Welcome Thanas. I hope you´re going to enjoy the story.
As for the rest of you: "Finally, you could say."
The Colliding of Empires
"Excellent." stated Takor Kasom. "Really. Just as good as the original."
"We will see." said Perry Rhodan, who tried to dampen the enthusiasm of the man from Ertrus. His eyes moved over the eight men and one woman standing before them.
"Oh, come on, Sir. You should have a little more faith into the comrades from the disguise-department. You used their services a lot more than i did, so you should know the qualities of the masks better than me."
"I do. But i also know, how often things went wrong despite our best efforts. Besides, do i hear a hidden hint about my advanced age in your speach?" mocked Rhodan.
"Grandadministrator! I would never dare to remind you about your more than sixhundred years of ... ups." a broad grin appeared on Kasom´s face.
"You see what i have to endure the entire time?" stated Atlan, who entered the room just in time to hear the last exchange between Perry Rhodan and Takor Kasom.
"Endure? Lordadmiral, i´m hurt." Kasom made a sad face and pressed his shovel-sized hands against his chest. "I always thought you kept me around because i´m the best and brightest and ... ."
"Certainly not in the interest of the supply-budget." interrupted Atlan. "How would you like a reduction by ten percent?"
"Uhhhhh."
"Only ten percent? Why don´t you cut it in half?" suggested Perry Rhodan.
"Oh no." moaned Takor. "Sir, i had no idea, that the SolarEmpire is in such a desperate condition. Tell me, what can i do?" the tall man whined.
The acting abilities of the ertrusan caused Perry Rhodan to laugh. "First, why don´t you have a last look over our away-teams. I don´t want them to get into trouble just because something might be wrong with the cut of their clothings."
Kasom turned serious. "Already done, Sir. We made them as good as we could. But the final test will be the practice."
"You don´t have to worry, Sir. We´ll be careful. And if things come to the worst we still have the mutants." said Lieutenant Thomas, who lead Number Two of the away-teams.
"Better not." stated Lieutenant Nosinsky, who was leading Team Three. "We might get into a situation, where not even the mutants will be able to help us."
"We don´t expect such a situation." explained Atlan. "Until now nothing hints at the empire having 5d-tech, so the only danger to the mutants would be other mutants."
"What about Lord Vader?" asked Arthur Ruul, who was in charge of Team One.
"We don´t expect you to meet him at the places you will go. Besides, Lord Vader will be at the meeting with the emperor."
"Meeting is good." muttered Rhodan. "According to Grandwezir Pestage there will be a full-grown party."
That statement caused the other persons present to smile. Rhodan´s aversion against receptions, parties and the like was well-known.
"We all have to make sacrifices for the sake of diplomacy." Atlan´s voice sounded consoling, but Rhodan knew him long enough to know, that this wasn´t the case. Atlan would rather drop dead to the floor, than show compassion for his friend in such a matter.
"Just that sneaking three groups of our crew onto the planet would be counter-productive to our diplomatic efforts." countered the Grandadministrator of the SolarEmpire.
The "Dante´s Inferno" wasn´t going to land on Coruscant. The terrans had been told, that there was no landing-field big enough for the two-and-a-half-kilometer wide spherical ship, but the leading people of the expedition suspected, that the authorities of the Galactic Empire were hesitating to allow a warship like the ultra-carrier into their capital. Because of this Rhodan had decided, that the official contact-group would use one of the light cruisers to travel to the surface. The official contact-group and three away-teams which were going to have a look at Coruscant in disguise.
Each team consisted of three members. One member of each team was a mutant.
Team One was lead by Arthur Ruul. Ruul was an ordinary looking man with a few pounds to much and whose only interest seemed to be his own wellbeing. To live and to let live appeared to be the main rule in his life. But people with such an attitude weren´t joining the SolarFleet and even if, they would never be employed aboard the flagship. The second man of Team One was sergeant Olaf Halfason. The tall and muscular blond man usually served in the communications- and sensor-section of the "Dante´s Inferno" and during his free time he studied Xenopsychology. The descendant of proud viking ancestry was hoping to make his degree within a few months. Tako Kakuta, who was the mutant of Team One was the exact opposite of Halfason. The teleporter from Japan was a small and wiry build man. Like most of the mutants he had been with Rhodan from the beginning, back in the year 1972, when Perry Rhodan had been the first human on the moon and when he had first made contact with the representants of an extraterrestrical culture.
Matthew Thomas, who was leading Team Two, looked way to young to be a Lieutenant. Big brown eyes were casting a melancholic, sometimes sad look at the world. The tall, slender man was an idealist at heart and sometimes mocked as being to soft. But Rhodan knew this type of man. It were men like Thomas, who fought better and with all their strenght for something they thought to be right, than anybody else. The second man of the team was Pablo Alvarez, a specialist for computers and engineer for high-energy-systems. He also belonged to the pioneer-troops and served as martial-arts-instructor aboard the ship. During the last four years Alvarez had been Fleet-Champion in his weight-class, trice in Judo and once in the arkonid Dagor. Betty Toufry, who was telepath and telekinet completed Team Two.
What left Team Number Three, commanded by Lieutenant Conrad Nosinsky. If Arthur Ruul appeared to be good-natured and Matthew Thomas melancholic, Conrad Nosinsky radiated cold, ruthless determination to succeed at the task given to him. The twenty-three year old Lieutenant, who would have fit perfectely into the uniform of the german "Reichswehr" of the first half of the 20th century believed strongly into terran superiority over the rest of the milkyway and the invincibility of the SolarFleet. To much time -more than twohundred years- had passed since the last serious defeat for the young man to know better. On the other side caused this believe Nosinsky to work as hard as possible and to encourage those around him to do the same to make sure, that Terra´s position of superiority wasn´t lost. Nosinsky wasn´t necessarily the kind of man Rhodan would have sent on a mission of first contact, but he wanted to get a better picture of Coruscant´s lower regions and the good Conrad seemed to be the right man for that kind of job. The second man of Team Three was Peter Carter, a man whose orange-golden skin and darkblue hair gave him away as coming from Rual, a planet in the Rigel-system that had been colonized by the terrans fourhundred years ago. He served in the weapons-section of the "Dante´s Inferno"´s central when he wasn´t reinforcing the troops aboard one of the corvettes of the huge ship. There he would have been in charge over a platoon of battle-robots. Ras Tschubai, the tall teleporter from Africa completed Team Three.
