RE: Crimson Contention IV: Spirit of Darkness - New Fanfilm
I really don't think that it's subjective in this case.
It's possible to make a scene that goes on for a really long time without much happening and
not
lose your audience. As you say, building tension and such. Hell, I even mentioned it myself in a previous post. True, there might be
some
people who "don't get it", but that'll happen with
anything
.
But I don't think this is the case here. Because, quite frankly,
nobody
got it. The chances of misinterpretation being the culprit are dropping fast in favor of
bad filmmaking
being the villain.
If your audience gets bored or, worse,
turns it off in the middle
--as happened with more than one of us, I'll note--then you failed to build tension. I don't think you can blame the audience or subjective interpretation on this one.
And the tragic part is that it would be very simple to correct this and still keep the glacial pacing if the filmmakers are still married to the idea of taking their time.
But it would put a lot of the burden on the actors' abilities...and the cinematographer's. More closeups, more character reaction and expression. You don't build tension with long and slow shots, you build tension by forcing your audience to empathize, by showing us how the characters are feeling and getting us to feel it along with them.
And, as the director said, they were low-budget and non-actors; they basically cast their buddies. So the true mistake here lay in trying to do something they didn't have the resources to accomplish, and should have allowed for that. If they'd played to their strengths rather than their weaknesses, they might have truly had something worth watching; they should have walked before they ran.
No use crying over spilled blue milk, though; learn and move on. Or maybe re-edit, re-release,
then
move on. Either way.

As I said in another thread that was about someone wanting to make a fanfilm with thousands of effects and locations and sets, it´s better to focus on the plain cinmatographic and film-like aspect of your first movie, rather than underestimating it and making the less important things above that.

Dude...Easter was more than a week ago; the time for raising the dead has passed. Thread necromancy is cause for torches and pitchforks, not celebration.
