Ok, i finally purchased a comcorder grin Its a Sony DCR-TRV27. When I was playing with the zoom, I tried zooming in on a door handle. And it was out of focus, nto a little bit out of focus, but alot out of focus, the door handle was a gray blob. So I tried holding the camera there thinking that it would go back into focus, but it didn't. Then with the focus at full I pan to my desk, where there is a pencil holder, and a bookmark in it. And the book mark is as clear as day. The door handle is about 10 ft away, and teh book mark is about 1 1/2 2 ft away..... Then I tried manually focusing it, it took a while to get the lens dial to go all the way around, but I finally was able to see the handle clearly, so now I focus on the bookmark again not touching anything, and its fine (still on manual) So, then i switch of manual, I zoom all the way out find the door handle again then zoom in, (quickly) and it now stays out of focus only for about, 2 seconds. I have noticed that it acts better when the thing your focusing on is well lit, especially indoors. So is this a problem? Or is this just what consumer cameras do? So how fast is it supposed to be able to put something in focus? Thanks

Kyle

If it is badly lit the poor old camera may take a while. The focus is always taken from the thing in the midddle of the frame as well, so make sure you aren't confusing it by having a few things (at different distances) pretty close. It doesn't actually sound as though you have anything wrong with the camera though.

The amount of light does have a lot to do with focus. When the iris is farther open, there is a shallower depth of field, when it is more closed, there is a deep depth of field. This is how Disney was able to make full sized actors look like leprecauns in "Darby O'Gill and the Little People". They used a lot of light and just placed the leprecaun actors farther away from the camera. With everything in focus, the leprecauns looked shorter compared to the actors closer to the camera.

Now if you want to do that rack focus thing where focus shifts from one subject to another, you need less light.

So the problem is lighting, not your cam. BTW, I'd try to keep it off of auto focus for your fan film. Use this little tip to keep everything in focus. First light everything well. Next zoom in on the farthest object in the shot. Zoom out all the way and you should stay in focus as long as your camera position remains constant (tripod).

In addition, by focusing manually you save on battery power as the camera isn't going into autofocus all the time.

The camera focuses on what is in the center of the frame. There must be detail there for it to focus on. Just a uniform gray surface (like that of your zommed in knob) will not work. Point the camera so the EDGE of the knob is in the center of the image, it might catch it then.
