Here it is, guys grin Sorry about the delay- after I sent the final copy to Kathryn for editing I had some trouble accessing my account tongue But never fear, it's been fixed, so enjoy the post! wink
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stumbling, Darra Thel-Tanis exhaled sharply as her ankle twisted under her, but she gritted her teeth and pushed on, making her way through the dark alleys of Calna Muun as quickly as possible, glancing over her shoulder nervously.
He was here, she could feel it.
And if she could feel his presence, then she knew that he could feel hers.
Faster, she urged her body, even as her legs ached in protest. Got to keep moving.
Her last hiding place on Ansion had been jeopardized, so she had fled the planet for Agamar, hidden in the cargo hold of delivery ship. She was exhausted and hungry, her body was pushing itself past its limits, even for a Jedi. The injuries that she had sustained evading the stormtroopers on Ansion had yet to heal properly, and she was covered from head to toe with bruises, cuts and scrapes.
Needless to say, her strength was fading fast.
A tingle of the Force shot up her spine, and she hurled herself around the next corner, ignoring the pain that exploded through her legs. He was close, so very close! She had to hide, had to run, had to escape him!
Shavit, she thought wildly, sensing him drawing near. Shavit, shavit, shavit!
She could hear his footsteps now, thick armored boots clanking on the ground as he moved with all the grace of a Corellian sand panther. Panting, Darra leaned up against the wall of the alley, her hands shaking as she reached for her lightsaber.
She ignited it just as the Dark Lord of Sith turned the corner in front of her, and as her blade lept to life in her hands, Darth Vader paused, staring back at her with that emotionless armored mask.
A Jedi knows no fear, she repeated the mandate to herself shakily. There is no death, only the Force. I am not afraid...
It was a lie, of course, she was shaking in her boots. Or she would have been, if she'd been wearing any. Hers had finally gotten too torn up to wear anymore on Ansion, so she'd been forced to make due with a pair of leather slippers that she'd swiped from a Quarren vendor.
A Jedi resorting to stealing, it would have been almost comical in any other situation.
"You won't be needing that," Vader sneered, giving a small flick of his fingers, and her lightsaber flew out of her grasp to smack into the wall behind her, clattering lifelessly at her feet.
"You'd kill an unarmed woman?" Darra grunted through her clenched teeth.
Vader made a noise that she supposed was a chuckle, but it sounded like booming thunder in her ears. "A Jedi is never really unarmed," he said coolly. "Wouldn't you agree?"
Darra opened her mouth to respond, but found that she couldn't. Her throat was suddenly painfully tight, her trachea felt as if it were being crushed by invisible hands. Her chest heaved, frantically trying to force air into her lungs, but it was no use.
Doubling over, she gasped, glaring at Vader through narrowed eyes. His dark form wavered in front of her as her vision blurred, the lack of oxygen affecting her senses. No, she thought desperately. No, I will not die this way!
Drawing on the Force with an intensity that she never had before, she grabbed onto the phantom hands at her throat and ripped them away violently. A rush of precious air burst into her lungs and she slid to her knees, panting hard.
"An interesting tactic," Vader commented, his inhuman voice echoing in her ears. "Your effort was admirable, but all together futile."
Harsh winds suddenly leapt to life around her, slashing at her face, searing across her bare skin like flames. Tiny shards of durasteel and other debris littering the alleyway rained down upon her, piercing her skin, and she cried out, unable to keep her composure in the face of the added agony.
Distantly, above the roar of the Force winds lashing out at her vulnerable body, she heard the familiar snap-hiss of a lightsaber being ignited, and she knew that she was finished.
"Prepare to die, Jedi," Vader snarled, his weapon casting a blood-red pallor across the ground as a piece of durasteel slashed her cheek.
"Ani, please!" she gasped out, before she even realized she was saying anything.
To her disbelief, Vader actually hesitated, his blade moving away from her throat for a moment and the winds dying down. She panted hard, clutching her side as she lifted her head to look at him, but that hideous black mask kept his expression hidden from her.
