****SPOILERS**** of course

Reactions:
0:08 Barefoot Jedi?
0:16 A little pedestrian so far.
0:23 Major stick bashing.
0:38 Effective music.
0:50 Getting cheesy.
0:51 Nice effect.
1:03 <nelsonmuntzvoice> Ha-ha!</nelsonmuntzvoice>
1:09 Well, now we know who they are.
1:18 Ha. Nice one.
1:27 Don't take turns.
1:28 Gross.
1:44 Judging by the speed of their reactions, he was jumping in slow motion.
1:50 LOL!
1:52 Um, is this a comedy?
2:24 Really slow roll.
2:41 That's better. Good energy.
2:45 Clunk!
3:14 Not bad.
3:34 To be continued?
3:40 Those men are holding hands!

This one was pretty good. The fighters weren't especially athletic, and they needed to go faster, but they seemed pretty into the characters. There were some parts that were kinda comically cheesy, and I'm not quite sure if that was intentional or not. If it was, it worked. If it wasn't intentional, well, 6.8 on the Unintentional Comedy Scale.

Reactions:
0:06 Tragedy or spoof?
0:35 Like the running-with-saber sound FX.
0:52 Not much room.
1:06 Bash-bash-bash.
1:15 Unrealistic.
1:39 Good use of close-ups.
2:05 I think the scorch mark is way too far behind him.
2:23 So it's a comedy? Was that other stuff supposed to be funny?
2:33 Comedy. Now I'm confused.
2:45 Not bad.
2:50 Heh heh.
2:54 That's not funny.

OK…. Addressing the choreography first, there was too much stick bashing, especially up on the catwalk thing. In that narrow space, they probably should have gone for thrust-and-parry rapier-style fight. Instead, they just held their sabers out in front of them and bashed with small swings. And I don't get if this was supposed to be a comedy all the way through or what. It was like serious, then broadly comic, then cut off the guy's head, which was totally incongruous with the tone of the film at that point. So while I give kudos for creativity and thinking outside the box, the choreography was only so-so and the film itself didn't quite work for me.

Reactions:
0:14 Whoa. Cool jump. Woulda been better if the guy just blocked it over his head instead of rolling though.
0:20 Good speed.
0:40 They've slowed way down with the two sabers.
0:52 A little repetitive in that part.
1:05 Circling is good.
1:12 Um, Ok.

I liked this one. I think the guy leaping from the table was maybe the best single move in the competition. Then the film jumped right into a fast-paced fight, which led me to think this would be one of the best. Unfortunately, however, the fighters slowed down considerably when the guy took out his second saber. Cinematically, I think the editing could have been tighter. Quicker cuts between the close-ups in particular would have added more excitement. Good overall, but not good enough to win.
****************
#25
This is a solid entry, but not spectacular. The little saber taps are a good idea, but in a fight that's only a minute long, there was too much circling and glaring at each other.
*****************
#26
Reactions:
0:18 Nice camera tilt.
0:27 Good idea, but I don't think that's what that would look like.
0:35 Good energy so far; not quite fast enough.
0:38 BAM! Nice.
1:00 "He broked my saber!"
1:12 Huh? Oh, OK.

This was another solid entry. They were energetic, but not quite up to the same speed as some of the others. The Force Push looked very powerful. I liked the idea of the damaged saber too. My only complaint is with the ending; it wasn't clear what happened until after the guy was walking away. That didn't work for me.
******************
#27
Reactions:
0:18 Looks like this is gonna be fun.
0:35 Or maybe not…
0:53 "I double dare ya to step over this line!"
1:02 Good reactions.
1:09 Uh oh!
1:12 LOL! This just made my top three!
1:17 Cool.
1:37 Awesome eyeball reflection!
1:57 Nail gun!
3:00 Hey, no fair!
3:20 Don't mess with the hair!
3:41 Sweet.
3:48 Noooooo! I wanna see what happens.

