I've been trying for a few days to think of how to sum up this story to this point... I don't think what I'm typing is going to be adequate enough. tongue

I think we've had the whole spectrum of emotions in this story: highs, lows, unexpected plot twists, angst, love, anger.. the list is endless!

Thank you to all the authors for the entertainment you've given me over the last two years (does that mean I congratulate myself as well? wink ). I've loved watching the way the characters interacted, dealt with the situations and discovered things about themselves as well as others. It's wonderful to see such a variety of characters in the story.

A special pat on the back for Jem... how you wrote all those posts for all those days I just don't know! tongue

I'm already looking forward to the epilogue, as well as other stories from all the Chronicle writers. happy

Bravo!

Great work, everyone! I'm still catching up, so I'll try for more feedback later. I can't believe how much has been written!

Anyway, I couldn't leave it hanging any longer, so here's another post. shock

Thanks to Mouse and Kit' for betaing. HaiGan, Jane, and Marnie I can tweak the times if necessary.

Week 3, Day 1

The soft cushioning of ferns and fallen leaves seemed non-existent as she stumbled along. Barely having the wits to continue in the right direction, lack of energy had her using trees for support. The pain in her limbs had settled in a dull ache, barely noticeable now. Vaguely she recalled some of her medical training, when the patient could no longer feel pain that was a bad sign. But she had to keep going, faster if possible. The footfalls behind her were still rapid and that, and the fact that she was about to lose her only chance to ever return home was all the incentive she needed.

“They’re going to leave without us!” Dalfor yelled from behind. His voice had grown coarse in the past few days with little food or water, and probably because he rarely exercised his voice. “Hurry up!”

“Do you want to go the wrong way? Well this is the pace I’m going.” Aware that her emotions were not as controlled as they should be, Sula took a breath of thick air and kept going, maintaining her lead – and her distance from Dalfor-. “They’re not going to leave without us,” she said calmly after a few moments.

They had spotted a ship in the sky, she couldn’t say how many days ago, they all blurred into one another, but the very instant they saw the bulky ship they started to run. It wasn’t logical, they couldn’t reach the ship within the first day and they certainly couldn’t run for that long. But that didn’t enter their minds. Weeks of poor food, little water, and irregular sunshine had left their minds as if they were in a fever.

Sula gulped for air again, resting for a moment against a tree. Her chest was tight and the air seemed to be growing thicker. She glanced behind her to Dalfor and although he would never admit it, he was struggling just as much. It was fortunate that they were only a short distance from the rescue ship now, because they wouldn’t last much longer.

***

“We’re nearly there!” Sula exclaimed in joyous relief. “We’re nearly there.”

For the first time since they met, she saw a flicker of something else in Dalfor’s expression. Not quite a smile, but a little different from his usual scowl. The jungle began to thin and ahead Sula could see an open field. Even the excitement of drawing close could not give them an extra burst of speed and they both continued to stumble along. Then suddenly they were there. Their final destination. But there was no ship.

Sula took a few steps in each direction, as if the ship would appear. Dalfor stood dumbfounded. After a moment of devastation he sparked back to life again. “You got it wrong! They’re still here, you just got it wrong!” Fuelled by rage he stalked after her, pointing at her and waving his arms as he continued to yell. “This is your fault! I told you, I told you!”

“Shut up, just shut up,” Sula whispered. She stared at the ground, shoulders slumped and arms slack at her sides.

It only angered him further and his face crumpled. “We have to get moving! You can stay here and die, if you want, but I’m going.”

“Don’t bother.”

“Fine.” He turned to leave, but stumbled upon some broken ground. He looked at the small gouge in the ground and then at similar marks all over the field.

“The ship was here.” Sula didn’t even need to turn around to know what he had discovered. “They left without us.” She walked around in small circles, with a blank expression on her face.

Dalfor was standing still again, shaking. He growled from the back of his throat and clenched his hands into fists. He stalked to the tree line and stood for a moment, breathing heavily and then threw his precious case into the trees. His hand got caught on a vine and he rips through it, then began whipping at the leaves, scrunching them into his fist and tore them from their trees.

