FelsGoddess:
Its the Solo confidence. The kind that ensures trouble.
Heh, exactly!
That's a weird problem, the edit thing. I don't know.
yeah, me either! Go figure…
Great update!
Hey thanks
Blondie:
You posted, so of course we forgive you!
Definitely good to know, lol
Did marriage affect Sharr? He wasn't joking around in this post. He was...Serious.
Oh, don’t worry. We were just seeing dry-witted-Sharr at the moment. The crazed-psycho-Sharr will be returning…or will he? Who knows who’s going to survive Hoth…
….
Shinar:
Have mercy and PM an old buddy when you resurrect stories like this!
Consider it done, old friend! Nice to see you again
JSS19 :
i'm glad i did.
Hey I’m glad you did too
Welcome back! (lol, I’m one to talk…)
MJ:
if you don't remember me..
How could I forget you?!
fine but I'M BACK!!!!
HEY, I’m back too! What a co-inky-dink!
Red :
I'm still loving this fic.
Thanks Red!! Hopefully one of these days I’ll finish this sucker hehe
JaJ:
Perfect post.
awwww thankies! I’m so glad it’s being met with approval. Vongsicles soon, but prolly not this update, methinks…
Flowerbee:
Now I feel bad for not having confidence in you.
Lol, funny, I didn’t have confidence in me to finish this guy either… guess I surprised both of us, huh
OK long story short here gang, getting settled into my new place as settled as I can get before I head out to college, leaving Thursday for the far far away land of the Midwest, and it’s been hectic trying to work with my dying comp (so I got a laptop…which is why progress has slowed, it took me awhile to get this guy running and with all the proper protection/programs/internet connections/etc to function…) (and the laptop is also why I skipped formatting half of these replies, too much effort…need to get a mouse! Lol) anyways, my plan to finish this story by the time I start college is still in place, I’ll let you know if it changes (it might, who knows) and thanks for reading and for your patience! New post up momentarily….

