Ah I've actually managed to work out the differences. Some of the things were just named differently. "Mask Path" vs "Mask Shape" for instance.

I was actually following Ryan W's tutorial, if that helps.

The costume for the officer in Romeo and Juliet made many of us think Dark Jedi. Last night I got a pic taken with a prop lightsaber. I may take one tonight with my Friar robe.

I also tried something different on the red color cause I've never been happy with just using the Midtone and Highlight Red

Color balance is found by either typing it in the effects and presets window(right of the screen), or going to effects->adjust->color balance

Actually, in the version that I have, it's under, "Effects->Color Correction->Color Balance". There's no "Adjust" folder thing.

But then, I don't have CS4, I have 7.0, so I don't know if that makes a difference, but whatever.

Can anybody give me some tips that would help with my sabers blowing out on a white/bright backround?

Light sabers vanish in front of white : (

The best I can figure is to create a white solid, mask the layer, give it an appropriate feather, duplicate it, change the duplicates color to your desired saber glow color, expand the mask a lil, and place it underneath the white solid core. Lower the duplicated solids opacity. Tweak it of course until your happy, but thats the only way i figured out how to create a saber in front of a white back round.

They're supposed to disappear in front of a white background--you can't make white any brighter. If your saber shows up as a color over a pure white background, then it looks fake--that's not what light does.

yeah, like when Luke is on Hoth.... Light doesnt bend either.... rolling_eyes I notice in one of my fan films that there is an overexposure in the back round in a few shots. All of the sudden the guys light saber blade is gone, it just doesn't look right! It is distracting, like a continuity break, or like, oops who forgot to finish those shots. When the blade disappears, it breaks the suspension of disbelief. Even in the star wars movies, there are several shots in which light sabers should disappear but don't for the very same reason. Like on Hoth, and in Jedi, at the Sail Barge Assault!

I hope that helps....

EDIT: Why the hell nobody on these thread's gets this is up and beyond me, but if you have a light with a color tint to it... would that colored tint not appear in front of solid white? Is'nt it a colord light in FRONT of white?
Regardless, as long as it keeps you in the film, it works!!!

Getting a lightsaber to show up in front of the sky is relatively easy, but it depends on your camera's exposure settings. If the exposure makes the sky white, it won't show up, but if you set the exposure lower, the sky will have more detail, and thus, the saber will show up.

The idea of a saber is that(and this is arguable) it's a bright white light, and the color is kind of an optical effect. However, since it's a bright(or super) white, it won't show up infront of white, no matter how you look at it. Technically speaking. Of course, the promo pictures for ep3 have bright backgrounds and sabers showing up, but it looks very wrong. One of the reasons Luke's saber was green in ROTJ, was because the original blue saber(green wasn't a canon color until they altered it) didn't show up enough in front of the blue sky on Tattooine.

After some trial and error, did this in 3DS Max...

Thoughts?

This is the one that I got right before, but I wasn't to happy with it, for fairly obvious reasons...

[EDIT]
Testing out another color.

Thank you. First think I ever modeled in Max. lol

And as for the yellow, thanks again. I was kinda shooting for more towards gold than yellow or orange. I'm happy with the result.

[EDIT]
Tried to get a Lukeish color. And just for the people in here, the blade doesn't have a shadow... grin

I'm still about confused about the little block around the glow of the blade.

Not bad at all. The first yellow is pretty good. It's hard to get a good appreciation of them against such a neutral background, but I like what I see so far. The point is well done, and is something I like, though others may lament about its presence in the Star Wars world.

Thanks. Did one with a new version of the hilt.

You can see the edge of the floor plane in this one. lol

What would be a better background to use?

[EDIT]
Added a belt clip onto this one. lol
