Darn... as Obi-Wan's investigating the strange feeling in his back your description caused myback to twinge in sympathy. I laughed at Obi-Wan mentally calling his Master an idiot... in this respect he is right!!
Come on Kelik, I know you can be civil to Obi-Wan!!
Excellent post Jemmy!!

So, who's for Kelik landing Obi-Wan a smack on his jaw?
Just joking...I think!
BTW, as today is my day off I thought I'd maybe draw everyone's attention to the fact I have actually posted on Tomorrow Can Wait!

RE: The Lion Sleeps Tonight (JA): 2nd anniversary 15th Feb
WEEK FOUR, DAY THREE, HOUR TWO:
***************
"Toms," Olrin squinted down at their newest companion, "why did Padawan Kenobi give you a dog?"
The creature in question stood obediently beside Toms, tail swishing quite happily to and fro. In its mouth, half-covered with big trails of cannoid drool, lay and old and somewhat past its best jedi boot. It was an ugly looking creature but Toms had never been one to judge on appearances, and reluctantly conceded that the cannoid improved on better acquaintance. Even if he did smell rather funny…
"I dunno." Toms held Zebedee's rope leash loosely in his grasp. "He said that it was an emergency and that Jemmy would be eternally grateful if I babysat her pet for an hour or so, and that he'd come back and collect it in due course."
Olrin couldn't help but smile at that. Corellians were notoriously biased towards those others from their planet, and Jemmy was no exception. Far from it, as Olrin had noticed. Even although Toms was a mere child - younger even than himself - it would appear that his friend had developed what in loose terms non-jedi might call a crush'. Although he doubted the boy would see it that way.
"You like her, don't you?" Olrin smiled brightly at Toms, nudging him in the side insinuatingly.
"Course I do!"
"No…I mean REALLY like her!" The gardener's smile became even wider than before. "You have a thing about her, hmmm?"
Toms blinked, at first uncomprehending exactly what Olrin was trying to get at. Certainly he liked Jemmy! She was a friend…a big sister who always looked out for him and made sure that he was okay. Whenever he'd had a bad day she would listen to him and maybe even offer helpful advice. He'd been really sorry when she'd gotten sick and poor baby Candyfloss-Cupcake-Treacle-Takkini-Chip had died. It seemed a rotten thing to have happen to you! And she'd been so sad for a long while afterwards…hang on! What exactly was Olrin saying???
"I do NOT have a thing about her!" The Corellian boy bristled indignantly as they strolled around the gardens, Zebedee loping obediently by their side. "Our relationship is strictly catatonic! She's a friend!"
"Why are you blushing then?" Teased Olrin, watching Toms' face change from its usual healthy golden colour to a definite splotchy red. It felt good to get outside and breathe the fresh air! The only problem with walking around the gardens was that he expected at any moment to run into his master, digging in the rose beds or planting up some new close-growing shrub. It felt so odd that he wasn't there anymore! Whilst Olrin had maybe gotten over his initial shock at his masters death, the gardens seemed so empty without him that it made his heart ache to think on it too long. He needed to relax and get out for a bit. Maybe that was why he was enjoying his time with Toms, even although he wasn't sure his late master would have relished the idea of having an overgrown cannoid tearing up his lawn!
"I'M NOT BLUSHING!" Toms growled back. "It's sunstroke!"
"You've got a crush, why don't you admit it?" Smiled Olrin, picking up a branch from the lawn that had fallen off one of the nearby trees.
"I don't want to crush Jemmy!" Protested Toms. "She's waaaay too old! Besides Obi-Wan would murder me! I don't go for old women! That would be like kissing my master or Yaddle or something…yeuch!" Toms made a show of wiping his mouth on his sleeve as if something had left a very bad taste in his mouth.
"Jemmy's not old. She's only 17."
"That's old." Toms shrugged indifferently.
"That's not what you said the last time! You said," Olrin was quick to remind him, "that you liked older women and not silly girls like Isadora!"
Toms was beginning to wonder why he was even walking with Olrin if all he was going to get was constant teasing in return. He was half-tempted to remind Olrin of his special friendship with Alanni and see if that wiped the smug smile off his face, but a true Jedi wouldn't stoop so low, and ever since he had returned to Coruscant he was determined to become the best padawan that he could, so that Master Windu would think he was worthy of the special sabre tutoring he'd been promised. Also, he couldn't pick on Olrin…his master had just died, and it wouldn't be a nice thing at all!
No, he'd just have to endure it as best he could.
"I don't want to discuss my private life any further." He sniffed, attempting to sound mature. "From now on I'm gonna be a good guy like Master Windu! Maybe with a bit of sabre training I might even…hey!"
The Corellian stopped short; the words torn from his mouth (and his arm nearly from its socket) as the dog unexpectedly pricked up his ears and bolted towards the fountains. As Toms made a final, desperate lunge for the rope he felt the friction of the coarse material burn the skin of his hands, almost making him drop the leash with pain.
"Owch!" The Corellian boy yelped, disgusted. "Rin, help me! He's gonna break loose!"
Even whilst Olrin raced to help him the dog on the other end of the rope strained against its rope collar for a second, dragging the combined weight of the two young children along on the grass as if they were water skiing. Olrin wondered bleakly if their feet would leave big ruts or scorch marks in the lawn…he felt Toms make a final desperate lunge to control the rope with the force -
And then both the dog and the rope had gone.
