Awesome post, Lady Padme! I am really going to miss this story when I m gone.
More bad news: I *only* have the SE of the OT. Yes, unfortunately, my brother stole back his originals when he bought me the SE. So will just those do?

I tried to make peanut butter cookies today. sad The first batch burned, and they're all shaped very weirdly... I think I did something wrong.... Otherwise I would share...
What I would like to share, however, is that as of today I am no longer a teenager!
Woohoo!

Jedi_Liz: How nice to see you again! Hope you enjoy what you read, esp. Luke and Vader's lightsaber battle. happy

DarthMasan: Thank you! When I started the story I was just hoping to hit 250, so I'm really excited about this.

maramijade: happy little people wink

RebelMom: Yeah, Vader isn't usually in a good mood in the best of times.

inez: Three more posts to go...last one for the 19th. Hope you like the end!

Kirana_Ti: Happy 20th birthday! How exciting! If you were Chinese you could clean up on red envelopes (i.e. MONEY!). Hope you got a lot of good gifts, anyway. happy

As for viewing SW:

* sighs *

All right, just the SE--although I must say, having Greedo shoot first really ruined the SE for me.

All right, what food to send out today?
Thinks about it...how about some ethnic food?

Shark's fin soup with abalone, Peking duck with plum sauce, sweet and sour pork, shrimp with snow peas, lobster with scallion and ginger sauce, and drunken chicken.

Enjoy!

Okay, I don't know how to cook it, but if I'm right, drunken chicken is a cold chicken dish, where the chicken is steamed and then marinated in a sauce that has a lot of rice wine (or some sort of alcohol), so that when you eat it, it has an alcoholicky flavor. It's actually quite good.

I'm not sure if it's called 'drunken chicken' in English. I'm just translating literally from Chinese happy

Chapter Thirty-six

“What’s the delay?” Vader asked, as he approached the cockpit door.

The pilot turned back, bracing himself for the encounter with the Dark Lord. “I—I’ve just received a communiqué from planetside, my lord.”

“And?” Vader demanded impatiently.

“It—it seems the prisoner has escaped,” the pilot said, nervously. “The ground commander says the prisoner was taken by what appears to be two or three humans and one Wookiee.”

“How could a whole company of troops be so impotent against so few?” Vader asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

“My—my lord, the ground commander says that a horde of indigenous creatures attacked them at the same time. The troops were overwhelmed. Then—not long after the prisoner escaped, the creatures all dis—disappeared.”

Vader was silent for a moment, and then said, “How did the prisoner escape? On foot?”

“No, my lord. The ground commander reports he and his accomplices acquired a transport—one of ours.”

“Does this useless ground commander have a lock on the transport?”

“Yes, my lord,” the pilot said, “The transport is approaching sector seven-one-three.”

“Dispatch a message to all the ships stationed around Cordenia. I want all units to be deployed to prevent any ships from escaping.”

“Yes, my lord,” the pilot said, as Vader left the cockpit. The pilot quickly opened the loading ramp, and Vader disembarked.

Taking a moment to wipe the sweat off his forehead, the pilot shook with relief and then dispatched the message as ordered.

**********************************

Back inside the cockpit of the ‘fastest hunk of junk’ in the galaxy, Han started the preflight check. Chewbacca sat next to him in the copilot’s chair completing his own pre-flight tasks.

Toward the rear of the ship, Luke and Leia were tending to each others’ wounds with bacta ointment, while the droids sat nearby, quiet for once.

Through the open cockpit door, Han turned, “You realize that they’re looking for us, right? There were five Star Destroyers out there when we landed and there could easily be more by now, and who knows how many TIE fighters.”

“Well, we can’t stay here forever,” Luke said. “What about flying the Falcon away from here, but keeping low to the ground to avoid detection? Get to the night side of the planet; there are bound to be fewer ships out there, and then try to make the jump into hyperspace as quickly as possible.”

Han grunted, considering Luke’s suggestion. He looked back down on his scopes. “Damn!”

“What is it?” Leia asked, looking up from bandaging Luke’s leg.

“They’ve rounded up the cavalry. Imperial speeders and—whoa! Two AT-ATs approaching this canyon. Damn! I knew we should have ditched the speeder earlier.”

“We couldn’t have gotten down the canyon wall without it,” Leia reminded him.

“Well, make sure you’re strapped in,” Han said. “Chewie, get us out of here.”

Chewbacca gave a growl and pulled back on the controls. The ellipsoid ship eased out of canyon opening and shot off into space.

