16/1 - Regret Qui-Gon silently followed Rhayna to their quarters. He turned to close the door behind him after he’d entered and realized there was no door to close. How had this escaped his notice before? He reprimanded himself again for not being more observant. Rhayna was removing her tunics to use the steam. She sensed Qui-Gon’s frustration again and looked at him curiously. "Qui-Gon, why would a bonded bahar have need of doors?" Rhayna was truly mystified. "We'll not be disturbed unless it's necessary." She just looked at him for a moment, then shrugged and went to the steam. "Well fine, now, she thinks I'm some kind of ascetic." Qui-Gon muttered to himself as he began to remove his tunics and wondered what other misconceptions he could inadvertently create about himself. He thought again about the Jedi on the ship that had fired on them. Was Darii behind the attack or just an observer on the ship? He’d not been able to feel the intent behind the attack. It troubled him, but he put it from his mind. He had other thoughts that could no longer be ignored. He sat to try and meditate while he waited for Rhayna to return from the steam. Rhayna emerged from the steam drying her hair and stood just behind him and watched as he sat motionless. He was calm now and no longer resisting impulses that he had been feeling since they had spared in the cargo hold. Something would have to be done about them and soon. He felt her thoughts and allowed his thoughts to be felt as well. Rhayna knelt behind him and gently released his braid. She kissed his shoulder and said, "First steam, then questions and perhaps answers." Qui-Gon closed his eyes briefly, took a deep breath. He could not remember feeling this aroused since he had been a much younger man . Either he was becoming deeply attracted to this woman or Lohane was getting better with his ministrations. He would have to mention it to him so that he didn’t over do it next time. Something was different about Rhayna too, but he couldn't concentrate enough to put a name to it. He went to the steam and when he returned the cabin lights were dimmed and Rhayna was sitting on the sleep couch softly playing her flute waiting for him. He had never really noticed her before, not that she was not striking but that he had not allowed himself the luxury of just appreciating her appearance. Of course the tunics had made that her appear much as any Nafieri would but with out them she was very distracting in her femaleness. Her hair, longer that his, was a warm shining brown, like the color of long polished herry wood in lamp light. He sat on the edge of the sleep couch and put his face to her hair and inhaled the fragrance of it. He gently ran his fingers lightly down her back. Rhayna put the flute aside. "I have questions but they will have to wait." he said quietly into the hollow of her neck. ****************** Darii stood behind the pilot of the small Trade Federation freighter and regarded him coldly. " I issued no order to fire on them. You were to follow and monitor transmissions only." "Master Darii, we were detected. In order to appear as privateers we had to at lease appear to be interested in their cargo. I do know my business. The firing was regrettable but necessary, I assure you." "Perhaps, but you should not have proceeded without my order. You will do better or you will find other employment. Am I understood? Where are they going?" "They are returning to Naboo, Master Darii." "Do not follow. Set course for Malastare. Contact Chancellor Palptine on a secure channel and inform him of our destination. " "Yes, Master Darii. I will inform my superiors of your dissatisfaction. I will be reprimanded appropriately," the Neimoidian bowed his head as he spoke. "Useless cowards " she thought to her self. It was of no further consequence now, the damage was done. It was time now to determine just what this new information meant. The Nafieri had clearly changed course contrary to the filed plan and what was a second Jedi doing on board? Who was this Nakai? She had not been informed of his presence in this quadrant. Why was Qui-Gon still alive, weak but alive? If the operative that she was informed of had succeeded, then Qui-Gon should be quite dead by now. What had gone wrong? That confounded man would no longer be an obstacle to her progress or a cause of grief to her mother any longer. She would see to it personally if others failed to. Some how he had escaped death on Naboo when she had been assured that it was impossible. The man either was a much better warrior than her mother had admitted to or he was being helped some how. Having no knowledge of him personally she wondered about him. It was clear