"Only if we are caught and identified as terrans." reminded Matthew Thomas, adressing the concern of Perry Rhodan.
"And it won´t come to that." stated Conrad Nosinsky with a cold smile. "Physically there is no difference between us and the humans of this galaxy."
"But you and your comrades have still to be careful." confirmed Atlan. "Your clothes are based on the tapes we made during the evacuation of Tholaris IV, so you shouldn´t raise suspicions because of them. But you could give yourself away but countless other things. The way you walk, how you hold your head, how you speak, all of those things can give you away as strangers."
"We watched the tapes for preparation, too." said Thomas. "Not that we got much information out of them, but if we are lucky we´re thought to be stormtroopers or officers on leave."
"And even if we are identified as strangers, there is no way, that somebody can tell, if we are from another galaxy or one of the million worlds of this GalacticEmpire. It is impossible for a living being to know them all." added Ruul.
"That still leaves your weapons and other devices, unfortunately."
Rhodan sighed.
Atlan was in that mood again. When it was necessary to become active or if something was to be done without hesitation nobody was quicker and more eager than Atlan. But when there was enough time for preparations and planning his tenthousand year old friend turned into a cold, patient reptile, that didn´t move until its unfortunate prey was in reach and then he stroke, quick, without mercy. And when it became necessary to sent others into danger the former emperor of the ArkonEmpire became worse than an overprotective mother-hen, complaining about every detail and reminding his men to be careful and ...
"We can´t send them unarmed and it is better for them, if they are on the way with weapons they´re used to." he reminded his friend.
Every member of the away-teams was armed with miniature grenades, thermo-blaster, needle-thrower and a small vibro-knife. For defensive purposes they were equipted with personal shieldprojectors, antigrav and cloaking-devices. The power-source for those was a masterpiece of sigan micro-engineering and disguised as belt-buckle. Somebody who searched for their energy-signature had to come very close, less than a meter, before his or her scanning device would discover them, at least in theory. The problem was, that the men and women of the SolarEmpire had no idea, how good the sensors of the imperials were.
"Alright, alright, i already stop complaining. At least i´ll be with you for once and prevent you from doing something stupid." grumbled Atlan.
During his tenthousand years long life the arkonid had learned, that there were always things to improve, had seen the most carefully crafted plans go horrible wrong, because something was missing. Perhaps it had been impossible for destiny to prevent Atlan from getting the pragmatic, if not fatalistic attitude, that he so often displayed and that was often mistaken for pessimism even by his most closest friends. After all those years at the side of Perry Rhodan and his other companions Atlan was still a loner, subconsciously knowing, that one day his time with the terran would be over. Perhaps not in hundred years, perhaps not in thousand or even another tenthousand years, but one day with certainity.
If they survived that long.
Takor Kasom clasped his huge hands together. "Well, if everybody is ready we should go aboard the "DIO-11". There is an emperor waiting for us."
In numerical order the three scout-teams left the ready-room and were shortely followed by Rhodan, Atlan and Kasom. It wasn´t a long way from the room, where the informal briefing had taken place to the hangar of the light cruiser they would use to travel to Coruscant.
Like the "Dante´s Inferno" itself the light cruisers of the Odin-Class were a recent addition to the SolarFleet. With a size of hundred meters they were the largest units carried aboard the ultra-battlecarrier. Fifty of those ships were transported inside twenty-five hangars in the main ringroll.
Commanding officer of the "Dante´s Inferno-Odin-11" and its sixty men strong crew was Commander Sven Henderson, already an experienced officer despite his youth and one of the most promising officers of fleet, but also something of a dare-devil. This time however the terrans expected no trouble and so Henderson was probabely sentenced to a more or less boring mission.
Rhodan was the last one to enter the central station of the light cruiser. Present were, aside from the regular crew and the nine members of the three teams, Icho Tolot, Gucky, Iwan-Iwanowitsch Goratschin, the telekinet Tama Yokida, John Marschall, Takor Kasom, Colonel Fuller, who was second-in-command of the "Dante´s Inferno"´s groundtroops, Captain Rado, who commanded one of the "Dante´s Inferno"´s cruiser-squadrons, four other Lieutenants and Atlan.
"Grandadministrator aboard." announced Henderson.
"We are ready to go." answered Rhodan with a calm voice.
When the gate had opened the "DIO-11" was pushed out of the hangar by strong magnetic fields and seconds later the thrusters of the ship were activated. Slowly the hundred meter big sphere accelerated towards Coruscant.
----
Thousands of kilometers away, in a room on the top floors of the imperial palace, Darth Sidious, emperor Palpatine, was sitting in a chair, watching the descent of the alien starship. The room was darkend, the only light coming from outside through the large windows and from the single, large screen, that was active. Deeper in the shadows of the room, only given away by his mechanical breathing, stood Darth Vader.
A space-lane had been cleared for the visitors from another galaxy and satellites in orbit of Coruscant were transmitting images of the small sphere departing its mothership. Now the ship passed two of the Golan-Defense-Stations, that orbited the capital planet in a slow, almost unconcerned manner, as if unaware of the powerful weapons of the spacestations.
"Your new acquaintances are either very careful or very self-confident, my friend." stated the emperor, breaking the silence.
"I would assume, that they are both, my Master." answered the Dark Lord of the Sith. "Until now we have seen only glimpses of what those people are capable of and we have to find out what else they can do. And if they are friend or foe."
Palpatine turned his head towards his right hand. "But you would prefer them as friends."
"I think that they could be valuable allies, yes, but i don´t view them as friends. A Sithlord has no friends as you yourself taught me long ago my Master."
