21/3 Durgan acknowledged Lohane's message as he sat at his console and immediately commed Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan and Anakin had been laying out the basic design for Anakin's new saber and fitting the new blue stone into a casing for Obi-Wans new saber when the Comm chirped. "Master Nakai how can I be of service?" Obi-wan answered recognizing Nakai. "Knight Kenobi, I was wondering if you would be interested in helping me with some of my research complilations. It seems I have been too long in the field and my skills with the temple archives are not what they once were." "Certainly I would be honored to help. When would be a good time?" "If it would be convenient, now would be quite helpful as I am at an impass." Obi-Wan hesitated for a moment thinking of Anakin. Should he take him or leave him alone in their quarters to work on the saber. It would be quite safe here and Anakin was quite absorbed in what he was doing. He would contact Ki-Adi and see if he could arrange somehow to look in on him while he helped Nakai. "Ah yes, Master Nakai, I will attend as soon as I can." Obi-Wan sent a message to Ki-Adi informing him of his intentions and Ki agreed to look in on Anakin as he worked. Obi-Wan grabbed his new saber and absent mindedly clipped to his belt, slipping into his robe, he ruffled Anakin's hair and told him he would not be long and then made for Nakai quarters. He arrived shortly taking a route that was less than direct but not too costly time wise and kept his senses extended for anyone following him. He palmed the key pad to Nakai's quarters and waited. Durgan opened the door and welcomed him in. "So what do you need?" Obi-Wan asked. "Jennar had told me that a prisoner is being moved to safer quarters than the infirmary." Durgan carefully spoke indicating possible surveillance within his quarters by glancing around. "I was wondering if you might be able to suggest just where in the temple would be 'safer' than the infirmary or perhaps why such steps were being taken," Durgan asked as tilting his head and then he added, "Your former master had great faith in your abilities," he then added under his breath, "and your discretion in using them." Obi-Wan slowly, smiled and took the seat at the console and began his search diligently. The two became deeply engulfed in poring over log reports and dispatches when Obi-Wan's Comm unit beeped. It was Ki-Adi. "Obi-Wan, I have been called to an emergency council meeting. I am leaving Padawan Jerul with young Anakin. I will speak with you later." "Thank you Knight Mundi. I will contact you at your earliest convience." "Emergency council meeting? Does that happen often?" Nakai asked. "I wouldn't know as Qui-Gon was not on the council but Ki Adi did not have to tell me of this, so I imagine that this is extraordinary and my have something to do with recent events. I've found something. It looks like it could be related to the movement of our prisoner. It's a requisition for field generators for the Cloisters." "Cloisters! Are they still used? I thought they'd been abandoned long ago." Nakai said as furrowed his brows. "And they were but there have been a few Jedi who have been over taxed in one way or another and find it necessary to retreat from public life. The Cloisters were reactivated for this purpose but they never needed field generators before! Not unless they were going to house a less than receptive guest," Obi-Wan said as the corner of mouth quirked up in a mischievous grin. "Xanatos. They're expecting someone to try and get to him so they are not putting him in holding but moving him somewhere else. Somewhere that only insiders would know about. So they expect the attack to come from outside. Jennar and Lohane have returned. They have news of Darii. Were you able to find anything on her?" Nakai asked. "Very little that would not already be common knowledge. Her master was a Dekar Sul, a Coreillian. Her padawan is an average performer, she does little to distinguish her self. They have had their share of success and defeats diplomatically in the last few cycles. Nothing really out of the ordinary." Obi-Wan shrugged. "The diplomatic failures, do they have anything in common? Contacts, circumstances, locations anything at all. Check the same with there successes." Nakai commanded. Obi-Wan set to the task while Nakai searched old temple floorplans for a layout of the recently activated Cloisters. They were at the oldest part of the temple, located deep within the core. ********************** Gallia stood stiffly in front of the seven council members that had responded to her call. She studied them carefully knowing that they could feel how upset she was. She made no attempt to hide her feelings from them which she could easily have done and had done in the past. But she wanted them to know she held herself partially responsible for the actions of her daughter. She also let them feel her remorse for her misjudgment of Qui-Gon Jinn's loyalty. She had let herself be used by Val-sash Darii to generate doubt concerning Qui-Gon's motives where none existed and it may have cost him his life. "I have called you here to notify you that Knight Darii who was so recently appointed liaison to the Chancellery has been leaking information privy to this council, to outside sources that may or may not be connected to the Chancellery. She by no means had cause or permission to do this. I fear the lives of several Jedi may have been compromised by her actions. I have no specific proof