that the council had great respect for him having put up with his objections and his open disobedience for this long. That was why he had to be taken care of. He could not be duped or mislead. He would speak out on anything he found that disturbed him. A dangerous man indeed as her mother had warned her. Gallia had not been surprised by the information that she had given her concerning Qui-gon's association with suspected dark factions. She did not share the source of her information. There was no need to know where it came from. Although Gallia herself had nothing specifically negative to say about Qui-Gon Jinn, Darii knew that he deeply disturbed her mother for some reason, a reason that she had refused to discuss with her. Council business she supposed. It would not be the first time that her mother had kept Council secrets from her but it no longer mattered. She had her own secrets to keep now. ****************************** Lohane continued to monitor Comm channels after the incident with the supposed privateer. Durgan had gone to rest as had Rhayna and Qui-Gon. He had managed to intercept a message from the freighter and decoded the destination portion but not the content. The new direction of the transport was now Malastare. Just where Xanatos had come from before he arrived on Naboo. Curious that. Why would a freighter bound for Malastare. send a message to someone named Palptine on Coruscant? Durgan might know and Rhayna would have to be informed later. She was beyond caring at the moment. Lohane smiled to himself basking in the success of his applied skills on a certain Jedi's biology. ****************************** Qui-Gon let himself doze in the quietude after he and Rhayna had 'answered' each others questions. Not all, but the more pressing ones at least. He was still confused about how his death was to made convincing to the people that would need to be convinced, but it would wait. He needed to just be for the moment, to experience Rhayna, to just be with her. Suddenly he could sense Lohane's smugness. // Didn't know what you were missing did you? // // I didn't need your help. I would have done fine on my own. // // I wasn't so sure. And you will need my help again shortly or hasn't Rhayna told you yet? // // Told me what? // Rhayna suddenly sat up! // Lohane! Mind yourself! I'll explain it to him! // "What will you explain to me?, Qui-Gon asked as he propped himself up on an elbow and looked at her. "I think it's about time you shared your plan with me as I am directly involved somehow I suppose." "Oh yes, you are involved, to a great degree," she said smiling all too knowingly. "So what must I do? It helps if I know completely in advance what's expected of me," he said sarcastically "It's not that difficult, really," she said matter of factly, "You just have to do what we just did, only a little bit slower." "What?" Qui-Gon said incredulously. "Have you not heard it said that love is alittle like hate," she smiled at him and touched his face. He kissed her fingers. "Life is alittle like death, too. Depends on your point of view. Some cause ripples when they

17/1 Durgan as Nakai had been gone from the main ship for several standard hours now. Lohane had been waiting for his message that would set the next chain of events into motion. Xanatos was still under an imposed sleep and would be awakened when the signal came. Rhayna and Qui-Gon slept peacefully perhaps for the first time in days. There was no further sign of the mystery ship that had attacked them though Lohane kept looking, watching and waiting for Durgan. Durgan had left a very solemn Ki Adi Mundi behind at the Theed Palace. He didn’t have far to walk to his transport and was not even out of sight of the palace when he felt he was being watched. He stopped and reached out to his surroundings and felt no one that would present a threat. That could only mean one thing, there was a monitor droid somewhere tracking his movements. Like the one they had discovered on Tatooine it was just a seeker. It would just record his movements but not do him any harm. But who would be controlling such a device here on Naboo? The ship with the party from Coruscant had already left hours ago. Well, there was one way to find out, he would let the droid follow him to his shuttle, then he would track it back to its owner. He would send the a message to Lohane of Ki Adi’s approval of their plan and tell him he would be delayed while he sought out this newly interested party on Naboo. He walked slowly but deliberately through the streets, being careful to take a different route than he had earlier. He stopped several times, pretending to get his bearings all the while keeping