Here you go Hann, JFH wink
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Force was not an instrument of justice.
How many times had Jacen Solo told that to his younger brother? How many times had he fought with him, both verbally and with lightsabers, over the true meaning of the Force?
Too many times to keep track of.
Jacen still found it ironic that neither he nor Anakin had been right, and yet both had been determined that they were. While Jacen's view had always been a more philosophical one, Anakin had focused more on the physical aspects of the Force.
And Jaina found her balance somewhere in between, Jacen mused ruefully. Sometimes he regretted the rift that had grown between him and his brother during their teenage years. He knew that he had missed out on so many parts of Anakin's life because of it, parts that Anakin might have shared with him had they been on better terms, parts that he had openly shared with Jaina.
It seemed odd, even to Jacen, but he had envied Anakin in some aspects when it came to their sister. Even though Jacen and Jaina were twins, closer than any two people could possibly be, Jaina and Anakin had always had a special bond. They both loved machines, they were both incredible pilots, they both believed in doing before thinking, while Jacen was always the complete opposite. As children, Anakin and Jaina had always gotten into trouble taking apart their droids and trying to make them "better". In other words, more likely to do their homework for them and feed them sweets for dinner. Their schemes had always paid off for Jacen, as well, but he had never been interested in how they did what they did. He had been content to daydream and play with whatever little animals he could catch.
Jacen wished he had spent more time doing things with Anakin.
He wished he had spent more time with him period.
Sighing, Jacen shut down his green lightsaber and deactivated the remote hovering before him with the Force. He opened his eyes, clipping his lightsaber back on his belt.
"Thinking about Anakin again?"
Jacen didn't turn. "Yes," he replied evenly, toweling off his sweat. "I find that I do that quite a bit."
Zekk was silent, but Jacen could feel a distant sadness from the man. Zekk was one of his oldest friends, and therefore had known Anakin since he was small. It made Jacen feel pleased to see that so many people still missed his brother.
Jacen took a moment to let the sadness inside of him fade away, then turned and favored his friend with a lopsided smile. "You letting Yane fly?" he asked wryly.
Zekk snorted. "Right. If there's one thing that kid has against him, it's that he'd make a horrible pilot. Couldn't fly his way out of a hangar."
"You and Jaina used to say the same about me," Jacen reminded him with a grin. "And look at me now."
Zekk eyed him appraisingly. "A Jedi Master, husband to the former Queen Mother of Hapes, a father to a fourteen year old boy and a pair of eleven year old twins, with a very wise and adoring apprentice?"
Jacen nodded. "That's me."
A wry look of thoughtfulness crossed Zekk's face. "And yet you're still a terrible pilot."
Jacen tossed his towel at him playfully. "Thanks for the confidence."
"I have every confidence in you," Zekk retorted with a grin. "Just not in your piloting skills."
"I can't say that I blame you," Jysella Horn said, stepping into the hold. She flashed Jacen a slight smirk. "I'm holding on for dear life to the 'Oh Stang' handle whenever he's flying the Solo Flame."
"Hey!" Jacen cried indignantly. "Me, Jedi Master, you, apprentice. See something wrong with this picture?"
"Only that you're actually a Master," Zekk snickered.
"Hey, you thought Jaina deserved it," Jacen protested.
"I also thought she was much more attractive to look at than you," Zekk replied dryly.
"Careful, Master Zekk," Yane said, stepping up behind Jysella. "You wouldn't want Anja to hear you say that."
Zekk grinned. "She'd agree with me."
"Ha ha ha," Jacen said. "You're so funny, Zekk. You sure you didn't pick up my habit of telling bad jokes?"
"At least I know when they're bad," Zekk shot back with a smile.
Any remark Jacen might have been about to make was silence when Jysella rolled her eyes and muttered, "Men!"
"Hey!" all three male Jedi objected.
Jysella batted her long, dark eyelashes. "Was it something I said?"
Jacen groaned. At twenty, Jysella Horn was a very attractive young woman, with her long black hair rolled up at the nape of her neck, and her black eyes deep and mysterious. She was slender, and her tan Jedi robes made her skin look pale and creamy. Everywhere they went, Jacen was aware of young men watching her, and she seemed all to at ease with batting her eyes to get herself out of trouble.
And into it, as well, he added silently.
"Something wrong with your mouth, Yane?" Zekk asked dryly.
Jacen smirked as he took in the young man's dazed expression. Jysella tended to have that affect on people sometimes.
I think he likes you, Jacen told her wryly.
He felt more than saw her blush. Don't be ridiculous, she replied.
Jacen chuckled to himself, giving Zekk a knowing glance, then changing the subject. "Did you send a message to your brother like I told you to, Jys?"
Jysella nodded. "He was in a meeting with the Council, but I left one with Syal. I told her that we gave Hala the hololetter they sent, and she said that she would pass along the information to Valin as soon as he got in."