"That is what you think, but i can feel how you are drawn to them, like you are drawn to every new challenge, if you admit it or not, Lord Vader." The emperor gave his apprentice a long, hard look. "We have come to a turning point, how, i can not say, but the arrival of those aliens will be like a catalysator for things to come may they be good or bad for us."
Vader considered those words carefully. Palpatines most important weapon aside from his brilliant, insidious mind was his foresight of things to come, his ability of precognition. It was, what allowed him to look through the shemes and planes of his court. It was the one advantage, that put him one step in front of anybody else and for Vader, who as a Sithlord himself belonged to the few people, who knew about this ability of the emperor, it turned every move towards absolute power for himself into a dance on raw eggs.
And now Palpatine admitted, that he wasn´t able to see the future? A strange sense of deja-vu came over Darth Vader, since he had known another master of the force, whose vision had been clouded at the advent of drastic changes for the galaxy. But Palpatine wasn´t Yoda. Why would the emperor admit something, that could only be perceived as weakness?
"You believe there is more to them, than meets the eye, my Master? That there is a hidden intention behind their appearance?" Palpatine was the only being, that was still able to cause feelings of fear inside Vader and besides of that there was still so much to learn before Vader could take the power for himself, but what if it was better to do without that knowledge? Knowledge was a form of power after all and the emperor would certainly not allow, that his apprentice would use that newfound knowledge against him.
Palpatine watched his most powerful servant carefully. His apprentice hadn´t taken the bait Palpatine had offered.
Only a short time ago he had been forced to realize, that Darth Vader became more and more difficult to read, that the shields, that cloaked his true thoughts and emotions were to effective to be pierced unnoticed. It had only be a small slip on Vader´s part, but it had been enough for Palpatine to glimpse the carefully hidden attitude of Vader. Before he had been able to believe, that Darth Vader had surrendered himself to his position as Palpatine´s watchdog and prime henchman. That he was satisfied with being second-in-command of the empire. How long, wondered Palpatine, have i only seen, what my servant wanted me to see? Perhaps the appearance of Luke Skywalker had been a good sign, since the emperor probabely had to get rid of Vader very soon.
"I believe, that there is a hidden agenda, yes. And if we don´t see the things to come, it will be more difficult to make the right decisions. It might be possible, that we make decisions, that we´re going to regret."
The hidden warning wasn´t lost on Vader, but the more important piece of information was, that Palpatine wasn´t immune to striking out blindly, if he didn´t knew, whom to hit. Something the entire empire suffered from. Be it the Ghorman-massacre or the destruction of Alderaan, the empire wanted its subjects to be addicted to fear, but it was over-dozing. Force had to be used like a scalpell, not an axe. While Vader considered these thoughts, Palpatine continued.
"Things should develop in a different way. I doubt, that their intentions are as benevolent as they claim. Who tells us, that they are not the vanguards of an extragalactic invasion-force?"
"You are thinking about the warnings made by Admiral Thrawn about extra-galactic invaders?" asked Vader.
"You didn´t?"
"I did. But i have met with those people and didn´t found anything suspicious."
"As you said yourself, we have no idea, what else they are capable of. What if they deceived you?"
"In that case the reception this evening will be an excellent opportunity for them to behead the empire of its leadership." stated Darth Vader smoothly, ignoring the hidden insult. He was rewarded by the sight of Palpatine stiffening for a microsecond.
"No." muttered the emperor. "No, i would have seen that. But you are right, we need more information."
Meanwhile the ship of the aliens had taken down on the landing-field.
----
The "DIO-11" landed on the eastport of Coruscant. The ship could have reached the landing-field a lot sooner, but the terrans had taken their time. They had searched for places where to drop their scout-teams, the regular crew of the ship with passive sensors, the telepaths with their paraphysical perceptions and the teleporters with short jumps.
Gucky was just returning from such a short jump, when the ship took down. Deactivating his personal cloaking-device he reported. "I´ve found a place where to drop our people. A public library."
"Excellent Gucky. Ras has found another place, a department store."
"Is Kakuta already back?" wondered the mousebeaver.
"No, but he ... ." the "woosh" of air pushed away marked the return of the third teleporter and interrupted Perry Rhodan. "There he is. And?"
"The restroom of a bar. There is a constant coming and going so our people shouldn´t raise suspicions, when they leave the etablissement. Nobody should notice, if people, who haven´t entered through the regular entrance are leaving."
"Ras was just describing the department store he has scouted out." explained Rhodan and then turned back to the away-teams. "You should be able to get some local currency there. I would suggest you all go there first, get some money and then split up. Each of the teamleaders has some jewels or precious metals with him you can use to bargain."
"You all know what to look for." added Atlan. "Look for the presence of the empires executive branch, how the people behave, get information about their technology, culture, history such things. The library Gucky discovered would be a good starting point.
"Sir, there is a speeder approaching." reported Sven Henderson.
Rhodan winked impatiently at the teleporters. "You´ll better hurry, since this will be our escort to the palace. Now go."
Ras Tschubai gripped Conrad Nosinsky and Peter Carter at the shoulders and vanished with them. Gucky took the hands of Betty Toufry and Matthew Thomas, while Pablo Alvarez placed his hands on the narrow shoulders of the Ilt. The mousebeaver as a telepath had been able to glimpse the target-coordinates from Ras Tschubai´s mind and followed instantely. Tako Kakuta, who transported Arthur Ruul and Olaf Halvason had to concentrate on the trail left by the two other teleporters through the fifth dimension, then the three men vanished too.
Ten seconds later Gucky reappeared. "Mission accomplished, scouts are dropped." The meter-high being saluted and made a pirouette, what nearly caused him to fall over.
"Fine." stated Rhodan. "You know what to do?"
"Yes." answered the mousebeaver and made a sour face. "You´ll have a good time at the palace, while i will stay here with Tolot and Henderson and be bored to death."
"Lieutenant Guck."
"Alright, alright, i won´t be bored to death, i will look out, if our away-teams or you and company get into trouble and if you do, i´m the one to get you out. Seriously, do you think the imperials will try something stupid?"
"One never knows."