close notice of where the droid was. He even got adventurous enough to test misdirection on it to see if it was susceptible to the technique. It was. That meant it was not Sith technology but more standard surveillance equipment. He took his communicator out and set it to relay through the shuttle. "Lohane, Ki Adi gives his approval. Have you any news of our supposed privateer?" "No sign, they made it very plain that they were headed for Malastare so I doubt that’s where they went but I haven’t been able to track them further." "I’m having a little game of targa right now with someone’s modified probe droid, so I may be a little longer than I’d planned. Is all well on board?" "Yes, we’re ready. We’ll. be waiting for you at the coordinates set. Happy hunting! And Durgan win this time!" "Mrrmmmph, When have I ever lost at targa? End transmission." *************************** // Qui-Gon! // Qui-Gon opened his eyes suddenly out of a sound sleep, instantly alert. It took him a moment to recall where he was. He took a deep breath remembering and feeling Rhayna next to him. // Lohane? // //Durgan has sent word that Ki Adi approves. We’re to go ahead with plans.// Lohane leaned in the door to the cabin waiting permission to enter. Qui-Gon moved carefully so as to not disturb Rhayna and motioned to Lohane to enter as he rolled off the couch and joined Lohane sitting by the door. Lohane had the familiar white cloth that Qui-Gon knew to be the chantuada the Lohane had given him earlier. "Again?" he whispered to Lohane. "Qui-Gon, we can’t afford to not make an ‘impression’ this time. Rhayna has no need but you… well, do you trust yourself that much? This will take a lot of energy." "Forgive me Lohane, but Rhayna and I didn’t really", Qui-Gon hesitated looking some what disconcerted, "clearly discuss what it is I’m to do. Could you be more specific?" Lohane looked slightly startled at this admission. "Oh… I thought she’ d have told you by now." Lohane said looking away for a moment and thinking. "How about if I show you." Qui-Gon just shrugged and nodded his head affirmatively, waiting. "When Nakai returns, first, I have to wake Xanatos. He has to feel your passing in order to believe you’re dead. Remember we’ll not have your body as proof, so the echo of your Force signature must be totally convincing. Then you're to broadcast as strongly as possible. Rhayna will amplify and correct the nature of your signature to produce the desired result." Lohane searched his face for understanding and still saw confusion in his eyes. "Qui-Gon," he said as he put a hand on his shoulder and sent him an image that was unmistakably from Qui-Gon’s own mind. Qui-Gon’s eyes went wide for a moment, "That’s all? I thought it would be more complicated than that." "Rhayna will be handling the complex part. You just need to loose yourself. Give everything completely to the act and broadcast as strongly as you can. Do you understand?" Qui-Gon nodded once and extended his arm for Lohane to apply the liquid to. "What about Obi-Wan? Will I be able to contact him?" Qui-Gon asked. "It’s dangerous, but as long as you’re brief and vague it shouldn’t pose a threat to him or us. When Dur… Nakai arrives, I’ll wake Xanatos and then Rhayna." Lohane then smiled. "Are you ready?" "No, but I will be", Qui-Gon said sincerely. "Afterwards you’ll have to use the roishul around your neck to hide your Force signature and remember you're the Nafieri Jenar." Qui-Gon stood and returned to the couch with Rhayna and took a few moments to clear his mind. He then settled back and waited for Rhayna to wake. It disturbed him greatly to have to do this to Obi-Wan once again but it couldn’t be helped, especially if he were to be able to help him in the future. Obi-Wan was known to have friends and connections outside the temple. It would be easy for him to come into contact with Jenar. But as Qui-Gon it would have been much more difficult if not impossible given the new suspicion that the council had. The docking clamps cycled with a dull thud. The whine of shuttle engines stilled to silence. Durgan ascended the ladder into the main hold of the Nafieri transport. Lohane was waiting for him. "So who won the targa match?" Lohane asked casually. "I did of course!" Durgan replied smiling. "It seems the Jedi have their own spy network deployed on Naboo. But I didn’t know they used it on their own. The droid took me to a laundry, of all places. There was a man there who was decidedly not what he appeared to be. But who he reports to is unclear. All I got was a name that I’m not familiar with but it’s better than nothing. Are things here all right?" "Fine! Qui… Jenar is ready, all I have to do is wake