"Rats!" Toms growled, holding one afflicted hand with the other, watching as Zebedee tore across the lawn and out of sight. "How do we get him back now?"
"Maybe we should tell Master Windu?" Olrin shrugged uncertainly. "He'd help us."
"But it's Jemmy's dog - and I'm sure the council wouldn't like it if they found out that he'd gotten loose."
"What if he bites someone?" Olrin replied. "Maybe a crèche child? Or accidentally hurts somebody? We are going to get in so much trouble! Our friendship with Master Windu wouldn't be much help to us then!"
Toms' eyes grew big and round. He'd worked so hard at being good! He knew he had it in himself to be a real, sensible jedi…okay, he'd have to be extra careful to keep his jokiness under wraps but so far he'd managed it alright - mainly for Olrin's sake. When your master had just joined the force it didn't seem appropriate to do a lot of laughing, even although his friend did seem relatively calm. But the thought of losing Master Windu's new found respect was absolutely horrific! And then of course there was Jemmy…
"Rin…help!" He gulped. "What's Jemmy gonna say when I tell her I'm responsible for losing her pet cannoid?
Olrin winked at him, trying to beckon the youngster to follow him in the direction that Zebedee had fled.
"She's going to say Toms: you're dumped!"
Well, Olrin thought as he took off like a hungry Gundark, feet kicking up invisible dust; at least THAT remark had got Toms to follow him! As the two boys raced across the lawn one after the other, it was left to Olrin to hope that maybe they might still find the wretched creature before he inflicted too much damage…
***********
As the aircab closed in on the temple launch-and-landing pad, Obi-Wan found himself holding his breath ever so slightly, wondering what sight would await him once the doors to the vehicle opened. His master wouldn't thank him for worrying even although he might appreciate the concern behind it, but the padawan was finding it difficult to rid himself of the nagging feeling that this time might well have been one escapade too far for Qui-Gon Jinn…
//It's not like he's old…I mean, really old. Besides, he has the force to help slow down the ageing process. Even so, I suppose you don't heal quite as well in your fifties as you do when you are a teenager, for example…// Obi-Wan watched as the repulsars slowly switched themselves off, allowing the vehicle to make contact with the surface of the pad. //I just wish he would take a little more care! Rich I know coming from 'Mr Infirmary', but still I hate to see the way he throws himself into situations regardless…//
That was Qui-Gon, of course. And despite what he had just been thinking Obi-Wan knew the man always weighed up the risks calmly and sensibly before undertaking anything, which was why he was left wondering what had happened to his master this time to render his injury that more serious. Had he stumbled and fallen? Surely not! Perhaps it had just flared up?
Sure enough when Qui-Gon attempted to extricate himself from the aircab in alarmingly slow fashion, An-Paj stepped up to help him, looking attentive and concerned without overdoing things. There were no lectures or reprimands which Obi-Wan had though might well be on the cards, only an emotional and literal shoulder to lean on! Again the padawan was left to marvel at the way the healer instinctively knew which tone to take with his patients depending on the situation. And whilst An-Paj tried to give Qui-Gon an on-the-spot assessment, another figure went round to the cab driver to pay him the fare…
Kelik Mathers.
He should have known that not even Kelik would allow Qui-Gon back to the temple unaccompanied, but Obi-Wan almost wished that he had. Such a wish was selfish and he knew it to be so, especially when a meeting with Jemmy's uncle was a forgone conclusion at some stage or other, but Obi-Wan was not ashamed to admit dreading a reunion with the man in light of recent incidents. If Kelik wanted to turn things into a drama, what then? He would have to bite his tongue good and proper lest he say something that Qui-Gon might find unforgivable, and at that moment in time Qui-Gon was his main concern. Still, it annoyed him greatly to think that if Kelik wanted to pick a fight he would be powerless to defend himself…
//Let's just see what the man has to say before we condemn him out of hand, shall we?// Obi-Wan reminded himself sternly, shooting his master a sympathetic look as An-Paj slowly helped him out of the cab. //It might not be that bad…//
"Master." Obi-Wan hurried over to be in ready attendance should he be required, yet not close enough to be considered in the way. "How did it happen?"
Qui-Gon closed his eyes in defeat. "I leaned over a table and felt it just go. I think its been leading up to this moment for some time now."
"You cancelled your surgery." An-Paj said neutrally. "It's not going to get better with physiotherapy and the force, not this time. You know this to be true."
"Yes." Qui-Gon answered tersely out the side of his mouth.
"Good. Then I shall make immediate arrangements to have you admitted in the surgery. All things being well we should be able to operate on you this evening." An-Paj saw Qui-Gon's lips curl in distaste - or was that pain? "Some things cannot be fixed without help, Qui-Gon. This," he pointed at the master's back, "is one of them. Perhaps your padawan and your guest would like to accompany you…"
Obi-Wan's eyes went immediately to the figure of Kelik Mathers and found the tall man staring dispassionately back at him. Bowing slightly, more as a product of Qui-Gon's good training than any real courtesy he might be feeling at that time, Obi-Wan wondered exactly how Jemmiah would take the news that both her uncle and her guardian were in the infirmary at the same time - and one of them as a fellow patient!
"Padawan Kenobi." Kelik acknowledged the gesture in dull monotone.