Once out of the atmosphere, their worst fears were realized. All five Star Destroyers were waiting for them, and at least sixty TIE fighters and TIE bombers. The Star Destroyers were arranged in a pentagonal array, and stayed in a holding pattern while the TIE fighters and TIE bombers zoomed forward to engage the Falcon. This time, there was no one else to divert the action away. The Millennium Falcon would have to run the gauntlet of the Imperial ships and the asteroid belt on its own.

“Here’s where the fun begins,” Han muttered, pulling back on the throttle. “Chewie full power on the deflector shields—front and rear.”

Chewbacca nodded his head and complied.

“Hey, you two well enough back there to man the gun towers? I’m gonna need Chewie’s help here for this.”

“Yes,” Luke and Leia answered at once. They headed quickly for the gun tower rung ladders. Leia climbed to the top tower and Luke climbed down to the bottom one.

“Make sure you strap yourself in, sweetheart,” Han called out with a grin, remembering the last two times Leia had manned the guns for him.

“Shut up!” Leia snapped as she strapped herself in. She looked down the scopes. “Here they come.”

At once, the two gun towers began firing out shots at the approaching fighters. Han aimed his ship close to the asteroid belt to minimalize his contact with the Star Destroyers. Flying just inside the belt, he tried moving the Falcon away from the Imperial ships.

The Star Destroyers on the other side of the asteroid field matched his moves, not letting him out of their sights, while the TIE fighters and TIE bombers pummeled the Falcon’s defenses with a steady barrage of laser blasts as they flew around the ellipsoid ship in formations clearly aimed at herding the Falcon toward the Star Destroyers.

Han didn’t like the way things were looking. Between the Star Destroyers, the TIE fighters and the asteroids, he had precious little maneuvering room, and he didn’t want to risk the jump to hyperspace with all that interference. Something had to give. With an oath, Han pushed down on the throttle, sending the Falcon into a steep dive and then maneuvered out of the asteroid belt. The remaining TIE fighters and TIE bombers followed, unshakeable. Luke and Leia were doing their best to ward off the smaller ships but the sheer numbers of TIEs coming at them was overwhelming.

The Millennium Falcon shot out of the asteroid belt, and the two nearest Star Destroyers immediately diverted their path and headed toward the Falcon. The swarming of the TIE fighters and TIE bombers was making it difficult for Han to maneuver for open space.

“Chewie, how long before we can get the coordinates from the nav-computer?”

Chewbacca growled.

“I know we’ve got a lot of interference, you big fur ball, but how long?”

Chewbacca grunted out his answer.

“Five more minutes! We’re going to be floating space debris by then!” Han said, as he sent the Falcon on another wild swerve. The Star Destroyers were coming closer. Han looked down at his scopes, noting the location of the ominous blips that signaled the enormous Imperial ships and then said, “Full power front shields, I’m going to turn her around.”

Chewbacca growled in amazement.

“I know what I’m doing, just turn her around! Full speed on the sublight engines!”

The Falcon swung around in a sharp turn and charged toward the nearest Star Destroyer. The abrupt turn and the swiftness of the attack took the Star Destroyer off guard. Instead of turning on the tractor beam to pull in the freighter, the Star Destroyer swerved to avoid impact, and inadvertently hit its sister ship, which had been following too closely. At that moment, Leia hit one of the TIE bombers in her field of vision, and the damaged fighter tumbled wildly into the first Star Destroyer, smashing into the bridge.

Klaxons blared and lights flashed on the two damaged ships, which slowly sunk away from the battle.

Han gave a lopsided grin and quickly pulled back on the Falcon’s controls trying to move his ship away from the other three pursuing Star Destroyers. The first of the three was none other than Executor, Darth Vader’s personal ship, and it was closing in rapidly.

“Chewie full power!”

Chewbacca growled.

“What do you mean we’re on full power? We’re going to be in tractor beam range on that ship in two seconds!” Han took his ship on a quick swerve, trying another way to stay out of the tractor beam’s range, but wasn’t fast enough. The Millennium Falcon gave a jarring buckle as the tractor beam locked, and then the forward thruster engines began to whine in protest as the Falcon was pulled back toward the Star Destroyer.

The TIE fighters and TIE bombers received the signal that their quarry had been acquired and peeled away back from the field of the tractor beam.

“Han, what’s going on?” Leia asked over the intercom.

“Captain Solo,” Threepio said, entering the cockpit, “If I may—“

“No!” Han said, sharply with a forbidding look at Threepio. He turned back to the intercom. “We’re caught in their tractor beam. It’s pulling us in.”

