Prelude...

The Jedi Academy was reopened on Yavin Four in the year 39 A.B.Y., under the instruction of Master Kam Solusar, his wife, Tionne, and Jedi Masters Tahiri Veila and Raynar Thul. Protected by the Force, Yavin Four once again serves as the training center for young Jedi candidates.

The Jedi Council remains in Naboo's magnificent capitol, Theed, delegating the actions of the prosperous Order, under the authority of Luke Skywalker.

The Alliance, consisting of the New Republic, the Imperial Remnant and the Chiss Empire, has been experiencing an extended era of peace, something long desired after the long, hard years of war against the Yuuzhan Vong.

That peace is tentative, though, with sightings of Vong vessels drawing nearer to the edge of the galaxy, and rumors of rogue Vong castes sending scouts back into the galaxy they were unable to conquer.

Fearing a coup, Jaina Solo Fel has met with Overlord Harrar, trying to decide the best way to eliminate the rebellious castes before they regain control of the Yuuzhan Vong. It is unclear what their motives are, or what the future holds, but the Alliance and the Jedi aren't taking any chances. They know what the Yuuzhan Vong are capable of. Should Domain Lah gain control of the Vong Empire, they would lead their people in a brutal attack against the New Republic.

The peace that so many died for, that so much was risked for, now hangs precariously in the balance, and only the Force knows how it will end...

45 A.B.Y; Yavin Four

Kyp Durron watched the boy in front of him twirling his lightsaber with unnatural grace and ease, his eyes closed and his mind absorbed in the Force. His short, cropped, dark hair bristled in the slight wind, his dark robe swirling around him.

The Force was strong in this boy, very strong. But that wasn't surprising, given his bloodline.

The brilliant silver blade arched through the sky, curving downward in an elegant and controlled spiral. Kyp had to admit that his swordsmanship was flawless. His lightsaber moved in his hand as naturally as the Force flowed in him.

The boy was sixteen year old Anakin Fel, the oldest child of Kyp's partner and closest friend Jaina Solo Fel. He was also Kyp's apprentice.

Anakin had been named for Jaina's brother, who had fallen in battle against the Yuuzhan Vong over seventeen years ago. His death had catapulted her down a path of anger and vengeance, her own raw anguish leading her to fall prey to the dark side for a time. She had managed to find her way back to the light, with some help from Kyp and a lot of understanding and support from her family and friends, and Kyp believed that her experience had made her stronger. Anakin's death, though, had not. Sometimes Kyp would look at her and see that sad, far away look in her eyes, and he knew she was reliving his death at the hands of the Yuuzhan Vong.

Kyp didn't think she would ever be completely over the loss of her younger brother.

"Very good, Anakin," he called evenly.

Anakin extinguished his lightsaber and turned to face him, his pale green eyes bright. "Thank you, Master Durron," he said, bowing his head in acknowledgment. "I have been practicing."

So I've noticed, Kyp thought. Anakin's lightsaber skills had been improving more and more each day, and Kyp found that the boy seemed as focused on his lightsaber training as his namesake and uncle had been at his age.

"Where are the others?" Kyp asked.

"Aunt Tahiri is helping Padme with her levitation skills in the temple," Anakin replied. His eyes glittered proudly. "She has a real talent for TK, you know."

Kyp nodded. "I know. Where are your cousins?"

Anakin shrugged. "Ben is meditating, and I think that Owen is out exploring with is friends."

"And the twins?" Kyp asked, imagining the sort of trouble the two of them would probably get into today.
"I'm not entirely sure," Anakin replied hesitantly. "I think that Ryen said something about going down to the river with Hala, but I'm not sure. I haven't spent much time with them since the day we got here."

Kyp had noticed that. In fact, he had noticed that all Anakin had done in the past few days since they'd arrived on Yavin Four was train. Not that Kyp minded, his apprentice was a talented student and a quick learner, and it was always good to have as much practice as you could under your belt, just in case.

Kyp and Anakin had come to the jungle moon from Naboo, to shuttle Ganner Rhysode, Hajima, and Chane and Nianne Margrey to the Academy. The four were going to serve as replacement instructors while Tahiri, Zekk and Raynar were off on missions. Kyp and Anakin had been planning on leaving right after dropping them off, and visiting with Kam and Tionne and the others, of course, but Anakin's sister Padme had arrived shortly after, care of her uncle Jacen, to rejoin her Master, Tahiri Veila. Jacen had stayed only long enough for his apprentice Jysella Horn to see Kam and Tionne for a bit, then they had set off with Zekk and his apprentice Yane.