Feeling Qui-Gon's gaze fall upon him, Obi-Wan turned his attention back to his poor, half-crippled master. How the mighty had fallen, the padawan thought mournfully, taking in the slouched over appearance of the famed warrior-master. It was a sad sight to see, but no doubt An-Paj would soon put him to rights, even if they had to glue him back together again…
"Will he be okay?" A concerned Obi-Wan found himself asking the master healer.
"Don't worry about him. Once he's been treated, and with a little rest and relaxation he should be fine. Of course he'll need some nursing to start with but as he gets stronger he'll be able to manage more."
"There's no need to speak of me as if I'm not here!" Qui-Gon replied sullenly.
"As long," An-Paj added cautiously, "as he doesn't strain his back or meet with any further accidents…"
A large, blur-like shape bolted across the landing pad so fast that Obi-Wan could hardly make out what it was: somewhat akin to a hairy rocket trailing a long thin rope in its wake. He watched briefly as the rocket homed in straight on himself and instinctively tensed his muscles for impact…until it changed direction at the last moment and swerved to intercept Qui-Gon instead! Force, Obi-Wan gasped as the familiar looking creature stood on its back legs and tried to knock the master off his feet, he didn't think anything could move so fast! Where had Toms disappeared? Why had he let Zebedee go?
The dog, thinking that Qui-Gon was bent double to welcome him over, collided joyously with the jedi, and if Obi-Wan couldn't exactly see sparks from the clash he could certainly make out the tortured yelps of pain as his master tried to fend the animal off…
An-Paj looked on, shaking his head.
"Only you, Qui-Gon," he sighed, "only you…"

OPUCH! I actually winced myself at Zebedee jumping up on a bent over Qui-Gon. And you know for the tall master it all happened in slow motion and he could do nothing to stop it.
I know a bit about an aching back myself, but for me it's just going to get worse. At least until September...

It's amusing how Rin teased his friend, yet Toms deteremined not to tease back!!
Of course An-Paj knows the tone to set for his patients... that's why he's the Master Healer! Plus his wonderful little quips!!
Oh my!!! That's where Zebedee took off to??? That man needs some extra comfort me thinks... poor Qui-Gon!!!

RE: The Lion Sleeps Tonight (JA): 2nd anniversary 15th Feb
WEEK FOUR, DAY THREE, HOUR TWO:
******************
She had to admit it; the possibility of having a jedi on the premises was intriguing to say the least.
Geri Pippage, otherwise known as Spider, made a quick study of the two figures who'd arrived on her doorstep right out of the blue. The tall felineoid she'd recognised instantly as Obi-Wan's friend Tanni. She'd met him at least three times before, the most auspicious occasion being last year's cantina crawl where, it had seemed, everything that could go wrong HAD gone wrong. It was difficult not to like the Togorian; he had a to-the-point yet pleasant manner that reminded her of…well, herself!
The second figure she hadn't ever set eyes on before: a girl of about fourteen or fifteen years of age, a little on the plain side perhaps and dressed in Jedi robes clearly several sizes too big for her, who looked as if she was there under Tanni's prompting. Her name, she was told, was Orla. Fine; she didn't care what her name was as long as they could establish one or two things from the word go.
"You mind if I ask you some questions?" Spider scratched her earlobe, just above three small hooped rings. The question was as much directed at Tanni as it was the young girl, even although she never took her eyes off Orla for a moment.
"Not at all." Tanni answered reasonably in his most polite growl. "Please, go ahead."
Spider looked Orla up and down for a moment. "Why?" She wondered with an uncomprehending shrug of her shoulders. "Why are you asking me?"
"Because Jemmiah said that we should." Answered Tanni succinctly, flattening his ears against the shrill noise of chirruping crickets from inside their tank.
"Jemmy…yeah," The girl tapped at the side of her face for a moment, pondering what she may or may not have said, "I think I did mention to her I was looking for a flatmate. But - and no offence here, friend - why would a jedi want to live with me? Surely the temple would be a better place for a start?" Spider felt Orla squirm under her intense scrutiny. Some Jedi this was if she objected to be stared at! "What's my humble abode got to offer that 'Yoda Mansions' hasn't?"
Tanni didn't so much as blink.
"Orla isn't a jedi." He replied.
"She sure looks like one, unless of course the toga and bed-linen look is spreading outwith the confines of the temple enclave." Spider's purple gloss-stained lips quirked into a crooked smile, happy with her joke. She could tell that this Orla, jedi or otherwise, did not know exactly what to make of her - and that pleased her quite a bit. Not many people did on first meeting her: if they weren't scared away or put off by what they saw then generally speaking the tattoos and the lizards did. Although blessed with attractive enough features, Spider's choice of garish hair colour, multiple nose rings and dark leather clothing did tend to make most people stop and stare. Orla was no exception, it seemed.
"We brought her back with us when we returned from Urior." Tanni explained as best he could, hoping that mention of the Kaligari disaster might well play on her sympathy and win some points for the girl. "But the council will not give permission to train her. As such she is in need of a place to stay."
"Hmmm." Spider continued to look her over predatorily, causing Orla to shiver just a tiny bit. "That's tough luck. I'm sorry to hear that. Well, as you can see - my home's in a little bit of a state right now. I have a spare room, which I can let you see in just a moment. It's quite spacious although sparsely furnished, so if you're expecting something a bit up-market then I'm afraid that this isn't really going to be your type of thing. Fresher room's through yonder. Got a bath and a shower. Hallway houses my spiders. In here you can see my lizards," she indicated two sides of the four walls in the living area completely covered over by huge, glass tanks, "and in my bedroom are my pride and joy: my dinkos. Oh, got a few snakes and Snipshears. One or two twig-insects." Spider shrugged goofily as if having been caught out at something vaguely embarrassing. "What can I say? I've had Sticky and Twiggy since I was at school. I liberated 'em from our biology class."
