Anakin had never felt nervous in the office of Chancellor Palpatine until now. He understood the power the man wielded, he respected the office itself, but he had always felt as if he was in the company of a friend whenever he came to see Palpatine.
So why was he nervous now?
The answer was so obvious it was ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as his reason for being there.
He had come to tell Palpatine about Padmé.
He knew it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but it felt right. Palpatine had been a mentor to him over the years since he had come to the Jedi temple, he'd always made time to speak to him privately, offering sound and valued advice. Anakin always felt welcome there, always felt as if Palpatine genuinely cared about him. The older man's guidance had helped him struggle through the years of impatiently waiting to take the trials.
Anakin would never forget the proud look that had crossed Palpatine's face when he had come before him after his Knighting Ceremony, his Padawan braid finally cut off. The man had embraced him without reservation, and his stream of compliments had made Anakin blush.
What really made him swell with affection for the man, though, was that he had meant every one of those compliments.
In some ways, Palpatine had seemed prouder than Obi-Wan that day. Logically, Anakin knew that wasn't the case, but it stung that Palpatine had managed to show his proud exuberance and Obi-Wan had not.
There was no denying that he had been proud, anyone could have seen that, and Anakin had sensed just how deep those emotions went in the man as his braid was cut off, but Obi-Wan had kept them concealed, and that in itself was like a blow to the stomach for Anakin.
Perhaps that was why he so often sought Palpatine's company, to give him what Obi-Wan could not, or would not.
"Ah, my young Jedi," Palpatine said, smiling warmly, the affection in his tone not unlike that of a kind grandfather. "I was hoping you would come by to see me today."
"I'm grateful that you found time to see me, Your Excellency," Anakin responded with a small bow of his head. "I wanted to speak with you about something."
"I will always have time to see you, Anakin," Palpatine replied. "Even if it's just so you can vent your frustrations."
"Thank you, Your Excellency."
"Think nothing of it, my young Jedi," Palpatine said, smiling warmly. "Now, you said you had something you wanted to speak to me about?"
Anakin swallowed. There was no backing out now. Once he opened his mouth and said the words he intended to say, he could not take them back. His secret, his and Padmé's secret, would be in Palpatine's hands.
They had decided from the start only to tell the people they knew they could trust completely, and although there was no one Anakin trusted more than Obi-Wan, he knew he could never tell his former Master.
He could, however, tell Palpatine.
"Padmé and I," he began hoarsely. "I mean, Senator Amidala and I..."
"Go on," Palpatine urged gently, smiling kindly, and a warmth of reassurance seemed to flood through Anakin, as if some silent whisper was compelling him to speak what he kept secret in his heart.
"Senator Amidala and I were married just after the Battle of Genosis."
There. He'd said it.
Palpatine blinked, astonishment playing across his face, although perhaps he was not quite as surprised as he should have been.
"I see."
Anakin bit his lip, hard. He didn't want Palpatine to be disappointed in him, he really didn't. But he supposed if that was what was going to happen, it would help prepare him for when he eventually had to face Obi-Wan.
"I know it was rash," Anakin said weakly, hanging his head. "I know it was against the Jedi Code, I know it was deceitful and I know that lying about it was wrong, but I-"
"No," Palpatine said softly. "No, Anakin, it wasn't wrong."
Anakin looked up in surprise to find the Chancellor was looking at him with a compassionate expression, one full of sympathy and understanding.
"You don't think so?" he asked.
Palpatine smiled faintly, an old man's wisdom shining in his eyes. "No, my dear boy, I don't. You and Senator Amidala have loved one another ever since Naboo all those years ago. I saw it then, and I have seen it every time that I've witnessed the two of you together since then." His eyes twinkled a bit mischeviously. "I thought I saw it last night when she arrived in my office."
"Our two year anniversary was yesterday," Anakin explained, feeling a bit sheepish.
"I see," Palpatine smiled broadly. "I assume you found a way to sneak out of the temple to be with her, then?"
"Yes, Your Excellency," Anakin confirmed ruefully.
"Good," Palpatine said, nodding thoughtfully, as if he was pondering something. "It wouldn't be fair to keep you two apart on your anniversary."
