(pants out of breath)

Made it! Great posts so far JPS and it looks like I'm just in time for a new one too! grin

I agree with lexu, it's only a matter of time before Jaina starts getting herself in trouble. Probably dragging Kyp off with her right after she tells him bad news.

Looking anxiously for next post,

"Tahiri?" Jaina asked quietly.

Tahiri looked up to see Jaina and Kyp standing in the doorway to the meditation room, grim looks on their faces. Instantly Tahiri knew something was wrong. "What is it?" she asked, standing and dusting off her Jedi robes. "What's wrong?"

Jaina smiled weakly. "It seems like there's always something wrong, doesn't there?"

"Jaina has something she needs to tell you," Kyp said, his voice tinged with a worried anxiety. He glanced past Tahiri, at where Tionne was in meditation. "Is there somewhere we can talk privately?"

Tahiri nodded. "The garden. It should be deserted right now. Everyone is either at evening meal or finishing up meditation."

"That works," Kyp said.

Tahiri led them out of the temple and out to the small garden she and Tionne had planted when they rebuilt the Academy. The starkiller roses were in bloom, their vines twisting and crawling around the small stone benches set up there for private meditation. Tionne had wanted it to look like the meditation gardens on Naboo, Tahiri had chosen the starkiller roses because Anakin had always thought they were pretty.

"Just like you", he'd said to her, just before their mission to Myrkyr. She had smacked him playfully and told him to stop sucking up, that she was not going to do his chores for him.

How much she would have given to hear him say those words one more time.

Gently, Tahiri folded away the memories and emotions that fit her like a second skin. She had never completely gotten over Anakin's death, she didn't think it was possible for her to do that, but she had finally gotten to the point where she could think about him and not feel like she was dying. She could remember him, and while it made her sad, she no longer found herself having panic attacks. She supposed she could have dated, maybe gotten married and started a family. Anakin would have wanted her to do that. But she never had.

Not because she thought it was any kind if betrayal to Anakin, it wasn't, she knew that. She would have wanted him to mov eon if she had been the one to die. Tahiri just found that she couldn't love anyone else. Anakin was still alive to her, in her heart. It wasn't possible for her to feel things for someone else when she still loved Anakin with every fiber of her being. And it wouldn't be fair to the man she chose to be with, or to herself, if she could never completely love him, because whatever she might have felt for him was totally eclipsed by what she still felt for Anakin.

Tahiri knew that her family, the Solos, the Skywalkers, Kam and Tionne, worried about her. She knew that they wanted her to find someone she could be happy with. But the funny thing was, Tahiri was happy. She was happy teaching at the Academy with Raynar and Zekk, both of whom had become dear friends. She was happy training Padme, helping to raise the girl into a beautiful young woman. She was happy being surrounded by family and friends, being part of the Jedi Order. She didn't need anything else to be happy.

She wanted Anakin, but she could finally be happy without him.

"What is it?" she asked again, looking to Jaina.

Anakin's sister looked tired suddenly, weary. As if she had been carrying some secret burden and could finally unload it. Tahiri had often noticed the resemblance the Solo siblings shared, but it was never more prominent that Jaina was Anakin's sister than it was right then. Her braid hung over one shoulder, her eyes heavy and exhausted, but there was that grim determination, that thin set of the mouth that had always been so characteristically Anakin. Now Tahiri wondered if maybe he hadn't gotten it from Jaina instead of the other way around.

"I spoke with Harrar a few days ago," Jaina said.

"Through villip?" Tahiri asked. She knew that only four people had unconditional access to the Yuuzhan Vong communication devices. Master Skywalker, Chancellor Elyasian, General Antilles and Jaina. Tahiri had access to the one on Naboo and the one on Coruscant, if only for the reason that no one in the Republic could understand Vong culture the way she could.

The way the Vong had shaped her to.

Jaina shook her head. "Harrar came to Nirauan."

Tahiri couldn't help the expression of shock that washed over her face. The Yuuzhan Vong were not allowed to enter Republic space, Remnant space or Chiss space without being given explicate permission first, and Nirauan was definitely in Chiss space.