Orla stared down at the glass tank.
"And…those?" She wondered, speaking for the first time since being introduced. "W-what are they?"
"Lizard food." Spider smiled brightly. "Some people get a bit worried about that kind of thing…makes 'em a bit squicky. You don't mind, do you?" On eyebrow narrowed down to a seemingly impossible level, awaiting a negative reply. There were few people who did share her love of exotic creatures and the like but generally if people tolerated her pets then she was prepared to tolerate them in return…
Maybe.
"N-no." Orla stammered, looking mildly perturbed but little else. "I suppose a lizard has to live too…"
"My thoughts precisely!" Spider nodded approvingly. "You know, I think we could get on reasonably well if we managed to sort out a few ground rules. Anyhow, on with the questions…er," Spider looked down on the flimsy list of checkpoints she'd prepared, "so you like bugs?"
"Yes." Orla looked at Tanni uncertainly. She'd wanted to believe that the big cat knew what he was doing but she remained unconvinced. When asking his advice on how to act or what to say when interviewed by Spider, all Tanni had said was to "agree to everything" and try and look interested at all times. Quite what that said about the place she might be moving into she really couldn't say…
"Vrelts?"
"Yes."
"Lizards?" Spider flicked over a page to read the next sheet.
"Yes."
"Spiders or Dinkos?" Wondered the girl, scratching her bi-coloured pink and green hair.
"Yes, I'm fine."
Geri Pippage instantly relaxed and beamed, feeling altogether happier than before. She shouldn't really have doubted Jemmy's judgement. And having a semi-jedi or at least a force-sensitive person around might prove very handy should her Dinkos ever escape and need a little persuasion to get back into their homes…
"Well, you sound pretty much like an ideal flatmate to me!" Spider rubbed at her hands gleefully. What a stroke of luck! Oh, just one more thing…you do have money?"
"Nope." Orla shook her head firmly, leaving Spider under no illusions as to her financial situation.
For her part, Spider looked as if she'd been hit in the mouth by an iron bar. The first person who'd seemed anywhere decent, who actually could put up with the crickets on death row or the lizards looking longingly in their direction, and she was stony broke! Talk about getting your hopes up one moment and dashing them the next!
"No money at all?" She asked, much dismayed. "Jemmy! Stop doing this to me!!! How am I supposed to save up enough money when you start letting total strangers bunk at my place for nothing!"
Orla began to look slightly put out. "I'm nobody's charity case!" She grumbled irritably, feeling Tanni's fingers burrow uncomfortably into her shoulders. "Look, I can't help it if the jedi don't want me! I'll find somewhere else if all I'm going to be is a nuisance to everyone!"
"Where?" Demanded Tanni, trying to restrain her from walking towards the door of the landing.
"I don't know! Even the streets would be better than sharing with someone who doesn't want to see my face!" Orla huffed, shaking off Tanni's large, padded hand. The Togorian shot Spider a pleading look, begging her to do the right thing in this instance. Watching as Orla picked up her robe from a nearby seat, Tanni whispered:
"Ask her to stay!"
"Why?" Spider folded her arms indignantly.
"Because Jemmy said that you would! And because you will NEVER find anyone to share," he looked around the room, taking in the huge lizard tanks and strip lighting, "…such a dwelling!"
Spider snapped her jaw shut audibly, very much chagrined at Tanni's words - and in her own home to boot! She did like Orla…certainly if she could just get her to smile a little and maybe lighten up a bit then things might be okay. Jemmy was usually a fairly reliable judge of character too. Even so, what was she going to do for money? The Togorian may well have told her a harsh truth about her lack of applicants for room sharing but there was always a chance that someone as weird as herself existed out there who would come forward, wasn't there?
Okay - it was unlikely.
//Jemmy owes me BIG TIME for this.// Spider gritted her teeth, trying not to think about her very ill friend lying on a hard infirmary bed. //Kriff, looks like I'll have to tap my father for credits again…//
"Hey." Spider called Orla back just as she had got to the landing outside, half in and half out of the doorway, trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible. "Look…if you really want to stay until you get yourself sorted out then, sure. I don't mind. I mean it's not like I haven't done it before," Spider found her mind drifting back to Firzel and his brother who had in the past shared the couch in her living room for a few days, "and, well, I'd be glad of the company."
Orla remained both silent and suspicious.
"Once you're settled you can start maybe looking for a job…or get some education if you've a mind," Spider's tone of voice amply betrayed exactly what she thought of the latter option, "but I dare say I can hold off the rent until you've got something lined up."
This time it was Orla's turn to exchange a wary glance with Tanni.
"Accept." Tanni prompted, flexing his claws ever so subtly. "You'll find nowhere better, nowhere cheaper and nowhere so friendly."
"You've got the hang of this negotiation business, haven't you?" Orla remarked scathingly, letting her eyes run over the tall felineoid for a moment. Between him and Jemmiah it looked as if she didn't have much of a choice. Nowhere to go, no aim in life…she had to admit that the colourful Geri Pippage did seem fun if somewhat eccentric for one so young. The creepy-crawlies and beasties didn't thrill her but if it meant the difference between being destitute and having a roof over her hear then she was willing to give things a go. And above all she felt a sense of duty to Tanni, who had contrived to organise everything.