RE: The Battle At Hand J/J -----author quick note! 9/15------
***
Wedge Antilles raked a hand through his shaggy graying hair and sighed heavily, a testament to the wear and tear on his conscience at the late hour. He was about to slump forward and rest his forehead on his desk, had it not been for the gentle encircling of arms over his shoulders, holding him upright.
“It’s only 2100, General. Isn’t it a bit early for your bedtime?” Iella whispered in his ear, pressing a quick kiss on his cheekbone.
“I’m getting old,” he grudgingly admitted.
“Please, you’ve been saying that for years. I’m still waiting for it to happen.”
“Sucking up, are we? What do you need now? If you want to go on another shopping spree on Corellia with Mirax, hon, I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait till next week.”
“That wasn’t quite what I was aiming for, but I’ll hold you to it nonetheless,” she smirked, straightening back up and bringing her hands up to massage his shoulders.
He sighed appreciatively, tilting his head against the seat back and closing his eyes.
After a lengthy pause, curiosity got the best of Iella and she had to speak. “Alright. What’s up, Antilles? You seem especially tense today.”
Wedge slowly opened his eyes. “I’ve been thinking-”
“Whoa, don’t hurt yourself,” she chimed in, mischievously.
He continued as if she hadn’t said anything, “Reviewing, double checking plans, making sure there’s as little of a margin for error as possible…waiting here kills me. We’re ready, I know it, but I can’t help but second guess that. We have only the necessary people still planetside, and I feel so guilty sitting here in orbit, doing nothing -”
“Wedge, you’ve done everything in your power -”
“But I’m afraid it’s not enough, Iella!” his sudden outburst caused her tender ministrations to cease, and she swiveled his chair around so they were facing each other. He picked his head off the back of the chair to look her in the eyes. “I keep feeling like I sent Luke, Jaina - everyone to their deaths!”
“You didn’t send them,” she reminded him calmly. “They volunteered.”
“I still let them. I have the ability to tell them to forget it, to tell them to get out of there - but I can’t. Our plans are locked in and …”
“I know, Wedge,” his wife finally said, reaching for his hand. “But you can’t worry about them. You have to trust Luke. He knows what he’s doing, I mean, he‘s certainly saved your hide on a number of occasions. He’d never send Jaina to her death, let alone join her.”
He sent Anakin to his death, unknowingly. What’s to say he won’t be walking unknowingly to his?
“He sent Mara away. That’s testament to his uncertainty about the future,” Wedge countered. “I wanted you to go, too.”
Something sharpened in her eyes, and the firm set of her mouth almost made him regret saying that. “First off, Antilles, no one
sends
Mara anywhere. Secondly, I am here because I think you need me here more than our daughters need me. They’re used to it, they don’t realize the situation.”
“Iella - “
“No. When Diric died…I wanted to die with him. But you kept me from wanting to die - you made me want to live, and I can’t bear to think of who would keep me from dying if I’m not here to watch your back. So don’t tell me that you don’t want me here, Antilles, because quite frankly, even if you didn’t, I don’t give a damn.”
Wedge’s eyes flicked downward, rimmed in dark circles, and Iella almost regretted her harsh outburst - but he needed that reminder. Through the good and the bad, they promised to stand side by side… and she would. She remembered why she had come, and her demeanor lightened. She reached out with her free hand and caught his chin, pulling it up to look her in the face again. “That reminds me. I forgot that before Sy and Myr left, they recorded you a little something.”
A half-puzzled, half look of wonderment crossed his face as she fished in her pockets and finally produced a data card. He accepted it and studied it with awe. “You put them up to this?” he guessed.
“No, I think it was Syal’s idea. I have no idea what they said - shall we put it in and watch it?”
Wedge grinned, and motioned her to sit on his lap. She did, and he spun them back to face his desk. Her slender form settled comfortably against his chest, and Wedge placed the data card in his holoproj system. They were rewarded with the beaming images of their two beautiful daughters, hovering over the desktop.
Syal flipped her long dark blond braid over one shoulder and grinned. “Hi Dad! Myr, say hi.”
Myri tucked a strand of shorter hair behind her ear as she smiled bashfully. “Hi, Daddy! I feel kinda silly talking to this thing like it’s you, but I can pretend real good.”
“I hope Mom didn’t forget to give you this. We told her to give it to you right after we left. But I guess if you’re watching it, she musta remembered. I bet she’s watching it with you, huh? Hi, Mom!”
Myri giggled, waving at the recorder. “Hi, Mommy!”
“Ok, so I bet you’re wondering why we did this, right, Dad? Do you want to explain, Myri, or shall I?”
The two siblings exchanged glances.
“I wanna do it, Sy,” Myri announced, and started ticking off the reasons on her small hands. “First, we wanted to remind you that you need to win this fight over Hoth because you promised us you’d build snow banthas with us, and you haven’t. And second, we wanted to say we love you, in case you forget it. And third?”
“Third was ‘cause you’re the best dad in the whole world and you’ve never lost a fight yet. So don’t disappoint us, kay, Dad?” Syal added.
“Yup,” Myri agreed, nodding enthusiastically. “You’re our hero.”
“Heroes don’t lose. They win. So you have to, see? Well, I hope you’re killing lots of Vong, Dad, because you’re so good at it.”
“We kinda have to go, Daddy, ‘cause Uncle Han and Aunt Leia are waiting for us.”