"I could go with you. Should they try something stupid Henderson can drop a bomb on them."
"The Grandadministrator would be very grateful for a threethousand gigaton-bomb dropped on a building he is in." grumbled Kasom.
"Henderson shall use a smaller bomb, idiot." muttered Gucky back.
"Enough." finished Atlan the bantering. "It is time to go and we don´t want our hosts waiting." He turned to the door.
"Good luck, my children." said Icho Tolot, who had stayed silent until now.
----
Fortunately the speeder sent from the imperial palace was big enough for the entire group.
To the surprise of the terrans their driver hadn´t looked shocked, scared or even interested in them, not even at the sight of the double-headed Iwan Iwanowitsch Goratschin or the giant Takor Kasom. A small wink from Rhodan and John Marshall started to make small-talk with the pilot of their speeder.
"May i ask, if you´re often ordered to escort people from the starport to the palace?" started the telepath.
"Three or four times a day. That is usually enough to fill my shift." answered the older man.
"So i guess extraplanetary visitors are a common sight." mused Marshall.
"Hey, what do you think? That you´re on Naboo or Tattooine? This is Coruscant, so don´t believe i´m impressed. I´ve transported them all, ambassadors, counts, dukes, princesses from Kuat. They came all to see the emperor and to complain about what went wrong in their sector and what fool their local Moff is. You have a sympathic face, so i´ll warn you: From the way you´re talking you´re here to meet with Palpatine, but call yourself lucky if one of his advisors lowers himself to deal with you. I tell you, i´ve transported them all, they are that small with hat, when i bring them back to the starport and ... ."
"Our driver seems to be of the talkative kind." muttered Rhodan towards Atlan.
"And he is not very polite. He behaves like we´re from some kind of backwater-system. Is this the chauvenism of a citicen of this galaxy´s capital planet, purpose on the side of our hosts or simply bad luck?"
"In any case he doesn´t seem to know, that we are extra-galactic. And i would think, that our pilot isn´t too satisfied with his life." answered Rhodan with a small smile.
"You heard him yourself, sir. The only thing the poor guy has to do is to drive arrogant, self-absorbed VIPs around. Marshall´s attempt at a conversation is probabely a sign of provincialism."
Meanwhile the speeder had moved through artificial valleys and mountains of mile high buildings when in front of them a pyramid-like structure bigger than anything else the terrans had seen so far on this planet appeared.
"Is this the imperial palace?" asked Marshall their pilot.
"What else should it be?" asked the pilot back. "Darth Vader is living in a fortress and Prince Xixor´s palace was destroyed a few weeks ago. Of course nobody knows, what really happened, but if you ask me, Prince Xixor crossed paths with Vader once to often." The man threw a glance at his display. "Seems you are lucky. We are expected at the top levels." The speeder started to ascent and moved over the obsidian plates that covered the outside of the imperial palace. "Looks good, doesn´t it? From two kilometers on upward the black stone is ornamented with hieroglyphes and symbols in gold and platin. The stardragons might know, what they mean, but it is said, that Palpatine went berserk, when he discovered a mistake in the writings." The speeder finally entered one of the hangars of the imperial palace. "So, here we are."
When the vehicle had settled down on the floor a door opened and soldiers with red helmets and red cloaks emerged, forming a spalier. The pilot of the speeder started to swallow, when he saw the haggard man, clad in expansive looking robes, who was walking quickly towards the speeder.
"Sate Pestage and an entire company of the royal guards." He whispered. He looked back at Marshall in awe. "Maybe you are more important, than i thought, after all."
"Don´t worry about it." consoled the telepath from australia. "We are often underestimated." He left the speeder and joinded the other terrans. Turning back for a last time he said. "I hope we´ll see you again."
Joining his companions John Marshall failed to notice the suddenly pale face of their pilot.
"Grandadminstrator Perry Rhodan, Lordadmiral Atlan, on behalf of my Master, His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Palpatine i great welcome on Coruscant."
Pestage tried to sound dignified, but the emperor had ordered him to hurry and almost shouted at him, what hadn´t happened in a long time and Sate Pestage had been with Palpatine almost since the beginning, when Palpatine had still been an ordinary senator of the old republic. In any case the Grandvezir sounded like out of breath, but not dignified, when he greeted the visitors from the milkyway.
"We are pleased to be here and thank you for the warm welcome." answered Perry Rhodan polite. "May i introduce my entourage. Lordadmiral Atlan you already know, John Marshall, Tama Yokida, Iwan Goratschin, Colonel Fuller, Major Kasom, Captain Rado and the Lieutenants Reaves, Allen, Anderson and Stover."
"Greetings to you, too." said Pestage. Then he looked at the box carried by Stover and Anderson. "May i ask, what ... ."
"It is tradition on terra to bring a present, when visiting a new friend." explained Atlan.
"How nice." stated Pestage. "I hope you understand, that our security personal will have to take a look at it first." He winked at two of the guards in red, who stepped forward and took the box away from Stover and Anderson.
"Of course we understand." answered Rhodan. "Security comes first, after all."
"What about our weapons?" asked Kasom.
"You can keep them. We are only concerned about explosives and the guards will have an eye on everybody. Now, if you would please follow me."
The terran group followed Sate Pestage out of the hangar and through a number of large corridors.
And when they finally reached a door guarded by another quartett of the crimson-cladded soldiers Perry Rhodan still wondered, why the imperials were concerned about explosives, but not about blasters.

Nice work there. Please tell us the next update is the actual meeting.
Oh, and it's "security personnel"

I have the feeling that, since i just updated "The tale of Darth Vader´s Son", there will be a new chapter to this story soon.

Sorry, that this takes so long, but matters of real life are demanding my attention, it is not easy to properly write a meeting of titans and i´m working on a surprise for the last part of the coming chapter.
If we are lucky i´m done with the next part tomorrow evening, if not we have to wait till wednesday.
See you.

My apologies for being more than a week late, but as already said, it is not easy to write about a meeting of titans. And even when not, for some reason to write the updates of this story is always a pain in the rear, if you know, what i mean.
