I'm already working on the next part, but I was sick for a week and also have a lot of catching up to do on the job because of it. Sorry, but real life comes first.

And yes, it looks like we need a ZA to see the end of this story. happy

Well, get out of your stasis-boxes, because here is the next part.

The Colliding of Empires

Silence filled the room with everybody waiting for their emperor to explain his newest sheme. It was a competition between those high and mighty of the GalacticEmpire, where the one asking for details first had lost. Not that most of them were aware of it on a conscious level. It was one of the many power-games, which were played constantly at the Imperial Court.

Finally Ishin-Ill Raz couldn't stand the tense silence any longer.

"And what, Your Majesty, is your new design for the rebels?"

"A multi-layered attack on their bases, major shipyard, their leadership and of course their morale. We might not get the bulk of their military forces, but if this plan succeeds the Rebel-Alliance will break apart without a chance at recovery for years." Palpatine explained with a calm voice, forming a strong contrast against the bombastic and pompous kind of Il-Raz.

"And once they recover - if they ever do - we'll have enough forces in every region of the galaxy, not to mention a fully operational DeathStar." Darth Vader thought. "If this plan succeeds." Aloud he said. "Forgive me, my Master, but one of the major problems we have in our fight against the rebels is, that we don't know where most of their bases are. The majority of them isn't larger than a few rooms and even if we find one we can't be sure, if it is even crewed and the largers ones are more or less constantly on the move."

A predatory smile appeared on Palpatine's lips, but it didn't reach the eyes.

"Forgive me, my friend, but it seems I wasn't very clear when I said "bases". I was not talking about the sector-commands, starfighter- or supply and manufacturing bases of the Rebellion. I'm talking about their safe worlds."

Safe worlds were the colonies of the Rebel-Alliance. Established deep in the galactic fringe, undiscovered by the Imperial Survey Corps and far away from all hyperspace lanes they housed the families of active rebels, sheltered injured and veteran soldiers too old to continue fighting and other opponents and dissidents of the Empire. Because of their - by comparison - recent set-up most of them were very primitive and the rebels kept it that way to avoid discovery by the Empire. In that regard safe worlds belonged to the countless uncharted settlements spread over the galaxy, that were of little interest to the Empire. Ships of the Imperial Survey Corps were able to detect signs of high-tech from outside a planetary system and systems with such technology were usually worth taxing. What meant, that sooner or later a planetary garrison would be stationed there. Considering this the safe worlds would have been of no interest to the Empire, if they didn't belong to the Rebellion and supported this movement of dissidents with what little they had.

"We also don't know, where their safe worlds are located." Vader rumbled. "We discovered a handful of them, but those were lucky circumstances."

"Or the good work of ImperialIntelligence." Palpatine said with a friendly bow to Ysanne Isard. "Mdm. Director, if you'd be so kind."

"Thank you, Your Majesty." Raising from her chair Ysanne Isard turned to face the other occupants of the room. "Gentlemen, as you all know it has been standard Imperial policy for a couple of years by now, that the local authorities are directly responsible for their territories and for dealing with sources of unrest and possible rebellion within their systems. We were forced to learn, that this isn't always the best way to solve problems. Despite our best efforts many of our Moffs lack the forces necessary to control their territories to a satisfying degree. Space is simply too vast for such a control. Consequently they concentrate on patrolling the important hyperlanes and guarding the major planets of their sectors. We tried to counter this problem with the creation of oversectors and while this step has allowed us to deal more effectively with local rebellions and planetary uprisings, it hasn't helped us in defeating the highly mobile Rebel-Alliance. The rebels consequently evade an open confrontation with our forces. One reason they do so successfully is the already mentioned vastness of space and the overstretched forces of our local governours in the outer rim. A second reason is the - lets call it more relaxed - approach to secrecy within the local militaries, which are not up to the standards of our elite forces or even the average soldiers within the core. An example: A scouting mission has discovered a possible rebel-base and the local Moff gives the order to sent a squadron of ships to deal with the problem. The evening before this small fleet leaves its port a few spacers are on leave and because life in the fringe is hard and lonely they decide to visit a bar. There they get drunk and talkative, the walls have ears and the rebels get the few hours they need to pack their base together and leave."

