I was wondering,
Say you're in university or something, and you're in a film-making competition, and the award was like, say, $100 or something like that.
and you made a star wars or indiana jones fan-film,
and you won,
would you be allowed to accept the money???
as i know that you can't make money by selling the fan-film.
would you be allowed?

That strikes me as an awfully bad area to go into, but presumably the contest wouldn't allow entries that people didn't have the rights to (not just in the fan films sense, but with things like music etc.).

[Sidious]I will make it legal[/Sidious]
Seriously though, no. It falls under the category of fan films for profit, regardless of whether you're selling it or not or just entering it into a contest for money.
Now, if winning the contest is more important than the money, then I suppose you could donate the prize money to charity, in which case I think you'd be ok, though I'm not sure I'd risk it.
LFL are unlikely to come down on you over a $100 prize, they have better things to do...but you never now. It might set a precedent that LFL don't want, so that may make them more likely to step in.

Only if she is 18?
Well, the Squirrel Factor III just mopped up at our U of M film festival winning us about $300 worth of goodies.
Lucas' lawyers didn't pop out of the bushes with a subpoena or anything.
I'm not really sure about the legalities of it. I'm pretty sure that it probably illegal. As far as I know simply making the film to begin with is considered illegal, Lucas is just smart enough to look the other way.
I would say don't worry about it. No one cares about student film festivals, at least when we are talking about schools with out huge film programs. In our fest there wasn't a single entry that was without at least one copyright violation.

I agree... Lucas is far too rich and too busy to worry about us Fan Film makers. If he hurts us... then in some way it will hurt him. He's a clever man is George... i very much doubt he'll step in.

Also, keep in mind that the rules for a "serious" film and a parody are different.

I would think it's legal, actually. What is the $100 really for? It's to award you on your level of skill and acumen shown in your film. Are you selling the film? Are they buying rights to show the film? No.

I'm afraid it's not legal. Lawyers have already told me about such things.
It falls under the category of "making money".
In any event, it's not something you need to worry about. The organizers of the competition need to get all the paperwork in order to show licensing and ownership and such. And if you can't provide that (which obviously you can't), you would not qualify.
If the organizers are not aware of this, someone should bring them up to speed. Otherwise they are up for a serious liability.

Be on the lookout for Uncle George.
He's going to spend several thousand dollars on lawyers
to sue you so he can recoup that little $100 dollars of yours.
For real, though.

$100 seems a bit stingy to me.

I'd never accept money for something like that.
Bragging rights are sufficient.

But parodies are legal under copyright law, aren't they? I mean, unless you use the copyrighted music or sound effects or something.

If anything, it is immoral. You would be making money off of direct ideas that are not yours (depending on how much Star Wars is in your film)