"Okay." She shrugged, tying to appear nonchalant but almost certain she resembled a petulant teenager instead. "If you're sure."
//Why is it that she makes it sound like she's doing ME a huge favour?// Spider's green eyelids lurched upwards in amused observation. //Kriff, Jemmy…what have you landed me with here? This is either going to work or it'll prove to be the most idiotic idea you've ever had - and that's saying something when you consider the stiff competition!//
Nodding, Spider gestured her back towards a thoroughly relieved looking Togorian, wondering what indeed she would have done had she decided not to come back. Nobody deserved to be on the streets. The little Jemmy had mentioned hadn't exactly endeared the idea to her…
"Okay," Spider smiled as Orla reluctantly shrugged her arms once more out of her robe, "later on you can go back and bring you stuff and move it in if you want."
"I have nothing." Orla replied quietly. "Just what I wear. And even that was borrowed from the temple."
Spider shook her head sadly. If that didn't qualify the girl as a charity case then she didn't know what did…

I must say that Tanni's right. There ain't nobody that wants to really live in that creepy crawly filled apartment!
But I do have a feeling that Spider and Orla are going to be good roommates!
Although what's up with having Frizel and his brother on your couch Spider, hmmmmm??
Wonderful Jem!

RE: The Lion Sleeps Tonight (JA): 2nd anniversary 15th Feb
Despite recent rumour I haven't disappeared into the Bermuda triangle, just trying to do alot of things that take priority.
But I have been reading, just lurking. I loved the Kryztan/Kurtas exchange... let's hope he can find he way back to the right path.
As for the last post, as soon as you switched from Olrin & Toms to Qui, I just knew the dog was going to appear!
It was made even more realistic to me by the fact I'm sharing Qui's discomfort just now, albeit in a lesser form (thank goodness!) so he has my every sympathy!
Oh, and for those wondering about Jaz & Co, I finished my main bit of story arc. Jem & I have agreed that I can add my remaining posts when it eventually appears on the website. (Something I'm NOT looking forward to putting up!

RE: The Lion Sleeps Tonight (JA): 2nd anniversary 15th Feb
WEEK FOUR, DAY THREE, HOUR TWO/THREE:
*************
With Qui-Gon in the process of being 'repulsar lifted' in the direction of the infirmary, and a somewhat less exuberant Zebedee led away by two penitent looking padawans, it left Obi-Wan standing in the uncomfortable presence of Kelik Mathers…a fact he wasn't entirely thrilled with. On one hand it did leave them free to talk things through at last, but on the other Kenobi was pretty sure that Kelik was desperately trying to keep himself from thumping him on the jaw! He could sense the man - not seething exactly - but working hard to find something polite to say to cover his considerable annoyance.
The fact neither of them had spoken in five minutes surely indicated how much of a struggle that was…
Obi-wan for his part merely walked, head slightly bowed, waiting for Kelik to say something. Even a comment about the weather, such as it was on Coruscant, would have been better than nothing. Smiling inwardly, Obi-Wan fought the urge to look at his wrist chrono to time how long it would take for the man to break the ice - one thing was for sure: it wasn't going to be him that spoke first!
Step by step, the padawan finally felt Kelik's irritation wane and ebb until finally sanity had triumphed completely over irrationality. The man weighed his words carefully and waited until they were within hailing distance of the lift before even deigning to look his reluctant companion in the face.
"You must know your way around quite well." Kelik ventured a tad gruffly. "The infirmary, I mean."
Obi-Wan thought momentarily of his master: the last image he'd had of the man was of his horizontal feet atop a stretcher, disappearing into the turbo lift, closely attended by An-Paj. It seemed odd, almost incomprehensible that it was his master on the repulsar bearer and not him! Over the years it seemed to Obi-Wan that he'd had an unfair monopoly of the healer's time and resources, although this was one burden he'd have been quite prepared not to share on this occasion.
"Too much time." Replied the padawan in a low, steady voice. "Especially of late."
Kelik, being the kind of person that he was, did not take Obi-Wan's meaning.
"Must be difficult, right enough," The Corellian man straightened the neck of his collar a fraction, "with all those missions and the like. I'm sure that danger must seem to be lurking around every corner…"
"That's usually because it is." Replied Obi-Wan laconically.
"And," Mathers continued, stopping beside the outer wall of the lift and drumming his fingers repeatedly against the surface, "That Kaligari business couldn't have been easy to cope with. Getting off the ship in one piece must have taken some doing, let alone surviving being stranded all that time…"
Obi-Wan was sure that Kelik was fishing for details regarding Jemmiah and how she had come to be in her present state, strapped to a life-support system within their infirmary, Qui-Gon no doubt having aquatinted him with the latest news. Somehow he didn't think that Kryztan's treachery had come up in the conversation, else Kelik would have been marching straight to find Yoda and demanding that Harkley be split from sternum to crotch. Well, if Qui-Gon hadn't told him then neither would he…
"It was eventful." Obi-Wan said in a dry voice.
"Were you hurt?"