as yet but my agents are tracking promising leads as we speak. As you already know they have uncovered a plot to remove our recently acquired prisoner, Xanatos. "Where is Knight Darii now?" Windu asked coldly. "She left my quarters and went to the Malastarian embassy and was last traced to her own quarters." Gaillia replied. "I offer myself for discipline regarding my actions and will submit to the judgement of the council." She bowed deeply to the members present and with her eyes yet cast down she returned to her seat and folded her hands into the sleeves of her robe, awaiting their decision. "If Knight Darii knows that she is indeed under suspicion herself, there is little that we can effectively do now but let things in motion play out. We must watch and guard carefully and perhaps use this opportunity to uncover her motives as well as those of the Chancellery. I recommend that we let things remain as they are and be vigilant" Ki Adi said softly. "Steps have been taken to insure the safety of our prisoner and to attempt a capture of those that would attempt to harm or free him." Windu added. "What steps have been taken?" Yoda asked. "We have done as Gallia suggested and moved the prisoner to a more secure location in the oldest part of the temple," Windu replied. Gallia's head shot up is shock. "From whom did you receive this order from? I made no such arrangement!" There was an echoing silence in the chamber at Gallia's pronouncement. ...tbc [This message has been edited by Rhui Chatar (edited 02-04-2000).]

22/1 Darii forced herself not to hurry to her quarters even though she knew time was short. She had received her instructions but didn't agree with them although she would never reveal her true feelings concerning them. She would adapt them to a purpose of her own. After seeing the broken Jedi with a weapon he hadn't earned she decided she had waited long enough for what should have been hers by right. She was a full Knight of the Order, not the cast out failure of some idealistic relic of a Master. She made arrangements to reserve a private practice hall for 2 hours and listed herself and an old aquaintance who was back at the temple for a short stay between assignments as sparring partners. "Saura Lun, go to practice hall twelve and wait for Knight Varian. I have an errand to attend to first and will be late." The padawan bowed and immediately set off. Darii then sat before her comm console and began meticulously logging into others systems one by one until she reach Gallia's system. She then changed the orders to move Xanatos to a high security holding area. She changed into darker tunics under her robe and began to make her way down to lower parts of the temple with the pretense of having a sparring session planned with an old friend as was logged in the temple system. ********************* Nakai had a good working knowledge of the old floorplan now. He sent to Qui-Gon the news that Xanatos was possibly in danger from some outside source and had been moved possibly to the Cloisters. // Any news concerning Darii?// // Obi-Wan can find nothing unusual about her movements or missions which in itself is unusual given her quick rise in rank and the Chancellery position.// //What about right now? Where is she right now?// "Obi-Wan can you locate Knight Darii in the temple?" Nakai asked suddenly without looking up from the floorplans he had been studying. Obi-Wan turned and looked at Nakai puzzled at the sudden change in train of thought but then went and carried out the search. "Knight Darii has reserved a practice hall for eighth hour which begins 2 hours from now." ******************** "I'm here to take custody of the detainee on the Council's authority. Here is the order from Council Member Gallia." Darii placed the data reader into the hands of the knight standing guard of the isolation unit that contained a restrained and cynically smiling Xanatos. The knight bowed to Darii after reading the order and released the security locks on the unit and opened the door motioning for Xanatos to approach. Darii waiting calmly for the prisoner to exit the room that had been his confinement. "So, what have the powers that be decided to do with me? Rehabilitation is out of the question so it must be off to the practice rings then!" "You are being moved for your own safety, nothing more," Darii said flatly. They made to leave and the knight that had been guarding the door started to follow. "That won't be necessary Knight Deghar, I will see the detainee to his new quarters and Knight Veillare will be taking up guard duties. You are relieved. Thank you for your service." Darii said as she bowed to him. Xanatos just stood there looking very bored by the formalities. Deghar did not let his curiosity show but he felt it none the less. It was not customary for someone of Darii's authority to personally move a detainee. He returned her bow and turned to go back to his quarters. Darii watched him go and then motion to Xanatos to proceed down the corridor. "What took you so long?" Xanatos asked sarcastically as they walked. "I had to get new orders. I was not informed of your 'mission' so I couldn't plan accordingly for you failure." "What failure? Jinn's dead. That was my mission," Xanatos replied with a hint of regret in his voice. His mission had been all too easy. He had wanted to really test himself against Qui-Gon Jinn but his superiors did not have that much confidence in his abilities. Especially in light of a more apt opponent recently falling to a