Why did you stop? she wondered, a faint surge of hope rising up in her heart, despite her efforts to smother it out. Why haven't you killed me yet?
From the way he was staring at his gloved hand as it clenched the black hilt of his blood red lightsaber, Vader was asking himself the exact same thing.
Finally, after a long moment of tense silence, Vader looked away. "Get out of my sight," he growled, his voice harsh and mechanical.
Darra blinked, taken aback. "What?" she gasped out, wincing as her ribs began to ache again.
"Go now," he ordered with a cold snarl, and she could almost see those ice blue eyes flashing beneath his helmet. "This once I will grant you your life. When we meet again, I will not be so lenient," he warned coolly. "It would be wise to ensure that we do not cross paths in the future."
For a long moment she stared at him in disbelief, and then she shook off her reverie. Swallowing hard, she began limping towards the mouth of the alley. Vader didn't even spare her so much as a glance as she slipped past him. When she reached the street behind him, Darra paused and look back of her shoulder at the black silhouette of the Sith Lord.
"Thank you," she whispered, and then she turned and ran.
She would never know why he had let her live. Perhaps some memory of the time they'd spent together at the Temple during their youth had suddenly resurfaced, perhaps he'd felt some sort of pity for her in her disheveled state.
Or perhaps he'd merely seen something in her that reminded him of his beloved Senator Amidala.
Regardless of his reason for letting her escape, Darra knew one thing for certain.
There was still a flicker of the boy she once knew inside of the Dark One, and someday that was going to be the Empire's undoing.
She stumbled through the streets blindly, dizzy and weak, with no concept of where she was or where she was going. She only knew she had to get away, to put as much distance between herself and Vader, just in case the Sith Lord changed his mind about letting her go free.
After a few minutes of running, though, she found she could go no further. Swaying to a halt, she reached out a hand to brace herself on the wall of a nearby building, but she was too weak to stay on her feet.
Her legs gave out beneath her, and she crumpled to the ground with a groan, the world around her spinning in and out of focus. Her head was throbbing and her throat was parched, screaming for a drink of water, but she was too weak to even make it to her knees.
Distantly, she heard a pair of boots approaching, and for a moment she dreaded that Vader had come after her, but the next thing she knew she was being rolled over onto her back. Blinking groggily, she peered up at the figure leaning over her through half-closed eyes.
"Can you stand?" a male voice, kind and gentle, asked her.
Unable to find her voice, she shook her head.
"I'll have to carry you, then," the man said, and she felt him scooping her up into his arms easily enough. "My home is just down the way a bit, you'll be safe there."
Her rescuer was a young man, only a year or two older than she was, with dark auburn hair that had been pulled back at the nape of his neck. He was quite handsome, she supposed, but what struck her about him the most were his eyes. They were dark green, two shades deeper than her own emerald eyes were, but they were strangely compelling. When she looked into them, she felt as if she were being sucked into a black hole, drowning in those eyes.
Feeling weak, she closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, drawing on the Force to strengthen her battered body. When she opened her eyes again a few minutes later, she found that they had reached a small, but inviting looking dwelling. The style of the architecture was unique, like nothing she had ever seen before, and she was about to inquire about whether or not he'd done it himself when the man opened the door and carried her inside.
It was a small home, built for one or two people, three at the most, but it was clean and there was a feeling of comfort about the place. The living area was filled with trinkets and decorations that reflected the young man's personal tastes, and Dara took it all in with wide eyes. She had never had such possessions, her room at the Temple had held only the barest of necessities.
"Let me get you some water," the man said as he lowered her down onto the couch. He disappeared into the other room for a moment, then returned with a tall glass of the shimmering liquid. "What's your name?"
"Darra," she managed, and even that small amount of speaking strained her hoarse throat. "Darra Thel-Tanis."
"Well, Darra Thel-Tanis," the man smiled warmly, offering her the glass. "My name is Adurin."
"Are you hungry?" Adurin asked, and when she nodded he smiled down at her. "I'll get you something to eat."
