Venus_Star2-com: I doubt Anakin will be happy, no matter how soon he finds out what's happened. That is the question... can Anakin figure out on his own? No problem for the PM. Thanks for reading!

---------------------------

Ari gazed numbly in front of him. The Chancellor was giving the banquet's closing address, but his mind was elsewhere. He sensed Obi-Wan shifting uncomfortably next to him, but did not glance at his master. Throughout the dinner, Ari had studied Senator Organa. His suspicions had grown more acute when the Alderaanian Senator had excused himself for a moment. When Senator Organa had returned, he had not integrate himself back into conversation. Instead, he had simply watched the animated discussion between Anakin and the Chancellor while occasionally glancing nervously at Obi-Wan.

Ari turned to watch the Chancellor conclude his speech. "I am honored by my reception here. I hope to do all in my power to ensure the safety of Alderaan and its people. Nothing is more important than protecting the people of the Republic in this hour of need. Thank you once again."

Polite applause filled the chamber as Palpatine finished. After a moment, the guests began to disperse. Without waiting for Obi-Wan, Ari scrambled out of his chair and headed to where Anakin, Palpatine and Senator Organa were standing. Obi-Wan hurried after him. "Ari…?"

The Padawan held up his hand. "I think something's gone wrong, Master."

"What?" The reply was quick and out of character.

Ari frowned. "Are you okay, Master?"

Obi-Wan gathered his wits. "I'm fine. You just surprised me."

Ari continued on his way to intercept the Alderaanian Senator. "Senator Organa left during the banquet and returned a few minutes later. He didn't say a word after he arrived
back."

"Good observations," the Jedi Master praised. They were fast approaching their destination. "Do you have a strategy in mind?"

Ari hesitated a moment, but his determined gait returned instantly. "I have a few ideas."

Obi-Wan glanced at his Padawan, a smile fleeting across his features. "I suppose I'll let you take the lead on this one."

This time Ari did stop. He turned hesitantly to his master. "You're not joking, are you?"

Obi-Wan shrugged. "I don't see why I would. Now move along. You seem to know what we're doing."

"Thank you," Ari spoke softly before turning to continue.

As they approached, Chancellor Palpatine abruptly stopped speaking. He glanced at Anakin before greeting the Jedi with a frown. "Master Kenobi. May I help you?"

Ari's eyes slid to his master and Obi-Wan gave a discrete nod. The boy stepped forward. "We're fine, Chancellor. Senator Organa, could we have a word with you?"

Palpatine's eyes widened as the Padawan took control. Bail gave Palpatine a reassuring look as he spoke to Ari. "I believe that would be fine, Padawan Kinor."

"Shall we go?" Ari motioned toward the banquet hall door.

Bail inclined his head. "I believe my office would be an appropriate place."

Master and apprentice followed the Senator from the hall in silence. Chancellor Palpatine kept his gaze on them until they passed beyond the door. Once the Jedi were out of sight, he turned to Anakin. "Do you have any idea what your friends are up to?"

Anakin shook his head. An aura of disquietude had surround Senator Organa during the later half of the banquet, but Anakin could sense nothing unusual coming from either Ari or his old master. "I don't understand any better than you, Chancellor."

"We shall keep an eye on them," Palpatine decided. "I fear they may not have the best intentions."

Anakin's head snapped up. "What do you mean?"

"Do not play the fool, Anakin." Palpatine smiled in manner that was supposed to be comforting, but chills ran up Anakin's spine. "I am well aware your friends do not trust me. Sometimes I wonder where your allegiances lie…"

"I have pledged my unwavering support to the Republic as a Jedi and as a citizen." Anakin stared down at Palpatine. "Do not think otherwise."

Palpatine paused a moment to study the empty banquet hall. "But which comes first, my young friend, the Jedi or the Republic?"

Anakin bit his lip in consideration. "I do not see how the two are separable."

"They are very different," countered the old man.