It had been Jacen's announcement that kept Kyp and Anakin here for another couple of days, thought. Jaina was coming. She and Jag had been off in the Unknown Regions for the past few months, working with the Chiss to solve some minor crisis involving rogue Vong skips being sighted near Nirauan. That problem taken care of, Jaina was now underway to Yavin Four to pick up her apprentice, eighteen year old Ben Skywalker.

Since he had not seen Jaina in nearly six months, and since Anakin had not either, Kyp had decided that they could spare a few more days waiting for her to arrive. Word had come in about an hour ago that the Sunfire was coming out of hyperspace.

"Do you want to go get cleaned up before your Mom and Dad arrive?" Kyp asked Anakin.

Anakin's face brightened at the mention of his mother. "Do you know when they'll be here?" he asked excitedly. "I want to show Mom how good I've gotten with my lightsaber."

So that's why he he's been practicing so hard, Kyp mused. "They should be here any minute. I-" His voice trailed off as a familiar tingle swept through him. He smiled and he looked up at the sky. "She's here."

Anakin darted off towards the hangar bay at full speed, his long, slender legs giving him an agile speed that Kyp remembered having at his age.

Kyp followed, at a pace more dignified and appropriate for a Jedi Master. He watched the sleek, deadly looking ship known as the Sunfire landed gracefully, no doubt Jaina's doing. Jag Fel may have been one of the best fighter pilots in the galaxy, but no one could fly a ship like Jaina Solo.

The landing ramp came out and a minute later a tall, wiry figure dressed in black came down the ramp. The man was in his mid-thirties, and extremely handsome, with dark hair and a single white lock over his right eye, covering a faint scar that gave him a dangerous air about him.

Although Kyp would never tell him that.

Jag Fel gave Kyp a wry smile as he walked over to them. He looked at his son appraisingly, pride in his eyes. "Anakin, I believe you've grown at least half a meter since we saw you last!" He eyed Kyp wryly. "What have you been feeding him, Kyp?"

Kyp laughed. "I don't know, but whatever it is, I wish we'd had some when I was a student here."

Jag clasped his son on the back. "Pretty soon you'll be taller than me," he told him, his eyes glittering with a light Kyp could only describe as fatherly pride.

Anakin grinned. "Thanks, Dad." Then he caught sight of something behind Jag, and his eyes lit up in the way that could only mean one thing. "Mom!" he cried, rushing into her arms before she even got off the ramp.

"He missed her," Kyp said unnecessarily.

Jag glanced at him. "You think?" he deadpanned.

Jaina and Anakin clung to one another fiercely for a long moment, then Jaina let go of her son and the two of them walked over to join Kyp and Jag. Kyp was pleased to see that Jaina looked as healthy as ever, and just as beautiful. Her long brown hair was tied back in a thick braid, and her black fighting pants and dark green top hugged her slim figure flatteringly.

Jaina smiled at him, her brown eyes sparkling. "Hello, Kyp," she said, hugging him tightly. Through their Force bond, he felt their presences blur together in a warm embrace.

"Jaina," Kyp grinned down at her, luxuriating in the warmth her presence brought him. "It's good to see you. How did things go at Nirauan?"

Jaina sighed. "I had to speak with Harrar."

Kyp couldn't help but shudder knowing she had been in contact with the Yuuzhan Vong, even if it was only the priest of Yun-Harla. Harrar was no threat to Jaina, Kyp knew that. He truly believed Jaina to be the incarnate of their Trickster goddess, and he was the Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong now. Still, Kyp would never completely feel at ease with the Vong still being out there. Not after all they had done.

"And?" Kyp asked. "What did he have to say?"

"It's Domain Lah," Jaina answered grimly. "They've been causing trouble, stirring up rumors that Harrar is unfit to lead, that I used my sorcery to brainwash him."

"That caste has always been trouble, hasn't it?" Kyp muttered.

"Because they resent you for beating their leader, Mom," Anakin grinned proudly.

He's right, Kyp said through the Force. And their actions could be a problem.

I know, Jaina replied. We need to talk later about that. Privately.

Away from Jag and the kids?

Away from everyone,
Jaina corrected, and Kyp didn't miss the dark edge to her tone.

Something big was happening. Something big and something very, very bad.

"Your mother took out their Overlord, too," Jag said with a smirk. "I don't imagine too many of Shimmra's caste are fond of her, either."

"I agree," a new voice said.

They looked up to see Tahiri Veila standing in the doorway, wearing deep green Jedi robes, her long, curly blond hair cascading down her back. Her green eyes were bright and warm, her smile broad and, yet tinged with a hint of sadness, as it always was.

"Tahiri!" Jaina cried, rushing to her friend and embracing her. "How have you been?" she asked. "How is everyone at the Academy? How was Padme been doing? Is she here right now?"

Tahiri laughed. "And I thought I talked a lot." She grinned at Jaina. "I'm fine, the Academy is fine, Padme is fine, and yes, she's here. I just sent her to get Ben and the others."

