Great tut Ryan.

That will speed up my work no end as I'm finding I am having to revisit some of my old shots again and instead of copying the key frames again for the roto layers its gonna be easy dealing with just one roto layer.

Great !!

And the potential is extended greatly into laser beams as well. Same technique. Great !!!

I tried all the possible ways to make LS effect and I still think, that Michael Frisks method is the best...

No offense, Ryan, you're cool. Where's your "not once, not twice, but (Yeah, you guessed it) thirce"?

Are you working on other different effects Ryan? Vibro-staff, force tricks or blaster effects etc.? Have you got new projects? I wondering because you're very popular in Turkey too, can we make a interview someday for Turkish Fan Site www.starwars.gen.tr ?

Ryan, very nice. I think I'll be sticking with the old way, because I've been doing it for two and a half years... I've expanded enough on it that with shortcuts, it's almost as short as this method. But nevertheless, very nice work with the adjustment layers and such.

And Joph, I said it before and I'll say it again, melikes :P

I'll be sticking with the old method too. It seems easier and faster for me.

Told ya ....old dogs!! lol I'm gonna have to agree with them though...old way for me!Atleast for now !!!

if you like to roto that way, of course, you can use the Frisk method of painting for roto with this method, or the older one. You only need to have a white roto on black underneath all the adjustment layers, etc.

I'm starting to wonder what some of you mean exactly, when you say the 'old' way is 'quicker' and 'easier'. (no 'more seductive' jokes.)

Easier, I can understand, in that the 'old' way things are organized fairly simply into comps for roto, glow, and final composite. (or just roto/glow and final composite) And so I can see how it would be easier to understand and maybe keep track of. But at the same time, in the "new" way, everything is together in one comp working at once. It may be a little intimidating at first, but it's a bit more convenient, and required no comp switching when tweaking roto.

I'm not sure that either way is necessarily faster. You're essentially doing the same stuff in both methods, just organizing it differently. Like I said, depending on how you like to rotoscope, the 'new' method may be quicker for tweaking, etc.

I'm interested to hear more from the traditionalists.

Ryan I think your new saber method is cool but it really slows down the render.

It's not really faster. It's what I'm used to. I have a solid with a mask, additional masks if something blocks the middle of the blade; then when I'm done rotoscoping, I duplicate the masks (not the layers, duplicating the masks seems a bit tidier to me). I know that this new way probably is easier, especially once everything is all set up, but I've adapted your old way enough that while it's not inherently faster, it is still something that I am very comfortable with and am very pleased with the results from.

Well, he thing I like about this is that I can do things in one comp. Some of my saber experimentations have gotten drawn out into rediculous chains of nested comps. Ugh.

Ryan I think your new saber method is cool but it really slows down the render.

Realistically, if you use the same ammount of glow layers, blur, bits per channel settings, etc. as the 'old' method, this one should be just as fast, or if anything, faster. The way I figure.

The thing I really hate on your method is moving with the points when rotoscoping. It's really slow. I like when I can just paint the white line hugs

That's fine, I'm not telling you which way to roto, just using masks as the example. Your misunderstanding is that the method here isn't about the rotoscoping, it's about how to generate the glows and composite it all onto your shot. Like I said several times, now, you can use any method of rotoing you like (including painting) and it will work fine.

I like when I can just paint the white line

But most of the time it's not a line, it's a big ol' triangle.