"A scandal, if true." Il-Raz huffed. "Those soldiers and their superiors should get shot. Don't we have regulations for this kind of thing?"

"We have. But keeping the crews aboard their ships before they leave is also a kind of indicator, that something is up."

"Fine. Then don't sent a squadron of smaller ships, sent a star destroyer. An ISD is a city in itself, there is no reason for the crew to be on leave. And they carry enough consumables to NOT be port-bound."

"If we had enough star destroyers to investigate every small report our governors would also have enough forces to control their sectors. What they don't as already established." Vader explained patientely. No need to get enraged at Il-Raz stupidity, he told himself. He turned to Isard. "So what do you suggest, Director?"

But it was Palpatine, who answered.

"To draw forward an operation, that has been in the making for some time. The small, uncharted settlements of the rim have always annoyed me and I have decided, that the time has come to deal once and for all with them. If we hit a number of rebel safe-worlds while doing so, all the better."

"Considering how many uncharted settlements there are, we'd have to be extremly lucky to catch even one rebel-colony during the first wave. The rebels will know what is going on and attempt to evacuate their friends." Admiral Wermis pointed out.

"We won't need luck. We know the positions of several safe-worlds." Isard explained.

"And I wasn't made aware of that?" Darth Vader rumbled dangerously low. He stretched out a hand in a Force-choking gesture. "As SupremeCommander of all Imperial Forces it would have been your duty to inform me of your findings."

"Because she had explicit orders from me not to do so." Palpatine said. "We're launching an assault on every rebel-base as soon as it is discovered, but those successes are of minor consequence. While the local agents of ImperialIntelligence are supposed to report their findings not only to us, but also to the Moff responsible for the sector in this special case they have strict orders to only inform us. The reasons should be obvious: We have lured the rebels into a false sense of security, while we collected data for a concentrated strike against them."

"And you also managed to humble your SupremeCommander, who didn't came up with such an idea." Vader thought darkly. He wasn't interested in the civilians of the rebel-alliance, who were no danger. If they were willing to live in the wilderness of the galactic fringe instead of the comforts of the core, that was punishment enough. Then another thought occured to him. Maybe his obsession with the hunt for his son had prevented him from recognizing other possibilities or fullfilling the obligations expected from him and this was Palpatine's way of reminding him, that he wasn't, what he used to be. Aloud he said.

"A strike we don't have the forces to execute, my Emperor. Especially not if we have to deal with those invaders at the same time. We would have to expose ourself and ... ." Suddenly Darth Vader understood, why Tollan Wermis was on Coruscant. "My Emperor, this plan is very daring."

"Isn't it, my apprentice? But also a great opportunity. One justification for the military build-up has always been the defense against barbarian invaders from outside the galaxy. Now those invaders have appeared and countless worlds in the outer rim have fallen to their might within a few days. As the protector of peace and stability in the galaxy it is the obligation of the Empire to fight them and to liberate the worlds conquered by them."

"What better way to cause the population to rally behind you, Your Majesty." Il-Raz flattered. "Maybe our specialists from the Propaganda-office can even associate the rebels with this alien scum. "Rebel-Alliance actually fifth column of barbaric invaders." or something like that."

The sardonic smile appearing on Palpatine's face was all Vader needed to see to know, that his Master had already thought of that.

"Then it is settled. Admirals Wermis, Oextroe, Il-Raz; I'll expect you to free up the ships we need for this operation, without compromising our security within the core. Mdm. Isard will provide you with the locations of the safe-worlds of the rebels, while Lord Vader will concentrate on those invaders.

That would be all for now."

Dismissed the military officers left the briefing-room, leaving the two Sith-Lords behind.

