NJO Missing Scene: Rebirth M/L, H/L (Spoilers)

This came about after some e-mail exchanges over our unhappiness with the lack of a warm family scene after the birth of Ben, and the
way that H/L's reunion was handled. This was written with Skydancer. The first and third sections are mine, the second one was written by her.
Disclamer: Star Wars belongs to George Lucas and this is for entertainment purposes only, no money is being made.
"We did it." Mara looked down at her precious, beautiful son and wanted to cry. She
should feel exhausted after fighting her disease and giving birth, but instead she felt filled with energy, elated and so happy she thought her face would crack from the broad smile that had formed on it. Tears of joy ran freely down her cheeks. She looked at Luke and saw that his face and sense mirrored hers, his blue eyes revealing the depth of his feelings. They glistened with barely held in check moisture.
"He's beautiful, Mara. We have a boy. Can you believe it? I have a son. I still can't believe he's really here."
He knew he was babbling but he didn't care. He was a father and he hadn't lost his wife, and his baby was healthy and alive and that was all he could think about.
As Luke sat with her on the bed, Mara could feel his arms tighten around her shoulders and the words they both needed so desperately to say came out. "I love you." She couldn’t be sure if they had both spoken them aloud or if they had come though their Force bond, but it didn’t matter.
Luke lowered his face to hers, while she lay in the bed cradling their son in her arms, and kissed her lips. It was soft and sweet and tender and filled with an all-encompassing love. As their Force senses joined they extended their love out to surround their son and he cooed in contentment.
A soft rap on the door interrupted the rather lengthy kiss. It opened and a very familiar voice called softly into the room. "May I come in?"

Luke heard them debating outside the door after Leia's soft voice asked his permission to come in. It was Han trying to ask Leia to come back later and leave them alone on this momentous occasion. Their usual bantering back and forth with each other might be referred to as a bad sign to others, but not to Luke. To him, it could only mean that things were back to normal.
Luke knew that their disagreement was a reflection of their togetherness, but silence between them was a different matter. For them - silence - was a sign of an estrangement, a standoff which could either separate them further or bring them back together with a vengeance. He was glad it was the other.
Luke looked at his wife and her smile conveyed to him that she understood. He kissed her again, but briefly this time, and announced loudly for both his sister and her husband to come in.
"Leia... Han... please come in; you don't need to ask my permission. You're both always welcome," Luke told them.
"Thanks, Luke. You know I can't wait to see the new addition to the family, but Han here insisted I wait." Leia nudged her husbands's ribcage after she had spoken.
"Ouch... cut that out, Leia!" Han shouted. His wife could still nudge hard if she put her mind to it. "I'm sorry, kid, but Leia here is just over excited about becoming an aunt. Aren't you...Aunt Leia?"
"No...I wasn't, Uncle Han."
"Okay...you've said it. I feel old already, not that I haven't lately. I think one more aim at those blasted Vongs would do the trick!"
"Shh...Han, you'll wake the baby," Leia reminded her husband.
Luke felt a warm feeling rush through him looking at both of them. They had gone through one circumstance after another, more than any couple he knew, and it was about time they had a life again. He knew fighting these new villains had been hard on everyone, including Mara. And he was glad to be given this small amount of time to be reunited with people who cared, now that he had changed his status from a man to a father. Leia was carrying his baby in her arms and he could feel the amount of joy surrounding her Force presence.
Leia felt the wiggling of the small infant in her arms and felt her tears slowly forming in her eyes. She hadn't held a baby for awhile and it felt good. The baby vibrated with such pure innocence that his Force sense wrapped her with joy. An extreme joy she had not felt for a very long time, since the birth of her own children. In these dark times, this spark of hope was so needed for her to keep fighting. In fact, not just for her, but for everyone to find a purpose not to give up. Finally she looked up at her husband and smiled.
Han saw a look on his wife's face that he hadn't seen for a very long time. The resolve to fight, a smile of hope.
"That's the spirit, Leia!" he said to himself. With her beside him, he felt like he could blast those stupid Vong out of the universe. Finally, his lips uttered - I love you - to his wife. It was a sentence that had been taken for granted and not spoken between them for such a long time.
Leia was shocked, and kept her stare focused at her husband. He had said it,...he had finally said he loved her again. It was such a relief to hear those words from him after the ordeal they had gone through after Chewie died on Sernpidal. Her hatred for the Vong had made her come very close to joining the darkside in order to be rid of them, but his love...the love of Han, could always put her in the right perspective. Just the kind of reassurance she badly needed at the moment. She looked at her husband, smiled and replied rather loudly, "I know..."
Han laughed and continued laughing even when both Luke and Mara stared at him strangely. He remembered that same reply after she confessed her love for him a very, very long time ago.