mere padawan. "And I suppose getting caught was with that saber was part of mission too! You're a bigger fool that I thought. Why wasn't I informed?" "Perhaps you didn't need to be. Everything is on a need to know basis. Certainly you should be used to that by now, working for the council as long as you have. Where are we going?" "The Cloisters. You wait there until the recovery team arrives." Darii responded distractedly. She had no intention allowing the recovery to be a success. That saber should have been hers and she would see that it came to her one way or another. "How long? When do I get these manacles off. " Darii didn't answer him. They had reached a part of the temple that was seldom used and lit dimly by motion detecting fixtures. The Cloisters had been the core of the original temple and at one time used by scholars of the Order that closed themselves off from the secular activities of the rest of the Order. At one time there had been no easy access in or out of the complex but having fallen to many other uses over the years that had changed. There were several access points that were used by more discreet members of the Order that needed to move in and out of the temple unseen. The walls were stone and some of the oldest known on Coruscant. They arrived at the newly activated cell and stopped. Darii inspected the the newly installed force fields and life support systems. "Get in there. You will wait here until I get word that it is safe to release you. Your escape must seem to be orchestrated by factions known to have grievances with the Jedi. That will be the job of the recovery team that I will be guiding." She turned and stalked off down the corridor the lights flickering off behind her as she went. *************************** Jennar was a very nervous looking Nafieri and by being such was making Lohane nervous as well. Qui-Gon was not given to openly displaying his feelings even when it was appropriate to do so. To see him this disturbed was unusual and Lohane didn't like. // Qui-Gon, what is it? Nakai has things in hand. It's not like anything is wrong. // // That's just the problem. Something is wrong and I don't know what it is. Where is Rhayna? Why isn't she telling me where she is? // // She's just doing cover stuff. We do have accounts to maintain in order to 'be' who we seem, you know. I'm sure she doesn' t want to distract you with menial things.// // And what about your vision? Is that menial, also? // Lohane just scowled. They were walking purposefully but not too quickly to a lift that would take them to the lower levels that would lead them to the Old Temple. Nakai had relayed what Obi-Wan had found regarding Xanatos' change in location. It bothered Qui-Gon although he could not say why. Nakai and Obi-Wan were also on the move. They had seen enough in the logs to justify a recognizance of the old Cloisters just to see if their suspicions were correct. Using Nakai's floorplans they were making their way slowly down in the bowels of the temple and avoiding the more trafficked areas. Qui-Gon was going from memory. His padawan days had been long ago by his standard but by the longevity of other species had just happened a short time ago and he knew that tunnels that had allowed his discreet departures and returns to the temple would most likely still be accessible. He just hoped that Obi-Wan's hunch was wrong and that nothing was really going on but standard maintainance. *********************** Windu called up the logs that would show the orders that had been issued concerning Xanatos of the last 10 hours. There was an entry, made by Gallia indicating that the detainee Xanatos be moved to more secure accomodations in the Purser's wing of the temple on level 23, 5th hour. "I never gave that order." Gallia said

Rhayna walked casually from the Alderaan Embassy. She had suceeded in her task but for some reason did not feel satisfied with the result. She a sense of foreboding but couldn't tell if it had to do with the arrangements she had just made with former chancellor Finis Vallorum or if it was concerning other issues. She didn't have time at present to investigate things further. Vallorum had given her information concerning certain parties that had been hired rather quickly for some local purpose that he could not obtain information about. That usually meant having something to do with the new chancellor. Palpatine had been very thorough in severing all of his old contacts and the new ones were never completely informed concerning the source of their orders. She had contacted Durgan to get an update on his findings in the temple and learned that Qui-Gon and Lohane were attemptling to gain access into the older parts of the temple to determine if the changes there did indeed contain the prisoner that the Nafieri had just turned over to the Jedi. She was going to inform Qui-Gon of her latest accomplishment with Vallorum but sensing that he was preoccupied with something thought it best not to disturb him and to go to him directly. She set out to follow Qui-Gon and Lohane's progress as they made their way into the bowels of the old temple far underground. The sense of foreboding increased as she got closer to the temple. She had no sense of what the focal point my be so she contacted Lohane to see if all was well. // Lohane, is Qui-Gon well? He seems distracted. // // Well enough. He is trying to remember the ways into the temple from his youth. He is just concentrating. I have shared a vision that I had with him. He seems disturbed by it but has told me nothing. // // Qui-Gon, I am coming to join you and Lohane. Keep searching, I can follow your path.