"That's wonderful," Jaina said, her dark eyes bright with eagerness.

"Hello, Jag," Tahiri said with a smile. She glanced from father to son. "You better enjoy it while you can, Fel. The kid's going to outgrow you very soon."

Jag laughed. "I know. Luckily, though, I can still feel tall around Jaina."

"Hey," Jaina thumped him in the chest playfully.

Kyp rolled his eyes, but Tahiri grinned and took Jaina by the arm. "Ben's been meditating all day. He's really eager to get back out as your apprentice again."

Jaina smiled. "I'm eager to have him. I bet he's been bored here these past few months while I was in the Unknown Regions."

"A little," Tahiri confessed. "I think he feels he's too old to be here, since he graduated a few years ago."

"This one tried to use that logic on me once, too," Kyp said, jerking an elbow at Anakin. He shot Jaina a wry grin. "Then I just told him stories about all the trouble you and your brother used to get in when you were students here."

Anakin grinned. "Did you really install a hyperdrive unit into a crashed TIE fighter, Mom? And then get yourself captured by the pilot?"

Jag made an amused sound in his throat. "I haven't heard this one yet." He raised an eyebrow at his son. "Have you heard about the time they got chased by Boba Fett?"

Jaina scowled. "Kyp Durron, I'm going to kill you."

Just then a familiar voice cried out, "Jaina!" and eighteen year old Ben Skywalker raced to embrace his cousin, a blur of red-gold hair and gray robes flinging itself at her.

"Mom!" Padme yelled, running down the hill, her own blue robes and her long braid flying out behind her. "Dad!"

Jag broke into a jog and caught her in his arms as she reached the bottom of the hill, spinning her in a circle. "Padme, you've grown even more beautiful than your mother!" he cried, gazing at her with soft eyes.

Padme blushed, her green eyes bright. "I doubt that, Dad, but thank you."

"Padme," Jaina cried, letting go of Ben and hurrying over to embrace her daughter tightly. "Oh, honey, I've missed you!"

"I've missed you, too, Mom," Padme grinned.

Kyp took a moment to study the two of them together. Padme Fel was truly beautiful, just like her mother. She had inherited Jaina's soft features, her beautiful dark hair, her dazzling smile, but her pale green eyes were entirely Jag's. Standing beside one another, mother and daughter could have passed for sisters.

Kyp glanced at Jag and Anakin, who were both smiling broadly at the scene in front of them, and he decided that Anakin looked as much like Jag as he did Jaina. But he had some of Anakin Solo in his face, too, and Kyp wondered if he had looked that much like Jaina's brother when he had been born.

"Uncle Jacen just left a few days ago," Padme said. "He said to give you his love, though."

Jaina nodded, smiling. "He has an easy mission. All he and Zekk are doing is going out to Corellia to look around and speak with the CorSec people who reported seeing what looked like a Vong skip out along the Corellian Run."

"And what are we doing?" Ben asked eagerly, his gray eyes filled with excitement. "Where is Dad sending us?"

Jaina smiled. "He wanted to send us somewhere nice and safe, like Kuat, but your Mom convinced him that we would be so bored there we'd end up searching out the lowliest scum on planet and busting up a crime syndication."

"That sounds like something you two would do," Kyp drawled.

"That's my wife," Jag said wryly. "When trouble's to be found, you can be sure Jaina is, too."

Jaina rolled her eyes, ignoring them both. She shot Ben a conspiring look. "We are going to Tatooine."

Kyp didn't miss the way Ben's eyes lit up at the mention of his father's homeworld. Ben had always been fascinated by the sand planet, amazed that there really was no water on the planet. "Have there been sightings there?" he asked.

Jaina nodded. "A moisture farmer claims to have seen what he thinks was a Vong spy bug. Your Dad wants us to check it out."

Anakin frowned. "I thought spy bugs couldn't travel through space."

Jaina gave her son a significant look. "They can't."

Tense silence filled the landing field for a long moment. This may be more serious than I thought, Kyp mused grimly.

Sensing everyone's discomfort, Anakin did what he always seemed to be able to do, and diverted their attention elsewhere. "Hey, Mom, I wanted to show how good I've gotten with my lightsaber! Kyp says my skills are getting better every day!"

Jaina beamed at her oldest child. "I can imagine they are," she replied. She brought a hand to her own lightsaber, clipped onto her belt, and her dark eyes were filled with wicked mischief. "Why don't you and I spar?"

Kyp had to struggle not to laugh at the suddenly pale look on Anakin's face. It was true, Jaina was an expert swordsman, but the idea of dueling with his own mother seemed more unnerving than anything Anakin had imagined.

Then again, Kyp thought wryly. Everything Jaina does is unnerving.
