Ok, I know this is bad of me, but I couldn't resist.
No sending me email bombs, alright? I know this is sad, but I warned you!
Here it is. I hope you like it!
Title: Sacrafices
Author: Jacinta Kenobi
Spoilers: None
Rating: PG
Time Period: JA, bi is almost 21
*****
It was supposed to be simple.
The mission would only take two or three days. Nothing drastic. They would be back before Obi-Wan’s birthday.
So why had things turned out so badly?
Qui-Gon Jinn felt hot tears running down his cheeks. Things were not supposed to happen this way.
Qui-Gon tried desperately to remember how he had gotten where he currently sat in the dusty street, hair askew, legs curled beneath him.
*****
Obi-Wan’s ginger braid flew, the silver strands of fabric glistening in the dim light as he turned his head quickly. “Master!!” He cried, a bit of fear slipping past his usually excellent control as he tried to get Qui-Gon’s attention.
Qui-Gon looked toward his padawan. “What is the matter, padawan?” He asked quickly of the young man.
Obi-Wan didn’t waste time explaining. He merely pointed, and Qui-Gon moved to the open doorway where Obi-Wan was standing. He looked out the door, and his expression became grim.
Hundreds of burly purple-blue aliens were stalking towards them, weapons held in their hands, and hateful expressions covering their features. The aliens of Creeja were at least two feet taller than himself, and had caused his apprentice to understandably feel dwarfed, but the 20-year-old Jedi had hid it well. Obi-Wan never ceased to amaze Qui-Gon with his abilities.
Qui-Gon turned to his padawan. “Obi-Wan, get behind me.” He told him quickly, and Obi-Wan, knowing that the doorway would not fit both of them and that it would be better not to venture out until they knew what was going on, obeyed without question.
Qui-Gon stood as tall as he could, making sure the aliens knew that he was not intimidated. When the aliens finally got close, one of them stepped forward. Qui-Gon recognized the being immediately. While the aliens were so alike that it was impossible to tell them apart by physical attributes, this particular Creejan wore flowing silver robes and several earrings on each ear.
Lasun Eriyota. The leader of the Northern tribe of Creejans.
“Qui-Gon Jinn.” Lasun’s booming voice rang out.
“Leader Eriyota.” Qui-Gon returned, bowing formally at the waist.
“Save your bowing for someone who wants it!!!” Lasun demanded. “Step outside, Qui-Gon Jinn. I have something to show you.”
Qui-Gon gave the alien a wary look, but stepped out, barely noticing that Obi-Wan followed only a few steps behind him. He glanced in the indicated direction obediently, and saw heavy smoke rising into the air, curling with a mind of it’s own as it reached for the stars.
His heart clenched. The only substantial thing in that direction that could be burned, since there were no forests on Creeja, was the Northern tribe’s encampment.
Qui-Gon turned his gaze back to Lasun, keeping his face carefully blank. Tears glistened in the big aliens eyes.
“You said that they would not attack. You said that they were too far away to reach us tonight, and to give you one more day to get a hold of them and settle this.” Lusan said, his voice rough.
Qui-Gon winced. He HAD thought that the Southern tribe was more than a 30-hour track away! They must have split up, he realized. That must have been only part of the tribe. He bit his lip. If so, it was no wonder the Northern tribe was frightened! The Southern tribe must be…almost 5 times there size!
Lasun leaned forward, not bothering to conceal his emotion. “My wife and children were sleeping when they came, Jinn. My beautiful wife and two babies….gone. Murdered in their beds!” Lasun fairly screamed at him.
The leader of the Northern tribe stepped back almost sadly. “I thought we could trust you, but you are obviously partial to the Jera.” Jera was the Southern tribe’s title. “You must pay for your deceit.” Lasun said slowly, sadly.
He waved a hand to the dirtied warriors behind him, and hundreds of guns came up quickly, all aimed in the same direction. Qui-Gon looked around hastily, and saw how high the odds were stacked.
His hand automatically went to his belt, but remembered that he had been required to surrender all weapons at the beginning of negotiations. Everyone had. Qui-Gon smiled to himself at the irony. //Hypocrites. Doesn’t seem to me that they followed their own instructions very well.//
Qui-Gon steeled himself as he understood that there was no way out. Concentrating, he let the force flow, wanting his last moments to be peaceful, and waited.
But something he didn’t expect happened.
*****
Obi-Wan watched the conversation silently, wondering how his master was going to handle this situation. He felt bad for Lasun and the other Creejans from the Northern tribe. How horrible it must have been to lose all of your family!
But when the guns went up and he saw his master stiffen, time slowed. Obi-Wan could tell that his master was preparing himself for death, knowing that he could not escape.
And suddenly, he knew what he had to do.
“NO!!!!” Obi-Wan yelled in terror, and, having no weapon, used the only shield he had; himself.
Sprinting quickly with aid from the force, he threw himself in front of his master just in time to feel pain rip through his chest and stomach. He cringed, and dimly he could hear his master’s yell as he sank to the ground, but everything grew darker, and he let his eyes flutter shut.