"In a physical sense, perhaps you are correct. But the Jedi serve the Republic. That is their purpose. Their goals are the same as the Republic's. The Jedi Order is inseparably bound to the nature and existence of the Republic. I'm sorry, Chancellor, but I can find no legitimate reason to divide the two." The Jedi did not meet Palpatine's heavy stare. Instead, he distractedly ran his fingers along the edge of his cloak, idle fiddling.

"The Jedi follow the whims of the Republic without question?" Palpatine's tone was incredulous.

"Certainly not without question," Anakin conceded. "Nevertheless, they do what they believe is best for the survival and prosperity of the Republic. You do not believe that the Jedi would work against the Republic, do you?"

Palpatine let out a slow sigh. "I do not know what I believe, Anakin. As of late I feel the Jedi Council is more hesitant to follow my lead in the Senate."

"With all due respect, Chancellor, your ideas do not make up the entire Republic. The Jedi have to take into account the opinions of the Senators and well as that of the Supreme Chancellor." Anakin risked at glance at Palpatine. The man had a contemplative expression on his face, but his eyes were steel as they gazed back. Anakin looked away. "I do not believe the Jedi are trying to work against the Republic."

"Perhaps not." The Chancellor laid a pasty hand on Anakin's arm. "But I am beginning to believe the Jedi may not understand the best path for the Republic. There have been many attacks, but the Jedi have done nothing until now to aid in the war against the Separatists. That course of action did not seem to fit the Republic's best interest."

Anakin's eyes grew cold, his voice was rough. "Chancellor, the Jedi did not believe a few seemingly random attacks throughout the galaxy warranted a full-scale war effort. The use of the diplomacy is the Jedi's first weapon in conflict and it was not even considered. The late Senator Amidala spent the last ten years making sure that this army was not put to use. I thank the stars she died before it came to this. My point is that the Jedi are not the only ones clinging to peace, Chancellor."

"I think they underestimate the power that builds."

Anakin shifted uncomfortably, stepping away from the Chancellor's grasp. "I hope they do not. Please, Chancellor, I do not like to argue with you. Can we speak of something else?"

"Of course." Palpatine smiled thinly. "But this is an important subject Anakin. Do not simply accept what you have been taught to believe. That will only lead to a very narrow consideration of the galaxy."

"I understand." Anakin yawned. "It's been a long day. I think I should rest."

Palpatine waved his hand dismissively. "Go, my friend, sleep."

"Good evening, Chancellor." The Jedi Knight bowed slightly and then strode quickly toward the exit.

"Anakin!" He paused in his retreat, facing the Chancellor once again. "Remember I am here if you ever want to talk."

Anakin swallowed convulsively and forced a nod. "I'll remember."

"Good night." The Chancellor's smile contained a hint of mockery as Anakin swiftly exited the hall.

The chance of anakin finding out that padmae has been kidnapped is slim...love the tension between paply and anakin--and its a good sign to see anakin is loyal to the jedi even when palpy was trying to sway him to the dark side

Jazz: Thank you! happy Anakin and Palpatine are always fun to write together. Especially at this point, when they're both trying to talk around the truth.

wkmaksar: Anakin's a little distracted, although we wish he was paying better attention. Palpatine's willing to do just about anything... it's the final step in his plan toward galactic domination. A plan that he, I think, holds rather dear. Thanks for reading! grin

Venus_Star2-com: At this point, Anakin is a the mercy of those that know the truth. I'm glad I was able to show that tension. Anakin truly does believe in the Jedi Order. He still trusts them. Thanks for reading! grin

The hiss of the cockpit door alerted Padmé to the return of Captain Lysacek. She gazed up at him, trying to mask her uncertainty. He had not contacted Palpatine, nor had he harmed her, but something about him still set her on edge. He was too comfortable with the situation, too sure of his control.

His eyes slid coldly over her before coming to rest on the navigation controls. "We've arrived at Mustafar."

Padmé glanced at the readout and nodded. "It appears so."

He ignored her comment. "You're going to be housed separately from the Chancellor's other guests. He does not think they would be pleased to know you are still alive. He is worried about your safety, Senator."

"Who are the guests?" Padmé fought the urge to question him about his allegiance. One second he was following the role of the Chancellor's guard to perfection and the next he was speaking cryptically about defying the man.