The genuine curiosity in Kelik's voice threw Obi-Wan a little. "Scratches mostly. We got attacked by blood-seekers. Not terribly nice…it wasn't one of our better nights as I recall, but still…we got out of it more or less alright." He thought briefly of Jay, and began to wonder if he should revise his statement a little, for he had received no word as to his friend's condition. "Why do you ask?"
"Because I would be unhappy to think that you were in pain at all." Kelik paused momentarily to organise his thoughts. "I believe I have you to thank for the fact that she's still alive."
Obi-Wan smiled, and looked Kelik directly in the eyes like an equal for the first time.
"Is that why you are standing there wondering whether or not to kill me?" The padawan questioned lightly. "For someone who is meant to be a saviour, you seem to be spending a lot of time looking on me as if you wish to anoint me on the head with a blunt axe."
Kelik admired the forthrightness of the statement.
"It's difficult to loathe someone to whom my niece owes her life," Kelik admitted perhaps a touch regrettably, "and whilst I don't personally dislike you in any shape or form, I find myself feeling curiously let down that a jedi - of all people - might be responsible for getting Jemmiah pregnant in the first place!"
The man placed both arms squarely across each other, waiting to hear what the padawan had to say for himself. Of course he knew that accidents happened…but it was the fact that it had happened to Jemmiah that left such a bitter taste in his mouth. He'd promised to look after the girl as best he could…had sworn it on her mother's memory: and look what had happened? Some promise that had turned out to be! And all because of the young man standing directly opposite him!
"You don't think that a Jedi's capable of such a thing," queried Obi-Wan flippantly, "or that he shouldn't be?"
Kelik's face clouded noticeably. "I don't appreciate such disrespect where Jemmiah is involved."
"For the record, I don't appreciate your insinuation that such a 'disaster' might necessarily have been a terrible thing." Obi-Wan remained calm and composed, hoping that Qui-Gon might well be proud of the way he was handling the difficult situation. "The pregnancy was unexpected, unplanned and a total shock - to everyone. But after the initial disbelief and recriminations had died down, Jemmiah and I actually discovered that we were reasonably happy with the situation."
"You've asked her this?" Kelik asked pointedly.
"Yes," Obi-Wan answered equally acerbically, before adding, "have you?"
This time Kelik didn't have a clue what to say in reply. The padawan's accusation that he'd all but ignored Jemmiah both prior and after her miscarriage struck home with a vengeance: it was after all something he'd allowed to prey on his mind over the past months. To have it pointed out so roundly to his face my well have been deserved, but it didn't mean that he had to like it.
"Well, at least you don't cover your words with false diplomacy." Kelik muttered.
"It's not about diplomacy, nor is it about winning points against an opponent." Obi-Wan ventured, keep his manner as respectful as he possibly could in the hope it might diffuse a potentially nasty situation. "I have no wish to cause an argument: I simply do not have the energy or the inclination. Besides, pointless mud slinging would only upset Jemmiah. Why put her in that situation? We both have her best interests at heart, surely we can agree on that?"
"If that is so," demanded Kelik testily, "how is that a seemingly intelligent couple of people can wind up in such a mess? Why DID you put her in that situation? Didn't you take any precautions?"
Obi-Wan's face instantly lost any remaining trace of its Jedi dignity and turned a fiery, burning red. Surely Kelik would feel the flame-like heat radiating from his cheeks? Imagine even putting him on the spot in such a humiliating way! It became all too apparent at that moment exactly why Qui-Gon had infrequent 'clashes of personality' with the man, for in trying to protect those he cared for it seemed Kelik was quite at ease with stamping on the emotions of anyone who got in his way: not a particularly Jedi viewpoint!
"That is an impertinent question." Obi-Wan replied, sounding as brittle as he felt.
"Impertinent, yes. But I still think it's a reasonable question under the circumstances. You're obviously a clever young man," Kelik thought to resort to a little flattery, "which is why such stupidity seems a little out of character."
"For your information, and without getting technical, Jemmiah was on medication at that particular time…" Obi-Wan experienced the sensation of his face not merely burning but threatening to explode as well, "which Healer An-Paj later said most likely rendered the…the er…precautionary measures she was taking…ineffective." Obi-Wan somehow managed to stumble through his reply, feeling as if he'd been reduced to the size of a Dinko by the time he'd finished. "Not that it was any of your business at all."
"She's my niece." Kelik answered flatly. "That makes it my business."
"You make me sound like some serial violator of woman!" This time Obi-Wan couldn't fight the protestations, striving to rid himself of his rapidly rising annoyance but with little success. "I'm not like that. What happened…just happened!"
"It's not much of an answer."
"It is the only one you are going to get. For the record she was hardly pure as the driven snow before I had any intimate dealings with her!" Obi-Wan grimaced, feeling more than a little ungentlemanly for even admitting such a thing. "But I expect that doesn't matter to you, does it? As long as she doesn't get caught out and there's no evidence for the neighbours to point at nine months down the line? Or is it because it spoiled her value on the marriage market, and your son didn't want anything to do with spoiled goods?"
"Hold on a moment!" Kelik reeled back, utterly astonished at the sudden and embittered outburst from a young man of whom he'd seen little but dutiful silence. "That's going too far!"
"About as far as you interfered in my personal affairs." Pointed out Obi-Wan reasonably. "All you can see is your own narrow view. Why don't you try putting yourself in someone else's shoes for a change and perhaps you might get a different perspective on it all?"
