	Are you people trying to tell me that my story is getting predictable? Or do you just enjoy watching the characters make mistakes when you know better? Anyhoo, I got on a hot streak the other night and here's more. ******************************************* Keiv Nuran was out of his A-Wing almost as soon as it landed. He was anxious to get over to the main hangar to see this woman smuggler. Technically he had been the first person to meet her, and according to the unwritten agreement among the pilots the first one to meet a woman had the first chance to ask her out. The addendum to this rule was that he was working in a limited time frame. It wouldn’t be long before another pilot felt free to pursue an interest in the Eowyn’s captain. Hoping that she at least wouldn’t be ugly, Keiv began trotting across Blue Squadron’s private hangar before a voice halted him. “Commander. Commander Nuran. Commander Nuran!,” Garn Welsky yelled from the open cockpit of his own A-Wing. “What is it Garn?” Keiv asked in an exasperated voice. “A couple of the guys from Red Squadron are getting a sabaac game together tonight. I thought you might like to join in,” Garn said as he climbed down from his ship. “Not tonight kid. I might have plans,” Keiv said as he turned to resume his jog to the main hangar. Either Garn’s too young to think about the woman who just arrived or he thinks I’m too old to be interested in her, Keiv thought as he nudged his way past some techs who were blocking the tunnel linking the two hangars. At just past forty standard years of age, Keiv didn’t consider himself too old for anything. He prayed whoever he was about to meet didn’t think he was too old either. Keiv arrived just in time to see the boarding ramp lower from the port side of the freighter. As soon as the ramp touched the hangar floor a group of personnel operating loadlifters made their way aboard to begin off-loading the cargo. Holding his flight helmet under his left arm, Keiv used his right hand to hurriedly smooth out what hair he had left. It wasn’t long before the base personnel who had already boarded the Eowyn started making their way back down the ramp using the loadlifters to maneuver the heavy crates. Keiv was beginning to wonder if the pilot was going to oversee the entire offloading process when a pair of legs that definitely didn’t belong to any member of the ground crew appeared at the top of the ramp. As the legs proceeded down the ramp, they were joined by a slim torso and a hard, yet still pretty face. Blue Two was still admiring her short red hair when a pair of green eyes found him. “Hi. I’m Mara Jade, captain of the Eowyn.” “I’m Commander Nuran,” Keiv returned automatically. “Welcome to our humble home.” “I’m just glad to be anywhere,” Mara answered with a look of relief. “For a while there I thought I was going to be stranded in deep space. My hyperdrive gave out and I had to…” “I know,” Keiv interrupted. “You already told me.” “Oh, so that was you out there,” Mara said with a smile. “I guess the helmet should have given it away. I want to thank you for hanging around the rendezvous point for so long. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t been there. There aren’t too many places a person can go with a shot up ship and illegal cargo.” “All in a day’s work,” Keiv said with false humility. “Nonsense,” Mara declared. “I’d like to buy you a drink as a way of saying thanks, if there’s any place around here we can do that.” “Not around here. The only booze we get around here is what the freighter pilots bring us. I’ve got a bottle of Corellian brandy in my locker if you wouldn’t mind sharing that with me. I got it in trade from a Wookie navigator a few months back.” “Oh no. You should save that for a special occasion. I’m afraid to ask what you had to trade for it.” “You’d be surprised,” Keiv said with a smile. “All I had to do was let him take my A-Wing out for a ride. One of the benefits of having rank.” “All right then,” Mara agreed. “I’d love to have a drink. But I still owe you one.” “Have a drink with me and we’ll call it even,” Keiv proposed. Keiv was about to lead Mara away when a delegation approached her ship. Flanked by two men in military uniforms walked a short, dark-haired woman. 	What's this about them both having SHORT hair? 	“Welcome, I’m Leia. Looks like you’ve had an interesting trip,” Princess Leia said to Mara as she glanced at the Eowyn. “More interesting than I would have liked,” Mara agreed. “ Hi, I’m Mara.” As she spoke, the Emperor’s Hand studied Leia critically. Her eyes and forehead were framed with worry lines and her temples were streaked with the first whisps of gray hair. Could this be the woman she suspected her Luke of still wanting? Suddenly Mara wasn’t so sure. But if it wasn’t love, then what was it that protected Leia Organa of Alderaan? “What happened to Mako?” Leia inquired. “He usually makes this delivery run.” “The Imps got him,” Mara replied. “Too many flights without enough official documentation. They caught him last week with a hold full of illegal spice. Nobody knows what happened to him after that.” “So how did you get the job?” Leia asked intently. “Mako and I go back quite a ways, although I hadn’t seen him in quite a few years,” Mara lied smoothly. “He introduced me to your man on Dantooine a couple of months ago. When Mako got nabbed, I got the job.” After listening to Mara’s explanation Leia gave a fractional nod to a man standing a few meters away. Mara hadn’t noticed him and wondered how long he had been there. No doubt he was now off to try to confirm her story about Mako. Mara wasn’t worried. Everything she had said, except for the part about knowing Mako for years, was the truth. And now that Mako was gone, no one could prove that she wasn’t an old friend of his. Shifting into a more relaxed attitude, Leia took a more serious look at Mara’s ship. “Looks like you might be staying with us for a while,” Leia observed. “We’re kind of cramped for space here, but if you’d like you could share my quarters until your ship is repaired.” “That’s not necessary,” Mara said. “I’m used to staying aboard ship anyway.” “I’ve lived aboard a freighter and it’s never comfortable,” Leia observed. “I insist you stay with me.” “All right. Thanks,” Mara agreed. “Good,” Leia said with a smile. “Just get whatever you need from your ship and we’ll get you moved into my quarters. I hope you’ll have dinner with me tonight.” “Actually I’ve already made plans,” Mara said with a sidelong glance towards Keiv, who had slipped into the background. “You move fast Commander,” Leia remarked with a hint of a grin. “I think your fellow pilots would have allowed you at least an hour.” “Perhaps ma’am,” Keiv returned stiffly. “But perhaps not.” “Well now that you’ve staked your claim, I think you can allow Mara here out of your sight for one night.” “I’d be happy to take a rain check on that brandy,” Mara offered. “Of course,” Keiv said with a curt nod. “I’m sure we’ll bump into each other again.” -----signature----- Voted Dork Magazine's "Sexiest Nerd Alive" for 2008 http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb237/Snerdmania/DSCF0113.jpg

	Oooh, the plot thickens!!! I can't come up with any clever comments, so-- great work, Herman. I'm really enjoying the story. I think I said it before but this is the best AU I've read in a long time.
