You're going to need more than one weekend for choreography... Shooting, I'd set aside 1 or 2 days to shoot the lot, and another day for pickups and reshoots. Rotoscoping will take a few thousand years... So your entry should be ready by LCC 2878 (anyone know the roman numerals for that?)

not really. It's a choreography contest, not a short-film contest. They should be fine, as long as their choreo is fine.

FSFilms, the thing is that I wanted to use this entry to create a small piece of awesome work. I think that I have a good knowledge of visual effects and filming, but I haven't done anything worth mentioning with it yet. So I wanted to create more than just a little choreography video. In fact, I wanted to take this chance as an opportunity to do a decent short film indeed. I wanted to give it my all in every aspect you can think of. Due to various problems, one of them being the deadline, I know that I will not be able to finish this as I wanted it to. And I do not want to deliver a video of which I will always know that it could have been much better, if only whatever.

So I choose perfection over entering a contest that I would probably not have won anyway. As I said, if I get to film something decent this year, I will probably release my own duel short film aside from the LCC sooner or later. If not, I will probably be able to enter next year's contest.
But if I enter a contest for the sake of the competition, I will make sure to deliver an entry that will actually be a challenge to top for the other entrants.

...judging by the numbers, I think you might want to get your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson to do it. Maybe he's around 30 at that time.

I think a lot of people get into this problem, they see an assured audience and they're tempted to go way big with their movie cause hey, people are actually gonna watch it. We did. We started this year with a 15 page script, acknowledging we'd have to chop the damn out of it to fit in the guidelines, then release a directors cut like we did last year. But when we actually stepped back and had a look at what it would take to do right, we scrapped it, started from scratch, and came up with something that was less intensive and more fun. Fun's what this whole contest should be about, not back breaking labour (rotoscoping being the equivalent for star wars geeks), it should be for people who just love doing this stuff and wanna have fun doing so. If there were fabulous prizes involved, sure, it'd be a different story, but as is, I certainly don't judge anyone's filmmaking ability on their LCC entries, I just think, these guys had the incentive and perseverance to go make something, anything, happen. That's awesome.

(PS: Y'all are being drama queens about rotoscoping. We did all the rotoscoping for desperation move in 3 days, that's all it need take. Rotoscoping parties with 'za and burgs and just enough booze so you don't end up with vomit coloured sabers (or so much you wake up the next morning with no idea of what happened but you find a perfectly rendered black saber on your footage) are awesome. And since it takes no skill you can rope in any old jerk on your cell phone's 'recent calls' list for a few hours)

If anyone actively complains about rotoing lightsabers around me I will punch them in the face. They are the easiest thing to roto ever.

EVER!

Well, maybe a bouncing ball is easier…still, no complaining! I wish I could show ya'll the shot I just got done rotoing (and I was one of three artists working on it for three weeks), but alas, 'tis under NDA. It'd look so impressive on my reel…grr…

The thing is that I do not have a very good camera / equipment, nor experience, nor a very enthusiastic crew. So in order to create something I can be proud of (and I won't go for anything less), I have to make up for that with extra perfectionism and hard work.

I know that this is primarily about having fun... but delivering the most excellent work I can entertains me.

Weren't you rotoing lightsabers in HD?
I think that'll ease the pain from what a lot of people are working with.

He's speaking in terms of complexity. A single-spline rigid object that waves around is easy when it comes to roto.
