Well, this has been floating around cyberspace for a while, so I figured I'd put it all in one place and let the world outside my friends and family rip into it. This footage is from a fanfilm I was working on about 4 years ago. Unfortunately, hurricane Katrina blew through town and I lost everything, including costumes, equipment, props the works.
It was to be called Outlaws and was going to be around 30 minutes long. It involved a pair of inexperienced rogues racing around the galaxy far far away searching for a legendary treasure after their mentor is killed. After they get the final "piece" of the map they've been assembling, they realize that the attention they're getting might be more than they can handle and they set about recruiting their mentors old allies, including an ex imperial turned space pirate, an alien slicer, and an exiled queen with a small fleet at her disposal. Rounding out this motley crew was to be their droid pilot and an old bounty hunter enemy turned ally. It was going to end with a climactic clash with the Empire and some surprise revelations about one of the main characters. Whew!
Be forewarned that this was made about 4 years ago when I was much more inexperienced. If some of the "cinematography" looks a little "I Love Lucy" It's because the whole movie was shot in a room about the size of a toyota tercel. And it was VHS. Captured with the worst card Office Depot had to offer. But I really like my color grading. I'll stick by that. In any event I've rattled on long enough. Take a look at a few WIP that survived if you like and let me know what you think.

Edit: After hitting the post button I remembered that the Audio is awful since none of this was ADRed and there are actually unfinished shots mixed in with the semi finished shots. This is the first thing I've ever shared. I didn't realize how nerve racking it is.

I'm impressed. For it's age and your resources, you did a really fantastic job. I especially liked the blaster fight and the map scene.

Looked like it could have been a good movie. Now that you have more experience, you should regroup. You have some good test shots and video story boards already together. I would encourage you to make the film. It looks like you were on to something.

I like this, too bad it wasn't finished. Now I feel the same way I feel at the end of each 24 episode.

Is that star wars bounty hunter I'm seeing in the background and hearing in the sound effects?

Many of the backgrounds in the shootout are photoshop'ed screen grabs from Bounty hunter. I changed the colors and added signs and a bit of texture here and there to make them less recognizable. (I figured a lot of people hadn't played BH anyway, and the backgrounds in that game are incredible, especially in the first 2 levels) There are also a few walls and columns from KOTOR mixed in just to further "disguise" things.
As for the sound effects, most of them come straight from the files you can get from TFN (lots of Dark Forces 2 in there.) The only two I had to manufacture, per se, were my DL-44 sound, which is a union of a stormtrooper blaster from ANH and the characteristic Han Solo BLAGOW! that I lifted from a Clone Wars battle scene. The other one is the sound of a probe droid firing in ESB and Chewies bowcaster from ROTJ. Incidentally this sound (one of my favorite blaster noises
) is also used as the sniper rifle sound in Bounty Hunter which is where I , after running my PS2 through my cheap capture card, lifted it.
While I'm here, I've decided to sort of make this thread a sort of shrine to the lost film. My friends that participated in it all have pictures they took and there are other bits of footage that survived. I might periodically post more images, and if there is sufficient interest, I might revive the project. So far the responses I've gotten have been very positive.
Thanks to everybody who's taken a look.

RE: Some footage from my doomed film.
Here's a few pictures that show one of the only main characters who actually "existed" in the Star Wars universe. He's also the source of my Avatar.
I sent the picture to my father and this arrived in the mail a week or two later.
This was the prototype costume we mocked up from random costume bits.
And this is the final costume as it appeared in the film. (Or would have if DV tapes could sit in salt water for six weeks and still function.)
As for why I included such an obscure character in the film, he just looked so darn cool. Josh (the guy under the helmet) thought that in true origin story fashion, he should begin the film with a clone helmet, then exchange it for the stormie helmet after the final battle. I nixed that since, quite simply, we had no clone helmet.
Whether or not Stormtrooper X is a clone of Jango or not is left ambiguous in my script, although it does seem like a cool idea.

*just looked at footage*
This is one of the token moments where I say: "Damn Nature"
The footage was really promising, and in fact it got me pumped up a bit. No Jedi (as far as I can could see), blasters and smugglers... Great stuff!
Dare I ask if you will try and re-do it? This could be a gem!