Wow. That was really good. The fighting isn't that great, but it's definitely the most entertaining film in the contest. And the funniest by far. The shop guy's finger is the best moment in the competition. I'll consider this for my top three.

I've just finished all twenty-seven entries. I was fairly impressed with several of these and fairly dissapointed in others.

I will review these by going down the list and hitting on those that I either 'really enjoyed' or 'really thought needed improvement'.

#2-

I was not impressed with the actual duel as much as I was the unique measures taken to make this entry stand out. The wire rigs added a certain 'original element' to the mix but I think the coreography itself lacked luster at times. It wasn't bad though for being in the air half the time. Nice use of the camera at times and an interesting entry, but overall, I was not blown away. This entry made 3rd in my book for originality.

#4-

Horrible coreography. This just appeared lazy. Most of the fight was the same stick bashing over and over. It reminded me of the duel at the end of The Jedi Saga. It just doesn't work.

#5-

Grrr.

#6-

Had this been about costumes you may have taken first in my book out of these entries, but you did not make the top three. Not the worst coreography, but thats what this contest is about and there were several better fights. I'd say this would have tied for 4th with a later entry.

#8-

I liked this entry. I liked the quality and I liked the coreography for the most part. It was slightly interesting. I especailly liked the leap at 00:59
This entry would tie with entry #6 for 4th if there was a 4th place.

#9-

This was decent fighting. I liked it. It wasn't over the top or underpracticed, although it was a little slow at times. I gave this the #2 spot based on coreography alone, which is what this contest is about. It wasn't the best looking fight, but I didn't really get bored when I watched it.

#10-

This entry won. It was smooth and well-paced and seemed more like an actual fight than a well-planned series of moves slabbed together. At times it was a bit off and I didn't like the decapitation(not convincing enough for me), but I liked the look and ease of the overall fight and unlike entry #9, this reminded me of a lightsaber duel rather than a sword fight. Props in my book to the best team out there. I would like to see this rotoscoped.

#20-

Decent coreography but not the very best. Ranked better than others but not quite near the top positions.

#27-

I thought this one was pretty funny at times. Not the best fighting or overall entry but it was a fun watch. Just wanted to include it.

By special request, a full review of #11. (And sorry for messin' with you guys; I just couldn't resist.)

#11
0:12 Bagpipes?! Nooooooo!
0:18 Good energy though.
0:26 That was really weak.
0:32 Decent spin.
0:37 Way too slow.
0:40 Fake looking slo-mo.
0:44 Great sound FX.
0:57 Um, get up and run? Or something?

This one was good. There were a couple of shaky spots, but it held my attention. The fighters looked really into it, especially the guy with the hat. More speed is the main need. But please, lose the bagpipes next time.

Yeah, thanks for the in-depth reviews, I learned quite a bit about my own entry. I hope to have some reviews for all of them (including my own, just to confuse you tongue ) up in the next day or two. For the moment, some quick impressions of the ones I really liked:

#2: I really like the opening. I'm not sure why, I just do. Good choreography, a little weird in places, such as the guy sliding along the floor at 0:46.

#6: I know this comp is supposed to be about the fighting, but I liked this one a LOT. Still didn't vote for it, because it wasn't great in terms of pure fighting. But the storyline was quite interesting.

#8: Very nice overall, good pacing and such. Not quite sure why the lights randomly came back on at the end, but whatever. It was still good fighting. Voted for it for second.

#10: Wow. Just wow. I thought the facial expressions in this fight really sold it well, specifically at 0:34. Some may argue that it "isolated the error" or some such, but personally I didn't like the slow-mo at the end. Took first, voting-wise.

#27: I loved this one. Very innovative, great use of the environment. Good use of incidental background characters, something not often seen in fights like these. I like the hostage taken at 2:58. Also, I couldn't help but think of Spaceballs at 3:10. "My hair! He sliced my hair!" Great stuff, but not as good as #10 or #8. Got third.