“Oh, not again,” Luke moaned. “I don’t think hiding away in the storage compartments is going to do the trick this time.”

“Captain Solo,” Threepio tried again, but was cut off by Han.

“Shut up, Threepio!”

Chewbacca growled out a suggestion.

“Yeah, but Chewie, if we reverse the accelerator, throw out the flak canisters then do a quick re-engagement on the forward thrusters we’re going to burn out the hyperdrive motivator. There’s not much point jumping away from here to end up with a dead ship in the middle of no—what is that infernal racket?”

R2-D2 was beeping and warbling in a frenzied manner, while the rongo was barking at the top of its vocal simulation volume. Han swiveled around in his chair. “What the hell is going on? Don’t tell me the magnets from the tractor beam cause droid insanity!”

“Please, Captain Solo, if I may,” Threepio said quickly, “Artoo and Mishi think they have a way out of this problem.”

“Artoo and Mishi?” Han was incredulous.

“Mishi says he is able to patch into Imperial frequencies. If Artoo can feed him the instructions, Mishi could use the Millennium Falcon’s transmitter booster to send a remote signal into the Star Destroyer to shut down the tractor beam.”

Han sat stunned for a second and then said, “What the hell. Anything is better than just sitting here waiting for them to pick us up. Do it.” He turned to Chewbacca. “Chances are, that rongo thing is going to send a ‘hello’ message to the Empire and drag us in faster. If, by bizarre chance it means what it says about shutting down the tractor beam and they can pull this off, that tractor beam won’t be down for more than thirty seconds. Do we have the coordinates from the nav-computer ready?”

Chewbacca growled in the affirmative.

“Han, what’s going on down there?” Leia’s voice came down from the intercom.

“Just hold tight,” Han instructed. “Keep your fingers on the trigger buttons. We may have a way out of this.” He turned around to see what the droids were doing and beheld a strange tableau.

Mishi had positioned himself next to the Falcon’s computer access panel. Artoo was positioned along Mishi’s right flank and had inserted his access arm into the rongo-droid’s access panel, while Mishi had his access arm inserted into the Falcon’s access panel. Servomotors in the access panel were whirring and clicking at a rapid rate.

“Geez, guys, get yourselves a room!” Han muttered, as he turned back to monitor the Falcon’s instrumentation.

Suddenly, the instruments on the control panel indicated the Falcon was no longer in the thrall of the tractor beam. The field before them was clear. His heart thudding in excitement, Han pulled back on the throttle and engaged the hyperdrive motivator, sending the Millennium Falcon hurtling back into hyperspace.

You know, the Shapiti remind me of the Ewoks for some reason.
I'm glad to see Mishi getting the Rebels out of this jam. I wonder what that will do to Han's ego...

And a last little bit for all you Dark-side lovers...

Chapter Thirty-seven

Vader strode swiftly down the main bridge-level corridor on the Executor toward his meditation chamber. Behind him was a grisly scene of mass execution. At least fifty Imperial Navy personnel from enlisted men to Admiral Maset paid the price for allowing the Millennium Falcon and its most valuable prize of Luke Skywalker escape from the Dark Lord’s clutches. Twenty more died when Vader heard that Imperial ships had engaged the Rebel fleet in battle, but the majority of the Rebels had also managed to escape. The men whose lives were spared trembled in terror as they quickly, quietly and efficiently continued their tasks.

Inside his meditation chamber Darth Vader paced for nearly an hour, as his black rage swirled around, making unbolted objects fly around the chamber in a frenzied manner. Luke had escaped, again. Vader tried to slow down his breathing to allow it to match the respirator’s set rate. He tried to reign in his impatience, to be philosophical. This would not be their only encounter. There would be more in the future, and he would see to it that Luke had no more chances to escape. Vader smiled grimly behind his mask. Luke. If you only knew the secrets I could tell you, you would know your days with the Rebels are numbered.

**********************************

In the magnificent Imperial Palace on Coruscant, the Governor’s Ball was in full swing. The Regional Governors and their families, various dignitaries and court sycophants were all in attendance. The main ballroom, built to hold over fifty thousand was strained to its full capacity. Uniformed servants milled around serving the well-heeled guests. The strains of the Emperor’s favorite music drifted out the large floor-to-ceiling length windows into the flower scented gardens behind the palace.