"Thank you," Darra rasped, gulping down the blessedly cold water. She closed her eyes, leaning against the back of the couch, savoring the moment of relaxation. How long had it been since she'd been able to just sit and breathe? It seemed like a lifetime.
When Adurin returned, he was carrying a bowl or soup, and her stomach growled as the aroma filled her nostrils. "I see you really are hungry," Adurin chuckled.
"Starving," she corrected, taking an experimental sip of the soup. It was a little bland, but hot and it slid down her throat easily. It had been so long since she'd had real food... the past few weeks had been nothing but a blur as she tried to stay one step ahead of the Empire at every turn. It had been months since the Purges began on Coruscant with the destruction of the Jedi Temple, and with each passing day it seemed that the galaxy became a darker and darker place.
"You're a Jedi, aren't you?"
Darra stiffened, her head snapping up in surprise. "What makes you say that?" she demanded, eyes narrowing sharply. She no longer dressed in the traditional garb of the Jedi, after the fall of Eriadu and Kamparas it had become painfully clear to the survivors that they had to go underground. It was their only chance for survival now.
Adurin raised his hands complacently, his eyes darting to her side nervously. Glancing down, Darra blushed faintly, removing her hand from the hilt of her lightsaber. It had become instinct, really, to reach for her weapon when she'd felt threatened now.
"I mean you no harm," Adurin assured her. "I would never betray your trust that way. You have my word on that."
For some reason, Darra believed him, even without reaching out with the Force. There was something about this young man that she couldn't explain, she just knew that she could trust him. "I'm sorry," she apologized with a shake of her head. "It's been a trying time for us. My people are scattered throughout the galaxy, those of us that still live that is, and we are being hunted. It's become necessary to be suspicious of everyone we meet."
"I understand," Adurin replied with a weak smile. "I imagine it's been difficult for you."
"Yes," she said softly, a stab of grief tugging at her heart as the memories of the Eriadu base burning came to mind. "It has."
So many friends and allies, Jedi that she had known all of her life, that she had worked beside and trained with from infancy, were dead.
How long until the Jedi Order itself is nothing but ashes? she asked herself with a shudder. She didn't know the answer, and she didn't want to, for the truth was she feared it might be sooner than anyone thought.
"You're welcome to stay here," Adurin offered, then blushed a little. "I mean, if you're tired of running, that is. The Empire doesn't bother with us much out here, so you'd probably be safer than most places."
Darra opened her mouth to respond that the Empire had already tracked her here once, then thought better of it. Vader had let her escape once, and while she didn't think he would be so generous a second time, she had a feeling that he wasn't going to be actively pursuing her.
And it would be foolish for me to stay in the place where I was last cornered, she mused thoughtfully. This is the last place they would ever think to look for me.
She had no delusions about the fact that one day she would be found, but through the Force she knew that by staying here with Adurin she would at least be able to buy herself some time.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "I think I may take you up on that offer."
Adurin seemed quite glad to hear that, and for some reason that pleased her. It was surprising to have someone want her around, but she found it was a pleasant sort of surprise.
"Won't your neighbors wonder who I am and where I came from?" she asked, frowning.
"We'll think of something," Adurin replied with a shrug. "I can always tell them that we met during my monthly trips to Oorn Tchis, and you've come back with me to be my wife." A strange tickling sensation washed through Darra's stomach, and her heart gave a faint flutter. Adurin, too, seemed to be affected by his words, for her blushed yet again, glancing away nervously. "Or you could be my new business partner, if you like."
"What is it that you do exactly?" Darra asked curiously.
"I'm a freighter pilot," Adurin replied. "I own my own small company, but we work with the local corporation. They contract out business to us. I make deliveries and shipments all over the Lahara Sector."
"I am afraid my flying skills are less than impressive," Darra said ruefully. "My Master never put much importance on such things. I would make a terrible partner for your business."
"I could always teach you," Adurin responded with a dismissive wave of his hand.
"I would like that," Darra said with a small smile. "But perhaps, for the sake of appearance, I should pose as your wife. That would certainly be less suspicious than you taking on a partner who can barely fly at all."
