what needed to be done, but not at the cost of offending this man. Considering their past encounters, he had been patient, although firm, about what they had asked of him. The task itself would not be difficult. He was beautiful and the thought of his abilities combined with hers was more motivation than she would need to overcome any reservations she could have concerning her forwardness. And yet she very much wanted his respect for her position in all of this.
"Qui-Gon, I know this seems rushed but the sooner the future is assured the safer it will be for all of us. Do you understand?" she waited for him to acknowledge the truth of what she said.
"I understand", he said smiling and looking at her with compassion for her uneasiness with him. "But it doesn’t keep me from wanting more time. Are you sure this is what the vision is about? I don't sense anything for the future that you see but I feel the importance of what we do now."
Rhayna reached out her hand to him, "Let me share the vision with you. Perhaps you'll see something I've missed."
Qui-Gon took her hand and sat next to her on the couch. She opened the images to him. The dark swirling faces, torn by pain, resigned to despair. Faces of beings some he knew, some he didn't recognize personally but knew only as Jedi, running, hunted by forces strong and vast, belonging to something very familiar and yet strange, close yet distant. Jedi, some frantically fighting to give others a chance of escape and then just darkness, stillness, no conflict, just emptiness.
Then his own face with Rhayna holding the cloth before it, Durgan standing behind him, his own hands taking the cloth from Rhayna's and placing it to her face. He knew this was the future followed by what had just passed. But then there were other faces, he didn't recognize, some were human, some were Jedi, with the Kadwyri there behind them as Durgan had stood behind him in the ritual. It then occurred to him that Ki-Adi knew what was about to happen here and if whoever was leaking information from the council found out, Rhayna's life would be in as much danger as his own, if it wasn't already.
"I've known that for some time now," Rhayna said stoically tracing the bond scar on his palm. "But this is new to you, you've never been hunted before? I hope your council makes good use of the technology you brought them. We've been running for a very long time and have been good enough at it to survive this long and now for a time we'll be the hunters. Soon it won't matter, but for now, yes, there is risk. More reason to do our duty as soon as possible…."
She said sitting next to him looking into his face, trying to feel his thoughts. "Is there anything that you want me to know concerning your customs? I've limited knowledge regarding your beliefs and have no wish to offend you. What do the Jedi do to prepare to open the gates of life?" she asked wishing she had the time to get to know him better.
Qui-Gon sensed that she was apprehensive. He hadn't thought that she could be after the dedication and confidence that she showed performing the ritual.
He reflected on what she'd just asked him. "The Jedi", he said half smiling, "although having great reverence for life, have no specific customs for the occasion. But as a man, I'd wish for you to take joy in the experience."
Rhayna smiled, "I've every expectation of that. Has it been a long time since you have been with someone?"
"Yes," he said softly laughing to himself, "it's not something that I've come to need in my life, not that I don't welcome it when the occasion presents itself. This is different though, isn't it", he said his face somber with thought. "Our purpose here is more that a little overwhelming."
Rhayna lay back on the couch and watched as he removed boots and belt and then joined her there quickly losing himself to the union of the bond. She opened her mind to him and flooded him with her feeling of trust and need. Qui-Gon responded in kind and the arousal that had been so recently