Storm troopers, looking incongruous amidst the gay decorations and festive garb of the attendees stood guard outside the ballroom, while inside, the Emperor’s Red Guard stood like silent crimson wraiths guarding the doors.

The guests at the party danced and drank the expensive liquor and sampled the exotic canapés provided for them. They talked and laughed and mingled. Their outwardly benign and welcoming host commanded them to be festive, and ever mindful of the sharp claws hidden under the Emperor’s placid exterior, the guests strove to be as festive as possible.

In the center of all the activities, on a raised dais set over a slowly rotating platform, sat his Imperial Majesty, Emperor Palpatine. One Red Guard stood sentry at each of the four corners of the platform. Behind the Emperor stood a row of fabulously beautiful and scantily clad women who fawned over his every need. The Emperor took in everything at the party with his gimlet eyes. Every once in a while a luminary would approach the platform to offer the Emperor tribute or obeisance, which the Emperor graciously accepted.

Conspicuously absent from this gala was the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. Vader usually attended these functions as a silent, glowering presence, but raised whispers circulated amongst the guests at his absence from this party. The Emperor heard the whispers and smiled, loving the fear, confusion and discord that were created whenever there was uncertainty. He fed off these dark fears, gaining strength from others’ weaknesses.

The gold gilded front doors opened and a young woman with a mane of red-gold hair entered. She wore a lovely sea-green gown that softly clung to her slender frame, and she walked with the proud bearing of a highborn woman or a warrior. She looked neither right nor left as she approached the dais and waited for it to complete its rotation. When the Emperor finally faced her, she waited for his acknowledgement of her presence.

The Emperor smiled when he saw her, a smile that simultaneously sent a chill of fear and a thrill of fanatic happiness down her spine, but she betrayed none of these emotions outwardly as she knelt before her master.

“Mara, my dear child,” the Emperor said, extending his hand. “Come up and have a seat beside me.”

Mara Jade climbed onto the dais and sat down on the low stool that stood before the Emperor’s marvelously carved and decorated throne.

“Leave us,” the Emperor commanded his Red Guards and the fawning young women. They left; the young girls giving Mara looks of envy intermingled with loathing.

The Emperor turned and took Mara’s hand in his. She felt his touch with a mixture of fanatical ecstasy and bone-deep revulsion. “What is the problem my dear?” Palpatine asked, solicitously. “You look so sad.”

Mara trembled, hardly daring to meet the Emperor’s eye. When she spoke, her voice was barely more than a whisper. “I’m so sorry, my master. I failed you.”

“Why do you say that?”

Mara looked surprised. “But—the Rebel base—my infiltrator!” She stumbled over her words. “I—I failed to get the correct location of their base, and they’ve slipped away again.”

The Emperor looked genuinely amused. “Is that what bothered you? Oh, my dear, I wouldn’t worry about those pitiful little Rebels. We shall crush the Rebellion in good time. No, you did something far more important for me, my dear.”

Mara’s face registered her confusion. “I did?”

“Yes, my child. You brought about a meeting between Vader and Skywalker. I’ve been wanting to know how such an encounter would go for a long time.”

“Why? What’s so important about that?”

The Emperor’s benign expression changed to one that was cold, hard, pitiless and depthlessly evil. “I am the ruler of this Galaxy,” he announced. “I am the master of the Sith. As long as I am in control, there shall be no others vying for my throne.”

“Of course, my master,” Mara agreed, still confused.

“Vader has always been the model of loyalty and devotion and he has served me well these past two decades. But I always knew the latent seeds of treachery lay in his mind. Skywalker is his son.”

“His what?” Mara had never known of Vader’s past.

“You find it hard to believe a woman could have loved Vader? But there was, once. A very lovely woman. A woman who tried her hardest to stand between me and my destiny. A woman who had to be destroyed.”

“You—destroyed her?”

Palpatine smiled, but it was not a pleasant smile. “Yes. She was the sacrifice—the price for Vader’s commitment to me. But, unbeknownst to me, she had a son. A son who was hidden from me and from Vader by the Jedi. A son who is a danger to me. As long as this son lives, Vader’s loyalty is compromised. While they are apart, I have no doubt about Vader’s devotion, but if he were to gain his son’s trust, he would be quite a danger to me. I have no doubt that if that time comes, you will do your duty to serve and protect me.”

“Of course, my master,” Mara said, automatically.

The Emperor laughed, his chilling, cackling cadences sending shivers throughout the ballroom. “Ah, Vader thinks I don’t know—but I see everything! And I will deal with my apprentice as he deserves…all in good time.”