"Then you don't think our marriage wrong?" Anakin asked in relief.
"Anakin, I think it's more right than anything I have ever encountered," Palpatine replied with a broad, enigmatic smile. "You and Senator Amidala are meant to be together. Although, I suppose it would be Senator Skywalker now, wouldn't it?"
Anakin smiled, luxuriating in the sound of that name, the name that Padmé was meant to bear. "Yes, it would."
"It has a nice ring to it," Palpatine said with a small smile. His smile faded, though, and he looked at Anakin with a serious gaze. "I don't know how you managed to persuade Obi-Wan Kenobi not to go to the Council with this. I would have thought he would do that immediately."
Anakin shifted uncomfortably. "He probably would," he conceded. "If he knew."
Realization set in on Palpatine's face. "Who does know, then, other than me?"
"Padmé's family," Anakin replied.
"That's all?" Palpatine asked carefully.
Anakin nodded.
"My dear boy," Palpatine murmured. "I don't know how you've been able to bear it. Keeping it a secret all these years, especially from Master Kenobi. He is your former Master. Your dearest companion."
"He wouldn't understand," Anakin said dully. "He would say I was foolish and impulsive and naive and he would try to force me to annul my marriage to Padmé."
"And you would not do that?" Palpatine asked with sly curiousity. "Not even if they expel you from the Order for it?"
"Not even if they were to condemn me to a thousand deaths," Anakin said fiercely. "I love her, and I will not let anyone stand between us."
"I'm glad to hear it, young one," Palpatine said, sounding pleased. "You shouldn't let anyone come between you, no matter what. Love is a very powerful thing, Anakin. It is the only thing worth dying for. There is nothing that one should not be willing to do for the one they love."
Anakin nodded his agreement. "I would capture all of the stars in her name."
"I'm quite certain that won't be necessary," Palpatine said, smiling in amusement. "But I am sure she would appreciate the sentiment."
"I must ask you to keep what I have told you in the strictest confidence," Anakin implored. "If the Council were to find out..."
"No need to worry, dear boy," Palpatine promised gently. "I will not reveal your secret to a living soul."
"Thank you," Anakin said, feeling a surge of warm gratitude for the Chancellor. "I must be going now, Your Excellency. Master Kenobi is expecting me, and he can be rather testy when I'm late."
"Of course," Palpatine chuckled. "We wouldn't want to upset Master Kenobi, now would we?"
Something behind those words strung Anakin as odd, but he shook it off. "Thank you for seeing me, Your Excellency. It feels as if a great burden has been lifted form my shoulders after confessing my secret to you."
"You should feel free to come speak with me whenever you wish to, Anakin," Palpatine urged. "Even if it's something trivial."
Anakin nodded. "I will. Thank you."
He turned to go and was at the door when Palpatine stopped him. "Anakin?"
Anakin glanced back at the older man, who was gazing at him with a tender affection. "Yes?" he asked.
"I want you to know, no matter what happens, what others might say when they learn of your marriage, I believe in my heart of hearts that you've done the right thing. I truly believe that you two are meant to be together. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
Anakin felt his heart soar at the reassurance. "Thank you, Your Excellency. You have no idea how much that means to me."
He slipped out into the hallway, strolling off before the door even began to close.
Had he waited a moment's pause, he would have heard Palpatine whisper ominously, "And neither do you, my young apprentice."

Ahhhh! It's scenes like these that I both love and loathe. I'm torn between wanting to slap Palpatine silly and congratulate him for his brilliance at fooling
everyone
. And this was definitely one of the best takes on the Anakin/Palpatine relationship I've seen. Good job.
Just out of curiosity, how far are you taking this story? Are we going to see Anakin's fall or at least the beginning of it? I guess you probably shouldn't reveal too much; I was just wondering.
Anyway, great post! I always look forward to updates.

This last post was awesome! OMG! I was jumping up and down on my chair telling Anakin to not tell Palpatine, that it will be a great mistake if he did. This is just like I imagine Episode 3 being. You guys have it all down just like I imagined. BRAVO!!!

Wow! Great post! Though I still think Palpatine is too devious for his own good. Well, he always was.

Thanks, though, that's what we were going for
Wanted to convey why Anakin could have ever trusted him, and at the same time show how Palpatine maniuplated him