"There is more to those invaders, Master, isn't it? Otherwise you could have sent one of the Grand Admirals to deal with them. Speaking of the Grand Admirals, why was Wermis representing Teshik?" Vader was aware, that Teshik had fallen somewhat out of favour with the Emperor, but the man was still a Grand Admiral and - contrary to Il-Raz - a worthy bearer of the title.

"Because the good Osvald has a new obligation. As I said at the beginning, we'll go after the bases of the rebels and their main shipyard. Until now we've covered only the bases. Osvald Teshik will go after the shipyard. But lets ignore Teshik for the moment. What do you think of Tollan Wermis. He served directly under you for some time on the Devastator, didn't he?"

"Actually that was his cousin. The Wermis are one of the old Anaxes-families. But Admiral Wermis is a competent officer."

"Competent enough to wear the white uniform?" Palpatine asked.

"You want to make him a Grand Admiral?" Vader asked back.

"Why not. With Zaarin dead and Tingellinus Grand Moff there are at least two vacaant places in the circle of twelve. Three once Teshik has done his job with MonCalamari."

Vader was silent for a moment. Since there was no rank Teshik could be promoted to, the only possible explenation for Palpatine's words was, that the Emperor intended to drop Teshik completely. Maybe as scapegoat for whatever unfortunate fate happened to the MonCal and their world. Obviously the Grand Admiral had fallen more out of favour, than Vader had been aware of.

"You ordered him to execute a BaseDeltaZero on the planet?" Vader tried to confirm.

"Yes I did. The MonCalamari will be punished for their treason and rebellion and the execution of Osvald Teshik will serve as a warning examples to the higher ranks of the Empire. It will show, that they are not above the law and can do as they please. You have a problem with that, Lord Vader?"

"No Master, of course not." Vader lied, while he thought of the more than twenty billion sentinent beings living on the water-world. He also thought of the decent and honorable man Palpatine was going to get rid off. And what he was going to do about it.

"Wermis certainly has the potential." he finally answered Palpatine's question. "Now why do I have to deal personally with those invaders?"

For a long time Palpatine was silent.

"They call themself the Ssi-Ruu." the Emperor finally started to explain. "Their native to one of the many star-clusters inside the unknown regions. As most races from that area they're rather primitive compared to us with one exception. A technology they call entechment. Basically a way to power and control droids and machinery through the Force. I was in secret negotiations with them, when the broke and suddenly they're invading my domain." The man, who had been Darth Sidious glared at his apprentice. "I want you to punish them for that. Drive them out of my empire, conquer their insignificant cluster, destroy their ships, level their cities and kill their leaders.

And get me that entechment-technology."

"As you wish, Master." Vader answered. "But perhaps in that case you can promote Admiral Piett to Grand Admiral, too. I will need more than DeathSquadron for such an operation and in that case my leading Admiral will need additional authority."

Again Palpatine didn't say a word, while he kept staring at Darth Vader, looking at future paths, weighing possibilities. Vader himself did his best to keep his thoughts to himself.

"So be it." the Emperor finally said. "And now that I think about it, perhaps we can kill a third rodent with the same stone."

"You mean Perry Rhodan?"

"Yes. We still need to know, what this ship of his is capable of. We also need to know, if he is somehow in league with the Ssi-Ruu." Palpatine smiled at his apprentice. "Why don't you invite him along? Observe the behavior of those terrans and the performance of their equipment and assess how much of a threat or an asset they can be."

"As you wish."

Excellent update. About time Piett got a true recognition of his skills and was promoted to Grand Admiral.

Just to inform you all: This story is NOT abandoned. Real life just doesn't leave me with any time at all. At the job we're doing the halfyear balance, ten of my relatives celebrate their birthdays during June/July and my sister is getting married.

Expect an update as soon as I have the time again.

Suddenly a Jawa appears next to FTeik threatening him with a very big gun and saying something we all cannot understand. But it is quite obvious what he wants: The next chapter of this great saga!