"Nute Gunray and his associates." A mocking smile settled on his lips. "You might have heard of him."

"Sithspawn," Padmé muttered. "Are they the Chancellor's prisoners as well?"

"What makes you think you're a prisoner? My orders are to protect you at nearly any cost." He pushed the hyperspace lever forward, and the star field in front of them was instantly replaced by a glowing ball of fire. At least, Mustafar appeared that way to Padmé.

"I'm not going to explain twice." She glanced nervously at the approaching planet. "What is that thing?"

"Mustafar. It's volcanic."

Padmé's eyes widened. "Volcanic? Lovely. What are Palpatine's other prisoners there for?"

"I told you, they're not prisoners." He gave an exaggerated sigh. "It just wouldn't do for the Separatist leadership to be running loose."

Padmé's head snapped up. She frowned as the new piece of information fell into place. "The Chancellor knows who the Separatist leadership."

"There is very little Chancellor Palpatine does not know." The guard was concentrating on bringing the shuttle down through the sulfurous clouds of Mustafar's atmosphere.

"So I gathered. What happens when we get there?"

"There is a room prepared for you. I believe it's quite pleasant. It has lovely views of various lava eruptions." He said the last words with an amused smirk.

"Lovely. I'll have to remember to keep my curtains closed." She hesitated a moment
before asking, "What about you?"

"I’m touched that you care. You will remain under my personal supervision. There are other members of the Chancellor's private guard that maintain the facility, but the Chancellor does not trust them with you."

Padmé could see the landing platform fast approaching. All around, jets of molten lava shot into the air. She shivered. The planet made her uneasy. Forcing her eyes from the view, she turned to him. "Why wouldn't he trust the other guards? I assume all of you maintain the same level of loyalty."

"Certainly." He began the final sequence of the landing cycle, fingers dancing over the controls. "My relationship with the Chancellor is slightly different. Therefore he trusts me more."

Padmé's features were distorted by confusion, but she did not pursue the subject. Something about the way Captain Lysacek was so willing to share information made her all the more on edge. Either the boy was defying Palpatine's wishes or the Chancellor had requested she be fed bits of information. Judging from their interactions on Alderaan, the young man seated beside her was capable and ruthless, but she was beginning to detect a softer edge to his demeanor. He spoke freely and his posture was now slumped, not rigid.

He glanced over at her as the ship came to rest softly on the landing platform. "You'll have to excuse me for using binders, but I still don't trust you. Although I suppose there's no where you could go on Mustafar."

She wordlessly stared at him as he picked up the red helmet and positioned it on his head. Once the object was in place, he moved to stand before her. He held one of her hands firmly, but not painfully, as he unlocked the manacle from the chair. Maintaining his grip, he slid the loop that had resided on the chair arm over her opposite wrist. He repeated the motion, leaving her with two sets of binders clinging to her wrists. She raised a brow. "This is just for appearance, right?"

"If you would like to think so, Senator." The voice from beneath the mask was once again filtered. His entire demeanor had shifted back to that of the calculating guard on Alderaan. He hauled Padmé to her feet. "Come with me."

She allowed him to drag her forcibly as they made their way down the shuttle's ramp. Although uncertainly raged through her, she schooled her features to show nothing but contempt as they made their way out into the steamy air. The mix of heavy air and foreign gases encapsulated her, forcing Padmé to draw ragged breaths. "This is safe?"

Her voice was raspy. Her gave her an overtly violent jerk as he muttered, "it's fine. Breathe normally."

They made their way quickly through the harsh atmosphere. Narrow bridges and open ledges were the only passages to the regulated interior of the Chancellor's facility. She tried not to stare down into the gaping pits of flowing lava. From orbit the planet had looked hellish enough.

After an eternity of treading carefully above the glowing rivers, they arrived at the entrance to the only habitable structure on the planet. Captain Lysacek held tightly to her forearm as he led the way. They passed a few other crimson guards, but the corridors were generally empty. Padmé glimpsed the entrance to the control center, but the guard yanked her past the door when he realized she was staring. At the center of the facility, they entered a turbo-lift that took them three levels down. The hallway was filled with doors on either side, leading Padmé to suspect they had entered the domain of the living quarters. They reached the end of the hall. The pale metal floor and walls glowed blood red as they reflected the lava jetting from the depths.

