I need a camera, as the FX1 a neighbor owned will not be able to be used. I found an FX1 for 1600, but this could easily be a scam. I want my film to look nice, but I would also like to sart filming in September, so can anyone tell me where I can get a good camera for UNDER $2000?

What requirements do you have, besides price?

Number of CCD's
Variable Frame rate
Audio
format (i'd assume miniDV, but you know what they say about assuming)

I'd say your best options are:

Panasonic GS 400 - $1495

Canon Optura Xi - $850

Canon GL2 - $1699 after rebate

Panasonic DVX100a - $2800

Sony DCR-VX2100 - $1999

Those are roudabout prices, but that should help you out.

I'd go for the GL2. I love the manual controls on those suckers, better than on my sony trv 950.

GL2 looks like the way to go, where did you find it with that rebate? Anyone use it? What did you think?

I use (2) Canon GL-2 camcorders that my dad and I got for shooting weddings last summer. They are good cameras overall - and they do have some nice manual controls for a camera in that pricerange. We got ours with a rebate from Canon (plus another slash thanks to local pickup) and I have enjoyed using them because they perform well in most situations. I've heard pretty good things about the Sony DCR-VX2100 but I haven't had a chance to look deep into the features and such in comparison to the GL-2.

Hope that helps!

I am also in love with my GL-2. Cost me about $2500 with some extras (a case, a six-hour battery, three filters, etc.). If you can swing it, I strongly recommend it. i will say that my one problem with it has beenn under theatrical lighting conditions -- it tends to freak out with the autofocus and exposure settings. Of course, those were also times when I could not be with it and had to leave it on its own or with another operator. It'll do just fine as long as you're there to operate. Other than that, never had a bad experience (well there was the one time the tripod fell over and broke the bottom, but that's not quite the same thing...), and that's not the kind of problem you'll run into; you wouldn't have such extreme lighting conditions in a fan film.

Yeah, plus most of my fan film will probably be greenscreen. If I can find a place to buy it with a rebate that puts it down to $1600, I should be able to buy it in Sep., just in timne for shooting. If anyone can find that price, please, please let me know.

The VX2100 sure does look sexy.

Looks more like a "riced" out handycam to me wink
It is a good camera, but looks like it's trying to hard tongue

Looks like it could take a beating though if needed.
Always a good thing.

Be very wary buying expensive cameras off eBay. They are very often scams. PM me with the auction if you're worried, and I'll look into it.

I had a VX2100 from January up until last week. Between that and the GL2, I'd probably take the GL2--it has better audio controls and is a little better balanced as I recall. I remember when I wanted the GL2, I was finding it for around $1200-1500 or so.

But I don't want either camera anymore wink