Anyway, more soon! Great stuff guys!

Reviews of entries 1-10. The rest will be up when I finish them. tongue

Entry 1: The fighting had some intensity to it. I think sounds would have sold the kicks and punches better. Nothing extremely cool from a choreography standpoint, but the moves there were well done.

The editing was fairly good, and I liked how the fight was done by water.

Entry 2: Two words: holy crap! I LOVE the wire work, and the location is fantastic. The fighting was very well done too. I like the parts where you’d do 2 or 3 hits, then break. Very realistic; it reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean. The mid-air fighting was awesome too. The camera angles were very cool, and the footage was high quality. Both of you guys looked very intense during the fight.

Entry 3: The fighting was good, but posture and footwork needed some help. Particularly the guy in the blue shirt was slouched over. I liked how you guys used blasters too, extra weaponry is cool. Pretty good choreography; keep it up.

Entry 4: Lots of repetitive stick bashing, but there were some cool moves thrown in there. Cliché location too, but an overall good job.

Entry 5: Choreography was good, and I liked how you guys were trying to show some aggression. I liked how you showed the blades close to each others necks at the end, it added some intensity. You guys had a cool ending too.

Entry 6: I know this doesn’t affect the vote, but the picture quality was BEAUTIFUL. The fighting was very stylized; all of the entrants knew how to handle a blade very well. I liked the eye gouge at the beginning (I think that’s what it was). I also liked how the fighting, though fast, seemed realistic. You’re costumes were brilliant, and I liked how all three of you had different fighting styles. Very good job.

Entry 7: For starters, I really liked the location you choose. The fighting at the beginning of the entry is very nicely executed, and the pacing is good. I really like when it is in front of the Christmas tree. The stuff in the dark is very stylish, but hard to see at some points, and therefore hard to judge from a choreography standpoint. The fighting I could see in the dark was also nicely done, with almost every attack aimed at the opposite persons body (as opposed to their weapon tongue ). The was a little bit of “stick-bashing” at the end, but otherwise, VERY good.

Entry 8: Best. Force-jump. Ever. grin GREAT cinematography, and the fighting was fantastic. The moves were quickly executed, and there was a lot of movement, which is good. I LOVE the cut to the dark, it was very cool. The fighting near the end wasn’t as good, but was still enjoyable. I also really like the open area you fought in. You’re music choice was great (I love the stair fight in Reloaded). Excellent job, guys.

Entry 9: There is some good fighting in here. The sabers look small and well used tongue . Your movements with the blades are very quick, but there is some “stick-bashing” at points. I didn’t really see an intent to kill the other person. When the guy with the blue jacket had two sabers, there were many chances to kill the opponent, but none were executed. Most of the two sabers vs. one was stick bashing. Overall that was very nice, and watch-able. If I would work on one thing, it would be footwork.

Entry 10: My favorite. As some have mentioned (I think), this fight is better than most of the fights in the Star Wars movies (in my opinion, but we haven’t seen episode III yet wink ). I can tell a lot of focus went into fighting style, and both opponents showed great attitude. I could see that almost every move was aimed directly at the other opponent. The punches and kicks were beautifully done. Editing was seamless, and I honestly like it un-roto’d. This may sound cheesy, but this fight really inspired me to start making my fights a hell of a lot better. You guys, in my opinion, truly deserve the victory. Oh, by the way, I loved the saber flip and the way the actor brushed it off like it was a piece of cake. happy

Due to the nature of Film Choreography, there are actually 3 elements that combine to make good fights. Each one is equally important; Choreography, Cinementography, and Editing. In my Judging, I will rate on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest, each one of these elements.

Choreography: How well did the talent perform the moves?
Cinementography: Could we see what they were doing?
Editing: Did it flow?