“Threepio said he’s gonna carry me again, like my personal golden land speeder. Well, Uncle Han said that, but I think it’s funny.”
“I think you look funny sitting on Threepio’s back,” Myri commented.
Syal rolled her blue eyes. “Anyways, I love you so much Dad! I’ll see you soon, okay?”
“I love you too, Daddy! And love you Mommy!”
“Oh, yeah, love you too, Mom!”
They both blew kisses at the screen and then the connection fizzled out.
Wedge found his throat felt like a Star Destroyer was parked on it. His eyes stung, and he tried to swallow, but couldn’t because of lump there. His eyelids slid shut, refusing to let any moisture escape them, and his heart hurt. On second thought, he was so glad to have at least one of his girls there with him…
Force, he missed his daughters! Had it already been…three weeks? Four? He’d lost track.
He had no idea how long they were sitting there, staring at the space that had been occupied by the image of their two beautiful daughters, but Iella finally inhaled shudderingly. “I’m…going to send them off a quick comm, before things get too hairy…”
Wedge’s voice was hoarse. “I can’t -”
“I can’t either,” she choked out. “I think I’ll just catch some shut eye before…”
“That sounds good.”
She hopped off her perch on his lap, and he rose numbly, trying to gather his wits about him.
“Iella.“
She paused at the doorframe to their bedroom, turning to face him, and his heart broke all over again at seeing the single crystal tear drop winding its way down her face.
Without saying a word, he drew her into his arms, crushing her close, breathing in the scent of her hair and needing the press of her body, the assurance that she was real. They embraced briefly, and he released her.
I hate this war and what it’s done to my family!
Ultimately, the stress and exhaustion were preventing him from reigning in his control, and Wedge followed her to their bedroom, kicked off his boots, and crashed.
***
“Jagged.”
Jag’s dull glance flicked from the view port to his father and back again. Soontir’s brow furrowed as he took in the dark rings around his eyes, the slightly gaunt look his face held.
“It’s not going to change.”
Jag blinked, the only acknowledgement the older Fel received.
“Son, you can stare down that planet till your eyes pop out of your skull, and you won’t do anything to help her.”
“I can’t sleep.”
“Neither can I,” the older Fel agreed, settling into a seat next to him. “Take something for it?”
The green eyed glance that eyed him was annoyed. “We’re on priority red alert. You can’t take sleeping drugs.”
“You need your sleep. You can’t protect her if you can’t think clearly or act quickly, and you’ll only distract her by worrying about you. I can make certain allowances.”
“No.”
The Baron tried a different approach. “Zena sent a holo today.”
“Did she.” It wasn’t a question, just a poor automatic response. This was characteristic of the old Jagged, not the new one, just married, turning Rebel.
Silence filled the room.
“Jagged, stop.”
Pause.
“Stop what, Father?”
“You’re acting like she’s already dead.”
Fire filled his son for the first time in days, and Jag’s hot response was immediate, turning an incredulous, indignant gaze to his father. “I am not!”
“You are moping.”
“I do not mope,” he insisted, his steely gaze returning to the view port.
“Have faith in your bride. She
is
Han Solo’s daughter.”
A long exhale escaped his lips, and Jag’s face maintained its glum expression. “You didn’t hear the things she was saying. She doubted herself - I’ve never known her to doubt herself!”
“Jagged, she
is
mortal.”
The older Fel’s comment hit him like a blow to the stomach, and he froze.
Jaina is…mortal?
The thought hadn’t occurred to him in ages. She was his Goddess, afterall, the poster Goddess of the New Republic…
She can’t be mortal…
“Thanks, Father. That’s reassuring.”
Jaina is mortal?
“The best you can do for her now, Jagged, is to steel yourself to fight your hardest, tooth and nail, to maintain the aerial battle. Work with the coordinators, learn the strategies – share yours with them!”
“I don’t want her to die,” Jag admitted softly.
Suddenly, he was hauled to his feet by two strong arms, and suddenly he was staring his father in the eye. The General had a steely, stern expression, mirrored in his one eye, and Jag braced himself.
“Attention!” his father bellowed, and immediately, his Chiss training took over. Jag snapped straight, his expression unreadable.
“Snap out of it, Colonel!” his father declared. “Stop feeling sorry for yourself!”
Jag froze, his mind locking on that one thought.
I am feeling sorry for myself…
“Sir, yes, sir!” Jag returned crisply, matching his father’s volume.
“Get some rest, soldier!”
Something changed in his son, the General could see it in his eyes. Something in the brilliant jade depths had shifted, strengthened, replaced that Rebel softness with the Chiss rock his father knew lay beneath the surface.
“Sir, yes, sir!”
“Dismissed.”

sorry it's short, but next time I guarantee Vongsicles! Have one to pass the time, hmm?

Or perhaps some Lomin Ale? I know a certain band of troublemakers happen to prefer that refreshment...

Great post!
Wedge and Iella were adorable.
Plus Syal and Mryi leaving Wedge a message, so sweet! Brought tears to my eyes.
And then Jag! Made me giggle with his Father going all General on him.
That'd be interesting to have around the house.
I think I'll pass on those Vongsicles and grab a Lomin Ale. *opens the bottle with a satifying click* It's been a while. *starts drinking it* Mmm. As good as I remember.
I can't wait for more.

Pass on the vongcicles, I'll take a lomin ale instead.
Iella and Wedge were sweet. Nice bit of mush there.
Syal and Myri were just adorable. Loved that scene.
But poor Jag!
Why is he the most tortured character in fanfic? Every fanfic author I read has tortured the guy at one time or another.
Can't wait for more!