Jacen nodded. He wanted some of the Jedi to be extra watchful of the Academy with Yuuzhan Vong sightings occurring. His children were on the jungle moon, most likely playing with Valin's daughter Hala. Jacen didn't want to take the chance that the Vong got anywhere near Yavin Four.
That was why Tenel Ka was going to travel back to the Academy after she finished visiting her father and stepmother on Hapes. Jacen knew his wife wouldn't let anyone within striking distance of any of their kids unless they killed her first.
And even then he imagined she would find a way to stop them.
"I'm just glad I don't have any kids," Zekk commented, shaking his head. "Yours get into enough trouble for me."
"You'd actually have to marry Anja to have kids," Jysella replied.
All three men looked at her for a long moment in silence. Jacen mentally counted down the seconds it took her to figure out that wasn't entirely true.
Realization crept onto her face, and she blushed. "Oh. Right."
Zekk looked amused, but he didn't reply. Instead, he turned back to Jacen and smiled. "Besides, I've seen how much Padme puts Jag through. I don't think I could handle it if I had a daughter. Especially not once she hit her teenage years."
"Especially not one so attractive to all the male students," Jacen agreed.
Zekk shrugged. "She takes after her mother."
Jacen smiled. "Yes, she does, doesn't she?" he asked, a fondness creeping into his voice, as it often did when he spoke of his sister. He knew that his opinion of her beauty wasn't biased, despite being her twin brother, but merely an obvious observation. His mother was beautiful, so of course his sister was, and she had passed that beauty on to her own daughter.
"I'm just glad Valin got over that huge crush he had on her," Jysella said with a grin. "It wouldn't have been good for him to be drooling over his wife's cousin's wife."
"We could make a holodrama about that," Yane said.
Jacen tuned the two apprentices out as they jokingly discussed what holostars they should have play Jaina and Valin, and motioned for Zekk to follow him into the cockpit of the Lightning Bolt. The sleek Nubian cruiser had been named for the ship Zekk's foster father Peckhum had given him when they were students at the Academy years ago. Peckhum lived with Anja on Bespin, where she was once again working with Lando Calrissian. Zekk made it a point to visit her there at least once every other month, and Jacen knew she dropped by the Academy often.
I don't think I could stand being apart from Tenel Ka for so long, he thought with a wistful smile. It had only been a week since his wife left for Hapes, and already he missed her terribly.
"It's not that bad," Zekk said, picking up on his thoughts. "Anja and I are both bad at commitment. And with me being an instructor at the Academy most of the time and her needing to be located on Bespin to help Lando and Tendra with their business, there's not really much alternative."
"I guess not," Jacen replied. Sensing that Zekk was a little saddened by this subject, he quickly diverted their attention to more serious matters. "Do you think that these two CorSec officers really saw a Vong skip?"
Zekk's mood sombered immediately. "Who knows?" he asked, shrugging. "If they did, then Jaina is right and Domain Lah is preparing a strike."
"Yes," Jacen agree grimly. "But against Harrar, or us?"
"I wish they'd attack Harrar," Zekk muttered. "Let them kill themselves."
"Don't let Jaina hear you say that," Jacen advised. "She'll give you a lecture about how Harrar is keeping the Vong from trying to conquer the galaxy again."
Zekk raised an eyebrow. "I take it you made the mistake of voicing that opinion to her?"
Jacen nodded. "She has a sharp tongue when she wants to."
Zekk winced. "That I completely agree with." He studied Jacen curiously for a moment. "Doesn't it bother you to see that she trusts Harrar?"
"He's a priest," Jacen argued. "Not a warrior."
"He's a Yuuzhan Vong," Zekk insisted. "A Yuuzhan Vong who once worked very hard to try and capture you and Jaina for sacrifice."
"At Tsavong Lah's decree," Jacen pointed out. "Once he believed Jaina to be Yun-Harla, he backed off."
"But Jaina isn't Yun-Harla," Zekk reminded him. "And that fact is like a thermal detonator waiting to explode. If Domain Lah can prove she's not their Trickster Goddess, Harrar will turn on us, or the Yuuzhan Vong will turn on him, and then attack us anyway."
"They aren't going to find out," Jacen assured him. "The Alliance has taken a lot of precautions to be sure of that, and Uncle Luke has Jedi scanning the military for Yuuzhan Vong in ooglith masquers. There's no way they'll find out that it really was all just a trick."
Zekk shrugged. "I hope not. For Jaina's sake, and for the sake of the Republic."
Jacen nodded. "Jaina knows what she's doing. I'm sure she's got everything under control."
"I hope so," Zekk said. "I don't want to see her get hurt."
"Neither do I," Jacen replied. "But we just have to believe that she's making the right decision about Harrar. It's not like we get a say in it. She has the support of the Alliance and the Council." He grinned wickedly. "Besides, do you really want to tell her that you don't trust her judgment?
Zekk winced. "I think I'd rather be eaten by a wild rancor."
"It would definitely be less painful."