The moment that the lift doors opened Obi-Wan marched through, not even stopping to see if Kelik followed on behind…

Obi! I'm not sure if losing your temper is the best thing, but for some reason this particular quote keeps popping into my head...
"Sometimes you have to slap them in the face to get their attention."
Well you certainly did that!
And I can't help but be somewhat proud of you for it.
Fabulous post Jem!

RE: The Lion Sleeps Tonight (JA): 2nd anniversary 15th Feb
WEEK FOUR, DAY THREE, HOUR TWO/THREE:
**************
Kelik stood on his own outside the open lift for what seemed an eternity, yet in reality was possibly only a matter of seconds. Talk about being metaphorically smacked in the face! And by a padawan, too - a young man in training to be a keeper of justice and peace within the galaxy! Kelik wasn't certain Kenobi would get too far with an attitude like that, even although he had to admit his own words had caused some provocation. Like 'a Reek loose in a narrow lane': that was how Thena had once described him. Always spoiling for an argument, not caring if he won or lost the fight in most cases, so long as he caused waves in the process. He was good at causing waves: it was a natural talent! Well, it seemed as if he'd picked one argument too many this time. The cub, as he had discovered, had teeth of his own…
As the doors began to shut slowly in a semi-circular arc, Kelik made a last dash attempt to scramble between them and into the compartment where Obi-Wan was already keying in the Infirmary floor level. Whatever he had said -whatever his strong opinions - it wouldn't do to get lost within the temple as he surely would without his padawan guide. Kelik Mathers was many things but stupid was not one of them.
"Wait a moment, please." The man squeezed his leg through the remaining space, picturing leaving his boot behind him, jammed within the gap. "You nearly left without me."
"I didn't think you particularly cared for the company." Obi-Wan answered quietly. "I therefore assumed you might prefer to make your own way to see Jemmiah."
Kelik snorted contemptuously. "I don't think so! My last attempts at navigating my way around this place almost led to a nervous breakdown. Don't believe all that nonsense about Corellians being able to find their way out of any place because I can easily tell you - it's all a big pack of lies!"
"I know." Obi-Wan answered gruffly. "I've seen it for myself. Have you ever been in an aircar when Jemmiah's driving? And women say we don't stop to ask directions!"
"True!" Kelik nodded as if at some unpleasant memory. "Very, very true!"
The Corellian stopped to watch the little display that ticked down the numbers as the lift descended, the green writing partially illuminating Obi-Wan's face. What was it about this young man that Jemmiah found so appealing? If only he could understand what it was, for Jemmiah never discussed her feelings with any of his family and as for the jedi, they kept themselves to themselves where possible. The end result was that Kelik did not know very much about Obi-Wan at all: what he was like as a person, his personal beliefs and opinions…everything that mattered to the typical Corellian. If only there was some way to dig past at all the Jedi training and see the real man that surely existed somewhere beneath, even if he was well hidden…
"I wonder if my wife will ever find her way to the infirmary." Kelik sighed, his tone suggesting that it wasn't something in which he had a lot of faith.
"It sounds almost as if you want her to have an accident." Obi-Wan permitted himself a stiff smile.
"What? No, er…I meant I wondered if she could find her way about the temple…" Kelik gave up after a moment, allowing the padawan his triumph. "Yes, I suppose it does! But if there was going to be a murder then let me assure you it would more likely be me as the victim and her with the vibro-axe! Infernally clever woman, my wife. Like most women I know of."
On that point Obi-Wan couldn't help but agree. Rela…Jemmiah…Meri…just a small handful of names he could site as examples of female intelligence. In some instances he felt his force insights to be meagre and humble whilst in the presence of so called 'female intuition'.
"My wife likes to look at the bigger picture. She sees past things I sometimes don't easily recognise or won't face up to head on." Kelik glanced towards Obi-Wan once again; amused at the way the padawan once more appeared a picture of composure. It really seemed as if that legendary Jedi calm was ingrained within each individual from birth: no doubt part of that midichlorian thing Jemmiah had attempted to explain to him. "I on the other hand sometimes need a slap in the face with a wet Nexu before I get the whole story."
He waited for Obi-Wan to prompt him to continue, but when no reply was forthcoming Kelik realised the apprentice was making him work hard in retaliation for his earlier 'personal' questioning of him.
"Like what you were saying about me before…about putting myself in someone else's shoes." He continued uncertainly, hoping he'd picked up on the young man's words properly. "You mean your shoes, don't you?"
Obi-Wan nodded, mentally noting the diminishing floor numbers on the panel, for once thinking that the infirmary couldn't come soon enough.
"It must be difficult for you to see past your role as Jemmiah's uncle. I understand that." Obi-Wan acknowledged conscientiously with a small inclination of his head towards the Corellian. "I've tried to imagine how it must seem to you. I am standing here beside you, and it must seem like I have done one of your family a great injury…or at least offered a mortal insult. I accept that you might think that as I jedi I might not even be worthy of Jemmiah, as we have no material wealth to speak of and therefor nothing to bring to such a match. But you must understand, these things are not important to the jedi - and knowing Jemmy the way I do, I don't think they mean that much to her either."
"She knows how to spend money." Kelik said wryly, as if educating the poor deluded young man on matters of which he could have no understanding. "I've taken her shopping, and let me tell you she has an expensive array of tastes…"
"All Jemmiah wants is to be safe." Obi-Wan shook his head sadly. "And above that she wants to be free to be loved. She's not comfortable with either thought, but it's the truth. Money means little when you don't have the freedom to use it, and Jemmy's been in that position. I've seen her at her happiest sitting on a broken, tattered old couch, watching holotoons; her hands wrapped around a mug of cocoa and my master's robe over her shoulders. Why would that be? Because she's safe. That's how she feels."
