Ok. Here it is.

Padme's heart was racing as she prepared to enter the Chancellor's office.

It had nothing to do with Palpatine or the Jedi Masters inside, and it had everything to do with a certain man who had recently taken the trials and passed them. The newest Jedi Knight among the Order.

Her husband was inside that room.

Even without the Force she could always tell when Anakin was near. Her pulse would start to race and her heart would beat so furiously that it should have broken her chest. Whenever Anakin was near, Padme felt whole again.

Two years today, she thought, a warm rush of love and passion sweeping over her. Two years ago to the day she and Anakin had been secretly married.

For two years they had loved one another from afar, with scattered visits whenever Anakin could sneak away to Naboo to see her. He didn't make it there nearly enough for either of them, but it was enough to keep Padme going.

Anakin was enough to keep her going.

Now, though, Padme had returned to Coruscant. Nute Gunray had been captured. There was no longer any direct threat to Padme's life, and so she had chosen to make the journey to Coruscant to address the Senate about the Clone Wars. Or so she would have everyone believe.

For the first time in her life, Padme Amidala cared more about her personal life than her political one. While the Clone Wars were important to her, she understood what was at stake, nothing could ever mean as much to her as Anakin Skywalker did.

And she would see him, for the first time in over six months, as soon as she walked through the door.

She wanted to reach a hand up to check her hair, or ask Dorme for a reflector to be sure that she looked all right, but she knew that she couldn't. If she did, they would wonder why she cared so much about her appearance in front of a room full of Senators and Jedi.

She couldn't tell them that it was only one Jedi who she wanted to look nice for.

Anakin had been away from the Temple when Nute Gunray was found, leading a group of the clone soldiers on a mission into Separatist territory. He had not been there to act, but Padme had.

The message that Intelligence had tracked the leader of the Trade Federation had come to her while on Naboo. Padme had not hesitated. She had gone immediately to Queen Jamilla and had been given a strike force to help her take out Gunray. Jamilla had pleaded for her to let Captain Typho lead the strike, but Padme had refused. Gunray had tired to kill her too many times for her liking, she wanted the pleasure of bringing him down herself.

They had infiltrated the base on Corellia. Well outside of Cornet City, it was where Gunray and his advisors had retreated into hiding after the battle of Genosis. It had been the perfect place for their activities to go unnoticed.

With the element of surprise on her side, Padme and her strike team had apprehended not only Gunray, but his advisor Daultay Dofine, as well. Despite their small victory, Gunray's loyal chairman Rune Haako had not been apprehended, and Padme knew that with Gunray a prisoner of the Republic, Haako would assume control of the Trade Federation and their droid armies.

As the Chancellor's aide announced her arrival, Padme wondered briefly if Anakin would be angry with her for the daring strike. She had risked her life again when others could have done it for her, something she knew he hated. With so much danger from the war going on around them, Anakin did not like to see her placing herself in even more danger.

She was his wife, after all.

But this had been the best decision, Padme was sure of that. Nute Gunray had to be stopped, and with him out of the picture, the Trade Federation was that much weaker. And it didn't hurt that now there was no reason for her to stay on Naboo.

Now, she could finally be the one to visit Anakin, to see his eyes light up as she entered the room after so many months of separation. She recognized that there would be added challenges to this new arrangement, but she wasn't worried.

She could face them, face anything, for Anakin.

The door slid open and for a moment Padme froze in place, her breath caught in her throat. She was finally going to see Anakin again.

I didn't expect it, she thought with a wistful smile. I didn't look for it, but he consumes my entire being.

She strolled into the room just as Palpatine and the others rose in greeting. Mas Amedda and Bail Organa stood on either side of him, and the quartet of Jedi turned to face her.

"Welcome, Senator Amidala," Palpatine said, smiling broadly.

"Thank you, Chancellor," Padme said, drawing on all of her strength not to look at Anakin yet. For she knew if she did, she would not be able to keep herself from running into his arms.

"Senator Amidala," Bail said, smiling as he stepped forward to kiss her hand. Padme could almost see Anakin gritting his teeth behind her, but she smiled back at Bail, then nodded at Amedda, and turned to greet the Jedi Masters before her.

"Master Yoda," she said, unable to keep the genuine smile off her face. "It is a pleasure to see you again."

The small, green Jedi Master pointedly tapped her with his small cane. "Seeing you again makes my heart fill with warm feelings, young Senator," Yoda replied. "Glad that you have come back to Coruscant I am."

"Thank you, Master Yoda," Padme said. She bowed slightly to Master Windu, then turned to Obi-Wan Kenobi. "Master Kenobi, it has been too long."

"Indeed, Senator Amidala," Obi-Wan agreed with a small smile, bowing his head. "It has."

I wonder if he would still be glad to see me if he knew I was actually Senator Skywalker, Padme thought sadly. She doubted that would be the case.

And then there was no one left but him.

Her Anakin.

He bowed to her, and she found it ridiculous that her own husband was practicing such formalities, but she knew they were necessary. He straightened, and their eyes met, intense chips of ice blue boring into her with a storm of barely controlled emotions.

She couldn't breathe.

