[delurks again]
It appears that I started this delurking trend...
Don't worry, I'm not a stalker, just an interested reader and also a Rogue/Wraith fan. This story has great writing and an interesting plot, so even if it is an exercise in patience, I don't mind waiting for the next installment.
Looking forward to more. Flyboys and flygirls rule.

If Sephrenia invented delurking then i think we owe her royalties every time we use it. From now on ten percent of my proceeds from delurking shall go to her. It's the right thing to do.

RE: Last Chance: Myn and Lara -----> NEW POST: 04/30 <------
This post is dedicated to those Wraiths who keep delurking (or registering just so they can delurk) on this story... Obviously you lot would be Myn and Lara fans, as you act like wraiths: appearing and disappearing into thin air, staying just long enough to make an impact! Thanks for the reassurance that you guys aren't all one weird person, but in fact several.
It has been a trial of a time for me, but I have the next post ready and I hope you like it. Many heartfelt kudos to
Rani Veko
for all her assistance and her hard work getting my posts into some form of readable sahpe. I would wish as solid a beta on every writer, pro or fan, but then I'd have to sahre, as I believe she's unique.
Thanks for keeping my thread on page one, folks, and I hope there isn't nearly the same wait for the next piece.
*Derisa*
When they’d finished with the album, Jynna retired upstairs to her studio while Derek headed out to take care of a few chores. Kirney tidied the kitchen, finding a strange satisfaction in the domestic task. It felt so normal, and she fell into it so easily, stacking the dishes, wiping down the table and cooking surfaces, filling a sink with hot water and adding cleanser, then dumping in the dishes for washing. Tonin beeped an offer to assist and Kirney smiled down at him.
“No, that’s okay. I can manage. And I’m kind of enjoying myself,” she said. “Besides, I’d think you’d find it demeaning, O King of the Droids,” she added in a teasing tone.
He blatted at her, then replied with a regal sounding series of swoops and chatter, nonsense for the most part, but amusing in its own way. The droid accompanied the royal tirade with a roll through the kitchen, one grasper arm extended in a parody of a monarch surveying his lands. Kirney chuckled, and he winked his photoreceptor at her, sharing the joke.
“Tonin, if you would be so kind, I’d really like a copy of some of those holos from the album…?” Kirney asked.
Seemingly pleased to be given a task, the little droid swung about on his treads, and with a cheerful chirrup of assent, went to download the holopics Kirney had requested, leaving her to finish up the dishes.
As she settled back to her task, she heard Derek’s speeder return, over the noise of the wind roaring outside. A few moments later he was clumping into the kitchen, stopping at the door long enough to pull off his boots. “Jynna resting?” he asked.
Kirney nodded. Derek snagged a towel from a hook and began drying the dishes.
“How long’s he going to be gone?” he asked.
“I’m giving him twelve hours,” Kirney replied, “And then I’m calling in the cavalry.”
“He’s hip-deep in some kriff, isn’t he?” Derek shook his head, “Kid has a talent for trouble.”
“Really?” Kirney pried at a stubborn container lid, then dumped the container and lid into the sink, “I got the impression he was pretty clean-cut as a kid.”
“Jynna’s not going to show you
those
pictures,” Derek laughed. “No, he was a pretty good kid. Didn’t start getting into trouble until he was an adult. He ever tell you about the gur-cat that wouldn’t stay dead?”
Kirney chuckled, “Oh yeah. He and a couple of the guys in the squad shared descriptions of various practical jokes they’d been witness to.”
“Witness, hell! That whole prank was his idea!” Derek corrected her with a laugh. “Has to be the funniest CPD Academy commencement I’ve ever seen…”
“I’ll bet!” The new tidbit of information put a different light on the whole story, and Kirney had to smile at the memory of how Myn had underplayed the whole event. When she looked up from her task again, Derek was watching her carefully. “What is it?” she asked, masking her sudden flare of paranoia.
“You seem like a really good match,” Myn’s uncle replied, “But you know… he’s seen some rough times…” Kirney nodded, looking back down at her work, and soothing her fears surreptitiously, as Derek continued. “I guess we’re a bit concerned over the whole sniping thing you mentioned. See, back before he signed on at CPD, he was a sharpshooter: planetary championships, system championships, you know, the whole competition thing. The only guys who could outshoot the kid were CPD, which I guess was why he signed up.” Derek’s voice took on a bitter edge when he finished, “That and to please his father.”
Kirney waited for him to continue. Derek made a visible effort to refocus his thoughts. “Anyway, he did fine in the Forces, and we had no sign of any problems, until he came back from this one tour. He’d earned a commendation, though we didn’t know what for, but he was all withdrawn. He and Jynna had always had a great relationship, all kinds of close, but when he came back that time, he just… well, he just stopped talking. To her, to anyone. He was all tight-faced all the time, and he’d give you these penetrating looks. He stopped
smiling
, completely. That’s when we started to get worried.”
Kirney’s heart froze at the sink as she heard this description. She remembered the exact expression on Myn’s face that his uncle was describing.
“I just want to be reassured he’s not going to lose it, or… something, y’know?” Derek paused in his task to meet her eyes. “I’m not sure you can give me that, but after seeing the way he was with you… it was like seeing the kid come to life again.”
Kirney pushed back from the counter and met Derek’s gaze squarely, her regret shining clear on her face. “I have to be honest with you, Derek: I know the look you’re talking about. I wish I could say I didn’t, but I do. It wasn’t sniping that pushed him to the edge that time, though.” She paused, and then blew out a breath she wasn’t aware she’d been holding.
“Like I told you earlier, he’d been given command of his own squadron, and on their first assignment, their first actual mission, they got sucked into a horrible trap. There was nothing he could have done differently to avoid it, but the loss and the survivor’s guilt nearly vaped his career. He went into an emotional vacuum; shut himself down on the inside. That’s what you’re talking about, isn’t it?”
Derek nodded, “Well, it’s terrible, but I’m kind of relieved it wasn’t sniping that put him… y’know, like you said, close to the edge”
“That’s the funny thing: those times he was called on to do it in the Wrai-… in the unit we were in, he did it without hesitation, in defense of his team. I got into a sticky spot one time,” she said, recalling the false roof on the building on Borleias, “And he covered me. I was really glad he had sniper skills that day,” she said quietly, “And I think he was too.”
Derek grinned at her, a broad beam of amusement, “I’ll bet, considering where the two of you are today.” He chuckled at her blush, then finished in a whole new vein, “I guess as long as he feels there’s a purpose to it, that it isn’t just political, he’s fine.”
Kirney voiced her agreement, then met Derek’s penetrating gaze again, his eyes a few shades darker than Myn’s, meeting hers squarely. “You hang onto him. I think you two are good for each other.”
Tonin rolled into the room and took advantage of the natural pause in the conversation to inform Kirney that she had a call coming in to his subspace comms unit. Thinking it might be Myn, she took the link from his extensor arm and moved into the other room.
“Slane Shipping, Kirney speaking.”
“Ms. Slane, my name is Hallis Saper,” a woman’s voice replied, professional and clear in tone, “I’m a journalist with CNC-”
Recognizing the name from among the messages she’d gotten when she returned home to Coronet, Kirney cut her off: “Ms. Saper. I got your message. I don’t think there’s anything I can do to help you.”
“Wait, wait,” came the voice on the other side of the link, “Please. This story is really hot, and people deserve to know what’s going on. Five of the businesses that I know are involved are closed this morning, with no sign of their proprietors. You have some information, and a mutual friend says you can help me get that information out.”
Suspicious, Kirney scowled. “Which friend?” she asked.
“Rij Talar. He owns the Crater?”
“He said he wanted nothing to do with you people, or your stories,” Kirney countered.
“That was before last night.”
There was a click on the line, as the reporter triggered a recording, and Kirney heard Rij’s voice:
“I think we need to talk. Things have gone all crazy and I want someone to know what’s up, in case anything happens to me…”
”
As the recording continued, there was no questioning its authenticity: Rij sounded scared and worried, and the details he’d shared with Hallis proved that only he could have made it. When she’d switched off the recording, Hallis continued, “We spoke in confidence last night, but when I commed him back a bit later, he’d been grabbed.”
“Grabbed?! By who?”
“Who do you think? A certain gang of green-coated jackboots,” Hallis answered. “I’ve been investigating Spaceport Sector for two months now, and I finally have some details, but no one who can give me hard data. I’m not asking you to witness in court or anything, Ms. Slane, just help me bring this to public attention. Nothing can withstand the eyes of all the world watching at once.”
Kirney was silent as she considered. As long as Myn had the
Future
, there was little practical that she could do here, with only a swoop and an astromech as assets, but once he returned, she would do whatever it took to help her friends. In the meantime, as much as she wanted to avoid the spotlight glare of public attention, Kirney knew Hallis was right: the scrutiny of the entire system could prevent the debacle from becoming a fatal disaster.
“All right.” she replied. “Here’s what I know…”

