Sorry, that this is only a small update, but strucure-wise its the only way it makes sense. Be prepared for a large cliff-hanger at the end.

Another reason for this to be so short is the fact, that i´m currently reading the first two books of John Ringo´s Posleenvers. They´re awesome, if you´re interested in military scifi.

Every SW-author and editor, whose name IS NOT Zahn, Denning, Stover or Luceno should read a piece of those. That is the right way to make good books, not what those f...ers, who want to turn SW in their version of "TinyToons" do.

The Colliding of Empires

One of the doors to the huge hall had opened and four of the crimson-cladded guards carried a large table under the curious looks of the people assembled inside. The number of awed and exited "ahs" and "ohs" at the sight of terra´s treasures was limited, what caused a lot of disappointment for the young Lieutenants, while the older and more experienced members of Rhodan´s and Atlan´s entourage had expected nothing else. It was more of a symbolic gesture and not intended as a display or - god prevent that - as bragging about ones wealth.

Perry Rhodan himself, who in private had more than once associated the entire procedure either with the delivering of tribute to the conquerors or with glas-pearls for the primitives, would have ordered the cermony abandoned, but the galacto-psychologists, who councilled the DiplomaticCorps and the SolarFleet on first contacts with alien lifeforms insisted on the benefits of it. And while it was impossible to quantify those claimed benefits, until now no harm had been done and so most ships of Solar and ExplorerFleet carried otherwise useless stuff aboard.

"My friend, if seems your gifts have finally passed our safety-checks." commented Palpatine.

"Concerning the time your people took, it must have been a very thorough one." answered Atlan.

Contrary to Rhodan the ten-thousand year old arkonide had no emotional problems with the delivering of gifts to new and alien species. He had done this at more opportunities than he could count, since it had been one of the standard-procedures when the arkonides of old had made contact with the technologically less developed people of worlds, that would sooner or later enjoy the protection of the ArkonEmpire (if they wanted it or not). It also reminded him of the exiting voyages on earth, when he had been stranded on the planet, his journeys with the father and uncle of Marco Polo or aboard the flagship of the chinese admiral Zheng Hu, whose fleet had nearly travelled around the entire world.

"Yes, they are very professional and i expect nothing less from my personal guards. They would die for me." stated Palpatine with pride.

"I have to congragulate you on them." said Rhodan, who wondered at Palpatines last sentence, if the royal guards were just very well trained, brainwashed or for some reason especially fanatical. Until now nothing indicated, that the somehow grandfatherly Palpatine was able to inspire such loyality, but the Grandadministrator knew all to well how apperances could be decepting.

"They are the ones to recieve concragulations." answered the emperor. "It is a long and demanding way for a young man to qualify himself as one of my royal guards. A long way with many sacrifices." he hesitated for a moment, as if in deep thought. "Why don´t we take a closer look so i can admire your gifts myself, now that my security-deparment already had the pleasure?"

Accompanied by Darth Vader the three men walked over to the desk on which the treasures of the SolarEmpire were laid out for presentation: a large plate of platin, that showed a map of earth´s continents and oceans in relief-form, ornamented with rubies, where the large cities would have been, a quadrupel of foot-high statues made of jade, bronze, silver and gold, a chuckoo-clock from Germany´s BlackForrest and two wonderfully crafted swords, made by spanish or italien (Rhodan had forgotten by whom) swordsmiths during the 16th century.

"Wonderful." stated Palpatine with polite enthusiasm, knowing very well, that the objects displayed wouldn´t stand out among all the other things he kept inside his own personal treasure-chambers. He picked up one of the swords. "Especially a weapon like this one." His head turned to Rhodan. "An interesting choice for a gift, my friend."

"The idea is a well-balanced presentation of culture," Rhodan pointed at the plate,"the aquisation of wealth through work," his hand moved over the statues, "ingenuity", reached the chuckoo-clock "and strenght." Finally the Grandadministrator stopped over the place, where the two swords had been laying. "It is also meant as a sign of peaceful intentions. You´re not going to attack a person, whom you have given your weapon."

"Not everybody might understand it that way. In some cultures the sending of a weapon is considered as an insult, a challange or an order to commit suicide." rumbled Darth Vader, who had been silent until now.

"Well, i would think, that other weapons would be better suited to commit suicide, than such a wondeful blade." stated Palpatine, who was still admiring the sword. "In any case, it is an interesting choice of weapon. Why not a dagger or a pistol?"

"Daggers are often associated with assassins and pistols lack the charme of a good sword." explained Atlan, picking up the other blade and moving it through the air with skilled hand.

"A civilized weapon for civilized times." added Rhodan.

That statement caused Palpatine to give Rhodan a questioning look. "Really?" he asked. "So i and my people, who use turbolasers and blasters are not civilisated in your eyes?"

"Of course not." hurried the Grandadministrator to explain. "The same would be true for us, since we use long-range and energy-weapons, too. What i wanted to say was, that it is much more personal, if you have to fight your enemy face to face and not over a distance, where he is only a target. The idea is, that it is much more difficult to kill or to start a war, if you recognize your opponent as a sentient, living being."

"An interesting concept." mused Palpatine. "However, given my experiences with human nature, i doubt, that it ever worked on a larger scale."

"Unfortunately, you´re right." admitted Rhodan. "When man needed a reason to kill man, he always found one. Perhaps it is just a longing for the "happy" times."

"I beg your pardon?"

"My apologizes for my friends unclear words." stated Atlan. "Despite everything he has seen, he is still an idealist at heart. So don´t be surprised, if his romantic side shows itself now and then. "Happy times" refers to ages gone a long time ago, when things for reasons unknown were supposed to be easier, where men were still men, women were women and every problem was solved with a sword."

