Doctor Chase answered, “The damage to his legs and spine is repairable. In essence, Colonel Fel will walk again, and will hopefully regain full use of his legs. I’m not sure about the extent of control he’ll have, but I do know that he will not be paralyzed from this accident.”

He paused and looked at the faces of the people in the room. Wedge’s face had a grin klicks wide, and he looked like someone had just told him that he was getting a nice surprise birthday party or something. Syal was grinning almost as broadly as Wedge, which brought him to the fourth person in the room. Jaina Solo, Jedi Knight, also known as the Goddess, looked like someone had just told her the best news possible. Her face had an expression of joy and happiness as she asked, “May I go see him? Does he know about this development?”

“Yes, you may go see him, but no, he has not been told. I thought that he would enjoy the news better if he heard it from one of you,” the doctor reported. “I’ll leave you three to yourselves. Good-day.”

As soon as he left the room, Jaina looked pleadingly at Wedge and Syal, “Can I please have a couple of minutes alone with him? Jag and I have some things that we need to talk about.”

Wedge looked from Syal to Jaina, then said, “It’s alright with me. Syal?”

Syal smiled gently, “I guess I can last without seeing my son for the next couple of minutes. Just try to make it quick, alright?”

Jaina grinned and gave the two quick hugs, saying, “Thanks!”

Her grin faded as she walked down the hall to Jag’s room. Last time he hadn’t allowed her to see him. Would she be able to get in this time? was the main thought going through her mind.

She quietly slipped into the room, and jumped as the door shut behind her. “Whoever it is, I’m not in the mood for visitors, so please leave?” the irate voice said from the bed, not moving his head at all.

“Not even from me?” Jaina asked, worriedly.

“Jaina?!” Jag gave a half-strangled cry. Pushing his upper body up, he sat startled in the bed, keeping the scarred part of his face away from her. “What are you doing here? Please leave.”

“Jag, why are you doing this?” Jaina asked quietly.

“Who could possibly love a monster such as me?” he asked bitterly.

Jaina came over to the foot of the bed, where she could see his whole face, marred and unmarred sides. “Jag, if someone loves you, it’s from the heart. It doesn’t change simply because they become paralyzed,” she told him moving over to the other side of the bed. Jag flinched away a bit, but there was a limit to how far away he could get from her.

Gently, minding his burns, Jaina placed her hands on his scarred cheek, gently stroking the burns. She moved closer towards him and softly pressed her lips against his burns. She kissed, first, the top of his burns working her way down to his lips. Making each press of her mouth softer than the last time. Even more gently, she placed her lips on his and kissed him. “I love you, Jagged Fel. Nothing can change that. Not paralysis. Not scars or burns. Not even death. I love you. You have my heart,” she told him quietly. She touched her hand to his heart, feeling the burns under his shirt with her fingertips.

Their eyes locked and with nimble hands she lightly pulled his shirt over his head, letting the shirt fall from her hand to the floor. Her eyes moved to look at his disfigured chest and torso. She ran her fingertips gently over his scars, sending a chill up his arms. Bringing her hand to stop back up to his heart. “You have my heart,” she whispered, her breathe mixing with his.

Jag stared at her for a moment, then pulled her head down for another kiss. When he released her lips, he said quietly, “I didn’t think that you could possibly love a paralyzed, scarred man, so I was hoping that you would forget about me and find someone else. I thought it was for the best.”

“Listen here, Jag Fel. Don’t you ever think you know what’s best for me, alright?” she asked, fiercely. “Second, of all, I already said this, nothing can change the fact that I love you.”

Jag grinned as he heard her words. Then, his grin faded and he asked, “Are you sure you can accept me, crippled and burned as I am?”

“Jag, part of the reason why I came to see you was to let you know that the doctors... well, they think that your paralysis is reversible. And if the scars really bother you, there is cosmetic surgery. Those scars can easily go away,” Jaina told him, grinning from ear to ear.

Jag stared at her, shocked, before asking carefully, “Are you sure about this? I mean, this is not some type of joke?”

“Jag! I do not play jokes like this on someone! Look, the doctor thinks that your spine can be fixed. He’s not sure about the amount of control that you’ll have over your legs, but he’s pretty sure that you’ll be able to walk,” Jaina answered, a little shocked at his question.

“Sorry, Jay,” Jag told her sheepishly, pulling her down for another kiss.

A knock on the door startled them out of their lip-locked position. “Sithspit!” Jaina muttered under her breath.

“What?” Jag asked, worried.

“Well, your mom and Wedge agreed to let me come in here first and have a couple minutes of privacy with you. I guess our time’s up,” Jaina told him as the door opened and Wedge and Syal came through.

They stopped short as they took in the scene in front of them. Jaina was sitting up from Jag’s bed, a deep blush staining her cheeks. Jag was missing his shirt and he was blushing too.

“Whoops, look like we came too early, or late, depending on how you look at it,” Wedge commented to his sister.

The two blushed even harder, if possible. “Not funny, Wedge,” Jaina told him.
~*~*~*~

The surgery took place two days later. Jaina held Jag’s hand the entire walk to the operating room. She would have gone into the room with him, but the nurses stopped her as they rolled his bed into the sterile room.

Waiting in the room for the results of the surgery, was like being digusted in the stomach of a rancor for decades over. During the first hour she sat in the chair in the corner, rapidly bouncing her foot in anxiety.

