For the record, ILM's most recent work can be viewed in Scorsese's Gang of New York.
I just saw that recently.....on Christmas......and FYI, it's
GANGS OF NEW YORK
not
Gang of New York

OT
Gangs of new york had one of the worst 3rd acts of the year. But the first 2 were great...
More OT
What CG did ILM do on GoNY? I wasn't really looking for any so I didn't notice it.
Less OT
Be ILM style.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the elephant towards the end of the movie was CG. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but it looked a little fake to me. And I was watching the trailer a couple days ago and watched it frame by frame when Bill was throwing knives at the girl, and saw the CGness of the knives. That's all the CG stuff I noticed; maybe some of the backgrounds too.

AWB: Awright, so my finger slipped. But I suppose given my record I deserved that, well played.
WD: I haven't seen the film so I couldn't say for sure. More than likely, many long shots of old New York (such as the shot on the dock), stuff to make the title Motley Crües more massive than they were on set, etc.
The fact that you noticed none is why ILM is king -- and proves that it is one of the first films in recent years to use FX for what they're MEANT for, which is tell a story.

Gangs of New York
The elephant was most definitely CG, it looked very fake.
Some of the wide wide shots of New York were CG, apperantly they constructed about 2 miles of old New York for the movie in Rome, Italy (I think). But the wide wide shots would have been CGed.
That's the only stuff I noticed.

Dunno where, but they built the giant set (2 miles I also heard) inside a giant building... completely realistic too...(Scorsese actually made sure the actual SHINGLES were the right ones used back then... geeze) so the wide shots COULD have been done physically, but the sky would need to be composited... so i'll bet that's what ILM was doing the most of... and also i'm sure there was some crowd duplication going on.

Wow, it's kinda odd how this thread started out as a "should I try to do all kinds of FX or completely animated films?" discussion and ended up as a gangs of new york discussion.
EDIT: Fixed my post so it made sense.

Well, not EVERY thread, but yeah.....and last time I pointed out on the OTness of a thread it died down as this one has. Last time it was the thread about young fanfilmers and we were talking about the evil dead series and then it died down when I commented on the OTness of the thread. I think I just got a little off topic of talking about being off topic in this thread which has turned off topic from the original topic!!!

RE: Pixar-wannabe or ILM-wannabe?
Just a few notes. Pixar is not a Disney spinoff. Pixar is an independent company that was spun off from the Lucas empire, specifically the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Group. They have a partnership with Disney, they split profits 50-50. Their current deal call for 5 movies if I remember right but there is still discussion if Toy Story 2 is part of that deal or not.
Second thing, ILM could do what Pixar does, nut not vice versa. ILM has produced and sponsored countless of shorts in house (some only internal), the latest being Work in Progress which you can watch at their website. There was also Synchronicity and The Moving Pyramid off the top of my head. They almost did a CG Frankenstein for Universal a few years back. And it seems they will work on their first ever feature length animated movie. Other FX studios have joined in, most notably Imageworks who did The ChubbChubbs and is working on Astroboy. Digital Domain has also made shorts, and on the other hand some traditional animation studios do, or have done VFX: both PDI and Blue Sky now will concentrate mainy on animated CG films and they have closed their VFX divisions; Rhythm and Hues has done special purpose animated films but also does VFX.
As DorkmanScott said Gangs of New York is the latest ILM film. The latest issue of American Cinematographer covers the work done by ILM, I have a summary on my website:
American Cinematographer covers Gangs of New York
Basicly there are 45 VFX shots by ILM, mainly digital matte paintings and set extensions. Most notable is the NY pullback at the beginning, and the view from the cemetary and time transition at the end. Some of the set extensions are in the docks (like when the boxing match takes place in the boat) plus that one shot of the Navy ship firing into NY. Apparently there is a seamless scene also where at the start of the riots the camera comes into the brewery and goes into a hole, and the catacombs are CG. There is also the shot where Bill the Butcher touches his glass eye with a knife.

RE: Pixar-wannabe or ILM-wannabe?
Actually Pixar has had a hand in a few post-production projects (say that five times fast), also creating and finishing many of today's commercials. Most of the time, Pixar does not have the option to place "Produced by Pixar" under the title.
I worked with Pixar on Monsters Inc. and became friends with a few guys who told me so much about little Pixar projects. I am not totally sure if this helps anything, but it seems the public sees ILM as the Allmighty when it comes to film post-prod.
Btw, from what I have personally learned, Pixar such a more friendly environment and at times more professional than what I have witnessed at ILM (I have been affiliated with both), so if you are ever looking for a friendly recommendation, I recommend Pixar.

WETA totally blew me away and now don't think that highly of ILM anymore. Things change, and that is sometimes good to see.
