I *heart* my new muse, Tuhiatua. grin

And now, a LONG overdo post!!

********

Khyte paced nervously in the foyer of the courthouse. The trial would begin soon, Khyte's anxiety increasing with each passing moment. Her mind began to swirl with the thoughts of failure. What if they lost? What if they questioned her medical state? What if they asked of Corban?

The Jedi closed her eyes, trying to take in deep, steady breaths. Everything would be fine. Stanto had promised that he would do his best, and Khyte could ask no more of the man. As much as the man had reassured her, Khyte still held doubt in her. It was her child, after all.

The appearance of Junuh had startled her, even more so when he had brought Stanto to help. She had thought that Junuh no longer held a place in her heart, yet at his reappearance, she no longer was sure of herself. While they had been together, she had been happy for the first time since Corban's death. Yet, the Force seemed to be against her, for the only thing that pulled her away from Junuh was Corra's disappearance.

The question had often plagued Khyte's mind: if Corra had not been taken, would Junuh have left her? He mind wanted believe that he would have. The only reason he had left in the first place was because of Corra's disappearance, and even then, he had shown up to offer his help, even though they were no longer together.

She felt a hand firmly grip her shoulder, turning to see Kimbal waiting for her with a smile on his face and Stanto at his side. "Are you ready?" he prompted. His calm manner unnerved Khyte. How he could remain calm while she was a nervous wreck was beyond his comprehension.