Wedge came into the room and waited with her for the next hour. He occupied the chair, while Jaina paced the length of the waiting room. “Jaina, you’re going to wear a path into that carpet if you don’t stop that pacing.” he said putting down the datapad that he had been reading.

She stopped her walk, dropping her hands to her side. She gave him a faint smile. “I know. It’s just that... well.”

He nodded his head. “I know. I’m worried too.”

Before Jaina could continue the door opened wide. Both pilots turned their heads expected to see the doctor standing in the doorway. Instead, Syal Fel and Kyp Durron walked into the room.

“Thought you might need some caf,” said Kyp giving each of them a cup of the steaming liquid. He offered Jaina a smile and squeezed her hand lightly as he passed her the cup. “He’ll be okay.” he said loud enough only for her ears to hear.

She nodded her head briskly, blinking her eyes to keep the tears that were on the verge of spilling out of her eyes back. “I know.” she said in the same level of voice back to him.

Syal came up to her and wrapped an arm around the girl’s shoulders. She gave her a smile. “Here eat this. You probably haven’t eaten in a couple of hours.” She offered her a pastery.

She was about to decline when her stomach gave a slight growl. “Okay thank you, Syal.” She bite into the pastery giving her stomach what it needed. She took a cip of the caf that Kyp had given her. She sat down on the couch that was up against the wall. Finishing the food she licked the sticky glaze off of her fingertips.

“Hungry?” asked Kyp.

She laughed slighty, “Yeah. I guess I was.” They all shared a laugh the tension that was hanging in the room lifting a bit. Jaina stopped her laugh abruptly, causing the others to look at her. “It doesn’t feel right to laugh. Not when he’s in there, having surgery.”

“Oh Jaina,” said Syal coming to seat next to the girl. “He’s going to be okay. The doctors have complete faith that everything will be okay. He’ll be able to use his legs again.”

She wiped the tears that were streaming down her cheeks away with the back of her hands. “That’s not what I mean. I know he’ll be okay. It’s just that I feel as if I should take away some of the pain he going through right now. Reconstructive surgery on one’s spine can be painful, I imagine. I just don’t want him to hurt any more.”

Syal stroked the girl’s hair. “Neither do I, dear. Neither do any of us. But through this surgery Jag’s going to have less pain than he had before.” She brushed aside her own tears that were sliding down her cheeks.

For the next hour, the four of them waited with nervous anticipation. Every once in a while they would switch positions. Each of them anxious for the news from the doctors about the surgery that was taking place just a few rooms away.

Finally after waiting for two extra hours, Doctor Chase walked into the room, peeling off the surgical gloves that were on his hands. Jaina’s eyes widened at the sight of Jag’s blood on the gloves. The doctor threw them away in the hazardous waste bin that was positioned by the door. “Are all of you here to hear about Colonel Fel?”

“Yes!” they all said in unison standing from their seats.

The doctor laughed slightly. He placed his hands on his hips. “Well, the surgery was a success. Colonel Fel should regain full usage of his lower appendages within a month. Within the week he should be healed enough to got into cosmetic surgery for his superfacial scars caused by his burns.”

“Can we see him?” asked Jaina.

“Not yet,” said Doctor Chase. “He needs a few hours to himself in isolation.”

A look of solace came over Jaina’s face. “Okay. I can wait a few hours.”
~*~*~*~*~
Two hours later Jaina brushed back some stray strands of her hair from her face. She curled closer to Jag as he lay in his hospital bed. She rested her hand on his chest and he wrapped his arm around her body, placing his hand on her waist.

He placed a tender kiss on her temple. “I love you.” he said a little groggily, the medicines barely flowing through his bloodstream still.

She smiled. “I love you too.”

“How soon can I walk?” he asked her.

She pressed closer to him, softly as not to hurt his injuries from the surgery. “The doctor says within a month maybe longer.”

“That’s not good enough.” he said as his eyes began to get heavy again.

Her laughter filled his ears. “We’ll take each day as it comes, Jag. Each day as it comes,” she said stifling a yawn. Soon both were fast asleep in each other’s arms.
~*~*~*~*~*
Syal peered through the window that covered the wall that looked into Jag’s recovery room. A smile spread over her face as she watched the young couple fall asleep in the small bed that her son occupied.

“They make a great couple, don’t they?” said her younger brother, coming up beside her.

She nodded. “Yes, yes they do.”

“Syal, I’m glad you came. I’ve missed you.” he said, his voice cracking a bit.

She turned to look at the man who at one time at been the little boy that she had grown up with. She saw in his eyes tears that were teasing to come out. “Me too, Wedgey boy. Me too.” She pulled him into a fierce hug.

After quite a few minutes they both turned at the sound of soft chuckling behind them. “What’s so funny Durron?” Wedge asked suspiciously.

“Just the fact that Han should start getting used to being called Grandpa,” he replied with another soft chuckle.

“Kyp, are you trying to tell us something?” Syal asked sweetly.

“Huh? Oh…OH…oh no. Just that at the end of this war I have a feeling that, well, that the names Fel and Solo are going to have many new additions,” and with that Syal laughed, for anyone to picture Han Solo and Soontir Fel as grandparents would have to laugh.

~*~*~*~*~*

Some years later, after the Vong had finally left, they walked hand in hand down to the water's edge. Jag and Jaina Fel stood, their eyes deeply staring into one another’s. The soft sound of waves gently rolling onto the shore around their feet was mingled with cheerful laughter of children playing in the water.

With a content sigh Jag drew Jaina closer to him. “You know love, this is life.”