// Rhayna stepped up her pace as she crossed the atrium that would take her to the under ground lifts. ****************************** Xanatos sat calmly in his newly decorated confinement. He had been troubled at first when Darii had activated the force fields behind him. As he had entered the cell he now understood that she could no longer be trusted. He'd sensed that much. At least it had bought him some time before he had to deal with the Jedi directly. Perhaps enough time to make good an escape. Qui-Gon too continued to be in his thoughts although he tried to banish him repeatedly. Why did he care how the man had died? He had no love for the man and it was in the past. He should no longer be of concern to him but his feelings forced Xanaos to believe otherwise. What he had truly wanted was to best his old Master in combat, not assasinate him out of hand. He hated himself for it, that he still wanted Qui-Gon's approval after all that had happened. If only he could have confronted him, defeated him, shown him he could have been a Jedi if he had truly wanted it, that was what he had wanted. He wanted Qui-Gon to know that before he died. As it was his accomplishment left him empty and incomplete somehow, a feeling that he had wanted to rid himself of by doing the bidding of his new Master but his capture had robbed him of that. His new Master would except no mistakes. This lead him to wonder if a rescue was indeed coming as Darii had lead him to believe. He could feel several parties moving but could not tell if they were friend or foe but he would be ready for either should a chance of escape present itself. ***************************** Moving along the darkened corridor Darii hurried to the arranged rondevous point where she would meet the group that was being sent to get Xanatos out of the temple. She could already hear the footsteps of someone coming in the distance. She was surprised they had found their way this far in without her to guide them. She must be seen as defending the temple's detainee so as not to disclose where her real loyalty lay. She would justify her actions by stating that she discovered that temple communications had been breached and had gone to confront Xanatos's resuers alone as she did not dare risk summoning help without alerting the oncoming intruders. At least that was the plan until she came face to face with Kir-Den Nakai followed by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Nakai let her speak first. He offered no explaination as to why he was here and signalled Obi-Wan to do the same. The two stood calmly alert waiting for Darii to make the first move. "You have felt them too then?" she asked with her saber hilt in her hand but not as yet activated. "I sensed they would come for him, so he was moved by Gallia's order. He is safely contained now. No one outside the temple knows of these corridors." Nakai still held his silence out in front of him as plainly as he would have his saber and just nodded. Obi-Wan was bursting with questions knowing that what Darii had just said made little sense but he followed Nakai's lead and remained silent as well. " He is in a reconditioned cell not far from here. Have you been sent to guard him?" Darii turned as the sounds coming from another corridor grew louder. Blaster fire and not that far off. Nakai drew his saber hilt and said, "Yes, we've have been sent to keep watch. Show use where his cell is." Darii nodded and turned, "We will have little help defending him. Communications have been compromised. Help will not reach us in time." ***************************** Qui-Gon could sense someone in down the corridor long before he could see them. He went for his absent lightsaber and quietly cursed. "Your blaster will serve you better at a distance," Lohane smiled at him and drew his blaster. "I don't think they're Jedi Qui-Gon, and neither are you any longer." Lohane added as he doused their light. Qui-Gon scowled at Lohane's observation although he knew Lohane couldn' t see him. They both took up positions in the shadows behind columns and waited to the see who would emerge from the corridor they had just exited. Qui-Gon reluctantly drew his blaster and prepared to meet with who ever was noisly coming down the corridor. There were two of them. They seemed rather bold considering where they were and very sloppy in the tactics. They were obviously expecting someone to meet them. But not Nafieri. The exchange was over quickly. One lay still and the other had fled out a different route. Qui-Gon was going to pursue as he knew the assailant was headed in Rhayna's direction but Rhayna stopped him. Rhayna reached an entrance where one of her contacts had been waiting. He informed her that there were possibly 2 parties that were attempting to gain entrance to the old temple. Both had passed them before Qui-gon and Lohane had gone in. Rhayna nodded gravely and alerted Qui-Gon at once. // Qui-Gon, Nakai, there are two separate teams working working toward Xanatos location. Be wary. I am coming from the east.// //Lohane and I have met with the two from the west. One will trouble us no more but the second has fled and is heading in your direction,// Qui-Gon replied. All she got from Durgan was a silent acknowledgement which meant he was otherwise engaged. // I will be fine Qui-Gon, go with Lohane, get to Durgan something is wrong.// ....more coming.....
