Polearm saber... Did this one out of boredom, trying to come up with a fairly decent design before I actually get around to making a prop.

Three foot long hilt, with a two foot long blade. I've messed around with a mock-up version of one with those measurements, and it worked great. Although, I'm not to sure that I care for how the glow turned out on this one...

That's an interesting design. That sort of displacement could be kind of cool in a regular sized hilt, too.

Makes it more deliberately 2-handed.

The hand grip indentions? Yeah, one of the things that I noticed with the mock up I had been playing around with, was that a hilt of that size, isn't the easiest to maneuver when it's the normal thickness. And I figured that if I had the entire diamiter shrunk down at the areas that the grips would be, then it would weaken the strength of it.

And I'm kinda a fan of that look to. lol

[EDIT]
Here you go.

I need to do a lot of work on textureing...

Finally got a fairly decent chrome material.

The colored portions are just the "car paint" material... Nothing I did got a good wood or leather look. As it is, it kinda looks like a powder coating. lol...

Did a real quick model of the MHS saber I'm gonna be putting together for my brother for Christmas. I put a lot more detail into this one. Such as the blade holder screw, and the screw hole in the covertec belt clip.

You know, something just hit me. I'm not really sure if these photos would fall into the "Lightsaber Effects" category.

lol

I had an idea the other night... anyone ever considered trying to make a video or image of what it would look like if two lightsabers collided... as seen with a high-speed camera?

It would likely be hard as hell to do... but could look amazing.

If I had a camera that could record the blades moving at that speed, it could be fun to try. Trying to create it from scratch would be a pain.

Gimme some 30i footage, and I'll try my latest trick on it.
I've "successfully" cranked footage to 120 fps, which then stood up to 1/4 speed playback.
I'd bet it could be pushed further.

I've tried to mimic upwards of 200+ fps but whenever you get that slow it requires meticulous work. Never really looks super great either. Shoot on film!

What sort of work is needed once you get towards the higher frame rates?

My trick is mostly a series of standard AE 7 filters and effects; "pixel motion" frame-blending is the key.
I'm not sure how high it'd go and still look good, but 240 and 480 are logical steps to try.
For shooting, I'd suggest that the scene be lit to the point of over-lit ( without clipping ;-) ) and that the shutter be set as fast as possible. Since I don't have a camera of any kind, it's a non-starter for me alone.