the prisoner for some supper with you there, appropriately grief stricken for your comrades condition, and let Rhayna do the rest." "Jenar? Well, I suppose it’ll do. If he slips and recognized Jinn then Jenar will be close enough. Lohane grabbed his shabba on the way to the aft hold with Nakai following. He quickly braided his hair and settled the shabba on his head, then in a one well practiced motion, tossed the trailing end of the cloth up to cover his face. Lohane bent to touch the head of the prisoner who took some time to rouse himself. He was stiff from the artificial sleep that left him in one position much too long. Nakai folded his arms and looked on gravely with just the smallest hint of suppressed emotion, his saber clearly exposed so that Xanatos could not mistake him for anything but a Jedi. Lohane brought his food and placed it on the floor close to the prisoner as had been done in the past, then backed away and sat on his heels to watch him eat. Xanatos looked at Lohane with clear contempt as he stretched and then began eat. "He’s not dead yet. I can still feel him", he said between mouthfuls as he gave a sidelong look at Nakai who remained silent. "So what do you think they’ll do with me? Hmmm something ‘ethical’ I suppose. They’re nothing if ethical, you know. I didn’t catch your name. Have we met before?" Xanatos asked sarcastically as he tossed a food cube into his mouth. "I didn’t give it and no we haven’t" Nakai said coldly. "You know Qui-Gon Jinn then, that would explain the morose manner of yours. Well, I know Qui-Gon too, quite well

19 - Circles The two Nafieri traders went into the purser's suite. "My name is Naf Lohane. I wish to settle an account for the transport of Master Kir-Den Nakai and arrange for his transport costs to Kylize." The clerk bowed and went to retrieve the proper information. Lohane looked back over his shoulder to Qui-Gon who was overly alert given that he should have been standing at ease for this part of the mission. // Relax, this is the easy part. // // Easy for you, I’m still getting used to being Nafieri. Have them call Obi-Wan. I want to know if he's been summoned to the council for the announcement of my demise or if they don’t trust him to even to know the details of that! // Lohane turned back to the clerk as he returned and asked, "Master Nakai has purchased merchandise for an Obi-Wan Kenobi. Will he take delivery now?" "I will send a message to Knight Kenobi. If you would follow me." Lohane inclined his head in agreement. "Please wait here for Knight Kenobi's response and the transport documents to be drawn up." They entered a small room off a corridor to the left. It was windowless and bare with simple furniture consisting of benches of various widths along the walls and a low table in the center. The clerk bowed and left them. They both sat down to wait, Qui-Gon wishing to be just about anywhere in the temple but here. Qui-Gon followed Lohane's lead and didn't uncover his face. They didn’t have long to wait. The clerk returned with comp pads and Obi-Wan's response. "Knight Kenobi will be here shortly. Your documents are ready. You may review them and acknowledge. Please use the facilities to refresh yourselves." He bowed again and left them. "So what will you say to him" Lohane asked casually as he got up to help himself to some water. Qui-Gon just held up his hand for silence as he scanned for surveillance devices. He had had many meetings in rooms like these and knew well how to conceal listening devices. Lohane just stood sipping his water under his veil as he watched him continue to scan the room. Qui-Gon reached up under the cabinet of the service console and removed a small listening device and held it out for Lohane to see. "Yes, I deactivated when we entered. You didn't feel me do it? I must be getting better at this," Lohane chuckled. "My attention was else where," Qui-Gon replied shortly. "It shouldn't have been." Lohane returned just as shortly. Then shaking his head, " Rhayna was right, you do have to tell him so you can concentrate on the business at hand." ************* Obi-Wan Kenobi was not in his quarters. He was watching the procession of Knights with their prisoner make their way to the council chambers. Anakin at his side was as usual full of questions. "Master, what's happening?" "They've captured a criminal who was once a Jedi, Anakin. He is being brought before the council for justice." "Why isn't he a Jedi anymore?" "He failed his trials and then became seduced by the dark side. He broke the code and caused much pain to the innocent. He is responsible for Qui-Gon's death, Anakin." Obi-Wan replied sadly. Anakin now looked at the man coldly as