For you guys with dial-up or still downloading the tutorial. Here is the difference.
Old Method:
New Method:
If you can't see the difference, I shall explain. On the new method, the blur actually keeps going instead of stopping when it gets to the end of the frame. The blurs are also different. Not really easy to understand. I couldn't find a better way to explain.

Very nice tutorial there, Ryan. An improvement on the last one because your previous video tutorials taught only how to rotoscope images as opposed to the more frequently used footage. I look forward to experimenting with this method and hopefully coming up with some useful tweaks to it.
By the way, I noticed you're using a Windows machine now.

Sounds like a good way to do it, Zap. I'll give it a try sometime. That's why I always say to experiment and tweak, etc. Tutorials shouldn't be folloed explicitly. It's always good to find cool ways to do things (like that) and use the aspects that you like from different methods. For instance you could definitely roto that way and use it as the roto layer fo rhtis method if you wanted to.
Those comparion pictures are cool, but really, with tweaking, you could get whatever look you like with either method. They're mostly the same. It's chiefly a matter of how to organize your composition to achieve the effect. For my work on Three In The Afternoon, for instance, most shots were using like 6 glow layers with dropping opacities, as opposed to just 3 or 4 glow layers. The method is just a framework for you using your glow layers in your own preferred ways.
The sabers in the ROTS game are technically part of the character models, and not an effect. Thusly, I didn't work on them.

The Main Character?
or were you the guy in that, "Ryan vs. Dorkman" movie?
I can never tell you two apart.

Coolness, I love the new work flow, that additive layers trick never would've occured to me (without intensive thought) so thanks on that.
BTW, Pardon my ignorance, but what is Three in the Afternoon?

Wow, great method. I think that it gives you a lot more control over the appearance of the lightsaber than your previous method...
For example, by adjusting levels on the topmost adjustment layer, you can easily choke or expand the feather with a single slider. There are probably loads of different ways of tweaking the sabre to create cool effects and/or better results.
Again, great method Ryan.