"He did?" Tahiri asked. "Who authorized that?"

Jaina gave her a meaningful look. "No one. Harrar risked being vaped to reach Nirauan in secret."

Tahiri took a moment to let that sink in, to let the implications of that sink in. "Secret from who?" she asked. "The Alliance? Or the Yuuzhan Vong?"

Jaina's lips pursed. "He said that if Domain Lah knew he had contacted me, they would have overthrown him."

"They might have staged a coup while he was gone," Tahiri pointed out.

Jaina nodded. "He had to take that risk. He thinks, and I agree with him, that that's inevitable now. Domain Lah is consolidating their power rapidly. They're going to strike, we just don't know when."

"Can't Harrar just get rid of them now?" Kyp asked. "Before they do anything?"

Tahiri shook her head. "Yuuzhan Vong mandate requires they commit treason before they can be reprimanded. Harrar is powerless to stop them until they move against him."

"Exactly," Jaina said. "And they know that, which is why they're moving very carefully. They're striking in the shadows, at targets that Harrar can't officially protect."

Tahiri frowned, narrowing her eyes. "You mean our galaxy?"

"Among other things," Jaina said softly. She met Tahiri's gaze evenly. "Domain Lah has issued a skarlad against me."

A cold fear settled in Tahiri's stomach. A skarlad was basically the Yuuzhan Vong equivalent of a death warrant. If a domain called for someone's head, no member of that domain could ever rest until the contract was fulfilled.

Tahiri understood why Harrar had wanted to warn Jaina, but what she didn't understand is how he had found out. Skarlads were sacred secrets kept within the domain. It was a sin worse than blasphemy to confess to one.

"Harrar's warriors uncovered an assassination attempt being plotted," Jaina explained, sensing Tahiri's confusion. "Domain Lah wanted to eliminate me. They had actually deployed an assassin. Harrar's warriors intercepted him before he broke the Galactic Divide. They killed him, and they found the scared tattoo of Domain Lah and the seal of the skarlad imprinted on his chest."

"They're trying to kill you," Tahiri said, disbelief thick in her voice. "This could mean the end of Domain Lah if they fail. as soon as Harrar is able to strike back, he can claim they blasphemy the gods by trying to destroy one."

"But it could also doom Harrar," Jaina rebutted grimly. "If Domain Lah gathers enough support in the Vong Empire, they can eliminate Harrar and put Krillit Lah on the Supreme Overlord's seat."

"And then there will be war," Kyp said, his tone expressing the cold reality of his words. "And more worlds will be destroyed, more people will die."

"We can't allow that to happen!" Tahiri cried.

Jaina shook her head. "No, we can't. And neither can Harrar. That's why he risked everything to reach me, to tell me of Domain Lah's treachery and to warn me that they will keep trying to destroy me until they succeed."

"They won't succeed," Kyp said sharply, his jaw clenched in anger.

Jaina gave him a gentle glance. "They almost did. On Nirauan." She looked back to Tahiri. "The assassin Harrar's men uncovered was piloting a frigate. One of the pods was missing. That is the other reason Harrar risked his life to reach me. He feared that the other assassin would get to me. When he reached Nirauan he was terrified it was going to be too late."

Tahiri was thoughtful for a moment. "Harrar seems to genuinely like you."

Jaina shrugged. "He's a priest. He thinks I'm his goddess. I think it's more a matter of religion and worship than any actual like or dislike for me."

"I take it since you're standing here that you disabled the would-be assassin?" Tahiri asked, a slight smile tugging at her lips.

Jaina smiled. "Yes. I can sense individual Vong now, and I've seen Harrar so often that his imprint int he Force has become familiar. I knew it was him in the skip as soon as I felt the skip enter orbit. I had the Chiss let him land on the Baron's estate and he said he needed to speak with me privately, so I took him back to the suite Jag ad I have there."

"I don't like the idea of you being alone with him," Kyp commented. "It's just ... it's a little unnerving, Jaina."