Thanks for all the good feedback. I was on the phone last night with my buddy Josh who was involved in just about every stage of the movie and he said he would like to participate in a rehash of the project. He's real excited about all the positive vibes the footage has gotten especially considering the shoestring budget we were working with. I do mean shoestring too. Check out our camera and lighting setup...
And our "props"...
Those cheapo plastic dart guns from wal-mart painted black and sponged with silver are pretty intimidating in low-res. That was sort of the whole philosophy of all the props and costumes in the flick. Less was more. Our imperial officer uniform didn't even have a back on it.
My Z-95 pilot "chest box" was nothing more than the blister off of a package of pokemon toys painted gray and detailed with parts from a stealth bomber and a tie interceptor. Since it's only glimpsed briefly, it didn't need to be Master Replicas quality.
In any event, I've decided in light of the fact that the movie was super cheap to begin with, it wouldn't hurt to attempt it again once I get back to New Orleans (well Metairie anyway). I'm glad there's some interest in it.
Again thanks for all the positive responses. It kinda takes the sting out of losing most of the production.
Oh and I figured most TFNers would get the moon reference. That scene still makes me smile a bit.
Edit: I added one more brief shot to the playlist. It's not really impressive but it's got a lot of roto in it that's not on a lightsaber.

Oh man. All that stuff looked fantastic. Forget the low budget and resources. The footage you put up glowed and would've made a really fantastic fan film. Too bad it wasn't meant to be.
Great job and I hope this doesn't stop you from making fan films.

RE: Some footage from my doomed film.
Well, it's official. Star Wars Outlaws is a go for a second time. There were a lot of goals I had for this project and a lot of reactions I wanted to get. I'm hearing all the right reactions to the footage (and the footage I put up wasn't even the really exciting stuff, especially without the context of the rest of the movie to know what's going on). The reaction has been too positive for me to just abandon the project.
My friends that helped me out the first time will be taking part in the rehash, albeit in a diminished capacity. The reason for this is that we're all Ex Air Force folks who are or will shortly be scattered to the four corners of the country.(Almost literally. One of us is in Maine, one in Las Vegas, one in Missouri, and I'm going back to Louisiana.)
Hopefully I'll have some new content to put up soon to keep interest in the project up. In the meantime here's some more pictures from the original production to show how fun it is. If you've never tried a fanfilm you really should even if it's a small one. Even years later everybody involved still talks about how much fun they had making it.
Priscilla in her queen costume putting antlers on yours truly.
Petey dons my Jedi robe and some old curtains to play Ewelduc, an alien slicer.
Writer, director, protagonist, and I moonlight as an abyssan bounty hunter. (I don't even change my jacket.)
Petey as a dancing Rodian.
Petey and Josh as Stormtrooper X and Ewelduc.
And finally I just went downstairs and took this one as a sort of Phoenix out of the ashes pic. This is the Stormtrooper X helmet recovered from my house, still caked in some Katrina mud. X will live again.
Keep the responses coming. I've been getting a kick out of the reaction to our "release".
And again, thanks for all the good feedback.

All the effects in the movie were done using AE 5.0 which was old even then. The shots were keyed using multiple passes with the color difference key and color key. As the footage was all VHS and compressed very awkwardly, a lot of rotoscoping was needed as well, especially on my friend Josh since his very white complexion actually bled into the bluescreen a lot more than we anticipated. we eventually adjusted our lights to compensate, but he is still pretty washed out in a lot of shots. Good lighting is "key" when doing a blue screen shoot.
The look of the film was accomplished by crushing the blacks in curves and then overlaying a color solid with it's opacity turned down. This accounts for the sort of rosy character to the blaster fight scene. The shipboard scenes were done very neutral and dark (in the story, Gavin inherits the ship after his mentor, the previous owner, dies. Thusly the ship is very cold and almost tomblike.)
Finally to sort of undo that VHS look I copied the whole comp on top of itself and set the transfer mode to hard light, then blurred the top layer a few pixels and dialed down it's opacity till it looked the way I wanted it. The look I was going for was the look of the Jon Ostrander, Jan Duresema (sp?) comics where the color is very bold, but the blacks are very black.
The whole project was edited with Sonic Foundry Vegas 5 (it wasn't owned by Sony then) which I highly recommend, at least for people that like a tactile interface and are a little more visually oriented.