She wanted so badly to take him in her arms, to lay her head against his chest, to kiss him and have him kiss her back.

But that was not possible, not yet.

Two years they had been married, and she could not even greet her husband the way she wanted to, the way she longed to.

Being careful to keep a steady voice, Padme smiled. "Hello, Jedi Skywalker."

Anakin's face remained calm, but his eyes ... his eyes were afire with love and desire and Padme had to force herself not to think about how handsome he had grown in the months that they were apart. She had to watch her thoughts, guard her emotions, as best she could when other Jedi were around. Their secret could not be found out.

"Hello, Senator," he replied, a polite smile on his lips. It did not escape Padme's attention that he did not call her Senator Amidala. He never did, because she was no longer that woman. But he cold hardly call her Padme in front of the others, much less Senator Skywalker.

Padme could just imagine the looks on the faces of those gathered if he called her that.

"I heard that you have passed the trials," Padme said, unable to keep the pride out of her voice. "You have my deepest congratulations."

Anakin's chest puffed up slightly. "Thank you, M'Lady. And congratulations on apprehending Viceroy Gunray."

There was something akin to disapproval in his tone, but Padme could see that he truly was proud of her, that he was proud his wife was such a capable woman.

"Thank you," she replied softly.

"It was a dangerous risk you took, M'Lady," Palpatine admonished. "You could have been killed in the strike."

Padme lifted her chin ever so slightly. "But I was not," she reminded him gently. "And Viceroy Gunray is now in our custody."

"A small victory in times of great peril," Mace Windu admitted with the faintest trace if a smile.

"You should have let the Jedi take care of it, M'Lady," Anakin said evenly. "A battlefield is no place for a senator." Seeing that she was about to object, he amended wryly. "Even for one as ... adaptable as you."

Master Kenobi turned his cheek, but Padme saw a smile tugging at his lips.

"Perhaps you are right, Jedi Skywalker," Padme conceded. "But what is done is done."

With that subject closed, Palpatine stepped around his desk to take Padme's hands in hers. He kissed them both, his eyes twinkling brightly. "It is good to see your face, M'Lady. It's almost like seeing home again."

Padme smiled at him. "I assure you, Chancellor, you would find Naboo much more beautiful than I."

She didn't need to see his face to know Anakin disagreed with that.

"I would think that impossible," Palpatine said warmly. He stepped back and glanced at Organa and Amedda. "I could call a special session of the Senate this evening if you would like to address them immediately."

Padme started. Tonight? On her anniversary?

But of course, Palpatine didn't know that, no one did. No one save her and Anakin.

"I find my journey has left me weary," she said in a neutral tone. "I think I should like to retire early this evening, and rise refreshed and ready to address the Senate in the morning."

She couldn't be sure, but she thought she heard Anakin breath a sigh of relief behind her. He, too, wanted to be together on their anniversary.

Palpatine nodded. "Very well. I will have the Senators gathered to hear your speech in the morning."

Padme bowed. "Thank you, Chancellor. Now, by your leave, I'd like to retire."

"Of course, M'Lady," Palpatine said, bowing his head.

Padme bid farewell to the Jedi, her eyes hesitating briefly on Anakin. He gave her a small, imperceptible nod, and she felt her heart soar. He would come to her.

She strolled out of the office, feeling happier than she had in months.

Perhaps things were starting to look better, after all.

Wow. This is such a wonderful story, and I'll follow along. The thing that attracted my attention, though, was the fact that the fic I'm writing is also entitled "Shadows".

Don't bother. I'll just have to be creative and think of something new. wink

Wow, that must be so hard for Anakin and Padme. Two years and they still have to keep their love a secret. I imagine they don't get to spend much time together. sad

But it was a great post! grin I loved the little silent communications Anakin and Padme were having that no one (hopefully) noticed. I liked Jealous Anakin a lot...hehe.

Post more soon!

A lone figure dressed in black crept across the roof of the Imperial Senate apartment, moving in the shadows, slinking along with the grace and stealth of a Tuskan wildcat.

The figure leapt over the large gap between buildings, landing easily and without breaking stride. Stalking along the sloped roof, he made his way to the edge of the building and peered over at the balcony below. It was a ten meter drop, but not impossible.

Bending his knees slightly, he leapt, falling the distance quickly, and landing lithely, showing no signs of the impact. He straightened, gazing through the transparisteel before him. The blinds were closed, but a gentle nudge with his thoughts fixed that and he found the window was already open slightly.

Smiling, he reached out with his mind and pushed it the rest of the way open, then slipped through the opening and into the dark room. He left the window open, in case he had to make a quick escape, and turned towards the bed where the woman slept.

He tiptoed through the dim room, careful to avoid the trunks full of clothing and the ornamental decor of the room, letting his memory guide his steps around the furniture. He knelt beside the bed, his heart racing and his breath catching in his throat as he reached out a hand to stroke her dark hair.

The woman stirred and rolled towards him, and her dark eyes fluttered open. He saw the flicker of relief there, and felt the overwhelming wave of joy at his presence, which made him grin. She smiled at him and sat up, letting the bedsheet fall away to reveal the white nightgown he had always liked best.

