I cannot possibly put myself in the mindset of anyone who would read all those books.

I confess I did read Vector Prime (to see what the fuss was about) and Star by Star (because I like Troy Denning's SW books).

Vector Prime is by RA Salvatore and thus is absolutely terrible.

I have spoken.

EDIT: Oh crap, I also read Dark Journey for reasons I no longer remember. The girl on the front cover was pretty hot, I posted a thread here asking if anyone knew who the model was but alas.

RA Salvatore is one of the best fantasy authors in existence. His Forgotten Realms novels as well as some of his own original work is some of the best stuff out there. You sir are mad. Mad I say!

But then I don't like those stupid Shannara or Wheel of Time books so maybe I am mad as well.

The Dark Nest Trilogy is technically set after the New Jedi Order series. It is a continuation of events, but as it does not deal with the Yuuzhan Vong, it is a different series.

I would say that the Dark Next Trilogy would be more vital to understanding Leagacy of the Force far more then the NJO books are. If your looking for a good place to jump in, that would be the ideal place. By the way, this is coming from someone who has wasted his time reading all those post ROTJ timeline books.

My advise to anyone looking into the EU in general for the first time would be to get into the LEGACY comic series. Along with the other current SW comic titles, they are far more enjoyable then the book series, and don't hurt your brain so much.

Dorkman, I meant to ask this a couple weeks ago. I was listening to Hannity on the way to some church function when they had a guy call in whom they referred to as "Mike the Flaming Liberal". He sounded a lot like you, was very well spoken, argued in a logical manner, and said some things I've seen you post here. Coincidence? Or are you a regular caller for the Sean Hannity radio show?

EDIT: Cause to be honest, the thought of there being two of you... well, here's hoping.

Well the reason I'm going all the way back to the NJO books, is because my brother loves to listen to audio books while doing his routes, (since it's most of the day just driving around), and I have the audio books for the LOTF books. We started listening to the first one yesterday, but he doesn't have any idea what the Vong were, or who Anakin solo was, and had questions about a few other things.

I know what all the stuff is, because I'm a geek, and have the Chronology book. So, I decided to get ahold of the books that covered the Vong wars, so that he was more or less caught up, and I'd explain the other stuff to him.

Can't start him with the comic books, because he doesn't have the time to sit down and read them. The only comic books that I've found audio versions of, were the Dark Forces ones.

I actually decided to get a few others to, so that some other stuff was filled in for him. I was thinking about getting the Jedi Academy trilogy, so that he'd know who some of the other Jedi were. Problem is, I'm not sure who's in what books.

So what are some books that you guys would advise to someone who's wanting to get caught up in the EU for the first time.

I'd recommend telling him that the vong were a group of extra-galactic invaders who wiped out entire planets, killed trillons, and screwed a lot of things up; Han and Leia had three kids: Jacen Jaina and Anakin. Anakin died in the YV war. Luke got Married to a former dark jedi, and has a son. Chewy died. All that fun stuff. Then I'd start with Dark Nest. It's introduces the characters well enough, has great scenes like R2 showing Luke holo recordings of some prequel moments with Anakin, and has a decent story.

However, If he'd rather focus on less confusing Era, I'd recommend "Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader", The Episode 3 novelization, "Shatterpoint", or maybe the Darth Bane novels.

OK, so I liked How I Met Your Mother. I still do, except there aren't any new episodes for a while. And by I while, I mean now. I imdb the show. I imdb the actors. I youtube the actors. Neil Patrick Harris seems like a pretty awesome dude (and when the hell did the Internet decide that '!' was his fourth initial?). So I go back to (NPH!)'s imdb page. I notice that he got his start on Doogie Howser. In a past life people used to call me 'Doogie Howser'. Long story. Anyway, I think, 'Oh, hey, me and Harris have a connection here.' I start watching the show. The first one is about sex. I'm like, 'OK, that's cool, I guess they were trying to be edgy. I'm surprised that they got picked up, but hey, it's all good.' I finish. I put on the next episode. It's about sex. 'WTF!' I think. Not only is this about sex, but it's about a 16 year-old doing a 40 year-old. Perhaps my brain deceives me, but does that not constitute statutory rape in CA? What the hell have I gotten myself into?

EDIT:
Apparently rape is AOK, as long as the resulting child might grow up to cure cancer.

EDIT2: Also, according to the medical community, turkey basters don't count as rape.

EDIT3: But apparently, Doogie doesn't let older women rape him. He's too strong. He just tells them that he wishes to have children with his wife. Who doesn't exist. WHO WROTE THIS SHOW?

I may have to put one in the comic somewhere just for the lulz.

EDIT: Been a while; forgot how this board formats images; code changed to something less visually annoying for the reader. Heh.

Here's my question, since you've now twice did the "Fox is not news" thing: do you think this about their more button-down news programming as well? In your opinion, do other news networks do a better job of pointing out who is meant to be manning the (ostensibly!) fair and balanced news desk, and who is in the position of commentator / editorial?

I'll let Jon Stewart, the aforementioned Only Trustworthy News Personality, answer this one for me.

Definitely coincidence. I value my brain cells far too highly to listen to Hannity's drivel, even long enough to rebut it.

And speaking of the Daily Show, if last night's satire of Glenn Beck doesn't win them an Emmy, I will demand a recount.

Dorkman -- yeah, I've seen the "For Fox's Sake" video... in a weird way though the comment about the "Who The @#?! Are Those Guys" anchors feeds into I was getting at. I think that even if Fox doubled their straight-news programming and replaced all the anchors with straight-talk moderates just to wipe the slate clean, it wouldn't change the fact that Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck et all would be its superstars. The entertainers will always get more press than the press itself.

I've learned that it's a good thing for a news or newsish organization/show to have a bias if only to inspire it to actually make an effort. Especially in TV, where lazy journalism is more welcome than print. I may not agree with Beck or Olbermann or Maddow (especially Maddow, ugh) but, while it may not be news, at least it's something. Contrast with, oh, CNN.com, which is neutral and balanced and thus has little of value unless you're trying to see if a certain celebrity really just died or unless you really love those highly important iReports.