That said and done, i want to thank you for your patience.
And now: On with the story!
The Colliding of Empires
"The main corridor was filled with courtiers, all awaiting an audience with the Emperor. Vader curled his lip at them - fools all. Pompous toadys in their velvet robes and painted faces; perfumed bishops passing notes and passing judgements among themselves - for who else cared; oily flavour-merchants, bent low with jewelry still warm from a previous owner's dying flesh; easy, violent men and women, lusting to be tampered with.
Vader had no patience for such petty filth. He passed them without a nod, though many would have paid dearly for a felicitous glance from the high Dark Lord." from the RotJ-novel.
"The Emperor acknowledges that he alone cannot run the galaxy. He needs advisors. Secure in the knowledge that an Empire founded through treachery cannot be run through trust, he has surrounded himself with advisors who owe all of their political gains to the Emperor. He has made sure that each advisor has more enemies than allies among the other advisors. Fear and greed serve to bind each advisor to the Emperor."
"Advisors have taken to dressing in costumes derived from the histories of their home systems, drawn from the greatest empires of their pasts. Unlike the Emperor, many of the advisors wear lavish costumes as conspicuous badges of their status." from the ImperialSourcebook.
Perry Rhodan:
"Perry Rhodan, elected Grandadministrator by the people of the SolarEmpire, Atlan Mascaren da Gonozal, ruling Lordadmiral of the UnitedStarsOrganisation and entourage."
The large door opened and we entered a hall big enough to house a light cruiser, at least as far as wide and lenght were concerned.
I was still wondering, why there hadn´t been the sound of a large staff being beaten against the floor when i remembered, where i was. Twohundredfourtyfour million lightyears away from home, in a galaxy, that wasn´t my own and about to meet the ruler of the same. It was a comforting thought, that the heralds of the GalacticEmpire didn´t use heavy stuffs to announce their presence and to request attention, but once again i had to wonder about the similarities between the humans of this galaxy and those descendant of my own world. Such a parallel development wasn´t possible, so there had to be another explenation and, given our past experiences, i was worried, what answer to this question was waiting to hit us in the face.
Looking over the assembled people, who were - depending on distance, interest or position - watching, staring or ignoring us, i realized, that i didn´t have my priorities right. My mind was busy thinking about a problem, that was without a doubt interesting, but of minor importance at the moment.
What was important was my meeting with Emperor Palpatine.
I had met with a lot of leaders and rulers of states during my more than sixhundred years of life.
Weak leaders like Orcast XXI of Arkon or Queen Jinguiseem from M87. Strong and self-confident leaders like Talamon the superheavy, Oof, speaker of the terrorworms or Grek-1 the Maahk, who had once lead an invasion of the milkyway at the command of the "Masters of the Island". Well-meaning personalities like Eynoch Zygleer or the cosmic engineer Kalak. Malevolent leaders like Chappuy-Kitos or the Robotregent.
And, of course, the worst of them all, the "Masters of the Island", seven tyrants of lemurian and with that human origin, who had oppressed the entire Andromeda-galaxy for nearly twenty-thousand years. Hadn´t i known about the possible dephts of human depravity before, i would have after the six years of war against them.
My friend Reginal Bull, who had been among the first to met one of the "Masters" had later confessed to me, that he had always thought them to be some kind of monster and how big his surprise had been, when Regnal-Otron had been revealed to be a human. Of course this had been because the "Masters of the Island" had been, like terrans, akons, arkonids, tefrodans and hundreds of other people, descendants of the lemurians, the first mankind, which had been destroyed and scattered over two galaxies during the war with the halutans.
The most frightening thing about the seven despots had been how similar they were to us. More so, since they had been wearing cell-activators and had therefor been immortal. Just like me and my friends. Not that it had been of use to them in the end, since a cell-activator stops the aging-process, gives his wearer improved healing-abilities and neutralizes most poisons, but is unable to protect against deadly blaser-shots, knifes and other lethal injuries.
With the knowledge about the similarities between us had come the realisation how small the gap was, that seperated me from them. The step to take to become like them was smaller, than i ever wanted, but had to admit.
And now i was going to face a man in a similar position. Like me Palpatine was a man, who was master of his own destiny. Like me, he was a man, who had taken a broken and divided world and changed it according to his designs. But while i had been confined to a single planet, Palpatine´s world had encompassed an entire galaxy. It was questionable, if i would have been able to do the same in his place and that was something, that concerned me. There was of course the possibility, that Palpatine was nothing more but a puppet, controlled by unseen masters, but i was sure, that this possibility could be ignored. Men like Darth Vader don´t bow to puppets.
Thinking about it, my last thoughts were wrong. With the resources available to me i COULD have done the same as Palpatine and united the milkyway. It would have just been a question of force applied. Military force. I had the resources and, more important, the faith of the people. By now i had been Grandadministrator for more than five centuries, and, since everything had went well, stayed in that position for election, for election, for election. I probabely could change the working of the government the way i liked it until it would be too late and i would be the sole, unopposed ruler of the SolarEmpire with dictatorial powers and the majority of the population wouldn´t even mind. At least in the beginning.
There are still (or again?) enough people, who are willing to believe, that we terrans are superior to the other species of the galaxy. Wasn´t our quick ascent to the top as supreme military and economic power the best proof for that? And wasn´t it obvious, that a vast and growing interstellar empire could sooner or later only be effectively governed by a dictatorship? Of course those people had never lived under a dictatorship. They had never seen the antrocities commited by totalitarian regimes. For them the times of Hitler, Stalin or Mao were as much in the distant past as the crusades had been for me in my youth. Those people also ignored the fact, that we are superior to anybody else, because the rest of the milkyway is hopelessly divided. Something that would probabely change with a common enemy, like a suddenly oppressive SolarEmpire.
No, as long as i am Grandadministrator the SolarEmpire will try to be friends or at least partners with everybody else, will slowly, but steadily increase its influence and will keep to its own business. At least officially. Because a lot of things belong to the business of a major galactic power and not all of them can be resolved in the open. More, than one would like at times.
