(If you have the bandwidth to spare, I'd appreciate someone helping ease the burden on DVeditor's shoulders. My cruddy free server is already down from advanced showings.)
Darth Moby was done as a project for the class Nature and Culture. It is our submission for the interpretative project on the novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. When the project was mentioned at the start of the semester, I immediately got together with four friends and we decided that we wanted to do a film. It was quickly decided that it would be taking place in the Star Wars universe. Professor Aronoff okayed the project, and we were underway. Pre-production, mainly reading the book (or not doing so...) and hammering out metaphors to bring over and create, lasted for a good nine, ten weeks. We kicked in to high gear coming off from our spring vacation and filmed in one week. Post-production took an additional two and a half to three weeks. Though it is being shown in class, along with other presentations, Friday, April 22nd, at noon, its web release is for midnight on the 22nd. (Tonight
)
Because of my fellow classmates not having screen experience before, and a budget that was more or less non-existant, the production value is a bit low. I feel that it is a solid script, with solid metaphors, and that most of post-production went well, but due to uncontrollable circumstances, some shots obviously have problems, namely some things that ruin suspension of disbelief. So go easy on us, at least in that regard
Any and all feedback is welcome.

I can set up another mirror on this once I get home later today.
Until then, I suppose I have nothing of value to add to the thread.
(Ephisus, there is a typo on your mirror record.)

As expected, the "premiere" went well. I loved seeing the reactions on people's faces to our own Pequod...
Of course, I'd like to hear some of your reactions too...

I'm forwarding you an e-mail I just got from a guy in Italy - apparently he wants to contact you about something a Star Wars group is putting together over there...I'm not sure about the details so this is just a free plug.

Yeah, something about the Grand Prix Star Wars Fanfilm... which I find no references to online. Nor can I find anything on either of the names that were mentioned, even though supposedly they were involved in Episodes I and II in some capacity. Waiting for a reply from them... seems odd (especially since, compared to a lot of other stuff out there, the film is... less than stellar), but I'm talking to him.

Yeah, I should've known that releasing a film this close to Revelations would be disaster.

RE: Darth Moby: Hunt for the White Sith RELEASE THREAD
Whoohoo! I finally got a complete download of this
This is really quite good. For me it works as a SW parody of Moby Dick - and really comes across as an admirable effort by a whole bunch of students putting their interests into what would otherwise be a dreaded project... I wish I could use my video toys for projects in Engineering Physics Grad School - but either I'm not creative enough, or the opportunities just aren't there
The Good:
There is some nice cinematography, some nice editing, some nice special effects (sabers look great), some hilarious special effects (love that ship. Love it.
THAT
's probably what we should have done for PwNN), and the acting is really quite good - considering this is by no means a drama project.
To be improved:
- Oi the compression! If you're going to export to Sorenson, consider making friends with someone who's got Squeeze.
- The credits are too long for a web-based film. The only time I fast forwarded was at the end of the bloopers.
- Some of the shot planning/edits seemed a little odd. Storyboarding/planning would probably help quite a bit.
Good job Boter!

RE: Darth Moby: Hunt for the White Sith RELEASE THREAD
First off, it wasn't supposed to be considered a parody. I don't know how many people here have read Moby-Dick, but we crammed a whole lot of metaphors into this from the book. But some of the best ones are the ones that happened by accident
I only read about a third of the book and skimmed SparkNotes on the rest, so during post-production, Professor Aronoff is talking about things in class and I'm sitting over here all, "Hey, we did that..."
Yeah, that post-blooper credits should have all been lasting as long as the music ones- which is to say, half the length. It was a style I liked, and it would for a longer film, but not as much for this one, I suppose.
As for the ship, I think that there's a moment where you can see the Aurabesh "Pequod" painted on the side through the compression... which was never my strong suit. I'm working on it...