Sula noticed somewhere in her consciousness but did nothing. She’d stopped walking and lowered herself to her knees. “They left without us.”

The blind rage left Dalfor quickly, he was too exhausted. Not able to blame anyone else, or take it out on anything else, his anger turned inwards. He had no one to blame but himself, this was a situation of his own making. He was in his own hell. He used to fear failing at his job and incurring the wrath of his boss, like he’d seen so many others before him suffer. And then as his plan took shape he was terrified he’d be discovered. Someone would see him shaving off a few credits here and there from his boss’ money. So many times he had been so close to just leaving, finding another job and forgetting all about the fact that he needed to money to create a new identity. All he’d wanted was to be free and this is where he ended up, stranded on some horrible moon with no hope of escaping. Not even a Jedi, with all the things they could, could get him out of it. And Sula was here too. She hadn’t done anything to him, had probably kept him alive over the past weeks, and she was here because of him. Because he was a coward. He probably could have done something to help the Jedi, not prevent the attack, but perhaps warn them. But he hadn’t, he just wanted to save his own skin. He’d made them into monsters to justify it and said nothing, so he could run and disappear. And now he was going to die, with no one but a Jedi for company.

He stumbled back to Sula and saw her kneeling on the ground. She eventually looked up at him, her face awash with confusion and loss. Her whole life had fallen down around her. The Jedi were apparently not what she thought they were. “They left without us.” Her mind could barely process the words.

Dalfor saw the desolation in her eyes. She was going to die because of him, but he wouldn’t let her die believing her own people betrayed her. “No. No. They’re coming for us! The atmosphere interferes with electronics, remember? They’re just scanning for us. That’s all. They would never leave, not until every last person was accounted for, you know that!”

Tears began to fall from her eyes and she shook her head, not believing him. Dalfor grabbed her shoulders and shook her. “They’re coming! They’re not going to leave! You said that! Are you going to give up on them? You never left me. No matter what I did, you never left. Jedi never leave!”

Sula coughed and began to cry wracking sobs. For an instant she’d lost faith in the Force and in the Jedi. Whether it was panic or weakness, she didn’t care, because she knew with every fiber of her being that they wouldn’t leave. Her life wasn’t going to end like this.

Dalfor saw the change, the new determination in her eyes, and almost began to believe himself.

***

Week 3, day 3

Sula squeezed her eyes, feeling an ache throb through her head. Gradually she opened her eyes, blinking at the bright light. All she could see was a gray wall and she frowned. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep in the field, Dalfor at her side.

“Master, she’s awake!” she heard a happy voice say, a girl. Then she felt a comforting hand on her arm. “You’re all right. We’re taking you home,” the girl said.

“Wha…” Sula attempted to ask what was going on, but her brain could not get her mouth to complete the sentence. Maybe she was hallucinating.

“It’s all right, Sula.” A male spoke now, older. How did he know her name? And then it sank in. She’d been rescued! “You were dehydrated and feverish, the treatment is finally taking effect. You’re going to be all right. We’re not far from Coruscant.”

“Dal… Dalfor?” Sula finally managed to get out.

“Your companion? He’s going to be fine as well. Now rest. You need to sleep.”

“I knew, I knew you wouldn’t leave me.”

“Never.”

Finally made it...

Imzadi.. I'm still in tears. First over the wonderfully awful descriptions of Dalfor and Sula running for the ship.. for what was it.. a day??? Then watching poor Sula lose faith... understanble as everyone does now and then. My tears turned to joy as Sula discovered she's been rescued... though I was very afraid it was going to turn out to be a dream!

Great post!!:D

Slowly getting there. Thanks for checking it over, Jemmiah. happy

***

Stepping out onto the docking platform, Nya glanced across the skyline. In the distance she could see the Temple, its spires rising up above any of the other buildings. Seamus came to a stop close by her shoulder. He offered a sad, but encouraging sort of smile and then without a word they both lifted their hoods and boarded the airtaxi that had been sent for them. The survivors the Dawn Raider had rescued had already been transferred to the Temple and Seamus and Nya had to return to the Temple.