A man needs guts like terkonit-steel to deal with all of these issues.
Emperor Palpatine looks like anything but terkonit-steel.
To my great surprise i´m suddenly face to face with a man of medium height and build, who looks like a kind grandfather. White hair that is reciding at the forehead is framing a soft, almost gentle face, that is dominated by a lean, beak-like nose and a strong chin. Compared to some of the other dignitaries present he wears a plain robe of darkblue colour, with a brooch as sole ornament. Taking a second look i notice, that the writings on the breastpin resemble those on the outer walls of the imperial palace. Interesting.
To tell the truth, for a moment i feel disappointed. Somehow i had been expecting a physical resemblance to the power the man wields, in the way he carries himself or how he moves his head. The body betraying, what kind of mind controlled it. It is no coincidence, that i remembered some of the more prominent leaders i´ve met, somehow they all had given away, what kind of person they had been before the first few words had been exchanged.
But nothing of that here.
Until i´m able to get a second look into Palpatine´s eyes.
My first impression was, that they are somehow clouded, as if the man is deeply tired, but now, now i´m not so sure. Suddenly i´m reminded of a lizard or a spider. The expression of those predators is similar, when they are waiting fo their prey to make a wrong move. I also realize, that another person i know looks like this, when he is waiting for a carefully crafted sheme to succeed and for an opponent to trap himself without a chance for escape.
Atlan.
Over the course of tenthousand years on earth, not to mention his time as a member of the imperial court of his uncle emperor Gonozal VII as well as his own time as ruler of the empire of Arkon my friend has learned the art of deception, of hypocrisy to the point of mastership. Not that this makes him a bad person, its just a skill he developed over time. We once had a conversation about this, where he accused me of being worse than him in that regard, because i was able to hatch equally sinister shemes, but was still thinking of myself as a nice guy.
Considering all of this, i´m forced to correct my first impression of this man. Palpatine might appear like a kind, old man, but this appearence of weakness is nothing, but a disguise for a very clever mind, that is also armed with will-power and patience.
All of this takes less than a second, but during this short frame of time the emperor of this galaxy has risen several steps in my assessment as potential enemy or friend.
Then he starts to speak.
----
Sate Pestage observed nervously how the group of terrans approached his master.
He didn´t know why, but suddenly he was reminded of some of the holovids he had seen in his youth. Those had been a certain type of holovids, which had always been based on tales or legends from the time before the formation of the GalacticRepublic and they had always contained the clash of two cultures. The first usually an imperialistic, but also sophisticated and civilisated culture, the other group could be described as the noble savages, the honorable barbarians.
As an educated and intelligent person Sate Pestage had known, that the intention of those holovids had been to point an accusing finger at the spreading corruption and decadence of the Old Republic and that there was no such thing as a noble savage, but he had understood the message.
And now, after more than fifty years, the barbarians had finally arrived in reality.
Perry Rhodan and Atlan, without a doubt the leading persons of their guests, were both tall men with athletic figures, each one of them more than six feet tall and with broad shoulders. On first sight the arkonid was the more impressive figure of the two, the Grandwezir didn´t know, who or what a viking was, but if he had known the term, it would have been the one he would have used. A viking with redgolden eyes. Perry Rhodan could have been his mirror-image, if not for his short, brownblond hair, his keen grey eyes and the sharp edges of his lean face, that betrayed the fact, that he was even a little broader at the shoulders, than Atlan.
As impressive as they were, they were dwarfed by the two figures following them: Takor Kasom and Iwan-Iwanowitsch Goratschin. The ertrusan with his - except for a narrow stripe of hair - bold head measured more than two-and-a-half meter and his shoulders were more than two meters wide. Yet he moved with the grace of a dancer or a large feline. He would have probabely attracted the most interest of the assembled crowd, if not for the fact, that his compagnion carried two heads on his broad shoulders. Two. That was almost enough to overlook the green-scaled skin. What a monster.
Compared to those four, the rest of the terran entourage looked almost ordinary, but still in better shape than most of the imperial dignitaries assembled. Pestage wanted to blame this on the fact, that most of the terran entourage belonged to some kind of military personal, but he felt still embarressed. Aside from the emperor himself, his guards and the members of the imperial military the terrans stood out in this sea of rich, ornamented robes worn by parfumed bishops, jewel-ornamented merchants and bootlicking courtiers, because of their modest appearance in combination with their self-confident attitude.
They didn´t belonged here. They didn´t belonged into this crowd, whose - perhaps with exception of the merchants - members owned their power and influence to Palpatine, if they had any. They didn´t belonged into the imperial palace with its petty shemes and intrigues for the emperor´s favour, that were of no consequences for the galaxy outside Coruscant, since it didn´t matter for the people of the empire, who executed Palpatine´s will. They weren´t part of this court, that was just another mask used by his master to disguise the true nature of his empire.
They were intruders from another world, a real world and Pestage felt, no, knew, that the contact of a faked world with reality would always lead to the destruction of the artificial one.
He watched how the Grandadministrator Perry Rhodan finally reached the emperor and shook his head. What had he been thinking? The imperial court was as real as the marble below his feet, if not more real, since it was here, where the fate of an entire galaxy was decided. It wasn´t a fake and it wasn´t going to be destroyed. Perhaps he was simply tired.
----
Lieutenant Anderson was hardpressed not to gawk.
For a young man from Terra with only little experience - evil tongues would call him "naive" - the sight of Coruscant had been like a cold shower, since it was clear evidence, that Terra wasn´t the navel of the universe.
At the current stage of its history the motherplanet of all humans of the milkyway housed twenty-five billion citicens, while a single city-block on Coruscant contained probabely more people. The skyscrapers on the capital planet of this galaxy had an average height of two kilometers, for terran conditions eighthundred meters were enough.