"Not really, no," she answered while trying to muster a smile. It did not want to appear. Khyte let it drop and squared her shoulders. "Shall we?" she asked.

~~~~
The sheer size of the courthouse did not unnerve Kimbal in the slightest. Jedi were trained to be ambassadors; traveling the galaxy and visiting the grand homes of many political figureheads was merely a part of the job. The size of the crowd present did not bother him in the least. Having spent his time traveling with Ay'Tasha to the slums of the galaxy had trained Kimbal to not be bothered by a large group of people. Yet like the under cities and smuggler's bars that he had visited, one very large factor present in the courthouse twisted Kimbal's guts.
The people present in the crowd.
Kimbal barely recognized any of the faces in the crowd. Jonn, Quin-Cey, and Rhy-Awn were seated near the front of the assembly. Kimbal was at least glad that they would be so close to them. Master Windu was present as well, seated next to Healer Linsday several rows behind Jonn and Rhy-Awn. Mace did not grant them a smile as they entered but held his calm, passive face as always.
The rest of the crowd was a mystery to Kimbal. Many were well dressed and held an air as if they expected to be treated like royalty. It was with a small flame of anger that Kimbal realized that they were all friends of the De Jongs, undoubtedly present to display what powerful friends the Alderaani couple held.
The De Jongs were already seated in their hover pod, chatting merrily to their attorney Dorbury as if they were at a family reunion. Lucci De Jong eyed Kimbal and Khyte as they entered. She raised an eyebrow as if to feign shock that they even showed up. Kimbal felt Khyte take his hand and squeeze is tightly. He glanced at her face; she was trying her best to hide her anger.
The courthouse was styled after the Senate house; a large semi-circle amphitheatre was its shape. The judge sat in his hover pod in the middle of the court. The plaintiff and defendant remained separated and were confined to their own hover pods. The rest of the assembly sat in a stationary viewing area, while guards were at the ready lest any incidents should occur.
Khyte, Kimbal, and Stanto entered their own hover pod, feeling its engines come to life and begin to hover. The judge had not yet ascended and the courthouse was noisy. Kimbal glanced back at the assembly. He held a smile as he caught Quin-Cey's eye. The padawan looked thoroughly bored sitting next to his Master. Kimbal gave a small chuckle and felt sorry for the young man. He would have to remember to suggest that Quin-Cey remained at the temple to Jonn, for the padawan's own sake.
More people filed into the sitting area. Master Gallia entered and took her seat beside Mace, which eased Kimbal's nerves slightly. Adi had always been there to support them in the past; it was fitting that she was there now.
Kimbal was more so surprised to see Junuh enter the room and take his seat behind Mace and Adi. Kimbal was torn as to which emotion was stronger; the urge to hit the man, or to thank him for his help. He glanced over at Khyte, who had also noticed Junuh's appearance. A small smile crept onto her lips that Kimbal had not seen in day.
Hit him. Definitely, Kimbal thought as he turned back around in his seat.
The judge's platform rose into the area. All those present rose to their feet and stood until the platform came to a stop and hovered in the center of the hall. The judge was an elder Bothan; his dark blue robes contrasted against his grey fur. Patches of white fur were beginning to show in his coat.
His two assistants sat at his side; a human female and a green-skinned male Twi'lek, both in matching dark blue robes. The woman stood. "His Honor Tiati Hi'nna presiding. This case is now open and this court in session."
Hi'nna cleared his throat as the woman sat down and leaned forward in his seat. "Will both parties come forward?"
The hover pods carrying the De Jongs floated forward. Kimbal sucked in a deep breath as theirs went forward as well.
"Will the defendants please rise?"
Kimbal gave a quick glance to Khyte before they both rose to face the judge. The old Bothan had his eyes narrowed as he eyed both of them.
"Miss Dunst and Mr. Underwood? You are both Jedi, I am informed."
A bad taste crept into Kimbals mouth. "Yes, your honor."
The judge raised a bushy eyebrow. "I am very well aware of a Jedi's abilities, and am also aware that several more Jedi are present in this assembly. I am familiar with the concept of a 'Jedi Mind-trick.' Now, I trust that we do not have to worry about this famed stunt being performed in my courthouse on anyone present, do we?" he asked bitterly.
Kimbal quickly collected his thoughts. "Your Honor, while I do admit that while those of us present do in fact know how to perform this task, I must also tell you that mind tricks do not work on the weak-minded. They would be ineffective if used on anyone present , Your Honor," he added.
The judge accepted the answer with a nod of his head, then turned to his case file. "Very well then, let us begin. Miss Dunst?"
Kimbal withdrew to his seat while Khyte remained standing. He could see her trying not to fidget from anxiousness. She was playing with her hands and shifting her weight. Remember our diplomatic training, he thought.
Khyte heard him, letting out a held breath and putting her hands at her side. She straightened her shoulders and tried to hold a neutral visage as she awaited the judge's words.
"Miss Dunst, you are the birth mother off Corra De Jong, correct?"
"Yes, sir."
"And could you please tell us who is the father of Corra?"
"Corban De Jong, sir," she said, her neutral face faltering for only a second.
"And where exactly is Mr. De Jong now?" the judge inquired, frowning at his notes then eyeing Khyte.
"He is dead, sir."
"Ah. Yes. Well then," the judge mused, looking down at his notes once more. "Miss Dunst, you know the plaintiff, do you not?"
"Yes sir," Khyte answered.
"Could you please tell us how you know Mrs. De Jong and of what relation she is to your daughter?"
"She was Corban's mother; Corra's grandmother. I met her on her only visit to see her dying son," Khyte added with emphasis.
