Greetings.

This is a tutorial I've made for rotoscoping Lightsabres in the free open source software known as Blender (you've probably heard of it before). This is a sample of what you can get out of it Lightsabre wise.

And of course, here is the tutorial to download. I've tried to make it as noob friendly as possible.
I would appreciate some feedback as this is my first tutorial.

I've heard of people using Blender before. Not sure if I've seen a tutorial.
Nice job though. I'm sure it'll be very helpful for those looking for an affordable route.

I've seen heaps of people do it with Blender but keep it to themselves, no one (to my knowledge) has made a tutorial for sabres on video. I put a stop to that happy

There sure are a lot of Jedis, Padawans, and Younglings who still live with Mom and Dad and chill out in the backyard or hang out in parking structures and forests.

Cool.

Maybe you could use your ancient weapon to trim that tree in the background
or help Mom make dinner, slice some bread and make toast at the same time,or perhaps even you could groom your dog with your lightsaber.

Alota jedis? There's nine of use here ("Mom" and Dad not included in those figures) they come in handy when filming.

I thought there was no plural for "Jedi".

Adding an "S" would make it "Jedis", pronounced "Jed-Is"

Very, very nice. I too have made a tutorial for making lightsabers in blender. I made a web page tutorial for rotoscoping a single image(I used add instead of screen, but after looking at your nodes, very nice). A few times I have been asked to make a tutorial for rotoing videos, and I was unable. I use shape keys, which are more tedious and if you find a mistake, you cant go back and edit it. Really stinks. Good call on the empties. If you dont mind, could you tell me how you told the empties to move the blade around. Thanks

To make the empties move the individual vertexes, go to edit mode and select your vertex and press ctrl-h and add empty.
