Its just that I seem to be the only one that just phones up my friends and says 'I've got an idea, you wanna make a film?'

Thats how I make all mt films. No Script, only the props we already have, on location in or near our house's.

So ever done it?

I'm technically doing that sometime soon. I suppose it doesn't really count since it is preconceived, but once I actually work on my idea it'll all be on-set improv.

I don't know why everyone is so negative. I actually have a pretty good feeling about this.

I really want to do stuff like that to work on my editing and film-making skills... but I end up taking on big projects instead. Last year Fig gave me the illusion he was doing this - and not only were the improvements in his films obvious with time, but I suspect it was great practice. I actually admire him for that ( shock ).

Naw, my old projects were tied into school projects/presentations. My current work is either helping other projects out or part of some competition.

The only independat project I am currently working on I gave myself a nice fat year to lazyily prepare for.

Spiff, that means a lot to me, man. Ell, from August 2003 to about May 2004 I made about six short films completely, or almost completely, on a whim, about next to nothing at all.

Wipeout

A minute and a half movie about a boy who takes a crap and THEN realizes there's no TP.

Learned: First film ever.

Losing the Game

A five minute film about a guy who tries to get his N64 to work, and takes desperate and even more desperate actions to make it work, getting more and more frustrated with each failure.

Learned: The use of repition of shot style or themes for humor. Editing to music, not getting music to fit the edit.

The Letter

There's about one person who didn't hate this movie, mostly because it was too vague, I think. Thusly, it's largely forgotten, but some may remember it. About a guy writing a letter in a very dramatic setup, intercut with shots of him practicing something that looks like martial arts. Edited to make you think he's writing home before going to war or something. Turns out, he was practicing his movements for putting the letter IN the mailbox, because the cars on his street drive too fast. He ends up getting hit by a car anyway.

Learned: To make damn sure your viewer knows what he's watching.

Heat of the Moment

About two guys who get bored and make cardboard toy guns. Running around and playing with them, they get caught up in the heat of the moment and the guns become real in their hands, because they 'believe' what they're doing.

Learned: Action editing, which I still need a lot of improvement on.

Bloody Mary

A ten minute film chock full of inside jokes to NP2k.com, made for the NP2k film festival. About two guys who try to contact Bloody Mary, the urban myth woman inside the mirror you can see when you repeat her name. Hilarity ensues.

Learned: Writing, and marketing. I have shirts that have sold using a line from the movie, and I realzied that people are more likely to buy things that they can wear that AREN'T esoteric. Name of the game is this: no one cares about your movie, but if there's a memorable line, character, or event...they'll endorse it on their person. (The shirts say "The offer to bite me stands.")

Buddy Chat

My only serious, serious movie so far. About a guy having a buddy chat with two other people discussing the lead characters life, and as the film goes on we discover he's talking with two other mentalities of his psyche.

Learned: ...I shouldn't make serious films. Also dramatic editing. And that the right compostion (as in music) can make or break a film.

So, yeah. Experimentation is fun. Especially if you have some friends to do it with.

I did that a couple times. It was basically, "Hey, wanna make a video?" "Alright, I've got nothing to do for the afternoon." They were both easy two- or three-day more-or-less improv things on VHS. We made one called Crouching Tiger, Hidden Janitor (11 MB) It's dubbed poorly in German, instead of Mandarin, get it? And we made one called Channel Surfing on a Sunday Evening (9 MB). I apologize for the audio; it got condensed in editing, so I had to boost it.

With my current fan film, it's been, "Hey, I'm making this fan film, wanna help?" Most of my friends don't want to get involved in a big project, so I've pretty much ended up doing it all myself, which is kinda frustrating when you're trying to do a good job, ya know?

Lemme think... I did a Christmas one last year of me opening a present, tearing it to shreds, and holding up a box of AE with light coming from behind it. That was 5 hours from concept to completion. Extra kudos for scaring my mom when she heard the distinct sound of tearing wrapping paper on Dec. 24 from the direction of the tree.

I wish! Need tons of planning and a cast and crew. Also need time away from work.

I hate the real world...I think the Dastoli brothers do that. They come out with a new film every month it seems like.

The first film I did was done this way. My ex g/f was in town (we lived 1/2 way across the country) and got bored, so we decided to make stupid little film.

Basic idea was that a Jedi has to build a snowman as part of her training but an evil Sith who doesn't like snowmen comes to destroy it. They fight and the Sith kills the snowman. The Jedi then throws snowballs at him and he runs away.

The entire thing was filmed using a web cam and a laptop. I've since then lost the only copy I had. sad

Speak for yourself!

Movie Spoof 2 Pre-Production: 2 months
Movie Spoof 2 Production: 18 months and counting!

I actually have just called up people and made a movie one time. We finished it in an afternoon, but I didn't have the will to rotoscope a battle with six lightsabers.

We'll do these type of films sometimes. It seems like the ones I do by myself turn out so much better than the ones with my friends...hm...something's not right...
