I tried out the rotoscoping tutorial, and damn...doing lightsabers takes a loonnnggg time. Is there any faster way than taking it as a filmstrip into photoshop????

If you are doing the method with the gausian blurring and the imposing white blade over color and THEN over the frame, there is a faster way. Cover all the sabers in the scene (one saber per layer) then use the Effects -> Outter glow function. Works the best, so it seems. Q

Nah, I'm doing the Outer glow method. Its faster, I just apply the blur when I'm all finished. I'm rotoscoping in the lightsaber effects in PA Wars. Its good practice for people who haven't had any experience with rotoscoping. Plus, I don't have a capture card to capture any of my footage, yet. In Preimere, I simply selected the 2 minute and 30 second fight in PA Wars, then painted on the lightsabers in Photoshop (like I already said ). I'm a big perfectionist...so it took me around 3 hours to get about 25-35 seconds of the clip done! But the sabers look magnificent! 3 hours for 30 seconds? That's pretty fast, what frame rate was it. If you want a faster way, check out Axogon. -Lokmer

Well, I didn't time myself or anything Its an estimate at most. I believe the frame rate was 27.4

Oh, and I've downloaded Axogon, but haven't touched it. The interface reminds me of Flash 4. And I haven't touched it since I downloaded, don't quite get the features...and the help files are vague.

Re: Gotta be an faster way to do lightsabers

You've unmasked me!!!! no, not really. I just LOOVE good freeware and shareware. I try to live my life (at least where computers are concerned) by this axiom: Anything worth doing well is worth paying less for. I just can't see shelling out hundreds of dollars for software when you can get everything you need, and in some cases do it easier and better than the commercial competitors. I was all ready to shell out $2500 for premier and After Effects (I really didn't want to, but I didn't see another choice if I wanted my film to look good) and I decided to give the shareware universe one last whirl. I stumbled across the Axogon user's page and decided (grudgingly) to give it a try, just in case. Am I ever glad I did, saved myself $2500, a lot of time (since I don't have to do sabers in PS), and probably a big argument with my wife over how I'm spending our money. The problem with shareware and freeware of course, is that no matter how good it is it is usually poorly documented (Not very comprehensive help files and the like) particularly early on. I had great success with Axogon because of the tremendous help I received from other users, and I only feel it's fair to return the favor by helping anyone who needs it. But thanks for the compliment! -Lokmer

Does anyone know if there is a similar program to Axogon for the Mac? These lightsabars are taking forever. Thanks

I notice most tutorials for Photoshop recommend the use of the line tool for the core. I would argue it's better to use the versatile path tool - a single vector line for every blade. Then you have the option of not only applying a rounded airbrush/paintbrush stroke (instead of a flat line) for the core, but also you can set up an 'action' (like a script) that will brush your chosen glows and cores in one fell swoop... BTW Please don't criticise my below par rotoscoping in my soon-to-be-released film. It was a rush job... I've yet to try a method that may save me some time with Photoshop. The idea so far is to have the actors against a bluescreen, and have the sabres painted a very bright florescent (SP?) pink of green. I'd use the magic wand tool to select the sabre blades, right click them and "copy via layer" (puts them on their own layer) and apply a color fill and outer glow to the layer. Unfortunately, the magic wand tool can be unreliable, and it would require a great deal of proofreading (so to speak), but I'm sure it will save me some time.

WOW you were gonna pay $2500 for premiere and after effects?!?!? You can get Premiere w/several different firewire cards for under $400. You can even get it on ebay right now for around $50- see http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=334914720 http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=334914720 . Its fun to bargain hunt.

Oops, hit a 2 when I meant to hit a 1. It would have been $1500 for the AE Production bundle plus Premier with my academic discount. I could have bought the el cheapo versions of both for around a grand, but I figured that if I was going to do it I'd go whole hog instead of getting something I might outgrow and have to buy the full version anyway. I didn't need a firewire card, as only one of the 5 cameras I was using was digital it would have been an unnecessary expense to buy it just for the software it came with (and it would have come out costing about the same anyway).

Ok, Lokmer, I got a few questions. Right now, I am using axogon to export my movies into jpegs, and then editing them with paint shop pro 5. Is axogons sabers easier to make? I will post a pic of some sabers I've made soon. And another question, is can you still get those plugs(or whatever they are) that will let you import movies onto a computer using a non-DVC? If so, How much do they usually run for? Thanks. -Melvil