he passed. He wanted to strike him, to hurt him somehow. Obi-Wan knelt down next to him feeling his rage and anger. "No Anakin, that will serve nothing. He must be stopped so that he won't hurt anyone again but not out of anger or revenge. You must never strike out for those reasons or you will become what you direct your anger at. Do you understand?" "I think so... but I don't like him." Anakin said tentatively. "Anakin, you must look at him as neither good nor bad, but just a man. This is very hard to do but it's very important. You must acknowledge your feelings, examine why you have them and then let them go." Obi-Wan paused and looked hard at the boy to see if he was comprehending any of this. This had been one of his own hardest lessons to learn and he feared he was still learning it. Obi-Wan stood and watched again. He had is own questions that needed asking too. Why had he not been summoned to the chamber to here the account of Qui-Gon’s last hours. He certainly should have been or thought he should have been but that apparently was not how the council saw it. Obi-Wan had never seen Nakai before. The master looked somewhat out of place in the temple. His robes were old and worn. It was obvious that he spent a great deal of time away from the temple doing his research. Obi-Wan was slightly startled when Nakai looked right at him and nodded as if he knew who he was. He noticed the blood on Nakai’s tunic and wondered if it was Qui-Gon’s. He didn’t feel that it was but couldn’t be sure. He would speak with him after the council session. Just then his communicator sounded. "Kenobi" "Knight Kenobi, Master Nakai has purchased goods for you from some Nafieri. They would like to know if you will take delivery now?" "Are these the Nafieri that transported Master Nakai?" "Yes, the Nafieri are in Salon 8. Shall I tell them you're coming?" Obi-Wan reached out to sense who was in Salon 8. He could feel nothing. He then reached out to Nakai. Nakai felt him and replied. // Go, they have crystals that Qui-Gon selected for you, bring Anakin. // "Yes, tell them to wait. I'll be there as soon as I can." Obi-Wan replaced his communicator. Obi-Wan was confused for a moment but remembered that he was to watch for Nakai and this was almost an order. Nakai must have spoken to Qui-Gon concerning him. How else would he have known of Anakin. But crystals, what would he want with... of course he would be building another saber and Anakin must start his soon as well. "Come Anakin. There are some traders waiting for us." *************** The great doors opened to the council chamber and Master Nakai entered followed by Xanatos his guards. The chamber was resonating with tension as the meeting had been hastily called. The council members were present, some not seated as yet. Several other Masters and Knights were still finding places from which to view the proceedings. Nakai did a quick scan to see just who stood where. Although they may mean nothing, sometimes those positions could indicate just who one was allied with. Gallia had a tall female knight standing rather close behind her looking very serene in the midst of the otherwise orderly tension of the room. It took but a moment before he recognized her. She had been on the ship that had attacked them. This was the Darii that Ki-Adi had spoken of, Qui-Gon and Gallia's daughter. Qui-Gon had said he did not know this Darii who was also the newly appointed liaison to the Chancellor. She would bear careful watching. Others seemed to be randomly placed and focusing on Masters Yoda and Windu. Nakai bowed to the Council and placed the bag that contained Qui-Gon’s personal effects on the floor in front of Yoda. He then removed Qui-Gon's lightsaber and set it at Yoda’s feet. He took out a bundle and carefully unwrapped the black quarrels, placing them next to the saber. He bowed once again and then stepped back. Yoda looked sadly down at the saber and then to Xanatos. "Nothing have you to say? Feel you anything for Qui-Gon who cared for you?" Yoda asked calmly. Xanatos paused and looked around the room slowly, gauging if any response could have been appropriate. He saw nothing but calm, no regret, no remorse, and no revenge. It was as if Qui-Gon had never existed for them. It wasn’t what he expected. He had wanted to see their pain and feel their anger for what he had done to Qui-Gon. That he could have reveled in but this void of calm, there was nothing for him to fight here. He looked down at the saber and thought about Qui-Gon again. These were Qui-Gon's peers, his leaders, his teacher and yet they didn’t seem to care. Qui-Gon had cared about them, might have even cared about him, that much he was sure o
