Brief Intro:

Hey everyone, I'm pleased to be able to show you something I've been working on for the last 5 - 7 weeks. I started this as a project for college but decided to run with it and make what you see here.

My goal with this project was to have something to show people that have worked on fan films for years, and also those that had never heard of fan films before. Several people in the video program at my college hadn't even heard of this craft yet were interested in checking this stuff out after they saw what was put together in this video. I also got to plug TFN and these forums a bit but that's another story. wink

I'd like to thank every single person and/or company for letting me use their footage, voiceover, website images, and more in this documentary. I was really pleased to get permission to show clips from Hardware Wars, Duality, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation, pieces of Ryan Wieber's demo reel, and many more awesome projects. Lots of people graciously sent me high-res footage, most of which isn't available anywhere on the internet.

Anyway, just wanted to give you a bit of history on what all went into this project. Please check it out, let me know what you think, and be sure to tell people about it if you feel it conveys the message well. happy

Quick Notes:

- Over 120 hours went into the preparation, creation, and post-production - I left college when the labs closed at 11 p.m. many times to come home and work on it

- Well over 200 e-mails (plus many PM's) were exchanged to get explicit permission for everything that is shown

- I will be creating a "Special Edition" a few weeks/months from now so I can include even better quality footage (clips that were confirmed for delivery but didn't make it in time for this release)

- The majority of this project was made at 3 a.m. or later

- Black shirt on black background = no doh! (see previous point)

- This is my first official release topic...ever

I coulda done without all the OMG SHIMMERY LIGHT effects at the beginning, but they serve an interesting purpose:

When they're all done, and you show up... in a sort of shiny black chair and an ILM t-shirt in a blank environment... with the sort of 'video production buyout music' going in the background...

... dude, you look CG.

I'm not kidding, you totally look CG. laugh

Also, Hardware Wars looks pretty neat. I never saw any footage of it before. I have to say in general this was well-put-together, felt like I was watching PBS. I'm glad you always made the effort to get high-res footage, not Web copies. In some cases it's the best I've ever seen these projects look!

With that said, to an extent it is in large part too much "here's a bunch of fan film footage while we discuss something that isn't related specifically to the content".

EDIT: Since when is Consciousness Has a Cloth Tag a fan film? Fig, did you pay this guy off?!

Rick McCallum loves you!

It was interesting. I will say you did look CG though. It took me a second to pick up on you being a real person.

The quality of the picture is there, but the sound quality could be a little better. All in all, I'll agree that it doesn't seem relevant at times, very PBS. It's really neat to see all of these films compiled into a nice demo package, and an interesting interview also.

Good work, but there's always improvements to be made.

Not only do you look CG, you look like a CG version of Elijah Wood from the omitted Frodo-as-Gollum scene in The Two Towers tongue Cool doc, and some of my work was up there, so I can't complain grin

My god.

You're like Kevin Spacey on Science Diet.

Anyway, cool stuff, man. I still don't know what CHACT is doing in there, but no complaints. Fun to see fanfilm footage collected into one place. Let us know how the general audience reacts.

Hee hee, thanks for the comments so far guys. You mean to say all this time you thought I wasn't CG? raised_brow

Seriously though, I'm just swinging by to check on things before bed (gotta be up in a few hours tired ) but since "PBS" has come up a few times I wanted to clarify something about this project. One thing that I can't convey through the video is how I went about certain parts of this process based strictly on the original assignment guidelines. We were told we had to make a documentary and it had to contain certain elements to be "complete" (eg. certain method of presentation, permission for all material, etc.)

Soooo, I decided to go for something that was a real stretch for me to attempt. To be honest, the mere fact that I was able to get written permission for all the media you see and work with people to get this many clips and such is worth all of the time spent on the entire video. That collaboration process combined with a format I'd never thought about attempting before (documentaries in general) was more of a benificial learning experience than I can express through the video itself. (Which is why some of the footage may not seem relevant at times. whistling )

That said I welcome any and all feedback because even though it is very "PBS" in spots, I was able to stick to the guidelines for the class project and pull everything together on time in a way I'd wasn't sure I could pull off when I started. Between that and getting permission to use things like Duality that even got pulled from TFN some years ago, it was very worth the effort and I look forward to using what I learned on my next project. happy

Thanks again for watching!

That was great! That would make a great intro to fanfilms video to show people who don't have any idea what fan films are or are just starting out. Kudos on getting all of those clips signed off as well. I bet that took awhile.

Very nice and very well put together. Shoot me an email and I'll see if I can get you some higher quality MS footage for your special edition. Also, am I to believe that you have in your possession a full-length version of the Raiders of the Lost Ark adaptation?

Hey, that was very good. Congratulations. (What's wrong with PBS? Hehehe.)

Maybe you should've included more statements from other people than just Ryan. I know he is "the man", but it would be more interesting to hear (and SEE) other people commenting too. Get a statement from someone at Atom Films (or even Lucasfilm, why not) would enrich the project a great deal.

But it's a very good documentary as it is too. I laughed when you said something about people who can't even hold a camera being able to make a film. grin