Comments:
Choreography is like dialog. Anyone can memorize lines, it's the emotion behind the moves that drives the scene. There were a few moments, (i.e., 00:43) where the the talent breaks character, and loses the intensity of the moment, creating a disconnect of interest. The cinemantography was good, the angles were interesting, and there were only but a few shots that I found to be too long. The editing was average. There were a number of shots that could have been trimmed up to better help the flow. Hesitations created by new angles should have been cut out.

That was a facinating entry. "Wire fu" Lightsaber combat; I'm going to add how well or how poorly you did with the wire-work into the Choreography. There were moments of jumping and awesome stunt work on those wires, but there were also unnecessary, and visually bland stunts as well. The fighting was fast paced and only slightly did it vary. I think the wirework could have been perfected. The Cinemantography was well done. Great close ups, great crane shots, excellent work capturing the action. The Editing was great, it flowed well, no gaps no holes.

A fun little video, but it doesn't stand out above any other fanfilms already out there. Since this was a Lightsaber Choreography competition, I'm going to ignore the blaster sequence and the Force Lightning. The moves were not very well rehearsed. The talent was making the block before the strike came. The static, tripod cameras took shots that were too long, and uninteresting. In fact, there were only 2 shots where actual saber combat occured. The editing left a lot to be desired, and could have flowed a lot better.

As far as choreography goes, that was a lot of nothing. Two moves with a third thrown in there once or twice. With a weapon that elegant, the fight should have been more to look at. The camera work was good. I liked a number of the shots you used, including the "Hand Cam" shot. The editing was average. Good flow, bad choice of "fade to white" That's usually for flashbacks or scene changes. Nothing significant changed.

LOL! Unfortunately humor isn't going to save this piece. The choreography, although it moved, it lacked a few things. First off, realism. Some of those moves didn't even put your opponent in danger. There was also some blocking too soon, and blatent planned choreography, which does not look good at all. The camera work was ok, good angles, but nothing that seriously stands out. The editing flowed really well, but could have been tighter, again nothing special. To conclude: "Grrr"

That was incredible. A story and a duel. The Master/Apprentice training there really came through in the choreography. No lulls that I'm aware of. The master really knew how to handle a sword. The camera work didn't detract from the fight, but did keep it interesting, I was inthralled.

A pity it ended just as it was getting good. The choreography was interesting, It flowed really well, and the talent moved their feet. Cinemantography was ok, but difficult to see what's going on. Black jackets at midnight? A Gaffer's nightmare. There was an apparent lack in the film without the rotoscoping. Certain effects were clearly lost, like the sudden deactivation and reactivation of lightsabers. The editing did flow extremely well; no outstanding gaps or lagging choreography.

Great Job! The choreography flowed. There were moments, however, of hesitiation or just decreased intensity, so I couldn't give it a 5. The cinemantography was excellent. I loved the Light and Dark elements in the film. The camera work wasn't to distracting and kept the heroes in the action, it followed along wonderfully. The Editing could have been improved in two places, with some insert shots of how the lights went off and back on, like hitting a control box, then seeing a backup light turn on, or something. All in all. Great job

Incredible choreography. You guys really did know your stuff. Unfortunately, dispite your skill in swordplay, you should have hired a better cinemantographer. Although the long shots of continuous action was great, there should have been a little more variety in the kinds of shots that you did. As far as the editing goes, there were moments that should have been trimmed up to help with the flow. A few frames here and there make all the difference.

Well, well, well. Amazing choreography. Absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the story of the fight sort of dragged on. There were some shots where the camera was "hot" and the white wasn't that pleasent to see. Also the point of struggling with the sabers lasted a little too long with the same kinds of shots. I can't wait to see this rotoscoped.

This one is pretty average as far as fanfilms go. The Choreography was ok, the actors moved, but it wasn't very interesting. The Cinemantography was pretty good, moving around a bit, however, the camera kept moving in random locations that you wouldn't expect. The editing did manage to tell the story, but didn't really stand out with anything.