"I suppose so," Adurin agreed, and she detected a hitch to his breath, a quickening to his pulse, which made her own breathing come more quickly, despite her Jedi training.
Marriage is forbidden, a nagging voice in the back of her mind reminded her, but for once Dara ignored it. The Jedi Order was in ruins, the only thing that mattered now was survival.
And it certainly wouldn't be so bad to be joined with this young man, she found that the idea was more and more appealing with each passing minute.
"Are you certain that you want to do this?" she asked seriously. "It is no little sacrifice, binding yourself to someone you just met."
Adurin's brows furrowed, but he nodded. "I know," he replied. "But for some reason I... I think it's the right thing to do. Maybe it's fate or something."
Pressing her lips together lightly, Darra gave him a faint brush with the Force, and wasn't surprised to see him shake his head as if to rid it of some fog. Force-sensitive, she marvelled. I wonder how the Order ever missed him.
Under different circumstances, he would never have even been told of his gift, but with the Order dying out, she wondered if it would be so wrong to teach him a little, just enough so that when the Empire found them, he could defend himself.
"I'll need to take your name, then," Darra told him at last, deciding that talk of the Force was best left for another time. "Mine will cause no end of suffering."
"Right," Adurin nodded. "We'll see about getting you some papers drawn up tomorrow, saying that you're a citizen of Agamar. Just in case anything comes up."
Well, well, the man was not only kind and handsome, but quite intelligent, as well. Darra hadn't even considered identification papers until he'd mentioned it.
"Will there be any trouble getting those?" she inquired.
Adurin hesitated, then grinned, shaking his head. "No, not really. I know someone on Kessel who can forge some for you. I deliver some of his spice shipments, so I'm sure he'd be more than happy to do it, no questions asked."
Biting her lip, Darra reached out to brush his mind again, this time more discreetly, seeking some sort of guidance from the Force. What she got was a sense of warmth and safety, of companionship and company. She could be happy here, living out what remained of her life with this man, helping him with his business. She might even love him one day, she realized with a smile. Love was something she knew nothing about, having been raised in the ways of the Jedi, but it was something that she was curious to explore.
"I think that I will like it here, Adurin," she admitted softly.
"I'm glad," he replied, and she sensed that he really was. "I'll find you some blankets, so you can get some sleep. You look like you could use it."
"Thank you," Darra said with a yawn.
He returned a few minutes later, and draped a warm cloth over her, then headed for the kitchen again.
"Adurin?" Darra asked, and he paused in the doorway. "I forgot to ask, what is your family name?"
"It's Jade," Adurin replied.
"Jade," Darra echoed, a small smile tugging at her mouth. "It suits you."
"Thank you," Adurin chuckled. "Let's hope it suits you, too, if you're going to take it as your own."
"Darra Jade," she murmured with a nod. "I like the sound of that."
The smile that crossed Adurin's face filled her with a strange kind of warmth that she couldn't explain, but it made her smile in return. "So do I," he told her. "Get some rest, I'll be in the other room."
Closing her eyes, Darra drew the Force close around her, sinking into a healing trance. As she slid deeper into its grasp, the Force seemed to brighten behind her eyes, and for a fleeting moment she saw a child's face, with piercing green eyes and a tossle of flaming hair, looking back at her
The image faded as sleep overtook her, but those green eyes, so like her own, stayed with her long after that.
OMG, OMG! Mara's parents!!!! *shrieks of delight* That was just awesome! I loved seeing Dara again, since we lost track of her after the battle where Ani killed a Jedi who Palpy had possessed to protect Padme. I especially love the glimmer of good left in Vader early on. He he, he is responsible for Mara being born then grin
Don't ask me why, but this part just tugged at the heartstrings for me happy
How prophetic are these words of Dara: There was still a flicker of the boy she once knew inside of the Dark One, and someday that was going to be the Empire's undoing.
Everybody has already mentioned what I wanted to say. Another well-written post, a welcome respite to all the previously angsty/melancholic ones.