Atlan suddenly realized, that he had fallen back into the easy banter he always used, when he was teasing Rhodan. It was one of the small, likable eccentries of their friendship. What caused the ten-thousand year old arkonid to wonder was, what guesses emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader would made about their visitors. "It might be helpful on a later occasion, if we aren´t easy to see through." decided Atlan after giving some thought to the matter.

A grunt, that might have been a sign of amusement came from Darth Vader and caused the arkonid to stop his musings.

"I thought as much." he rumbled. "You admire this sword for what it is, what it could have been a symbol for, but never has been thanks to the failings of mere mortals and since you are unable to wield it properly you give it away as a symbol of strenght."

"I´m not sure, if i can follow you, Lord Vader."

Vader held up his lightsaber. Igniting the crimson blade he explained. "Lightsabers like this were once the symbol of the Jedi-Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, but did the existance of lightsabers prevent this institution, that governed our galaxy for millenia, protect it from the corruption and inefficency, which destroyed it from within? Of course not, just like the lightsaber of the Jedi was just a tool depending on its wielders will, so is this sword nothing but a piece of metal. A beautiful and masterfully crafted one, but nothing more. Its proper use demand skill, exercise and experience otherwise it is useless."

"I don´t doubt that. What i fail to see is, why you seem to be angry." asked Rhodan, although he had a slight suspicion about where the journey was going.

"Annoyed would be a better term, Grandadministrator. What else, but contempt can a man feel, who has spent years of his life with the efforts to achive mastership of such a weapon, when he sees the fools, who think, that wearing a sword makes them into something they aren´t and never will be. Clowns, who ornamente themself with weapons, which they would only use to cut their own feet off with? Wearing a sword doesn´t make you a swordsman and the attitude to pretend to be one is an insult to those who are and the men, who created their weapons."

"You have to forgive the Lord Vader for his undiplomatic words." stated Palpatine with a soft laughter. "He is a warrior at heart, a great leader of men in battle, but less suited for the more complicated issues of the court and the politics of the empire."

"On the contrary, it is always refreshing to hear somebody speak his mind so clearly." answered Perry Rhodan. "Isn´t it, Atlan?"

"Yes, it is. And concerning the reason for your annoyance, Lord Vader, i´m always willing to convince you of the opposite." stated the ten-thousand year old arkonide.

For a short moment Darth Vader was at a loss for words.

How had he gotten into this situation?

His former self Anakin Skywalker had been a man of action, not somebody who talked or thought a lot, a character-trait that, to tell the truth, had gotten the young man into more trouble than necessary. Only as Darth Vader had he finally learned to achive a balance of thought, talk and doing, but not because Palpatine had been a better teacher, but because of the old man´s ways to show his disappointment. Being around his master was like walking through a minefield, no, like walking on the edge of a sword and one wrong step ... . Darth Vader had very well understood the hidden warning aimed at him during the last words of the emperor. The explenations of the empires extra-galactic visitors about their gifts had awoken long forgotten memories of his time with the Jedi-Order, the ridicilous ideas, that masked the emptiness of his old teachers ideals and symbolism. It certainly hadn´t been the terrans intention, but to Vader they had appeared self-rightous and supercilious and he had wanted to pull them down from the high hourse they had been sitting on.

And now it looked, as if Atlan had just challenged him to a fight. Certainly the man wasn´t serious.

"Everytime i want, just not here and now." the Dark Lord of the Sith mocked and had the satisfaction to see the face of Atlan harden. It would be interesting to see, how the arkonid would back out.

"Every time you want, even here and now," Atlan made a small bow towards Palpatine, "if his Imperial Majesty agrees, of course."

"Atlan, wait a moment." protested Rhodan, already seeing Vader humiliated and the diplomatic relations to the GalacticEmpire in shambles. "You´re not going ... ."

"A duel." mused Palpatine, carefully hiding his interest. "Well, it would be a nice change from the usual entertainment-program. Are you sure you want this, Lord Vader?" It was a rhetorical question.

"Yes, i do." stated the Dark Lord, knowing, that Palpatine could order him to do so and that he would lose a lot of face in this rancor-pit, that was the imperial court, if he backed down now.

"Then it is settled." The emperor turned towards Rhodan. "Unless you want to order your friend back."

The Grandadministrator shot a glare towards his friend, that would have melted terkonit and possibly even SAC-steel. "I know what Lordadmiral Atlan is capable of and i have the utmost faith in his abilities. If he wants to fight, i won´t hold him back."

Perhaps he thinks that Atlan is arrogant. But I would like to see him as the winner. 10000 years of experience are of much more worth than the force

What is the best swordmanship compared to a opponent who can see your moves actually before you do them?

Let Vader show the Terrans, what the power of the force is!

First, a warm welcome to Barbarrossa-Rotbart.

May i ask, if you named yourself after the german emperor or the pirates from Tunis?

Considering the mind-stabilisation, if that could have an impact Jedi would be more or less helpless against droids (who don´t think in the classical sense).

However precognition isn´t everything, especially if you want to go into the offense (where you have to be the one who acts, and the other one re-acts) and as a third, precognition is fine, but you still need time to execute the moves with your limbs, what will take time.

However, i´m not going to the PR-faction a favour and show Vader in the coming duel as movie-Vader.

Don´t worry.

You may. The german emperor was the one. Barbarossa (italian) means Rotbart in german which means red beard in english.

I forgot, how easily a Jedi could destroy a droid.

But if Vader and Atlan fight with normal swords or sabres (no vibroblades and lightsabres), Atlan's experience would give him an edge.