Thanks to an accident of extra-terrestical visitors on one side and Perry Rhodan´s skill on the other side the terran line of humanity had been able to travel to the stars a hundred, perhaps thousand generations before their time. Otherwise the population would have grown much more and to much larger numbers before the terrans would have had access to other worlds. However the access to extra-terrestrical technology had allowed the raise of the world-wide living-standard on equal levels, what had resulted in a reduction of the birth-rate in the poorer countries. The slower growth of population had been accompanied by a large colonisation-program (that was still going on) and so the it had taken sixhundred years for the number of people on Terra to climb from four billion people to twenty-five.
Hardly a city-block on Coruscant and Coruscant certainly wasn´t the only planet like this in this galaxy.
On the other side this GalacticEmpire seemed to be vastly undermilitarized for its supposed size. Three-hundred warhips as defense of their capital system and the sixteen biggest of them barely larger than a fivehundred meter cruiser. With exception of this super-dreadnought, of course. The robotregent of Arkon, the Blues, as well as Posbis and Maahks would have laughed their butts of. Well, at least the Blues, since the robotregent and the Posbis were machines and the Maahks didn´t laugh. That thought offered a little console to the young Lieutenant.
Another reason for the awe of the young man from Terra was the wealth displayed. In the milkyway-galaxy only the members of the decadent nobility of Arkon or very wealthy Jumpers bragged with their fortune that way. With the ascent of the SolarEmpire to the position as major galactic power and especially the attitude of its leading people to display modesty and retention such kinds of showing-off had largely become a sign of bad style.
It was another reminder for the young Lieutenant Anderson, that he was far away from home. Different places, different customs.
Or could it be ... ?
A quick turn of the head and Anderson had confirmed, that the red-cladded guards had followed the terran entourage into the hall and were now moving along the wall, while their group was walking straight towards the centre of the room. The way they were dressed they were as suspicious as a dog on a mess of cat-cultivators. What was usually a disadvantage for a bodyguard. In some ways they reminded the young Lieutenant of the Swiss Guard of the Vatican. No, the purpose of those ceremonial guards was probabely to intimidate those easily intimidated and to look good, while the real agents and protectors of the emperor´s life were spread throughout the assembled crowd, cleverly disguised as merchants, tourists, servants or female eye-candy, their accesoirs of weapons, shield-generators, med-kits and so on cloaked as necklaces, rings, belt-buckles and only Rhodan might knew what else.
SolarCounterIntelligence and the SecurityCommandGrandadministrator worked this way, after all, so why not the people of this galaxy, too?
Confident, that he was on the right trail the young Lieutenant looked over the crowd, trying to identify hidden members of the local security forces - and Rhodan had ordered them to keep their eyes open, right? - until his eyes came to rest on the lithe shape of a young woman with golden-red hair and an intense fire burning in her green eyes. Curious Anderson tried to get a closer look.
Compared to some of the other people assembled she was plainly dressed, with just a decent hint of make-up and not to much jewelery. Yet she still looked better, than most of the other persons present. The small movements she made were executed with a feline grace, what made her even more outstanding in this crowd. Suddenly their eyes met and Anderson gave the woman an embarressed smile. The redhead smiled back, but it was more a twitching of the mouth, than a genuine smile. The young Lieutenant was saved by the massive form of a courtier, that moved between him and the predatory female.
When the man was gone, so was the woman.
Lieutenant Anderson tried to find her again, but now the group from Terra had reached the position, where Palapatine was waiting for them and the young officer had to concentrate on other things.
---
His arms spread out in an open, friendly gesture Emperor Palpatine of the GalacticEmpire welcomed the visitors at his court, that claimed to come from another galaxy.
"Perry Rhodan! It was a long wait, but finally you and your companions are here. I´ve heard so much about you and now we met personally. Welcome to Coruscant and on behalf of the GalacticEmpire. Let me express my hope, that this evening will be the beginning of a long and fruitful friendship for the benefit of both our people."
The Grandadministrator of the SolarEmpire accepted the greeting with a polite nod.
"Your Highness, i bring with me the greetings of the citicens of the SolarEmpire and Milkyway-Galaxy as well as an offer of friendship. I, too, share those hopes you have for a peaceful and prosperous future for our people and want to thank you for the warm welcome."
"I am the one, who has to be grateful. As i have heard it was largely your contribution to the evacuation of Tholaris IV, that turned the entire operation into a success. Without you five million of our citicens would be dead by now."
"Even if we wouldn´t have been able to save them all, we would have tried our best. It was an obligation of humanity." was Perry Rhodan´s polite answer. Given his humanistic believes and optimistic nature, the terms "human" and "humanity" weren´t limited to a single species for the Grandadministrator.
"Yes, yes." agreed Palpatine, who didn´t knew that. "As human beings we have to watch out and take care of each other. You have to excuse my curiosity, but especially the devices you used for the evacuation, what were they called... transmitters, cought my interest."
"I wouldn´t have thought, that somebody in your positon would be so interested in technologies." stated Atlan.
Palpatine gave the arkonid a small smile. "You have no idea, what i´m all interested in, Lordadmiral. Have to be. I´m really eager to learn more about you and your empire. Knowledge about each other is the key to understanding each other, after all."
"And the key to power." thought the Lordadmiral dry, but was polite enough to keep that thought to himself. He had studied machivellian wisdom long before the man himself had been born. Aloud he said. "Very true, your Highness. But the best knowledge is nothing, if it lacks practical use."
"There might be people, who would disagree with you, Lordadmiral." Darth Vader, who had remained silent until now pointed out. "They would argue, that the knowledge for the sake of knowledge is reward enough."
"My apologies. That was the pragmatic heritage of my people speaking."
"You don´t have to apologize, Lordadmiral. I´m sure, that a pragmatic person like you knows about the necessity to keep an open mind and that there is always something new to learn."
"Well, i´m confident, that we can all learn a lot from each other. And with enough time and good will, we will also discover practical applications to profit from what we have learned." Rhodan generously ignored the suddenly pointed ears of the people around, when he voiced the word "profit".
"I share this confidance, my friend." stated Palpatine with a smile at the Grandadministrator. "However i doubt, that we´ll be able to go into such practical details on an evening like this. After all this is a first meeting to get to know each other."