This film could have been a lot better. The choreography average, nothing to spectacular. Could have been faster, could have been smoother, could have been a LOT better rehearsed. The camerawork was aweful, there were shots that could have had much better angles. And the editing? Spending some time fine tuning that puppy could have really helped the flow of action.

Choreography left something do be desired. It was a nice attempt at what it was, but there was no style, no finess, and in those close quarters, it was more of a special effects test than a lightsaber duel. But for what it was, the cinemantography and the editing were about average.

Nice setting, nice idea, nice story. But this is a choreography competition. Dispite the storyline, the choreography was slow, and choppy. The picture on the camera kept getting lighter and darker, and the shots were long and tedius. The editing did nothing to improve the conditions.

Story, and a reason for the fight. It's a nice start, but the actual combat was rather dull. The fighting was simply too slow. The camera work and the editing was pretty standard.

The acting was rather lame, but that's dialog, the choreography was amazing, I would have given you a five, but you HELD YOUR LIGHTSABER and HIT HIM IN THE HEAD! What was up with that? The camera angles, and the color correcting to give that look and feel was great! The editing was pretty good, but some of the special effects like slow motion, etc. were a little distracting and some of the shots could have been tightened up a little bit.

That was great. I loved how it flowed. 3 man melee free-for-all, I love it. However, as exciting as the moves were, they could have been better. The camera work was good, keeping up with the action. The snow was a little distracting of a setting, but at this time of year for a competition, that isn't all that bad. The editing flowed really well, but there were still a few places it could have been tighter.

An interesting idea, without a lot to back it up. The choreography was slow, had pre-blocking, and not very well practiced. The camera could have found a lot of better angles, and the editing needed to be a LOT tighter.

I'm seeing a lot of the things I've seen before; Unpracticed choreography, "hot" camera shots, and editing that could be alot cleaner. However, one thing that shall be burnned into my mind forever is the Afro' Jedi.

Nice job with the black and white fighters, and the black and white footage to match. The shots were long, but the action flowed the whole time, and that's what counts. The action was unstoppable. Very intense, even without story. Nice "Rule of Thirds" and camera work. There were only a few insert shots that could have been better.

Wow.... that was.... erm.... uh... something. There was some variety to some of those moves, but honestly, that was a lot of blade against blade action without much to it. It was a fun little home video, but not much else.

A fun little short, 3 on 1. The choreography could have been better practiced and sped up considerably. Otherwise, make the dramatic hesitations more dramatic, which is a cinemantography issue. The editing could have been a lot tighter.

That was great stuff guys. Really good choreography. Could be better, includeing the catwalk fight. The low angle shots were great cinemantography, all the shots were beautifully done. The editing was fast paced and quite good. I did like the split screen effect at the end, however some of the flow of editing could have been better, just a little tightining here and there, including when they jump over the railing. Overall very good.

A very well put together little piece. The choreography looked like it was well planned, but not necessarily well executed, a little more practice and up the speed, and it would be fantastic. The shots were well composed, in the action style of photography. And the editing, there were good moments, like the speed dolly back. Why waste unnecessary time? Good job with that. However, there were some shots that could have used a little more trimming for timing, but not many.

I don't know why you chose such a small, confined space for your choreography. It was incredibly limiting to what you could have done. Your camera angles were really good for the small space, but the full green or red screen for point of view shots was distracting and unnecessary. We knew who was who without that. Surprisingly, your editing was amazing. Great flow of movement.

The fighting could have been a lot better, better planning, more practice, "faster, more intense." The camera work helped move the fight along, never in one place for too long, except the last shot. It was a little unsatisfying that I didn't see other guy "fall." The editing was also really good, keeping tight and to the flow of the action. Nice job.

That was a good, really. Woman scorned gag was funny. The high and low angle shots added to the viewability, seeing what's really going on from different angles keeps it interesting. However, there were times when fighters suddenly switched sides on camera, and that's confusing keeping track.