She's not kidding when she says she's had a hard time lately, loyal readers. Thanks for being patient with her. I've already told her so in person, but I'll say here for the record, nice post Derisa! I like the interaction between Derek and Kirney, and the introduction of Hallis Saper! (Bonus points to the first reader who can identify where else we see that EU character!)

RE: Last Chance: Myn and Lara ...---<---@ UPDATED 06/19 @-->---...
I've lurked on this fic for far too long and it's about time I showed up to say something about it. (In answer to your musings on the nature of the delurkers, I must admit that I am actually several weird people, but I share one username with myself.
) Anyway...
I loved the little bit about Myn's active participation in the school practical jokes - underneath his serious exterior, he really does have a great sense of humor.
Wow, he hadn't told his family about the Talons? That's understandable, but it must have been horrible for them not to know what had happened. I can see how they would think it's a result of the sniping, but it's good that it's all out in the open now. That way, the whole family can heal. Derek especially seems to need some time to deal with the situation and the changes in Myn's personality.
Hallis! Hallis is the best! (Oh, and
Rani
, she's from SoA, the best SW book
ever
.
) That's a creepy message from Rij, though, and now he's been taken? I hope Kirney's making the right decision by deciding to help Hallis out.
Can't wait for more - you have me on the edge of my seat.

Told you I'd do it.
“I’m giving him twelve hours,” Kirney replied, “And then I’m calling in the cavalry.”
Cavalry? In one way, I want there to be trouble...
Kirney waited for him to continue. Derek made a visible effort to refocus his thoughts. “Anyway, he did fine in the Forces, and we had no sign of any problems, until he came back from this one tour. He’d earned a commendation, though we didn’t know what for, but he was all withdrawn. He was all tight-faced all the time, and he’d give you these penetrating looks. He stopped smiling, completely. That’s when we started to get worried.”
That just... fits. But its so... so...
Derek grinned at her, a broad beam of amusement, “I’ll bet, considering where the two of you are today.” He chuckled at her blush, then finished in a whole new vein, “I guess as long as he feels there’s a purpose to it, that it isn’t just political, he’s fine.”
No. I didn't think it was
that
bad... but it was in the time of the Diktat...
“Ms. Slane, my name is Hallis Saper,” a woman’s voice replied, professional and clear in tone, “I’m a journalist with CNC-”
Oh yeah! Now we're
cooking!
Oh frag. Not good.