Jaina shot him a sympathetic smile. "He would never try anything, Kyp, and you know that. And if he did, he wouldn't get very far. He's not a warrior, and I'm a Jedi Master. Jacen and I can sense the Vong better than anyone, except maybe Uncle Luke and Mom. I'd know if he was going to do something."

"What about the other assassin?" Tahiri asked.

"He found a way into our suite," Jaina answered, her eyes dark. "He was waiting for me when I stepped inside. I felt him just as he attacked. Harrar knocked me to the floor out of the way of the amphistaff whip. I rolled up and took care of the assassin without much of a problem."

Tahiri raised an eye skeptically.

"Okay, so I got a broken rib and he cut my arm," Jaina admitted. "But it wasn't anything serious."

"I'm sure Jag agrees with you," Tahiri said sarcastically. Jaina and Kyp exchanged weary glances and Tahiri felt the truth of the situation through the Force. She groaned, shaking her head. "Jag doesn't know?"

"No," Jaina answered. "He doesn't. I went into a healing trance before he got home from his meeting with his father. Harrar and I dumped the body into his skip. He took it back with him to give him a proper Yuuzhan Vong burial."

"I don't think I want to know what kind of burial that is," Kyp moaned, making a face.

Tahiri smirked. "No, you don't. Trust me on this one."

"I need you to keep what we've told you secret, Tahiri," Jaina said softly. "Even from Padme. I can't have her at risk right now."

Tahiri nodded. "I understand that, but Jaina, what if Domain Lah decides to go after your children as a way of getting to you?"

Jaina's jaw hardened. "Then they'll have to get through Kyp Durron and Tahiri Veila to do it. And we all know that's just not possible." Her eyes softened. "Besides, Anakin and Padme aren't children anymore. They're Jedi. They don't need me to protect them anymore, no matter how badly I may want to. They can protect themselves."

"You're handling this better than I would have expected," Tahiri observed.

Jaina smiled slightly. "I believe in my children. Not just because they're my kids, but because they're Jedi. I know that they're strong in the Force, and that the Force will guide them, just like it does the rest of us. Our fates aren't really ours to decide anyway, we have to trust them to the Force."

Tahiri had heard talk like that before, many years ago, from a boy who so firmly believed in the Jedi and their cause that he had thrown his fate to the Force and let it lead him to his destiny.

"You sound like Jacen," Kyp said, rolling his eyes.

"No," Tahiri said softly, smiling sadly. "You sound like Anakin."

Jaina's lips twitched ever so slightly, sadness flickering across her face, and then she smiled brightly. "I'll take that as compliment, then."

Tahiri grinned. "I would, too."

Jaina's face went blank suddenly, and her eyes glazed over for a minute. Then she shook it off, and sighed, shooting Tahiri a wry smile. "The children are looking for me."

"Jag, too," Kyp said.

"You'd better go before he starts to worry that you've been kidnapped by Dark Jedi," Tahiri said with a dry smile.

Jaina glared at her. "Hey, I seem to recall you and my brother getting yourselves into just as much trouble as Jacen and I did."

"But she doesn't have a husband to tell all of those stories to," Kyp snickered. "Now go before Jag finds us and I have to tell him about the time Streen and I dropped by the Academy for a visit and found you and Raynar stuck under the Rock Dragon because you forgot to-"

"I'm going," Jaina cut him off, glaring. "Durron, I swear, the next time I see your wife, I'm going to tell her every embarrassing story my father has ever told me about you."

"I think Han's already told her them all," Kyp retorted. "Octa likes to bring them up when I make her angry."

"Good for her," Jaina replied, smirking. "I've been saying all along all you needed was a woman to get you under control."

Before Kyp could reply, Jaina ducked out of the garden, hurrying off to find Jag and Anakin and Padme.

Tahiri glanced at Kyp, her eyes searching his. "Is this more serious than she tries to make it seem? I tried to read her through the Force, but her shields were too firm to get an accurate observation."

Kyp's expression was frail. "I can't pierce her shields, either," he admitted quietly. "She's blocking me, too."

Tahiri let out a sharp hiss of air. This was more serious than she thought.

"Jaina's up to something," she said softly.

"Isn't she always?" Kyp asked, but his tone was grim.