"Security code beta-one." Captain Lysacek's mechanical voice intoned.

The door beside them slid open and he pushed her into the room. The guard glanced down the corridor before stepping into the room and removing his helmet. "How do you like it?"

One side of the room was a giant window that looked out over a waterfall of lava. The furnishings were plain. Only a simple bed, chair and desk sat within the walls. Nevertheless, the lava glow added an ethereal element. She carefully approached the window. "It's beautiful in a lethal type of way."

He moved to stand behind her. "I suppose so. One of many natural wonders."

Padmé shifted. He stood so close that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "It's grotesque. The experience of this room, I mean."

She could nearly hear him frown. "What do you mean?"

"It's so unnatural. One shouldn't find beauty in this room, but I do. I think it's gorgeous." She shuddered. "You must think I'm crazy."

"Hardly." The young man let out a small sigh. "I find much of human nature to be strange. What we enjoy often seems twisted and perverse."

Padmé turned to face him. She was a silhouette against the fire. "What leads you to that conclusion?"

She was standing directly in front of him, her head tipped up to stare at his face. Navé's eyes snapped toward her, but instantly refocused on the scene outside. "Many prefer pleasure to come with pain. They enjoy suffering. Of course, there are also those that enjoy causing suffering…but they are already sick and twisted."

"Why do you serve him?" Her voice was soft, willing an answer to be given.

The guard stepped around her to stare directly into the flowing lava. "I have already made enough slips to alert you that something is not right."

Padmé let out an amused chuckle. "I would not call them slips. You made a conscious decision not to report me. Why?"

"I am loyal to Chancellor Palpatine." He held up a hand as she began to protest. "I would never allow anyone to harm him. Nevertheless, my mind does not belong to him. Only my services."

"Belong?"

"It's a terribly ridiculous story."

Padmé shrugged, retreating to the bed. "I have a very long time."

He wandered over to the chair. "I was in love with a girl. I think she loved me as well. It does not really matter now. Anyway, we were young and in love. Stupid, actually. Her father was strict and we knew he would never allow me to marry her, so we planned to elope…"

"Something went wrong."

"He caught us. The night we were leaving. Apparently he'd had few of his guards trail her and he knew exactly what we were trying to do. He wanted to kill me on the spot. I'm not exactly sure why. I was just a harmless boy." Navé paused. His eyes were rooted on the glowing lava.

"What happened?"

"She begged and pleaded and he agreed to spare me on the condition that I would join his guard and serve him until my death. We were not allowed to see each other again." She saw the lava reflected in his glassy eyes, but he did not shed a tear.

"So you work for him in mind and body, but not soul," she mused.

He rose and walked to the window. "You could say that."

"What happened to her?"

His shoulders stiffened and he did not turn to face her. "I heard a month or so ago that she had died in a speeder accident on Coruscant."

"How horrible," Padmé sympathized. She rose and walked hesitantly to where he stood. A tentative hand came to rest on his shoulder.

He turned his head to face her. His eyes were hard even though his face was twisted in pain. "I don't want your pity."

"I…"

"Excuse me," he interrupted forcefully. "I should be going now. I'll be back to check on you. Don't try to leave. There are plenty of people far less understanding than I patrolling these corridors."

Padmé opened her mouth to reply, but hesitated. He had already turned away from her, drawing his helmet into place. She watched in silence as he swept from the room, crimson robes billowing.

A pensive silence surrounded Ari and his companions as they made their way to the Senator’s office. There was an unspoken agreement to refrain from speaking until they made their way into the private office. The eyes and ears of the Chancellor were everywhere. Secrecy was impossible in the hallways of the palace. Senator Organa stopped in front of his door, entering the security code. The Jedi entered the room behind him. The Senator glanced briefly at them before turning toward his desk. A flashing green light indicated that he had missed an incoming message. He chose to ignore it for the time being.