Leia laughed as well and looked down at the bundle in her arms. Her nephew.
Just thinking that word lifted her heart. His eyes were shut, but his mouth
curved
into a small smile for a moment, as if to add his agreement that love was
the answer
they sought to dispel the darkness. Her fingers stroked his fine tuft of
pale gold hair,
no, not just gold but with strands of red as well. From a distance he would
look bald, but she knew that soon
he would have hair as thick as her brother and Mara's and though
it was impossible to tell now, she somehow knew that his chin would dimple.
Her eyes
looked up and met Luke's, and understanding seemed to pass between them.
His look
said, " had their mother looked like that when she held them? Had she loved
him
with the same burning intensity that he now loved his son?" He had never
understood how
she could have abandoned him, but suddenly now he knew. He knew he would do
anything
to keep his son safe and alive no matter the cost to himself. As attuned to
each other as they were,
Leia felt Mara join in Luke's understanding, and offer him her love.
Han noticed the silent communication, and when it seemed to have finished he
interrupted and said,
" So does Uncle Han get a chance to inspect the newest addition to this
crazy family yet?"
Leia smiled at her husband but looked to Mara for her permission.
Mara nodded her head and chuckled, "go ahead Solo. You do remember how to
hold a baby
don't you?"
"Sure I do. It's me! Nothin to worry about." Han recognized the new
mother anxiety behind the
light barb Mara had thrown out. Leia had fussed a lot in the beginning. He
walked over to his
wife and slowly took the child from her arms. His eyes met Leia’s and
his heart lurched at the thought of what he had almost thrown away.
Never again, he thought. I’ll never let you go again. They stood there looking at each other, saying without words what was in their hearts until the baby cried softly, interrupting them.
“Shhhh, shhhh little guy. It’s ok,” Han said.
Mara was surprised at how gentle his touch was,
and she felt her body relax from a tensing she hadn't realized her muscles
made.
Han started to sway his body back and forth, and talked to the boy. "Hey
there kid. I'm your
Uncle Han and boy are you going to need me. Yeah, you have your mom and dad
for all the
important stuff, but I’m the one that can show you how to be normal.”
He winked mischievously
at Luke, Mara and Leia, who all immediately feigned the proper amount of
indignation. They all
laughed and it felt good. He walked around the room humming an old tune that Leia remembered him singing to the twins when they were little, and she smiled at the memory. After a few moments he started back towards her. Han kissed his wife and took the baby back to Mara. It was time to leave. The short kiss wasn’t enough for him after all they had been through. He needed more. He needed her in his arms, forgiving him. Loving him.
"Here you go kids, he's all yours. You have a great little guy there."
"Thanks Han," said Luke. He felt Han clap him on his back and with that
contact, he felt the brotherly affection
Han had for him but was unable to voice.
"Yes, Thank you, both of you," said Mara. "It means a lot to us to have you
here."
Leia looked at her sister-in-law and said, "we wouldn't be anywhere else.
Good luck."
"You're gonna need it," said Han teasingly. "With you two as his parents I
don't even want to
think what his terrible two's will be like. " Luke and Mara shared a
momentary worried glance,
but any comeback that Mara had been about to make was cut off by Leia saying,
"HAN. Don't scare them."
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!" Han said as Leia cuffed him lightly. Just then
the door to the room opened
and 3PO's voice could be heard chastizing R2.
"R2D2, we can't go in there. Master Luke is busy with his family, you
should know better than...."
but the droids words were interrupted by the squeaking inquiry of his
companion.
"No R2, 3PO it's all right... come on in," said Mara, "I'm sure Luke wants
you both here." She looked up
to confirm that she was right and saw Luke’s big smile. It was that smile he
had, that never failed
to find it's reflection in her own face within moments. He was the only
man that could do that to her.
"I'm sorry Master Luke, Mistress Mara, but he just insisted that we come in
to see young Master Skywalker."
The droids ambled over to the bed where Luke sat with his wife and child.
"Of course you can see him," said Luke.
Mara held her son closer to R2 and said, "R2D2, meet Ben...." She
looked at Luke for a moment, and a realization dawned. They would win this war.
Somehow, some day. They had come though the fire together and emerged stronger.
Mara felt cleansed, not only of her disease but from her past as well. She had fought the darkness and won, not by a solitary effort but by opening herself completely to the strength of family, to love and to the Force. Her throat tightened for just a moment as she finished the introduction of her son..."the Son of Skywalker." She winked at her husband. In that moment, Luke knew that this is what was
meant to be and that hope would never die.
The end.

Very sweet, Mariah Jade and Skydancer! Unfortunately, the NJO is missing far, far too many family scenes like this one. It's too bad the pro novels and pro authors missed out on this wonderful opportunity to bring the Solo and Skywalker families together for this joyous and momentous event. We could certainly use more positive scenes in that dark and depressing universe. Thanks for doing what I wish Del Rey and LFL had done instead of giving us Anakin Solo's reaction to the birth of little Ben.

This is the type of scene missing from that NJO series. Instead of a nice family scene, we get death and destruction.