The airtaxi hummed as they flew through the air, the steady, relaxing thrum Nya always associated with returning home. She stared out the window at the blue sky and the air cars below. Returning to the temple did not evoke the same feelings this time though. She was nervous, uncertain and in the privacy of her mind she admitted frightened as well. After the rescue, she had not had anything more than a few moments here and there to herself. Ambianca was always in her quarters with questions and conversation. Away from there, there had been the crew, the other Jedi and an endless stream of work. Her focus had been required elsewhere and Nya had not yet had the chance to consider what would happen when she returned to the Temple. She tried to run through it quickly on the return journey, giving neither the situation nor her own feelings adequate attention. They would have to report to the Council, have post-mission check-ups, and check on the others that had been rescued.

In a few minutes they had arrived at one of the Temple’s landing platforms and Nya was startled out of her thoughts. They docked smoothly and the door hissed open. Seamus exited first and Nya took her customary place a step behind him. Their hoods were still drawn and they appeared as the quintessential Jedi, solemn and secretive, protected and insulated against the outside world by their brown robes. Crossing the platform they noticed three other figures there. Instantly they identified them by the familiar presence they each radiated. Both Seamus and Nya paused in their strides.

Nya lowered her hood, revealing her fair skin, dark hair, and an emotion filled expression. She seemed sad, frightened, and hurt all at once; vulnerable but hard at the same time. Kryztan stood just outside the entrance to the Temple, flanked by Master Windu and Kurtas Kizzen. The elder Jedi were looking at him expectantly, seemingly wondering why he had stopped. He only stared at Nya. Eventually, Master Windu seemed to return Kryztan to action and they approached.

Nya swallowed and her eyelids fluttered quickly as she tried to control herself. Now only a few paces apart both parties stopped. Master Windu appeared set to say something, but Kryztan beat him.

“Nya.” It was a pained whisper. His eyes looked through her for a moment as he remembered in too perfect detail what he had done to her. “I’m sorry.”

She drew in a deep breath and again her eyelids fluttered. “You’re being sent away?” She wasn’t sure how she came to that conclusion, but somehow she knew it was true.

Kryztan nodded, still staring at her with wide, guilty eyes.

“Where’s your Master, is he… he isn’t…”

“No. Master Berlingside is staying…”

“I’ve taken over Kryztan’s training,” Kurtas interjected.

“I know I don’t deserve it, but…” Kryztan trailed off.

At first Nya didn’t say anything, not knowing if she agreed with that or not. “Can we have a moment please?” She glanced at her own Master and then to Kurtas and Master Windu. They shared a look and eventually took a few steps away, far enough to give them the appearance of privacy but close enough to hear exactly what was said. Mace sent Seamus a look that asked for an explanation, but he waved indicating that later would be better.

“I am sorry, Nya.” There was nothing more he could say. He couldn’t even claim that he hadn’t intended to hurt her, because the truth was that he had and they both knew it. The apology, whispered and thick with guilt, was followed by a long silence. Nya didn’t say anything, but continued to stare at him, meeting his eyes, looking at him as if searching for something. Perhaps to see if he was being genuine or maybe to catch any remaining trace of her childhood friend. Kryztan himself was not sure there was any to find. He didn’t see disgust in her eyes, only sorrow and pain. “Can you ever forgive me?” He spoke without meaning to, voicing the question he knew he had no right to ask, but which plagued his mind anyway.

Nya blinked rapidly and raised her head slightly, startled. “I have to,” she answered quietly, as if it were obvious. “It’s what we do.”

He gulped. “That’s very Jedi-like of you.” He spoke without bitterness, only admiration and touched sadness at knowing it was because she had to. From the day they arrived at the Temple they had been taught and shown not to hold onto anger. Nya had learnt the lesson well, far better than he had.

“I don’t know any other way. But forgiveness is not the same as acceptance.”

He suddenly felt wary.

“You hurt me, more than I thought anyone could,” she finally gave voice to what they both knew. “I don’t know… I don’t know what’s going to happen when you come back. I know I can’t stop loving you because of this,” she offered, “otherwise our friendship meant nothing. But I don’t know if I can accept it, if you can be trusted.”