Obi-Wan was the first to speak. “Ari sensed something was wrong.”

“I noticed you were nervous during the banquet,” the boy elaborated.

Bail nodded. "I haven't heard from Tristan. I don't know what to think."

For a moment Obi-Wan's eyes flickered in understanding, but he checked himself. "I'm sure they've made it. It's probably not safe to contact us yet."

"You really think so, Master?" Ari's tone was dubious. "I felt something was wrong. I don't think they got off well."

Senator Organa glanced carefully from one Jedi to the other. The boy had a determined gleam in his eyes while Master Kenobi had an eerie calm surrounding him. "I don't know what to believe. I suppose we should give them a bit more time for delays. I hope everything worked out."

Ari frowned at his master. Just moments ago Obi-Wan had been willing to follow his lead, but now he was openly refuting Ari's claims. "I know what I feel, Master Obi-Wan. Something is wrong."

Obi-Wan shifted. "I don't doubt that."

"But you don't believe it has to do with Padmé?" Ari queried.

"The Dark side clouds everything. I do not know what to believe." It was as truthful a statement as Obi-Wan could make without revealing too much. He did not relish lying to his Padawan, but now was not the time to alert him of recent developments. He turned to Senator Organa. "I will do everything in my power to help you discover the truth of all this."

Senator Organa moved across the room to his desk. "I have an urgent message rerouted through Coruscant."

Obi-Wan followed him, a brow rising in interest. "From Coruscant? What could have happened there?"

"I have no idea." Bail glanced at Obi-Wan and then his apprentice. "I would appreciate it if you stayed while I viewed it. It may concern you as well."

Ari was still shooting troubled looks at his master, but he moved to stand and the Jedi Master's side. Obi-Wan placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Of course, Senator."

The Senator keyed in his access code. After a moment, a blue hologram appeared floating before him. It spoke in a solemn tone. "Greetings Senator Organa, this message has been sent to you by the intelligence subcommittee of the Galactic Senate."

Bail met Obi-Wan's penetrating gaze. "I don't think this is good news. The subcommittee wasn't formed by Palpatine. It's around to be employed as an information source during crises. The last time the network was used was the death of Senator Amidala. All the absent senators received a message from the committee letting them know of the recent events."

The Jedi Master nodded. "I've heard of the committee before. Play the rest of the message."

Senator Organa tapped the controls and the man in the hologram continued speaking. "Another Senator has been murdered by unknown assailants. On a mission with the Republic Army, Senator Raja of Myrkr was found decapitated in a control center conference room. None of the army staff have any idea how the murder was planned or who is behind the attack. Many are pointing fingers at the Separatists, but no conclusions have been drawn. The investigation is ongoing. Senator Raja was one of the junior members of the Galactic Senate and an important player in the movement against the use of the Grand Army of the Republic. A state funeral will be held for the Senator next week."

The hologram winked out. Neither the Jedi nor the Senator dared to speak. Ari stared wide-eyed into the space where the hologram had been. He was blinking rapidly, as if trying to convince himself that what he was awake. Obi-Wan had taken the news better than his apprentice. His face was set in a grim expression, but he did not seem shocked. Senator Organa staggered back into a chair sitting beside his desk.

"I think it's time to alert the Jedi Council." The words were directed toward Ari.

Ari turned his blank stare on his master. "Alert them…of what?"

"Anakin's knowledge." Obi-Wan turned his attention to the Alderaanian Senator. "What do you plan to do?"

"I would like to attend the funeral, but I don't feel comfortable leaving Alderaan under the control of the Chancellor. Something about him doesn't feel right," Bail admitted.

"All in not right," Obi-Wan confirmed. "I have come to be convinced that Palpatine is interested in nothing less than galactic domination."

Ari was fighting his way out of the hazy shroud that had fallen over him. Pushing the shock aside, his eyes widened as he processed the conversation. "Master… are you saying we should tell the Council that Palpatine is a Sith Lord?"

Bail shot up from his chair. "What?"