"Maybe." Kelik admitted, not wanting to own up to his own failed attempts at understanding his niece.
"Now try putting yourself in my shoes. What we are talking about here is the loss of a person - not a thing or an object. Just because our child didn't make it past three months of existence didn't make her any less human. Unplanned she may have been, but not unloved. How," Obi-Wan tried to get his meaning across by using a relevant comparison that Kelik might be able to comprehend, "would you have felt if one of your sons had died? You love them, don't you? Imagine one of them taken away and picture how that might leave you feeling."
Obi-Wan began to sense at last he was meeting with some small amount of success, judging by Kelik's rather shamed looking expression. It was a pity that he'd had to resort to such underhand methods in order to get him to understand what it felt like to look at things from the other side of the fence. He continued in a slightly more gentle fashion than before, knowing that Kelik was at least attempting to put himself in his place at long last.
"You might argue that at three months there was little to get attached to, but I would tell you differently. At first, like Qui-Gon and Evla, I was shocked by the news. Fatherhood," Obi-Wan explained carefully, "is not actively encouraged for jedi who work in the field, and for padawans it's as good as an expulsion ticket. Besides, I felt too young…I mean, what do I know about how to care for a child?"
"About as much as Jemmiah." Replied Kelik with a small smile.
"Precisely. It was Jemmy that got me thinking. If I was scared at the prospect then what must she be like? Younger than I was and at a stage where life that was just beginning to take off…we both felt at first that the pregnancy must be a burden. Maybe even a punishment," Obi-Wan eyed Kelik honestly, "for misbehaving in the first place. And then after a few weeks things started to change."
"In what way?"
Obi-Wan began to feel as if he were somehow being cross-examined by the council again. That had been traumatic enough for him at the time without having to relive it in his mind, remembering how he'd stood in the centre of the circle whilst they'd all gazed upon him, judging him…testing him…
"I realised that I'd changed as a person." Confessed Obi-Wan a touch wistfully, thinking back on those few weeks of quiet contentment. "Perhaps I could finally see that it wouldn't be such a bad thing. A life is something worth celebrating, isn't it? And whilst Jemmiah is perhaps - as she likes to inform us whenever possible - the least maternal person around she almost seemed happy. I'm thinking it was because the family net closed in around her and made her feel more protected than ever. Maybe she thought the prospect of motherhood wasn't totally horrendous after all. She had her friends…her family…"
//Not all her family.// Kelik closed his eyes, wishing away the guilty feeling in the pit of his stomach. //But I can't do anything about it now other than try and explain why to Jemmiah herself.//
"Her mother would have been pleased for her." Kelik admitted, wishing he could have inherited his late sister's philosophical view of life. "I'm sure of it. Stars alone know what that father of hers would have made of it all. Frankly, I doubt he'd have batted an eyelid."
Obi-Wan noted the almost petulant set of the man's lips and frowned, greatly puzzled. He gathered that there had been no love lost between Kelik and his brother-in-law, and that there had been some kind of quarrel between them, but still the animosity he was sensing didn't seem to tally with the bare facts he had been told by Jemmy. So what if his sister had married beneath her? It was hardly a crime by modern galactic standards. Many people he had met on his travels had done so…as long as there was mutual love then what did it matter how much money one partner had compared to the other?
"Is that why you don't care for me?" Obi-Wan ventured, wondering if he should challenge Kelik on such an obvious sore point. "Because I have no money, and Jemmiah would be committing herself to someone without wealth?"
"I don't want to see an uneven match like the one my sister found herself in." Agreed Kelik cautiously, flinching from the hawk-like intensity of Obi-Wan's even gaze. "And I don't want to see her alone like she was, either. You are a jedi…rarely in one place for more than a day at a time. How will that work? She'd be lonely and worried sick for you wherever you were sent. Just like her mother. And as for my sister's husband," Mathers thinned his lips to the point where Obi-Wan thought they might disappear, "He left behind more than his family on Corellia. Correction: he left behind more than ONE family on Corellia."
Obi-Wan titled his head slightly to one side in confusion. "I don't understand."
"Joel Gleshan had…how shall I put this, wandering tendencies which my sister either never found out about or swept under the carpet for the sake of her kids. I'm sure he jumped at the chance to return to Corellia. All that air/sea rescue nonsense must have made great cover for his other activities." Kelik found himself digging his nails into the palms of his hand. "Turns out he had another family on the other side of the planet. Spent his time flying back and forward between the two, trying to keep both parties happy."
In the silence that followed Kelik became curiously aware of the humming sound of the turbo lift. Likewise, Obi-Wan found himself willing the lift faster and faster on its journey.
"Now," Kelik breathed, "YOU try seeing that from MY point of view. And tell me if I should like it."

Holy plot twists Batman!
Now that was something I certainly wasn’t expecting! No wonder Kelik harbors a grudge against Obi (or all Jedi). I just hope that neither think that it’s a good idea to tell Jemmy about it. It would crush what little image she has for her father.
But I’m still quite proud of Obi-Wan for telling Kelik that he felt a loss over Emma as much as Jemmiah did!
Brilliant post Jem!