“I don’t even know,” he said hoarsely.

“You deserve the chance to find out.”

He let out a shaky breath. “You’ll… you’ll give me a chance?”

Nya nodded slowly after a moment. “I can’t gaurentee… but we’ll… we’ll see.”

“Thank you.” Kryztan reached out, as if to take her hand.

Nya jerked her hand away and took a step back. She looked down at the platform.

He came back to himself, feeling as if he had plummeted back into reality from a great height. “I’m sorry.”

“I know.” Ordinarily she would have said that it was all right. But it wasn’t. Nya had always thought that she would always be able to forgive, to live up to what they had been taught, but it was much harder than that. And the Masters had never said it would be their friends they would have to forgive.

The shipped hissed, indicating the engines were full charged. Kryztan glanced over his shoulder to the waiting ship and then to his new Master, now approaching them.

“It’s time to go,” Kurtas said to him. He looked between the two Padawans for a long moment and then gave Nya a nod before turning to wait on the boarding ramp.

“Bye,” Nya said quietly.

Kryztan swallowed. “Bye.”

She offered a hesitant smile, which he returned with equal hesitancy. With a final look to Master Windu, he headed for the ship. Both the Kurtas and Kryztan looked back to the group, but then boarded the ship, disappearing behind to closing hatchway.

The ship was growing distant in the skyline before anyone spoke. “Shall we head inside?” Master Windu suggested.

Nya sniffed a little and then nodded. Instead of walking in front of her, both Masters walked at her side, flanking her as they entered the large doors to the inside of the Temple. No words were exchanged, but a silent agreement had been reached. The questions would wait, but they had most of the answers they needed.

That was a wonderful parting between Kryz and Nya - between childhood friends who have no idea if their paths would cross again - full of quietly stated emotion. I loved that Nya felt should would be able to forgive Kryztan for the terrible things he had done, even although she was honest enough to admit she might not be able to trust him again. It's going to be interesting to see how the likes of Kylenn and Nya manage to carry on in the wake of all these revelations. happy

Well done Imzadi! grin

What a hard thing to happen between friends! I liked that Nya said that she would forgive him, but wouldn't be able to trust him.

I think she was quite fortunate to be able to confront him before he left. I agree with Jem that it will be intresting to see how Nya and Kylenn will go on with their lives.

Fabulous Imzadi! happy

I've just finished finally reading this fic,
I found the plot points for Rela to be very good and could understand her feelings of loliness, I'll have to read Training of A Merc.
I liked the interactions of Mace with Toms & Orlin, found it very sad for Orlin to arrive home to such bad news. I would be intrested what Del-Isa thinks of Mace looking after the two young padawans.
I found the whole Quilibet & Romy arc to be very good. And Quilibet's scanning ability to be very intresting. Ambianca was very well developed extra in this fic, from initally trying to gain at least peace with Jemmiah to missing her master to their joyous reunion.
I found Far to be very funny whilist he was addicted to the fruits.
Gui-Gon & Sal were funny whilist on the moon, and Sal herself was very funny whilist on the Kaligari.
It should be very intresting when Smoochie gets discovered, I do wonder what will happen to Leona.
The whole arc with Kryztan that began with ANTAR was very good, I would be intresting to see more of him or more of the Dark Presence it would be fascinating.
Dex was nicely relieved conc Kurtas taking overy Kryztan's training, found his trip to the Library and "Noo Noo"'s reaction very funny.

Looking forward to the Epilogue

Overall its amazing Series to read and a credit to all its wonderful authors.

::Collapses in sheer exhaustion, wanting to cry, wanting to scream, wanting to die of depression...::

And not because of the writing. Because I finally finished reading this masterpiece! Holy cow is the first thing I can coherently say. I mean, wow. Worth the two years it took. I loved the new characters, especially Quilibet and Romy. Romy is now my favorite Master. Loved the survival skills, seeing Mace Windu lighten up, seeing the way "from adversity a brother is born" (Proverbs 17:17). Loved Orla, even if she's not a Jedi. I especially loved the interaction between Obi and Jemmy. Second-place was Rela and Simeon.

Awesome job, all.