Obi-Wan sent a stern look at his Padawan. "Do be mindful of what you say, Padawan. You're lucky this is a secure location. Senator Organa, what Ari has said is true. Anakin warned us against alerting the Council for fear of Palpatine discovering our knowledge and moving against the Jedi more swiftly than he had planned."

"It makes sense," the Senator began. "I mean this whole thing makes more sense once you know all the Chancellor wants is power. You do realize he has near absolute control of the Senate. I suppose it would even be reasonable to believe he is directly behind the attacks on Senator Amidala and now Senator Raja."

"Beyond reasonable," Ari interjected. "I'm sure of it."

Obi-Wan nodded. "I believe you're right, Padawan."

"What do we do now?" Bail wore a lost expression. The new knowledge had left him pale and uneasy.

"Nothing right now." The Jedi Master sighed. "We can't let Palpatine know how disturbed by this news we are. He'll expect us to be upset, but he won't expect more than sorrow due to the Senator's death. He cannot realize we're suspicious. I noticed him watching us during the banquet."

"Plus he already knows we were lying about Pamdé," Ari added.

Senator Organa frowned. "How on earth did he find out about that? I told her to stay away."

"Anakin was a little rash." Obi-Wan offered no more explanation.

Ari glanced sideways at his master. "So you're suggesting we just sit here and wait for something to happen? I don't like it. Something else feels wrong."

"There's probably more to the Chancellor's designs than we realize," conceded Obi-Wan. "Nevertheless, I think we should proceed with caution. We cannot afford to be rash now. Anakin already has the power to compromise all of this. We have to make sure the Chancellor's finds no reason to question him. I don't trust his ability to hide the truth from that man."

"He would never willingly betray us," Ari stated with vehemence.

"I'm not saying he would, but Palpatine knows his mind better than he does." Obi-Wan turned to Senator Organa. "We'll contact the Jedi Council and see what they have to say. Do not share with anyone what he have told you. The safety of the Republic depends on it."

"I understand." Bail extended his hand to the Jedi Master. "It's been a pleasure General Kenobi. I wish you the best of luck. May the Force be with you."

The two men stood with their hands clasped, a silent understanding passing between them. Releasing his grip, Obi-Wan turned to Ari. "Time to go, Padawan."

Ari bowed to Senator Organa. "Thank you for having us."

"It was my pleasure." Bail watched them sweep from the room with growing dread. Master Kenobi and his Padawan would surely be returning to Coruscant soon to deal with the situation there. He would be left alone within the clutches of the Chancellor. Only Skywalker would be there to help him and from the Jedi Master's words, Bail was not sure how much he could trust Anakin with. And then there was Padmé. He had not heard from Tristan and worry was seeping into him. The boy was good at these types of things. He would never neglect to contact Bail unless something prevented him.

Bail rubbed his temple. Master Kenobi had seemed sure than nothing was amiss, but his Padawan had exuded a different feeling. Bail was not interested in doubting Master Kenobi, but something was wrong. With a sigh, he took a seat at his desk. Now there was nothing to do but wait.

Flanked by scarlet guards, the Chancellor returned to his rooms. A satisfied smirk was plastered upon his lips. The discussion with Anakin had been enlightening, but not altogether worrisome. If the boy still held an allegiance to the Jedi Council, Palpatine was unconcerned. Events would soon change his point of view. The Jedi Council's reaction to Senator Raja's death was the next crucial step to undoing Skywalker. Palpatine was sure the Council would act against him soon. After all, they had been hiding the location of Senator Amidala from him. The suspected something. Come to think of it, so did Skywalker.

At this, a frown slid across his features. Anakin had been unusually at ease during the banquet, but his mind had firmly shut out the Chancellor. Palpatine had a feeling Anakin had been endeavoring to perfect his acting skills. The boy had interacted with him too easily. The change from the tear stained face in his quarters to the laughing boy at the gathering was nothing short of impossible. Anakin was generally ruled by his emotions and the sudden appearance of his wife had put him into a delicate state of mind. Palpatine was sure he was not capable of such a quick turn around. The presence of Obi-Wan Kenobi, a figure that the Chancellor had noted in the past to calm Anakin, might have been able to ease Anakin's distress, but not purge his emotions.

