I love this story; it has to be one of the best AU's I've read. Keep it up, Herman. I can't wait to see more details of a universe with an evil Luke. Will we get to see more of Han and Leia and the other Rebels? Or maybe Vader? (Ooh that would be fun! I can see the sparks flying between him and Mara now!)

Another great selection, Herman! This is definitely one of the best SW fan fics I have read. Keep it up, keep us intrigued, just keep writing in general. I'm on the edge of my seat for the next installment.

“I’m glad you could make it here on such short notice,” Emperor Skywalker said to the man standing before his desk. The man in question was definitely atypical of an intelligence officer. Exceedingly tall with a rather burly frame, he was not the sort who could disappear into the crowd. Hidden behind this large bulk was a very clever mind. In his brief career as a field operative, Commander Larson Hanlover recruited and ran a larger spy ring than agents with decades of experience. Somehow he was always able to find out a potential spy’s weakness, and use that to turn him against his comrades.
Recognized for his unique talents, as well as the limitations his physical appearance placed on his career, Larson was removed as a field agent and was made a Section Chief in the Imperial Intelligence Network. From that post, he taught new field agents everything he knew about field operations: how to identify a potential spy, how to find that person’s weakness, and how to establish a communication chain to funnel the gathered information back to headquarters. During the latter days of the Rebellion, Hanlover’s section was credited with gathering more usable information than any other section in the entire Intelligence Network.
“It was no problem at all, my Emperor,” Larson responded, able to mask his nervousness at being in the Emperor’s presence. It was formidable enough to meet with the ruler of an entire galaxy, but the red-haired woman standing behind the Emperor’s shoulder was indeed puzzling. Her narrow eyes and impassive face were impossible to read and made Larson wonder yet again why he had been called upon.
“I won’t waste your time with pleasantries if you won’t waste mine,” the Emperor said casually. “I’ve brought you here to inform you that you are the new head of the Imperial Intelligence Network.
“Me?” Larson asked, forgetting to add the Emperor’s honorific title to the end of his remark. Apparently being made Chief of Intelligence never crossed his mind as a possible reason for the Emperor’s summons. Hanlover well knew that a summons from the Emperor usually meant punishment, not promotion.
“Yes you,” the Emperor replied tersely. “Your record as a Section Chief is impeccable. During the years of the Rebellion you ran the largest, most successful spy ring in the entire Empire. More importantly than that, you’re not political. I read through dozens of evaluations of opportunists who used their positions in the Intelligence community as the fast track to promotion. You, on the other hand, once actually had the gall to deny a promotion so you could continue to oversee an important operation, clearly demonstrating that you place the job first. I trust you won’t try to deny this promotion, Admiral Hanlover.”
“No my Emperor. Of course not,” Larson said with pride, the reality of the situation finally becoming clear.
“I’m glad to hear that, now on to your first official duty. The woman standing behind me is Mara Jade. During Emperor Palpatine’s reign she held the title of Emperor’s Hand. As of right now she once again holds that title. She is my voice beyond these walls. An order from her should be considered no differently than an order from me. From time to time she will perform duties for me that require a person of ‘special talents’. When in the field she may need access to vital Intelligence information. I charge you with seeing she gets the information she needs while keeping her true identity on a strictly need to know basis.”
“Yes sir, my Emperor,” Larson snapped in proper military fashion.
“That is all for now. You are dismissed. My Chief Aide, Telin, has the proper papers and will assist you in getting settled in. Be careful.”
That final admonishment somewhat deflated Admiral Larson Hanlover’s jubilation. In a single decree, he had passed over hundreds of his fellow Intelligence officers. It seemed the Emperor’s reward did not come without some risks of its own. To survive the first few weeks in his new job he would need to be careful.