*****
Qui-Gon watched in complete horror as he heard his apprentice’s scream, and saw the young, lithe body that belonged to Obi-Wan fly in front of him, protecting him. Blaster shots rang out from all corners, tearing the young man’s body horrifically, and he heard the moan that came from Obi-Wan as the young Jedi sank to the ground.
“OBI-WAN!!!” Qui-Gon heard himself cry, the call tearing itself from his throat before he could think about it. His limbs locked up for a moment as he stared at the body that lay a few feet away, where it had fallen.
Then, he was able to move, and he ran to his apprentice’s body, gently lifting Obi-Wan’s head and placing it in his lap, ignoring the small trickle of blood that was coming from the young man’s mouth. He looked his apprentice over.
The padawan’s chest and stomach were almost unrecognizable. The boy had been shot so many times, there would be no chance of stopping the bleeding and saving the young Jedi.
Qui-Gon pushed that away. This could NOT happen! He looked back into his apprentice’s face, tears sliding down his face. “Obi-Wan.” He whispered in heartbreak.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over him. “Perhaps this is the will of the gods.” Came Lasun’s voice. “It is more fitting that you lose him. It is more like what happened to us. An eye for an eye, Jinn.”
Anger surged up into Qui-Gon, and he struggled to calm himself as the aliens turned and left. Gently, he rocked Obi-Wan back and forth. “Padawan?” He whispered to Obi-Wan, begging for any sign that the boy was still alive.
Dazed blue-green eyes, dilated from pain, moved slightly back and forth for a moment before resting on his master’s face. A smile flittered across the otherwise pain-filled features. “Ma..Master?” He asked, struggling to talk.
“It’s me, Obi-Wan.” He said quietly, running his hand across his apprentice’s hair.
Obi-Wan looked worried for a moment. “Are you all right?” He asked his teacher.
Qui-Gon shook his head past the tears. Obi-Wan was worried about him? “I’m fine, Obi-Wan. They’ve left.” He told the young man in his arms.
Obi-Wan smiled again. “Good.” He whispered, his eyes starting to shut again.
Qui-Gon felt his heart clench. “No! Obi-Wan, don’t you do that! Don’t you die on me! You hold on, you hear me?! I didn’t give you permission to die!!!” Qui-Gon told his apprentice, all rationality disappearing in his fear for Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan struggled to focus on him, a familiar smirk coming. “I’m sorry…I think I have to disobey this time, Master…” He whispered.
Qui-Gon clutched his apprentice. “No! I won’t let you die for me! Not here, not now! You have more important things ahead of you! You’re going to be a Jedi, and you’re going to make me proud, you hear? You can’t die.” He told the young Jedi in his arms.
Obi-Wan gave a spasm of pain, coughing a few times. More blood came, and Qui-Gon clutched him tighter. Obi-Wan finally relaxed slightly, and let his head fall into the crook of his master’s arm. “You don’t understand…” Obi-Wan said, gasping slightly, but intent on saying what needed to be said. “Nothing could be more important to me than dieing for you, Master.” Obi-Wan whispered, bringing his hand up to clutch Qui-Gon’s own, which was resting on his face.
Qui-Gon sobbed quietly. “Obi-Wan, no!” He said. “You can’t do this to me…” The last part dissolved into a whisper.
Obi-Wan squeezed at his hand. “I did it for you, master. I love you.” Obi-Wan struggled with the last few words, and his hand clenched even tighter around Qui-Gon’s as he fought a moment with the pain, his eyes shut tightly.
Qui-Gon gently stroked his apprentice’s face with one finger of his other hand. “And I you, young one. I will see you soon.” He whispered, finally excepting what was happening.
Obi-Wan smiled up at him, and then shuddered once in pain, and went slack. Qui-Gon stared at the body in his arms that was now devoid of life, and gave into his grief.
*****
Qui-Gon looked down slowly, hoping that his memory was failing him; that he was in a bad dream. But no, the cold body lying in his arms truly belonged to his beloved apprentice.
Qui-Gon felt even more tears well up, impossible as it seemed, and Obi-Wan’s features swam. //Obi-Wan would have been 21 in five days…// He thought in sorrow. He lifted the body carefully and stood, walking slowly in the direction they had left their ship. The council would send someone else to rectify the situation, he was sure, but all he could think of at the moment was getting off this awful planet and back to Coruscant where his padawan could get a proper Jedi funeral.
Qui-Gon felt his throat close. A funeral. This all seemed so surreal. He looked at the body again, touched the face gently, making sure that this all was happening.
Yes, this was real, painful as it might be. The cleft chin, the short ginger hair. The face could never belong to anyone but Obi-Wan. The face was cold, and Qui-Gon swallowed heavily. He turned his head upwards to look at the sky slowly.
“Until we meet again, my padawan.” He whispered, and continued on wearily.
THE END
*****
I've been considering doing this for a long time, and I finally did it.
Replies, anyone?

I'm in denial, Jacinta . Otherwise, it was a great, emotionally-stirring piece, and very well written.

Wonderfully written, but so sad!! Poor Obi-Wan! Why does he have to be so brave and noble?
You know, this mention of Obi's age kinda shook me, I will be 21 in ten days, so it makes it all so much more realistic to me...
Excellent job!