Palpatine's ruminations were interrupted by the flashing comm unit on his desk. He strode quickly across the room and sank into his spoon-like chair as he keyed the transmission open. As the blue glow began, he let his hood slide into place.

The flickering blue image of his apprentice hovered before him. "I have completed the task successfully, my master. Senator Raja is no longer a treat to galactic interests."

"Very good, Lord Tyranus," Palpatine hissed. "Ensure that the Republic base on Kamino is directly under our control. You have seen that senate has been alerted?"

"Yes, Lord Sidious. The senate has sent out an emergency message to all its members. The Coruscant news stations had already picked up the story." Tyranus' voice included a badly hidden note of self-satisfaction.

Palpatine nodded slowly. "This is all very good, but do not forget your place, Lord Tyranus. We have a new project. The Senator from Naboo is still alive."

Dooku's features clouded in confusion. "What? That's impossible. She was very plainly killed in the senate building."

"Someone was killed," corrected Palpatine. "They must have used a decoy for safety reasons. Whatever may have happened, I know for certain that Padmé Amidala lives."

"Where, my lord?"

"She was in the employ of Bail Organa. I do not know if the senator is aware of her true identity or not." Palpatine smiled coldly. "But we do not have to worry about her anymore. I have arranged for her to be transported to my personal facilities on Mustafar until the time to eliminate her becomes apparent."

"Very good, my master. Does Skywalker know?" the glowing blue figure inquired.

"He knows his wife is still alive. Aside from that I could not say." Palpatine waved a hand. "Leave Skywalker to me. Continue to consolidate our control of the war. I think it shall soon be time to find peace."

"As you wish, my master." Dooku's blue figure flickered out.

Sighing in content, the Chancellor dropped back into his chair while brushing his hood aside. Now it was time to wait and observe before playing his next piece. Checkmate was within sight. The entire galaxy, his own.

The door chime sounded. Straightening in his seat, Palpatine called, "Come in."

Two of his private guards came entered, dragging an unconscious boy between them. One of the guards released the captive and moved toward the Chancellor. "We were able to apprehend Senator Amidala. Captain Lysacek should have arrived on Mustafar with her by now. It appears she was trying to leave the planet before we found her. This boy was in charge of her guard."

Unruly blond hair fell across the boy's eyes, but the features of the head lolling across the second guard's arm were unmistakable. "Senator Organa's nephew."

The first guard's head swung back to the prisoner. "His nephew?"

Palpatine gave a curt nod. "Bind him and leave him with me."

"Yes, Sir." The second guard let Tristan's body slump to the ground as he placed manacles around the boy's wrists and ankles. Once finished with the task, he rose and faced the Chancellor. "We will await further orders."

The first guard gave a small bow before following his counterpart out of the room. Palpatine's gaze followed them until the door hissed shut. Once alone, he reached into one of the compartments of his desk, drawing out the antidote to the stunning dart. Injection in hand, he made his way to stand above the boy. Tristan was slumped face first against the ground. Using his boot, Palpatine kicked the boy onto his back. Tristan's arms twisted in an awkward position underneath him. Pain was certain once he regained consciousness. A smile ghosted across the Chancellor's face. "This is going to be fun, boy."

He roughly stabbed the boy, allowing the antidote to surge into his bloodstream. Tristan's body wracked with sobbing breaths as he coughed and sputtered to consciousness. The pale blue eyes slowly refocused. "Chancellor Palpatine?"

"My pleasure, believe me, Tristan Organa." The Chancellor moved slightly away from the boy. "How are you feeling?"

"I was attacked…" Tristan began, but stopped as he realized his current state of being. "What's happening? Why am I bound? Won't you help?"

Palpatine shook his head, chuckling. "I'm not particularly interested in answering any of your questions, but I'll tell you I'm not here to help. As a matter of fact, I need you to help me get a few things straight. Do you think you can do that?"

Tristan's hands began to shake beneath him, but he forced himself to take a deep breath. "I'll try, your Excellency."

"Just be a good boy and it will all be over sooner," Palpatine crooned. Tristan swallowed heavily, but did not break his glare.