"Hello, Anakin," she said softly.

The sound of her voice, hearing her say his name, feeling her arms wrap around him as she drew him near, was overpowering. Anakin Skywalker felt tears of joy stinging his eyes, and he didn't care. All he cared about was that he was with Padmé again. With his wife.

"Hello, Padmé," he whispered huskily, pulling back to study her beautiful face. His chest tightened, as it always did, when he felt the love and passion radiating off of her, all directed at him. He caressed her cheek gently with his hand, memorizing her features, his throat tight with emotion.

He tilted his head down and she lifted her chin, and a wave of dizzying passion swept over him as their lips met. All thought, all purpose faded as the entire galaxy slipped away. If ever Anakin had any doubts about the sacrifice marrying her would mean, all he had to do was kiss her to know he had made the right decision. One kiss and there was nothing but Padmé. One kiss and there was life, love, happiness, to such a degree that it was mind-blowing. For one kiss from Padmé, Anakin would fight the entire galaxy on his own.

He would die for just one more kiss from her.

"I love you," he murmured against her lips.

"I love you, too," she whispered, pulling back and favoring him with a broad smile that made his heart soar. She threw her arms around him again, clutching him fiercely. "Oh, Ani, I've missed you so much!" she cried.

It didn't bother Anakin anymore to have her call him that, to have her call him by his childhood nickname. When she said it there was so much love and affection behind it that it filled him with a warmth so deep it penetrated the darkest parts of his soul.

"I missed you, too, Padmé," he said, holding her tightly, savoring the feel of her in his arms, the smell of her hair, the softness of her cheek against his. "So much."

"I was going crazy without you," Padmé said softly. "I couldn't stand being away from you any longer than I had been."

"Is that why you went after Gunray?" Anakin asked, mixed emotions welling up inside of him. He felt Padmé stiffen slightly in his arms, felt her try to pull back to look at him, but he had missed her arms so much over the past few months that he could not bear to let her go, so her held her closer.

"I'm sorry if I upset you," she whispered, relaxing into his chest. "I know it was risky, and I know you worry for my safety. But I worry for yours, too, you know, and you're still out there fighting. On the front lines, I might add."

"Well, I kind of have to, Padmé," Anakin replied quietly. "I am a Jedi."

At least for now, he added silently.

"I know," Padmé said, hugging him even tighter. "I'm sorry if you don't approve of what I did, but it was the right thing to do. I'm sure of that."

"So am I," Anakin said.

This time Padmé did pull out of his grasp, her features showing surprise. "You are?" she asked in disbelief.

Anakin couldn't help but smile. "I am. You captured Gunray, which weakens the Trade Federation, which weakens the Separatists." It also meant that his job was a little easier, that maybe he wouldn't have to be constantly shipped off on missions for the Order as the Clone Wars rages around them. "Besides," he added lightly. "Now that Gunray's out of the way, you and I can see more of one another."

Padmé's eyes lit up with a light that Anakin couldn't even begin to describe. "I think that's the most important reason of all."

"So do I, angel," Anakin said softly, kissing her cheek. "So do I." He pulled back, smiling. "I have something for you," he announced, reaching into his robes. "I didn't get to wrap it, because Obi-Wan would have become suspicious."

"That's all right," Padmé assured him.

He kept his fist closed around the present, taking her hand in his and sliding it onto her palm. He curled her fingers over it and let go of her hand, watching her face as she opened her hand. Her eyes went wide and he heard a soft gasp of amazement escape her lips.

"Oh, Ani," she breathed.

"Do you like it?" Anakin asked quietly. "I got it while Obi-Wan and I were on Alderaan meeting with Senator Organa. It's Alderaanian diamond."

"I know," Padme said softly, raising her face to him, her eyes shimmering. "Ani, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."

"It pales in comparison to you," Anakin said, gazing into her eyes, the heat and fire coursing between them almost palpable in the Force. "Here, let me help you put it on."

Padmé turned her back to him, letting him reach around her neck, his fingers grazing her collarbone as he secured the necklace. He felt her shiver under his touch, and smiled at the thoughts he was getting from her, before leaning his head down to place a soft kiss on the side of neck, relishing the way she leaned into his caress.

"How did you get away from the Jedi?" Padmé murmured.

Anakin continued trailing soft kisses down her neck and onto her shoulders, sliding the collar of her nightgown down. "I went out the window and ran across the rooftops."

Padmé giggled in his ear, the sound making his heart skip a beat, but not as much as the feel of her chest heaving slightly against his as she shook with quiet laughter. "You could have just taken a speeder, you know."

"Too noisy," Anakin explained, kissing her collar bone. "Besides, where's the fun in that?"

"Good point," Padmé said softly, her eyes sparkling with a look he knew all too well. She leaned back onto the bed, drawing him down with her, and looped her arms about his neck. "I think doing things the fun way is better than the rational way."

Anakin chuckled. "Me, too."

He bent his head, capturing her lips in a kiss filled with all the passion and desire and love that she brought out in him, that she gave life to within him. He heard her sigh happily against his lips, felt the soft tickle of her breath on his cheeks, and he lost himself in his wife's kisses.