"In that case our small group should better split up to give your and our people the opportunity to - how did you say - get to know each other." suggested Atlan.
"And give everybody opportunity to enjoy the buffet. I only hope our cuisine is to your liking."
And so it happened.
----
Almost an hour had passed. As suggested by Atlan the terran entourage had split and its members had mixed themself among the crowd of courtiers and guests assembled.
Rhodan and Atlan had stayed together with Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine and continued with their conversation.
Takor Kasom devoted his enite attention to the buffet, where he tried to get as much food for himself without looking impolite.
Colonel Fuller, who was the second-in-command of the groundtroops of the "Dante´s Inferno" had meet with General Veers and the two officers were soon engaged in a heated discussion about the tactics and strategies on the ground.
Captain Rado was talking to an imperial Baron and Commander of the empires starfighter-corps. To the great surprise of the Captain Sontir Fel had shown himself to be very interested, when the Captain had mentioned, that he had grown up on a farm in Iowa and now the two men were talking about crops, fertilizers and the charms of a rural life.
Ivan-Ivanowitch Goratschin had found himself in a conversation with a representant of KuatDriveYards, who wanted to know more about the economy of the milkyway and a man in a white uniform, who had introduced himself as Grandadmiral Ishin Il-Raz. While the right head of the double-headed mutant was talking to the merchant, the left one answered the questions of Il-Raz about the milkyway humans.
The telepath John Marshall was calmly walking through the crowd, tried to evade getting drawn into longer conversations and made short scans into the thoughts of the people assembled. Not everything he discovered was to his liking, but he was to much of a professional to show it.
The Lieutenants Stover, Anderson, Allen and Denning stood together and felt out of place. Compared to everybody else they were to low in rank to be of interest to anybody of the imperials until Captain Radu and Baron Fel took notice of their misery. With the help of Fel´s wife, who was a prominent actress they four young men were quickly teamed up with members of Coruscants upper class.
Then the gifts of the terrans were brought into the room.

Like this story, as long as you won't let the Empire look inferior (meaning no Perryverse-arrogance please)or stupid.
I have there some questions to you:
By the way, please can you avoid the EU minimalism? You know, this whole bullshit with 25.000 ISD's. Because a realistic number is at least several million ISD's, if not much more, plus the countless other ships.
I like that you thought about the other ships of the Empire as well, hope you will get the numbers right.
I hope you not use this whole "SuperStardestoyer" thing for ships like the Executor. These ships are called "Commandships" (ROTJ)
By the way, the thoughts of Anderson concerning the Red Guards are wrong, but he can't know that. They are rather deadly fighters with a lot of hidden weapons, with thier uniform only to let people THINK that they were not good fighters.
Seen in Crimson Empire, the training is extremly brutal, and only 10% of all trained actually really become red guards. They are some of the best there is.
The way the Rodanverse-Chars. made fun of Coruscants defenses, they don't know of the planetary shield. They of course can't see the full picture when not knowing of the shield.
Has the Roadanverse soemtihng compareable to a planetary shield? If not, you could let comment them about it.
There is something, that could be important. At the time of ROTJ, two ADDITIONAL Death Stars, the size of the original one (160 km) were built in the Coruscant system (but not Coruscant itself). Will this play a role in your story? (Originally after the Endor debacle, they were dismantled, but here.....)

Thank you for your comments and the fact, that you share your ideas and concerns with me. They are partly the same i have and i´ll try to deal with them as best as possible.

Difficult, since most of the Perryverse-technology is superior to imperial equipment. The only real advantage they have is their size and industrial infrastructure. As for not making them look stupid, i´ll try my very best, but since the empire is the force of evil, it has to lose.

Don´t hesitate, just ask.

When i work on a fanfic i usually have a number of 30-40 million ships for the empire at its height in my mind, of those 200,000 to 250,000 would be ISDs and 15,000 ships would be even bigger. From the industrial base the empire could have billions of ISDs, but if you ask me, there is no need for that. The empire had no real outside enemy, many, if not most of the coreworlds (= worlds with full planetary shields) were members of the empire on their own free will and for a colony-world an ISD should be enough. Aside from that, the empire isn´t old enough to have a manpower-pool large enough for such a large fleet.

I´ll only call them Super Star Destroyer, when the shown point-of-view belongs to a rebel. Promised.

I know that. The Swiss Guard of the Vatican isn´t for show, too, despite the uniforms designed by Michelangelo. As already said Anderson is naive and inexperienced. However a person can be smart and still come to wrong conclusions. Anderson´s part was to ensure, that the PR-fraction doesn´t look superior to the SW-fraction and to outbalance the cleverness of Rhodan and Atlan. After 600, respectively 10,000 years of life it takes a lot to fool one of those two.

They didn´t make fun of Coruscant´s defenses, they simply compared them to what they know from home. And - minimalism or not - what i have given the empire here is a lot more, than it has ever had in the EU.
Planetary shields are well-known in the Rhodanverse. There are also shields, that protect entire starsystems, a timeshield, that was used to hide the sol-system five minutes in the future and in more than one case shields or forcefields, that seperated entire galaxies from the rest of the universe. However the last two (time-field and galaxy-wide one) appeared only later in the PR-timeline and the galactic ones were used by non-terran powers. Aside from that the ray- and particle-shields don´t work against transform-cannons. Ordinary 3d-shields are useless against those weapons, something that has been stated time and again in official PR-literature. In that regard they are vastly different from, lets say, a StarTrek-transporter.
Don´t worry, if necessary i´ll come up with something to outbalance this in favour of SW.

There is something, that could be important. At the time of ROTJ, two ADDITIONAL Death Stars, the size of the original one (160 km) were built in the Coruscant system (but not Coruscant itself). Will this play a role in your story? (Originally after the Endor debacle, they were dismantled, but here.....) [/quote]
As far as i know, those two were only concept-art for the ROTJ-battle. I won´t use them in this story, since that would spoil the fun about the DeathStar, but perhaps they´ll appear in "The tale of Darth Vader´s Son".