"Your honor, they would not let me see my son!" Lucci burst out, rising to her feet in anger.
"Be seated, Mrs. De Jong," the judge snapped. "Do not speak out of turn. This is not a case about visitation rights to your son, now is it?"
Kimbal hid a smile. He could see that Khyte's nerves had eased at well at the out lash to Lucci.
The judge continued once Lucci returned to her seat. "Now Miss Dunst, did Mrs. De Jong ever approach you and discuss the custody of Corra with you?"
"Approach me, yes, but never discussed it, sir. It was instead Mrs. De Jong approaching me and demanding that I hand my child over."
"I see. And what was your reaction?"
"I said no," Khyte said simply.
"I see. And Miss Dunst, are you aware that Mrs. De Jong went to court on her home planet and legally gain custody over her grandchild?"
"Your honor, how could she gain custody over Corra if I, her legal guardian, was not there to defend myself in the case? Mrs. De Jong nor her attorneys ever once contacted me to notify me about such a case happening."
The judge scratched his chin. "I see. Thank you, that will be all for now. Mrs. De Jong? Please rise."
Khyte took her seat, exhaling deeply as she sat. Kimbal took her hand, giving her a proud smile. Khyte returned the glance, looking slightly relieved.
"Mrs. De Jong, you are aware that under Coruscanti law that the mother of a child is by both right and law that child's legal guardian?"
"Unless it is proven that the mother is unfit to raise the child, sir," Lucci added.
The Bothan narrowed his eyes. "Mrs. De Jong, are you trying to tell me my own laws?"
"No sir. I am just simply stating the rest of it."
"Very well then. Why do you believe that Miss Dunst is unfit to raise the child?"
"Your Honor, that woman is a Jedi. A follower of an ancient sect devoted to wizardry and swordplay. That Temple of theirs is no place to raise a child, sir."
"And yet you let your own son grow up there, did you not?" Hi'nna pressed.
"I did not fully understand the Jedi life when my son was taken away from me, Your Honor."
"'Taken away from you?' Mrs. De Jong, you make it sound like the Jedi stole your child from you. Did you not freely agree to let your son go just like every other family in this galaxy?"
"Yes, your honor," Lucci said.
"Very well then. With that being said, can you give me any reason why a Jedi is unfit to raise a child?"
"Your Honor, my own beloved son was a Jedi," Lucci began. "I now know what a hard life they lead. They put their lives into danger on a daily basis. They are often away from their homes on missions, and many are killed!"
"And yet a minute ago you said they were wizards with swords," the judge snapped. "Mrs. De Jong, the life and risks of a Jedi is known to all of us. Now can you give me any real reason why Corra should not be raised by Miss Dunst?"
"She has denied me the rights of a grandmother to see my grandchild," Lucci began babbling.
"Mrs. De Jong, take your seat, I am through with you for the moment," Hi'nna snapped. The fur on the back of his neck stood with agitation. He grumbled then turned to Khyte and Kimbal once more. "Mr. Underwood, please rise."
Kimbal got to his feet and squared his shoulders. He tried not to smile; Lucci was thus far proving very helpful in helping Khyte gain guardianship over her daughter publicly.
"Mr. Underwood, can you please tell us your relationship to both Corra De Jong and to Miss Dunst?"
"I am one of Corra's three godfathers, Your Honor. I grew up with Khyte Dunst and Corban De Jong in the crèche of the Jedi Temple."
"And you are of no blood relation to them."
"No sir."
"Mr. Underwood, the plaintiff has listed that on one of her attempts to visit her granddaughter, you threatened her life. Is that true?"
"Yes, sir."
"Well, at least you're honest," the judge mused, shifting in his seat and peering at Kimbal. "Why, Mr. Underwood, were these threats made?"
"Mrs. De Jong threatened to take Corra from us by force if necessary. My threats were intended to keep her out of the Jedi Temple."
"And yet, Mr. De Jong, as a Jedi Knight, you are one who is capable of physically harming and killing them, are you not?"
"Only in self-defense, sir," Kimbal answered, feeling his stomach drop slightly.
"Yet the threats were made. As a Jedi Knight, you can legally be classified as a lethal weapon. Therefore, any threat you may have made could in fact be carried out, could it not?"
"Sir, I meant only to protect Corra," Kimbal explained. "I never made a death threat to Mrs. De Jong."
"Then what was said?"
"On many occasions, I simply told her not to return. She persisted and kept returning, each time trying to take Corra from us by force."
"I see. Thank you, Mr. Underwood. You may return to your seat."
Kimbal sat down with a sigh. His cheerful mood had vanished. He finally saw what Lucci was playing at; she would use both Khyte's mental stability plus the fact that Jedi were too dangerous to gain custody over Corra. He squeezed his eyes shut and sighed once more. It was going to be a long week.
A long week....or longer.
Oy, it will not be easy for anyone involved. Nice legal tension there: it paints a pretty honest picture of what's involved in a legal case. Thinking of becoming a lawyer, or have you been reading John Grishom? wink
Again, it's all right if you take your time, but I'm glad you've got a muse again. It appears that you have had a ton of things happen to you recently. I hope for the best for you.
grin Thanks, 7.
There seems to be a bug in my thread. I can't edit the main title anymore. I sent it in to Raven, but he hasn't gotten back to me. If I ask a mod to do it, I won't be able to edit it ever again. And I'd hate asking a mod to do it...
So, yeah. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.
And thanks for reading!!
It could be in the changes in the overall Board code: perhaps with the addition of new features. Maybe making the mainframe think the topic is locked due to lack of posting when it isn't. Just an idea.
Anyways: I have no problem upping this good work at all, Miana. I think it deserves just as much reading as the next fic. And here in the Classic Forum, where the traffic in and out should be light now, every little bit helps. happy
FORWARD!
