Depends upon what you're trying to do and what you concider "good"

If you're looking for freeware you can prety much rule out the "good" part.

There are programs designed for composing and creating manuscripts for performance. ( Sibelius or Finalle ) Or are you looking for a sequencer / sampler type for simply producing music tracks ?

There was a good thread a few days ago talking about sample libraries.

Here it is...

You can count on any quality software packages to be on the pricy side. I suppose if you're just learning there may be some free midi-type composers out there, but I imagine they'd be prety lame.

peace

I.K. Multimedia's Miroslav Philharmonic: $599.00
Albelton Live 5: 399.00
Casio PX100 Digital Piano: $499.00

Total: $1,500.00

And it's worth every penny.

Depends on what you need. I typed up a big thing about this with links earlier, but i couldn't post it for some reason. *shrugs*

Anyway, basically, it's a complicated process, and you need to know a lot in advance. It's like 3D. you have to be a good artist in general to make too 3D models. or being a director. You have to have a good idea of what you want and be able to work well in many situations to make good films. The progam is only a tool to get that done, which is what I think a lot of people miss out on here, that it's all about story and emotion, not all the programs you use to get there, because there are countless ways to do it.

Same with music. There are countless options. here is a list of programs that are out there I know of

All in one programs: (not great, but they can get it done)
Sebelius,
Finale

Composing programs:
Sebelius,
Finale

Sequencers: (to utilze VST)
Digital Performer,
Cakewalk Sonar,
Steinberg Cubase.

Samplers:
Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL)
East West/Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra,
halion symphonic library (something like that)
Garritan personal orchetra (weak)

you're going to need one of each from those catagories to make something more decent than a MIDI file. It takes money, skill, time, an ear, and more money and time. Youre going to probably need a seperate hard drive for the samplers too, since most of them run from a hard drive, and will have trouble if they're interupted at all and doing menial computer tasks instead of just being used for samples.

Best of luck to you! happy

Sibelius is a exceptional program (just bought it last weekend. I can see why it is so popular amongst the pros) but it is not a dedicated sequencer. It's a composing tool focused on printed manuscript. It also seems to be a bit of a pain to use VST instruments along with it. They say it's possible, but I havn't figured out how to do it yet.

Music theory is prety much a requirement to write music, though some people seem to do a decent job without it.

Mirslav Symphony is a great library (except for the high trumpets.....sigh.... sad )

Bgii...I assume ableton live is a sequencing program, yes? If you could...why do you like it ? What makes it special ? I've been very disappointed with cubase and am in the market for a new sequencer. Any insight you could give would be appreciated.

I hear so many mixed reviews of GPO....maybe I just have to buy it and find out for myself...

/ASOULAN says goodbye to another $150/

And a QFE to J-W:
It takes money, skill, time, an ear, and more money and time.

Yea...it does take alot more than an expensive software combo to make good music. But oh does that expensive combo make a difference in the final result.... happy

peace

Actually I quit using LIVE a while ago, and switched to Adobe Audition. But Audition doesn't support VSTi interface. I have a basic VSTi host that I use to record off of the sampler.

Cinescore requires no composing or music theory knowledge. They have dozens of themes that you can arrange and sample from. And it's around $250.

Messing around with acid loops is not composing.

It's more like putting sounds together.

Personally I use FL Studio to mix up percussion. But I wouldn't call it composing

It may not be composing so much, but you can still get some good results from the techniques used--check out the soundtrack to The Dig, which is easy enough to nab if you google 'Lucasarts Soundtracks'. It's made almost entirely from samples.
